Do we have the trade chips? Well, yeah, I suppose. Baseball Trade Values says that Masyn Winn and Brendan Donovan together have about the same trade value as Paul Skenes.
What would it take?
1) The Cardinals would have to decide that they were willing to trade their two most valuable players away for 4.5 years of a pitcher they have no hope of re-signing.
2) The Pirates would have to change their stance on not being willing to trade the best pitcher they will ever draft.
3) The Pirates would then have to be willing to trade him away within their own division.
4) The Cardinals would then need to outbid any other interested teams.
That's what it would take.

But to answer your question, it would take balls. Big balls.

More than what the Nats got for Juan Soto. And that turned into an ace, a starting All-star caliber SS, an all-star caliber OF, and another good prospect who was a top 40 prospect at the time.

We don't have the chips and the Pirates are not trading Skenes.

1. New ownership.
2. MO Ran to run away from his POBOy position today.
3. MLB competent manager.
4. Blake to go to a galaxy far far far far away.
5. Kiekhefor and Elkins - gone.
6. List from Skenes who he would like in mgr, pitching coach, game strategist, etc positions.
7. New American pope, who likes MLB, to give a secret blessing or something.

Not a team in MLB that shouldn't trump us, quit with the silliness.

2 parts.
1 the Cardinals would have to part with their 2 best players, and 2 best prospects
2 the Cardinals would have to commit to making him the highest paid pitcher in MLB history.
Result of the trade? Skenes goes from the Pirates, to the "new" pirates.
