If you think about it, Messi makes a referee's job easier, because he makes the players decide the game and doesn't need to rely on a call to come out on top.

Understood, and I don't disagree. But I just think the optics are bad for any referee to even give the perception of impartiality towards a player or team.

He asked for it AFTER the game not Before.

And it wasn't given on the field but behind closed doors.

Messi said it was unusual, not unprecedented.
