Cards could use one.

Maybe - but so what?
Every single contract a team signs - whether with Weatherholt, Walker, Goldschmidt, Arenado, etc. - is a risk-reward gamble. You are never going to "win" all of them. If you are getting contracts done for the right terms, the team wins over the long run with relatively cheap, long term deals for young players.

Just curious.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 07:58 amMaybe - but so what?

What is the right price now for Walker and Gorman?
Because I have to tell you, I wouldn't shed anything over the league minimum for those two guys.
They're basically a waste of a roster spot.

I've only suggested that teams should make a priority getting early long term deals done with players who they project to be:Bully4you wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 08:00 amJust curious.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 07:58 amMaybe - but so what?

1. Starting position players who are at least going to be the LH hitting side of a platoon at their position
2. Starting pitchers
3. Closers
If you don't project a player to be one of those things right now, you don't need to make extending them a priority.

We only have a couple of qualifiers then.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 08:09 amI've only suggested that teams should make a priority getting early long term deals done with players who they project to be:Bully4you wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 08:00 amJust curious.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 07:58 amMaybe - but so what?

Donovan and Winn.

Of course. JJ is the only one (pre-Doyle) that I'd consider such. The significant downside is losing the great players after 6 years. You're moving the money from years 7 to 8, 9, or 10, which could be huge, to the early years.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025 05:53 amIt all depends on the price. There is certainly a price point at which the risk-reward balance is right to give him 8 to 10 yr. deal as they bring him up.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 16:32 pm I mean, they should be thinking about what kind of long term deal they are going to be offering him relatively soon.
