He's still a work in progress and he should continue to get better, or so you would expect. He is also one of our smarter players in terms of hockey sense. We have about 3 players that seem to have above average hockey sense, so you need to keep the ones you have.
Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
Good point. He and Thomas are clearly a step above in the hockey IQ category. Guys with less skill that are up there as well are Sunny and Walker.Frank Underwood wrote: ↑21 Nov 2025 12:05 pm He's still a work in progress and he should continue to get better, or so you would expect. Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
To be honest, I don't even get the question. What does "build around" even mean?
Broberg will get what the market will pay him. With the cap rising and the NHL economics being what they are, yes he might be the most paid player on the Blues at a moment of time. Who cares? He's shown good progress to be a top 4 defenseman with the potential to a top 1 pairing. You don't let a player like Broberg go.
This seems yet another attempt to say something negative about the Blues from 44pronger44. I'm shocked.

Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
I like Broberg, so my answer is yes. He’s not, nor does he appear to ever potentially be a cornerstone #1 Dman, but that doesn’t mean you can’t win with a guy like him and therefore build around him as part of your defensive core.
I’m NOT saying he is the same player, so let me be clear there before I get jumped. But from a style of play, he reminds me of Jaybo.
- Good size, but not physical or mean. Allows him to use his body effectively in the corners and defend well (watch the Oilers game and how he defended McDavid well).
- Excellent skater and able to use that mobility to kill plays and get the puck out of the zone.
- Has offensive instinct and would like to see it used more. Jaybo was more offensive in his early years in Florida and then became more of a defensive stalwart.
- Both seem to have good hockey IQ and make smart plays. Good first passers.
Jaybo was never really a bona-fide #1 Dman, but the Blues built a helluva core around him, Parayko and obviously Petro with the latter being the true #1. So again, I build around him as a legit 2-3 type Dman who I still think has some untapped potential. What the Blues TRULY lack is the next elite #1 Dman as nobody in their system projects to be one. You can win with 3-4 really good top 2-3 defenders but it’s harder. So why let go of one you already have.

Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
I was being slightly funny when I said 3, but yes, I agree on Thomas, Walker and Sunny. I would also definitely put Suter on that list, maybe at the top of it. Snuggerud and Dvorsky look like they might fit the bill as well, but it's a little too early to be sure.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑21 Nov 2025 12:10 pmGood point. No
He'll get paid but he's not a franchise cornerstone.

Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
It’s a simple answer to an answered question. I stated they will extend him. But if nobody’s judgment is better than the other it suggests having the GM photo in my sig would directly contradict that point. It would be saying I believe in this guy over the other guys, and everyone. But if nobody has a crystal ball … ? Why the “badass GM authority” energy?Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑21 Nov 2025 11:59 amSimple answer….yes they should and the easiest answer I can give you is , because every other GM in the league would do the same for this player. You can’t be afraid to build around a player because you think the contract might not work out in your organizations favor. There isn’t a GM in the league that has that crystal ball…no wanna be fan GM either has it either.seattleblue wrote: ↑21 Nov 2025 11:43 am That's not what he's asking.
Everyone knows he's going to get extended and they are going to build around him. Should they? Is that good judgment? is the question and it's a very appropriate question in contact of the situation we have before us where Armstrong answred yes to that same question with his current players and look how weak and mediocre the other people he invested in are

Maybe due to the ‘simple jack’ opening the thread after countless pathetic posts in the middle of the night.
Is he a #1 d-man? Not in my eyes but you need a great #2 or #3 as well to go places in the playoffs… see the trio we had in 2019.

Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
I wish that I could say that I trust Army's evaluation of talent. If that was the case, I could rest easy. Unfortunately, Army has developed a history of loving the duds and jettisoning the good ones.
Based on the fact that Broberg is the best young defenseman that we have by far, I think that you have to start stacking bricks on top of him.
The better question would be "Is Army a GM that you build with?"

Overall, the Blues are a very low IQ team.

Re: Is Broberg a player you build around?
Brobergs been incredible in STL he is a first pair guy on almost any NHL team and would look a helluva better on a better roster. How many points would he have if ANYONE on the Blues could finish? Broberg is going to be in the $8 million ish range

Come on...he's no slug but this is just not true.
He's not even a clear top pair guy on the Blues and the Blues are not exactly overflowing with defensive talent.

Build around? No. Not seeing anyone screaming build a team around me on this roster.
