but you really gotta go with Hull or Pronger as the best IMO assuming you mean captain for more than a year. I'm sure some are partial to Al Mac

no offense to Schenn intended
I have no idea who the best captain is/was but being better players does not mean better Captains.
semantically the thread title can be read both ways and I think both versions are fine for the question. perfectly valid. my immediate answer to that variant of "the best Blues captaining" of all time that you're talking about is Sutter. for me pretty easily Sutter. and it's still a shame he's not belovedly in the franchise fold tbh

Is that the same guy who publicly gave the cold shoulder to Faulk when he arrived on the first day?

Notice the stone cold face of that captain...

I put Schenn with Backes. Maybe slightly above. Personally I like Schenn as captain over the last couple. I like what he brings to the Blues and it sounds like he's very respected around the league.

It seems the consensus favorite is Sutter. Wish I could have seen him play. I do like that some guys like Pronger were in there, who according to him would have loved to have just careered as a Blue rather than the debacle of the sell off happening. Rivers gave the comp to Sutter for Schenn. I think that's high praise.

Maybe the post is premature, but if this team goes on a few season run of being a thorn in peoples side and if it makes even 1 run at a Cup (i call a run at a cup a conference final appearance) under his contract, I do think he has to be seriously considered. Leading the team out of the dark times which for Blues fans, the last couple years is considered dark times, and into the future would be a notch not many Captains get to experience.

Those Sutter years were something else. My first live games holding my grandfather's hand as he led me through the smoky mung filled bowels of the old Arena were just before him & Federko arrived on the scene. So Sutter was pretty much my baseline captain and he defined the role. Schenn bleeds Blue and is a throwback style, but Brian Sutter was a force of nature.

His only negative was one mind boggling bad trade in March of 91. That 90-91 team is still the standard for the most exciting Blues hockey I ever saw. That was the year they were a truly great team and had an epic rivalry with the defining franchise rival, within the Norris war context of it all. The Arena was sold out with standing room only tickets sold every game. Seven dollars for students, discounted from $12.

Brian Sutter was my favorite player growing up. Love the guy. He was very close to Barclay Plager and in my opinion he helped build the culture that we enjoy now.

When Jim Montgomery talks about that Blues' culture, he's talking about Sutter's fortitude to never back down.

I don't think there is a best captain, but Sutter has a special place in my heart. I wish we could honor him one more time.

The cup win outweighs any negative that came after the cup win IMO. A petty cold shoulder was a result of the Blues giving Petro the cold shoulder by signing Faulk.
