They traded Helsley to add to the farm system before he goes to free agency.

Of course....but what I can't understand is....if you know and say out loud this a reset year....don't plan on adding pieces to be more competitive this year....then why in the heck wasn't he dealt in the off season....why do you keep him until he becomes a 2 month rental....some teams it would be understandable but with the cards it's makes no sense

If Cards had extended a QO to Helsley would they receive a draft pick if he signed elsewhere?

The QO will be $20M+ and the Cards would have been idiots to offer it. Helsley would have accepted, and the Cardinals would again look like idiots having an $20M+ closer on a rebuilding team.

Perhaps he would get multi year offer…..you don’t know. What’s the best draft position?

So you’re against rebuilding but for offering him QO which best case scenario he turns down and you get a draft pick you don’t draft until next year then will be 3-4 years away? Which is a lot further away than the prospects they got in the trade lol that makes no sense

So you actually thought if they kept helsley they would be a good enough team to make the post season this season or next season if he accepts the QO? This team isn’t even close to being a post season threat and you are advocating hope and prayer. I hated that mentality from Mo just hope and pray the cardinals are good if they had rebuilt when they should have they would have been good again by now but mo never went in to win or went in on a rebuild just sustained mediocrity and hoping and praying for success that’s exactly what keeping helsley would have been. For someone who doesn’t like mo you are advocating for a mo type move

Removing talent for this “rebuild” is interesting…..Are they rebuilding this year? What exactly have they done? We were supposed to see if young guys could play? Most of those young guys look exactly how they looked before this season. So what’s the plan now? Another year to blossom? I see no plan here. Middling A prospects isn’t a rebuild. The minor league filler received a couple years ago isn’t a rebuild. Receiving a top young prospect or young ML player is a rebuild, but I don’t see that. The only positive is drafting JJ. So if this is a tank job for years to draft high then get on with it. But I see no rebuilding yet

If they really wanted to do an effective rebuild they would trade Romero and Donovan and get some good prospects. Keeping helsley would have been dumb it would have been it would been the worst possible move they could make because he would walk for nothing

I'm just going to say, "I told you so" to all those (apparently including the Cards FO) who didn't want to trade Fedde and Helsley during the offseason because they would be just as valuable at the trade deadline as they were during the offseason.

Man sucks I know a lot didn't like him with how volatile he could be but I always enjoyed watching him pitch. Wish we could have had some meaningful playoff games with him.

Ya know, besides the one where he choked. Or blew up due to an non healed injury. Whichever you prefer. Hope whatever they got for him will benefit the team in the future

Yeah - it's just that Baez is so far away, and maybe won't stay on the infield... that he's too far disconnected from mattering to affect any decision making or playing time for Gorman.

In some sense, Gorman has the biggest effect - can he be healthy the rest of the season? While sluggers often take a little longer to develop, Gorman is looking more and more like a strong side platoon power bat at best. I'm not sure that he'll get to serviceable against lefties since he also kind of lacks a primary position in the field. But power is still really hard to come by, and he has shown some growth this season. I would think the new front office would like another year to evaluate him... but he HAS TO STAY HEALTHY.

So you agree they receive very little in return for an all-star closer who was contracted at 8.2mil with 2.706 roughly outstanding…….

Baez was a preseason top 97 prospect, if that's your thing. Dohm looks to be another pitcher with the kind of arm that they targeted in the draft this year.

Further away from the majors than I would have liked, but that's what happens when they didn't trade him last deadline or last offseason, assuming there were offers.

For trading a 30 year old rental? I'll take it. Got some players with upside to follow at the least.
