Our Season is Over

Post by BrummerStealsHome »

Some season ends are met with a tinge of relief, like this one. Yeah, I'll follow the ever-growing playoffs post-season tournament but without the Cardinals in it it's never the same. But hope springs eternal, as the saying goes. Bloom will be different; he has to be different. Whatever happens, it won't be another teasing of big name acquisitions only to yield an aging veteran, a bench player, and a couple of middle relievers. And there's always the stretch hope that he'll fire Oli this offseason and not the next. Yeah, that's probably going to be the damper on this offseason.

This is a rare season where I am not disappointed it ended. The team was mostly difficult to watch and I found myself watching more Memphis, Springfield and Peoria games. I will miss the minor league games as at least those gave a glimmer of hope.

On a massive positive note, we saw our last Cardinals game without ABS. So happy the next one will have ABS.

I am not proud to say that for the first time in 44 years, I lost interest over the final two months. The team was just not exciting to spend hours watching.

I think the off season set us up to not be fully invested. They did nothing. There was nothing new added and some of the bright young talent we were looking forward to seeing either was left at AAA for no reason (Weatherholt), underperformed and didn’t get called up (Matthews and Hence) got injured (several minor league pitchers fit this one), or did nothing when called up (Church and Crooks).

It’s hard to get excited when the only breakout players are Herrera and McGreevy and MO’s ego delayed McGreevy getting a chance.

Could we not give Koperniak a chance to see if he was better than Hampson or Fermin?

Exactly. Mo was too worried about rearranging his 40 man roster. There were plenty of guys who could have been cut from it.

Likewise. I’ve been a Cardinal fan since age 9 in 1963. The last time I felt this disinterested was in 1979.

Yet I’m still interested enough to frequently (buzz) about Mozo and Marmot on Cards Talk, so at least I’m still a fan and still care.

Me too. Started watching/listening in 1982. And I still care enough to come on here and gripe.

With you Juan, I totally lost interest. Highly unusual. Always wondered how Cub fans stayed interested when they were so bad years ago. Makes it worse when you don't believe that ownership or FO is even trying. The new ABS system us something to look forward to for next year, I guess.

Dan, the Cubs couldn’t draw flies to Chewing Gum Field when they were bad in the 1970’s. Toward the end of seasons, they had attendance figures of only 2000 or 3000 at some games. It took getting a better ballclub built around guys like Ryne Sandberg, Rick Sutcliffe, etc, installation of lights in 1988, and the big WGN superstation to get people to actually go to Cub games. The only reason the Cubs were viable before the 1980’s was that owner P.K. Wrigley thought of the Cubs as a civic responsibility and was so wealthy that he could afford a non-profitable franchise.

The DeWitts are not Wrigley. They’re in it for profit. But they’d better get their heads out of their anal sphincters and realize they will make less profit if they don’t spend some money on a better team.
