MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
On MLB Central TV show today , they had retired GM Dan O'Dowd as their guest . He was asked the title question .
O'Dowds comments :
'I think the Cardinals have been so good because they eliminated expectations. It's crazy but it's just kinda how the game works. I think they should continue to SELL up until their closer.
I think when you look at it ..you've got ..Nolan Gorman needs to play . He's not going to be the defensive player that Arenado is . I think he is going to produce if given a chance to play every single day . They just sent out Thomas Saggese ...he's a good player . Got no place to play. He should be in the mix.
When you look at Fedde , will they win a championship with those kinda pitchers ? I like McGreevy, I like Quinn Matthews ... they have young pitching coming on. .. The closer (pause ) I would hesitate on because as a young club you wanna win the games.
The Cardinals are stuck with the fact .. Is this team good enough to win a World Series ? If not, let's continue to tinker with it until they put the group together good enough to win the WS. THE END
Any points you agree with ? Disagree ?

What you think on 5/20 may not make sense around 8/1.
Re: MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
The deadline that is 2.5 months away? Perhaps we could wait to see what happens?
Re: MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
When are teams sellers 1 game out of Division title? I’d dump NA, only because he’s not productive and there are better options
Re: MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
Good question and there was a team that was leading by 3 games who were sellers trading away an elite closer at 2022 trade deadline
The Milwaukee Brewers traded All Star closer Josh Hader to the Padres . Rather than go thru the story here is the attached link .
https://www.justbaseball.com/mlb/what-d ... he%20offer. What did the Brewers learn from the Josh Hader trade?

I agree with selling Fedde, Mikolas, Matz and Arenado. I also agree with Helsley being the wild card.ramfandan wrote: ↑20 May 2025 15:23 pm On MLB Central TV show today , they had retired GM Dan O'Dowd as their guest . He was asked the title question .

Regarding Helsley being the wildcard . Yes, a few different ways to view Helsley situation .BrockFloodMaris wrote: ↑20 May 2025 16:12 pmI agree with selling Fedde, Mikolas, Matz and Arenado. 1) Would he and Cards reach an extension ? Option 1 seems so so
2) Helsley is the one free agent of the expiring contract guys you could put the QO (quailifying offer on $21+M ) as on the open market he would get more and by doing the QO , the Cardinals would get a draft compensation pick guaranteed. So you could keep him til the end of 2025 and still get something in return most likely. Yes, you could trade him (and they may ) but returns you never know.. Look what Brewers got back for Josh Hader in 2022, 4 players and not really a big return for Brewers
Now in Mikolas case, you could not risk that route. If you offer him QO , he would take that in a heartbeat , return, and you are stuck with paying hm $21M .. not going to happen. Same scenario why Goldy wasn't given QO .. he got $12.5 M from NYY on open market.
Re: MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
I have always taken issue with labeling teams as buyers or sellers.
The reason? Very few teams should be classified as one or the other.
In theory every team should in a buyers position.
Translation- they are looking to make a move(s) to improve their team.
As for sellers?
The only way I could see classifying a team as such is if:
They are old
They stink
They have a bloated payroll
Those three combined means you need to somehow TRY to get younger, better, and more in line from a salary standpoint.
As for the Cards?
Whether they are a serious contender or not they will need to address improving the team going forward.
And of course pending FA’s could be at the center
of it all.

Fundamentally I agree with O'Dowd, except on Helsley. He will want a 4-5 year huge money deal this winter. I think the Cardinals brought Bloom in to find lower cost value instead of singing thirty somethings to big deals.ramfandan wrote: ↑20 May 2025 15:23 pm On MLB Central TV show today , they had retired GM Dan O'Dowd as their guest . Re: MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
Pretty much agree with ODowd. I like this offense, but Gorman and Walker need to get 500+ at bats and we need to see more Saggesse as well. So I think selling a piece or two is still smart there.
Pitching wise, I know they’ve been good recently, but this isn’t a playoff rotation. Selling Mikolas and Fedde is still the way to go.

Re: MLBN show: Should Cardinals be buyers or sellers at trade deadline ?
Mo should be trying right now to trade Mikolas to whatever contender that is hurting for a starting pitching
His stock should be fairly high at the moment so sell high for a change
Wait and his performance could go south quickly

I agree with you about his stock being higher now. His stock being fairly high consists of someone would be willing to take him and let him pitch. There is no world where he brings back anything more than a lottery pick. I would be fairly surprised if he is willing to waive his NTC.

They're going to have to be awfully (bleep) creative with anything they buy, because outside of JJ Wetherholt and some injured starting pitching prospects, there's not a lot there that's gonna bring back much. Well, I'd count Saggese in there as well, but I'd have to get something pretty nice back to trade him. Maybe you trade from your catching depth, but your catching depth gets less deep if Herrera moves off catcher.
Again, this is what the middle of the road last few seasons gets you.
