Unbelievable!!
My vote for most idiotic thought of the year on CT!
"Trade Donovan and just play Gorman at 2nd"
Yes, lets weaken our defense and offense all in one simple move at one position. Must have some of Mo and Oli's DNA in you.

Re: Unbelievable!!
what if high boi does it - or of he gets traded you'll just blame Moe ?

What if Donovan gets you a solid #2 starter? Then it's Gorman + Pitcher >>>> DonovanDewey Kuey wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 12:36 pm My vote for most idiotic thought of the year on CT!

Gorman would not be the guy at 2B. Wetherholt would.

Or if they can trade Donovan for a top hitting prospect you do it. Gorman would only hold it down until September then JJ comes up to play second3dender wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 12:39 pmWhat if Donovan gets you a solid #2 starter? Donovan is nothing but meh at 2b. What if he brings back a RH OFer? Power bat? Starting pitcher?Dewey Kuey wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 12:36 pm My vote for most idiotic thought of the year on CT!

Re: Unbelievable!!
This team isn't close to being good enough to compete for a world series, why the hell would I worry about losing Donovan's defense, which isn't all that great, at 2nd base?

Re: Unbelievable!!
Hate to tell you but Gorman's not THAT bad at 2b and of course, Wetherholt's probably manning that position in the future.Dewey Kuey wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 12:36 pm My vote for most idiotic thought of the year on CT!

This team is likely not to be competitive until at least 2027-28, especially with what's likely to be a paradigm-shifting CBA after next season.
If some team is willing to give a haul for Donny, it'd be borderline idiotic NOT to do it. Donny's a great player but he's not a MOTO bat so Cards need core pieces before they should concern themselves with paying a lot to complementary players.

You lack long term vision, for one if you trade Donnie and get 1-2 top shelf prospects as a MOTOB or #1-2 SP you do it. You then have JJ at 2nd which is a good bet, plus the strengthened SP or MOTOB pipeline. You keep Donnie, then what? You have a solid 1-2 hitter for a terrible team that isn't going anywhere. So he is essentially wasted here.

Re: Unbelievable!!
Yes, though it looks like JJ does not get called up in Sept due to 40-man problems. He is protected this winter without being on the 40-man. Therefore they need that slot to protect young pitchers on the bubble, several of whom have undergone TJ surgery this year. Doesn't matter as the Cardinals are not going anywhere this year anyway. So if they do trade Donny, which I think is possible but unlikely, they have Gorman for the duration -- giving him a final "runway" to prove himself. Meanwhile, the Cards are also listening to trade offers for Gorman. Can't imagine teams will offer anything near his perceived value to the Cards.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 12:42 pmOr if they can trade Donovan for a top hitting prospect you do it. If you think that’s the most idiotic thought, you must be new.Dewey Kuey wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 12:36 pm My vote for most idiotic thought of the year on CT!

Re: Unbelievable!!
Despite his raw power I think it is safe to assume that most would deal Gorman before Donovan?
To me...it’s about the return obviously.
I doubt you get a high ceiling pitching prospect for Gorman. But you could for Donovan?
That’s the debate.

That won't be an issue DLDetroit Louie wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025 13:11 pm Yes, though it looks like JJ does not get called up in Sept due to 40-man problems. Bloom is going to cull away a lot of Mo's deadweight (Roycroft, Baker, Siani, Hampson) on the 40 man.

If Helsley, Maton and/or Matz are gone that's one-three open slots so JJW can easily be added for a callup even before Bloom reshapes the 40 man.
Re: Unbelievable!!
Facts:
1) Gorman - he is not a second baseman. He's a DH for whom they can't find a place, and maybe won't for a long time. He's career -12 DRS and -18 OAA = beyond bad. No range. He's only played 231 career innings at 3b and is -3 DRS and 0 OAA.
2) Donny - he is a so-so second baseman. If the bar is "ok defense," he's your man. He's 10th out of 21 second basemen with over 400 ABs (one spot above Edman) and 13th out of 21 in Outs Above Average. He's only played 3b for 326 innings, but it's his best defensive numbers (+7 DRS/+3 OAA).
3) Wetherholt - They lose a year of service (biblically stupid) if they bring up JJW if he has more than 45 days on the roster or 130 ABs.
So, they can trade Donovan and Gorman and play someone else like Fermin at second base until August 14, after which they can play JJW at 2b (Sept only 28 roster days and none in Oct).
