Anniversary of one the worst baseball promotions of all time

Post by rezero »

I remember Sparky Anderson saying that players were still finding shards of plastic in the field 2 years later.

And here I thought it was gonna be Taylor Motter Bobblehead Night. You fooled me!
Was Harry still with the Pale Hose when this went down? Steve Stone and Harry would've been a gas that night.
Thanks for posting.

Hi ButSir! I didn't hear it live or see it live, either in person or on TV. But it really was a big deal. I've seen the incident on ESPN, on the local news in Chi-Town, on an ESPN 30 for 30 production. and even an episode of "Drunk History". I think that was my favorite.
Thanks for posting the reply, ButSir! I've got 4 season tickets for Illini Footbal, this year. But the tickets for THE Ohio State University game are already spoken for.

Good evening, Chief Illinewekriles!
I -O!
You have a very good coach who loves blasting those shitheels up north, their crybaby coach and the rest of their egg-suckers. They chose that color, amirite?
Be well and enjoy your team.

You know I will. And you enjoy your Buckeyes! Did you hear that BYU has some one and done phenom in Basketball that signed a I thin it was a $7 Million N.I.L. contract to play this year? Can that even be true? I'm for paying these young men and women, but this is way beyond reasonable.

No, I had not heard that. It is certifiably non compos mentis.
I have pretty much lost interest in college sports. The big money has killed the regional conferences with historic, neighborhood rivalries. Never thought the west coast and east coast schools would be in the Big Ten. I am 76 and it shows, I guess. I much prefer watching Illinois-Wisconsin than Washington-Oregon.

76, would have never guessed it. You've still got it together. Really. What's your family situation? You got kids, grand kids? You and the wife okay health wise?

Harry was working that game not with Steve Stone, but with Jimmy Piersall, who often boasted of his mental illness history, saying "Lots of ballplayers are crazy, but I'm the only one with the papers to prove it." Jimmy, you may recall, ran the bases backward to celebrate his 100th career homer, with the early Mets, prompting Casey Stengel to release him days later.

That Disco Demolition night at Comiskey, Piersall wore a baseball shirt with pinstripes and "OUTPATIENT" across the chest.

Oh, I don't know. 10-cent beer night in Cleveland in 1974 was pretty bad. The fans got so out of control that they were throwing firecrackers on to the field and streaking across the field. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, unruly fans rushed the field, and players had to leave the field protecting themselves with their bats. The game was forfeited to the Rangers.
