The salary cap was created for parity/balance among the teams. So in that sense it’s reached its peak, almost too much parity (OTW needs to be less points than a regulation W).TruBlueFan_1970 wrote: ↑16 Dec 2025 22:22 pmHow so? At the same time the condensed schedule is clearly the main reason for the whacked out standings. Most of the very young and rebuilding teams that have been stapled to the basement have had amazing turnarounds 2+ months into the season. The younger players will excel over the vets to go along with less injuries.

I would say that the salary cap is working as intended. As a Blues fan you can't be happy with the season but there is still a chance. The problem before the salary cap was too many teams were out of it early in the season. There literally is no team that doesn't have a chance to make the playoffs. That keeps the fan bases involved, watching games and buying tickets.stlblue06 wrote: ↑17 Dec 2025 00:52 amThe salary cap was created for parity/balance among the teams. New quote I just saw regarding possible trades/draft picks from same interview...
As to what Armstrong will be looking for on the trade market if he moves his veterans, the 61-year-old wants to add to young NHL players, whether that be in the immediate return or through a series of moves.
“We would like to add into that group of players that are the [Jake] Neighbours, [Dylan] Holloways, [Philip] Brobergs, [Logan] Maillouxs, [Joel] Hofers,” he said. “I’m not saying those are all core players, but there’s an age group that you would like to add into. [But] to move anyone that could bring you a first-round pick, that’s likely to a team that has playoff aspirations, and that’s a pick [Nos.] 18 to 31, and historically that shows you those guys click in the league two to three to four years later.
“Well, that doesn’t do that group I’m talking about a lot of good because then they’ll be aged out. But that is an asset that you can use at a later date to get a player in that age group. So, we have to be open to anything, meaning if it is the picks, then we’ll take that pick and do something with it at the draft. Our goal would be, if we acquire things, they have a name attached to them now, not a [draft pick] number.”

I agree with this. In the East you only have 6 pts separating the best and second WC teamsTony Palazzolo wrote: ↑17 Dec 2025 07:44 amI would say that the salary cap is working as intended. In the West even if you eliminate the Avs as an outlier you have 12 pts separating the Stars and the second WC teams
That would tell me the salary cap is helping. Of course if GMs don't make good decisions, coaches are bad, teams have injuries, players are not motivated nothing you can do for them.
I read Army's comments as admitting that for whatever reason the team he put together is not working even beyond the injuries, schedule, etc. That's as close as he will ever get to admitting he screwed up.
You could make the case that playoffs now dip too deep but as a Blues fan I like to think we still have a chance and that's what the WC does for us and 7 other teams in the West.

This is what I've been saying, posting. The Blues are beyond needing more 1st round picks. More challenging but possible.John Cocktoastin wrote: ↑17 Dec 2025 09:03 am New quote I just saw regarding possible trades/draft picks from same interview...

Who wants Binnington at this point? He kinda sucks there are even whispers now that Binnnington wont make Team Canada. Anything Army could get makes sense. 14 team no trade list, 10 team next year. Take whatever you can get now before he literally becomes untradable

Binnington will be on Team Canada—there’s no question about that. The only decision left is whether he starts or is used as the third goalie.Harry S Deals wrote: ↑17 Dec 2025 11:26 am Who wants Binnington at this point? As things stand right now, he’s firmly the No. 3 option for Canada. Most of the hockey media up here in the Great White North are aligned on that, and unless something dramatically changes, that’s exactly where he’ll remain.
Re: Army: I hope they go on a run. So when the phone rings, I say no
This team should be a seller run or no run. Every time we hold, or god forbid buy, hoping to get into the playoffs sets us back from actually being relevant again. This team needs more prospects/young NHL players with upside, not adding other team's rejects or older vets to stabilize things for the current season.
Anyone that isn't projecting to be someone you want on the team 3 years from now should be available and traded.

Makes sense for the Blues but not from the standpoint of team looking to load up for a playoff run. Depth is scarce commodity throughout the league and everyone wants to hold on to their young talent playing everyday roles. Will be interesting to see if there any deals made before Friday. If Binner is traded it's after the Olympics imo. I think the logical spots are Toronto or Carolina. We are going to be getting a goaler coming back --- Hildeby ( maybe Woll if Treliving can't add someone a signifanct piece) or Pykchov if you subscribe to Armey's theory about young same-age talent coming back.John Cocktoastin wrote: ↑17 Dec 2025 09:03 am New quote I just saw regarding possible trades/draft picks from same interview...

In 4 years none of the guys who he mentions will even be 30 and thus far from being aged out to benefit from a 1st round pick finally hitting the roster. Binny and Hoff both have been getting bombarded mentally this season. Goaltenders are all crazy in some sence, and everything that has been going on simply compounds how they handel their style of backstopping a team that won't help keep the puck out of our zone once in a while.
