Parayko's icing was just as bad. Chip it out and kill 15-20 seconds

Like Rivers said he has no idea who is behind him or how close they are, so I'm good with him not taking that chance. What made no sense was firing down the ice like that for an icing. At worst just get it out of the zone.Hazelwood72 wrote: ↑04 May 2025 20:47 pmI told my wife the same thing. Why he didn’t skate it out, I’ll never know. Just a horrible play.

Yeah just a baffling approach to the clear. Even if you just want to get it out, flip it up and out to kill some more time. Don’t just fire it down the ice.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑04 May 2025 22:51 pmLike Rivers said he has no idea who is behind him or how close they are, so I'm good with him not taking that chance. Flip it out, put it off the boards towards Thomas, put the puck on net, but anything other than essentially a slap shot to the other end of the ice.bluetunehead wrote: ↑04 May 2025 22:55 pmYeah just a baffling approach to the clear. Every icing just increased the odds of Winnipeg scoring.
Also, Kyle Conner can't retire soon enough. Good lord is he a Blues killer.

I just can’t believe he did that

Re: Buchy with the dumbest play I have ever seen
I’ve watched the play numerous times now and have come to the conclusion that it’s a set play gone wrong. Watch Thomas from the moment the puck is dropped. He sprints straight down the ice as soon as the puck drops. He’s not racing to cover a d-man, he’s racing to get past the d-men. Fowler hammers it along the boards, high on the glass but Connor presses his body to the glass and stops it. I bet it gets past him at least 75% of the time. This causes Thomas to slow down and then. But the puck bounces right to Buchy. He tries to complete the play and fires it down the ice. But by then it was too late. Thomas had peeled back and Ehlers had the clear advantage.
That said, Buchy should’ve recognized Option 1 was dead as soon as Connor blocked Fowler’s clearing attempt. He should’ve tried to bank it off the boards to Thomas. Or at the very least, skated with it himself. It was still really, really stupid. But that’s what fatigue does to you sometimes. Buchy is generally a pretty smart player but my guess is his brain was still stuck on trying to execute the set play…which was dead by then and it somehow didn’t recognize the two other options that were much much better at that point. C’est la vie…

I'd be curious to know if this "hit Thomas on a fly pattern" was a repeat plan, or a new plan that they hatched to end the game. I know they iced the puck quite a few times.
Re: Buchy with the dumbest play I have ever seen
They did try it on at least one of the other face offs. It makes some sense if you get control of the puck but the guy releasing needs to turn around as soon as there is an issue with not clearing the puck.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑05 May 2025 17:34 pm+1somni wrote: ↑05 May 2025 17:06 pmThanks. When they did try the "hit Thomas on a fly pattern" earlier in the game, did the plan work or fail?

It was one of the other face offs at the end when they were still up by two, but I don't remember who they sent up ice.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑05 May 2025 17:58 pmGreat to know. Re: Buchy with the dumbest play I have ever seen
That's actually a perfectly logical explanation. Thomas races down the ice to beat an icing and get the puck deep in their zone. It gets blocked so he slows up but Buch still fires it down the ice. Blah. Bad reaction to the play, but with that line of thinking I can at least get where he was starting from, rather than just a guy purely ripping it down the ice when he had time and space.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑05 May 2025 16:07 pm I’ve watched the play numerous times now and have come to the conclusion that it’s a set play gone wrong. Re: Buchy with the dumbest play I have ever seen
Even if that’s the case, it was still an incredibly stupid play….. he has to realize if he skates it out they probably have a two on one with an empty net….. it literally cost them the game

Re: Buchy with the dumbest play I have ever seen
Oh absolutely. Complete brain fart. But in some ways, that’s a flaw of set plays. What do you do if it doesn’t work? Then what? I bet 95% of the time Buch would recognize he needs to change course and not try to continue with the set play but that fatigue in Double-OT is real.
