Why stats can lie(re:Mcgreevy)

Post by AtillaTheBlue1 »

his stat line doesn't tell the story, he was very unlucky to give up 3 of those 4 runs

and on at least 2 of them, he made his pitch and batter got lucky. they didn't hit 1 solid ball to knock in any of 3 runs, 4th run, homer, yes it was tagged.

this is a game where you know, you throw same stuff and you will have quality starts and win games.

You might want to consider xERA.

Expected ERA (xERA) is a statistic that measures how well a pitcher or hitter performed based on the quality of contact. It is derived from Expected Weighted On-Base Average (xwOBA).

The lucky shots, some came from pitches high in the zone. I’m thinking lower down and maybe those are ground balls or line outs.

Hes a pitch to contact guy, he relies heavily on luck to be successful. His ceiling is a backend of the rotation SP.

Two starts vs his hometown team, one here and one back where he grew up last night:

10 2/3 IP
11 ER
17 Hit's
2 BB's
9.29 ERA
1.59 WHiP

Other 5 starts this season:

25 1/3 IP
11 ER
26 Hit's
3 BB's
3.91 ERA
1.14 WHiP

I know this will get c r a p but I'm chalking up those two starts vs his hometown Padres to nerves given how well he's pitched in his other five starts this season.

One of those hits came off a slow roller ground ball that Gorman couldn't field. Nado throws that one out every time.

Will these pitch to contact pitchers be aided a little more than some others, by ball strike call challenge system?

Remembering how the cards wound up with Mulder (after looking at Hudson) after they stated they wanted a power pitcher for the playoffs for when the umps squeezed the plate.

Back end starter, young cost controlled may eat some innings but he's not going to be a bellwether for this rotation in the future.

I can't believe that was ruled a hit. Clear error.

I think his ceiling is a pretty solid no. 3 with his floor being one of the better 5s in baseball. Maybe leaning more towards the 5. His true value will be accumulating a lot of innings and being a savior for worn out bullpens.

On today's telecast, Sweeney just said that McGreevy was "excellent" last night.

6 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. That's a 6.00 ERA and a 1.333 WHIP for the night. Some might consider that "poor".
