Make Your Trades This Winter
I'm not normally one who believes that we should do a "Herzog" and have massive upheaval of the roster, but if there is a time for that, this is the time. The Cardinals should make their trades this winter because by next winters' Winter Meetings there will be a lockout. There will be no trades. I expect the looming lockout to even have some impact at the trade deadline next summer. If you are going to reshape the roster, do it now. Fans are expecting, and will accept major change this winter. Go for it.

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
I've been calling for C. Bloom to DO a "1980/Whitey" complete overhaul of the roster for some time T.B.
I want to see DFA's...........players sent back to the minors where they belong.........and of course TRADES and Free Agent signings (within reason and that fit the long term goals)!
I want Bloom to reshape the roster in his image, expunging the stench left by Mo.
If it happens, then this could be one wild & fun offseason, just like 1980 when Whitey made over a morbid roster.

In 2028 season, my hope is that of all the starters playing today that Masyn Winn is the only position player remaining of the 8 starting positions.
That is my hope !
That is my hope !

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
1. Donovan for a SP. Must be a #3 or higher. May need to add someone to make it work.
2. Try to move Arenado to Philly for Bohm.
3. Sign a SP on a short term deal.
4. Sign a reliever.

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
I agree, they will probably sign a SP vet on low cost short term deal.
I do think the trade NA with cash, for a lottery prospect. I also think Gray will be traded as well. Those are mostly salary dump.
I would really like them to attempt a trade for either Kade Anderson, M's, or Thomas White from the Marlins. I have quite figure out what either of those might take, but thinking on it.
Then mid to low level trades to remove some of the redundancies.
As I have stated in another thread, the return will be prospects, most of not all will be non-40 man.
I am curious to see how it will go.

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
Donovan and Noot need to be moved. I would like to get a hitter who has a lot or promise or some talented arm. Even if they project as a bullpen arm that's fine with me.
Most likely it would take Donovan to get a close to can't miss.
Moving on from one of the catchers would ideal, uncertain what they could obtain, but someone who can help this team in a year or two would be huge.
Roll with Nado unless you can trade him.

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
My main thing would be to move the contracts. Move the vets who you know aren't long term pieces.
That's Arenado, Gray, Contreras.
If you can get rid of those 3, you've turned a major page.
I've made my case on Donovan. I'd trade him if it came to it. I'd also offer an extension. It could go either way, but I'm not putting Donovan in the same category as the above 3. Everything outside of those 3 should come from a totally opportunistic standpoint.
In the Donovan case, I'd single out the Yankees. Because I know they will salivate over the idea of a guy like Donovan sitting atop their lineup infront of Judge. And they might be bound to be desperate after another disappointing playoff exit. If there's one team that's going to overpay, it's them. I don't know, Clarke Schmidt is an interesting name but he's got just as much service time as Donovan so he would be just as close to free agency. You'd have to find me another name, with more control and a high likelihood of becoming an MLB regular SP. Preferably close to MLB ready, because I think the Liberatore saga should teach us that there is too much variance in outcomes when it comes to a low level pitching prospect.
For those so eager to trade Donovan, be careful what you wish for. You'd have to be prepared to sit back and watch Donovan put up some BIG numbers as a Yankee, because he absolutely would IMO.

I pray the only similarity to Whitey is they are/were both GM's, and that's it. It's a different game, surface, and much different ballpark dimension. People can't come to grips with that for some reason. Whitey Ball was great...when you had 385-390ft power allies and 420 dead CF...and the Turf turned regular ground outs into singles and doubles. People have to swing differently in this day and age and ballpark layouts.
Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
They also don’t remember/grasp that Whitey didn’t have NTC’s or large long term contracts to deal with. Also, he had top prospects, an All-Star catcher and a TOR starter to deal. He gave up Kennedy, Durham, Simmons, Fingers, and Vuckovich. Bloom has none of those. He also made a couple seemingly meaningless deals, Scott for Andujar and Sykes for McGee that turned out to be huge.craviduce wrote: ↑12 Oct 2025 16:04 pmrockondlouie wrote: ↑12 Oct 2025 13:26 pm I've been calling for C. What’s hard for people to understand is that any or at least most deals, will not be made with the idea of improving the 2026 club. 2027 at the earliest.

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
I would love a roster turnover this winter. Watching Bloom wheel & deal would be fantastic. But I just dont see it happening. Maybe a trade or two and one or two free agent deals is what we will get.
Hopefully, Bloom doesn't pull a Mozeliak and hibernate all winter. That would be the worst case scenario. I hope this guy has some fire and initiative.

Yeah, by most accounts he's a cautious dude.JuanAgosto wrote: ↑13 Oct 2025 00:24 am I would love a roster turnover this winter. Watching Bloom wheel & deal would be fantastic. But I just dont see it happening. Maybe a trade or two and one or two free agent deals is what we will get.

Re: Make Your Trades This Winter
From what you read about the guy he will move slow and with caution. His priorities will be:
Assuming some of the large contracts waive their NTC he will want to free up dollars. WC, Gray and NA will be number one decision priority.
He will focus on depth both in adding depth and thinning out positions where we have too many players. Catcher and infield positions he will thin out the herd.
He will focus on making moves to enable key prospects everyday roles such as JJ and moving some of the young pitchers up in the rotation or use in the bullpen.
Blockbuster deals? He will listen but slow to pull the trigger.

Whitey had to build a team based on speed & defense that played 81 games at old Busch Stadium.
Bloom will build his roster to fit his long term goals and today's modern game (power pitching + power hitting).
Won't be easy, he's got a big job ahead of him but my bet is he's up to the task.
