Interesting that baseball won’t play during inclement weather while other sports do
Last night during 1st inning rain, cameras showed infield very wet some puddling starting. Jeter commented. Oh they need to be concerned now about player safety.
I thought at time. Well football players play in the rain. They slip fall down in the mud etc.
Then pitcher can’t grip the ball well. Peyton Manning had to throw wet balls and receivers catching them. No stoppage of Plath there.
As a kid in St. Louis. I played yout CYC soccer. Might be pouring rain and game was not called. As long as no lightning, the game was played regardless if downpour. In fact corners of our field were basebsll dismonds..quite muddy when ball went in there.
Played two snow games too.
So ask if played in the elements in some sports but let it rain in basebsll and our ump stopped the game .
Baseball is a different animal . BTW horses run on muddy tracks for Kentucky Derby. The jockeys get plenty of mud on their Unis.

Re: Interesting that baseball won’t play during inclement weather while other sports do
Anyone who's ever thrown a wet ball knows you have little control over where it's going.
No one wants a pitcher throwing 95+ MPH trying to control it since he could really hurt the hitter while P. Manning's wet ball wouldn't do any damage to anyone.
Not to mention a hitter trying to pickup the spin thru the rain drops while keeping the water out of his eye's and his hands semi-dry.
No way to play unless it's a really light rain.
Yea baseball just wasn't meant to be played in the rain.

Nootbaar and Herrera would each get hurt five times in a rainy game. Gorman would sustain multiple back injuries.
Re: Interesting that baseball won’t play during inclement weather while other sports do
Yep, and what bad luck for MLB to put in all the effort and then have the game rained out.
Tennessee has been among the corridor with too much rain all summer it seems.
That said, we had close to 18" in July here in W. Illinois. Took some trips and the yard we came home to .............. yikes. I might have been better off spraying it than mowing it.
There's a song lyric that says something like "she got over me before the grass grew back" ............... well, in Arizona that might be so bad, but here in the heat of a wet summer in the Midwest, you could mow the same spot you mowed the day before and you'd be spitting out some new growth for sure, so here that lyric would bite a little more.

Re: Interesting that baseball won’t play during inclement weather while other sports do
Severe weather negatively impacts the quality of play of any sport, but none so much as baseball. It would be absolutely unplayable in snow, a heavy rain, or even fog. For that reason, baseball alone must suspend play in bad weather. That being said, they've become pansies in this regard. They've postponed games because of friggin' forecasts.
Re: Interesting that baseball won’t play during inclement weather while other sports do
Yes, baseball is a different animal. If you cannot recognize why it is not played in pouring rain and muddy fields, while other sports can, you don't need me to explain it to you. You need to use your own brain.ramfandan wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 10:49 am Last night during 1st inning rain, cameras showed infield very wet some puddling starting. Jeter commented. If you want Aroldis Chapman throwing a slippery 105 mph at you while dealing with vision impairment from the rain that’s on you.

Golf is another game that doesn't tolerate rain well . Have played in it when light and steady .. that's why they make 2 man golf umbrellas. The problem in golf is that if raining too hard , the greens can't take the water too long and since they are undulating puddles emerge and then you can't putt the ball thru the water. Scary part for golf is that some goofballs wont leave the course when thunder/lightning in area . several golfers every year get zapped out on courses.rockondlouie wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 10:59 am Anyone who's ever thrown a wet ball knows you have little control over where it's going.

True story ! I worked as ranger at our course . Lightning thunderstorm was moving into our area . Pro asked us to 'clear the course' .. Would drive sounding the air horns . Came upon one hole and I sounded the horn driving up to guy in fairway ready to hit his 2nd shot to green.
Hey ,sir , we need you to stop play and head into the clubhouse now .. Lightning in the area .
Guy replies 'Can't I just finish this hole and go in ? I looked at him .. Sir, do this consider your next show landed on the green and you 2 putted for par. Put that on your scorecard and drive in . We want you to be able to come back and play another day.
Oh OK he said , Yeah, I will take my par and go ! Thanks !
I thought Oh boy ! It worked .
The worse ones were guys who were 'bosses' at their workplace. were not the types to have anyone else tell them what to do .

Yawn!! 162 games. Plenty of ways to make up the game or if at end of season and game doesn't affect standing not played at all.

Rain does not significantly affect the weight of the ball in other sports.
#1 The change in weight of the ball during the rain significantly impacts the risk for injury to arms.
#2 Plus being able to control an object moving at 100 mph, thrown in the direction of another player with little protective equipment on their body, is a safety issue

Beat me to it rock lol I love that scene and movie I still quote it sometimes when it’s storming “I don’t think the heavy stuff’s gonna start for quite a while”rockondlouie wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 11:41 amNiceramfandan wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 11:26 amGolf is another game that doesn't tolerate rain well . The old saying about lightning and golf .. If caught out on the course during lightning , take your 1 iron out and hold it vertically high in the air .. For even God can't hit a 1 iron !!Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 11:46 amBeat me to it rock lol I love that scene and movie I still quote it sometimes when it’s storming “I don’t think the heavy stuff’s gonna start for quite a while”rockondlouie wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 11:41 amNiceramfandan wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 11:26 amGolf is another game that doesn't tolerate rain well . I was playing very low-level rec slow-pitch. Raining cats and dogs. The aluminum bat slupt (we’ll see if anyone remembers this) and nearly hit the third-baseman. Too dangerous when very wet. Different from soccer which I played collegiately and refereed for forty years.rockondlouie wrote: ↑03 Aug 2025 10:59 am Anyone who's ever thrown a wet ball knows you have little control over where it's going.
