Re: Veteran Presence to Stablize Cards
As suspected Fairbanks way out of BDWJr comfort zone:
The Marlins and reliever Pete Fairbanks are in agreement on a contract, according to Will Sammon of the Athletic. It is a one-year, $13MM contract for the Republik Sports client, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. ---mlbtr

And you know that Oli has never done that?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 11:02 amI remember hearing that Herzog went to Ozzie Smith and asked him to work with Willie McGee when McGee was acquired. That's the manager being a leader and turning a player into a leader.scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 08:05 amSo teams don't need an actual player who's a leader?ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 07:17 am If we had a manager or staff who played the game at this level they could be the leader.
So no one on the Cards staff has played In MLB?

Yet still had former players on staff like Willie McGee, Joe McEwing, Descalso, Jay, Brant Brown, Jamie Pogue, Dean Kiekheifer, Brandon Allen, Stubby, Turner Ward, Skip Schumacher, and Bryan Eversgerd.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 11:46 amHerzog played several years for multiple managers and had good baseball men on his staff. LaRussa surrounded himself with former MLB players. The 2006 world series team had Dave Duncan, Hal McRae, Dave McKay and Jose Oquendo.Strummer Jones wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 11:36 amI'm sure Whitey Herzog and Tony LaRussa's and Earl Weaver's illustrious MLB careers were critical to their success.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 07:17 am If we had a manager or staff who played the game at this level they could be the leader.
The cardinals declined significantly when Mike Maddux left.
Oli isn't Herzog or LaRussa. He'll probably tell you that. But beyond baseball men and coaches and all of that jazz...you need a supportive front office. And there is literally zero argument that Marmol has yet had any front office actually build a team with genuine success in mind beyond "let's see what happens!"

Re: Veteran Presence to Stablize Cards
CT experts please rationalize all this
-Last season….play youth….they deserve a fair shot and full season….but keep vets….youth showed nothing
-this offseason…trade all vets to receive prospect for a future winning team….but keep youth who showed nothing last season
-don’t care about winning this season…CBA work stoppage…don’t spend money….but sign a FA SP and now looking for a OF bat
-and finally my favorite from Bloom “we’re not conceding anything and plan to field a competitive team” but he’s traded or trading all the top talent
But is wasting time looking for middling FA scrubs to supplement the Youth who sucked last season.

Re: Veteran Presence to Stablize Cards
He posted starting stats last year. 4 WAR. And any of his recent years would make him our best OFer. Noot is a 4th OFer and he’s hurt. Ivan isn’t an OF. Walker shouldn’t start. Donny will be traded. Scott can’t hit.bccardsfan wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 09:53 amNo to Bader too... he is what he is and we have seen that. 4th OFer at best. Spend some resources in trade or some money and get one reliable corner OFer who hits from the right side and can actually hit.rockondlouie wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 08:42 amMo should've never let "Q" get away, I'd love to see them reunite w/him!Cardly wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 06:55 am Bloom has mentioned another pitcher, righty OF, and bullpen stabilizer.
Starter: likely a bargain type - Quintana, Corbin
Bullpen: Fairbanks would do great - bring him home
OF: Bader wants $15 mil per for 3 - he’s out. Maybe a trade of Romero, Arenado or Donovan could get an OF.
No to Pham, Castellanos, Grichuk
(My Mizzou guy Fairbanks would be great but he may be out of BDWJr's comfort zone" h e l l NO to bringing back Harry as well as your "no's")
Get Bader or someone better. But anyone better would cost a Lot more than Bader.
Re: Veteran Presence to Stablize Cards
So because they won't sign major league talent it's the manager's fault. LOLScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 07:17 am If we had a manager or staff who played the game at this level they could be the leader.
Re: Veteran Presence to Stablize Cards
He has to say "We're not conceding". He can't tell the people the truth. They want to lose and cut payroll to the bone. This was their plan all along. They want to tank but they don't want to call it tanking. Instead they label it a "rebuild". LOL All this riff raff they are getting to pitch haven't shouldered a load in the major leagues and they're counting on them to be compete. It's a farce and a lie perpetrated on the fans.Goldfan wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 15:23 pm CT experts please rationalize all this

I think Mike Matheny went to Bud Norris with the same instructions for Jordan Hicks!scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 12:25 pmYeah because managers don't often do this.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 11:02 amI remember hearing that Herzog went to Ozzie Smith and asked him to work with Willie McGee when McGee was acquired. Then you have true leaders who are players and take players under their tutledge without being commanded by their manager. Both are valuable![]()

Marmol's last place 2023 team had Goldschmidt, Arenado, Contreras, O'Neill and Wainwright. Plenty of veteran presence.CCard wrote: ↑24 Dec 2025 21:53 pmSo because they won't sign major league talent it's the manager's fault. ‘25…..Let the Yutes Play
‘26 ….Purge vets kept last season when Yutes were supposed to run wild, bring in vets to stabilize
How about this…..Bring in HIGHLY Talented YOUTH, MID and SEASONED VETS and see how that works having actual TALENT up and down the starting squad. This isn’t hard it really isn’t
Re: Veteran Presence to Stablize Cards
Whitey Herzog took the cards to the world series in 82, 85, and 87. In between he had losing seasons. What's your point? Managers don't hit, field, throw or pitch. They can only move pieces around in hopes of them working out. If a million dollar contract can't motivate a player, I doubt anything anybody says will.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑25 Dec 2025 09:26 amMarmol's last place 2023 team had Goldschmidt, Arenado, Contreras, O'Neill and Wainwright. Herzog was the last manager to take the Cardinals to the world series with Pujols on the team until Matheny.CCard wrote: ↑25 Dec 2025 14:01 pmWhitey Herzog took the cards to the world series in 82, 85, and 87. I think "motivating" players is a misnomer. They are professional athletes. You don't get that far without motivation. One reason Marmol calling out O'Neill was asinine.
