Braves To Sign Jurickson Profar
January 23rd, 2025 at 3:56pm CST • By Darragh McDonald
The Braves and free agent outfielder Jurickson Profar are in agreement on a contract, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. The details of the pact for the Boras Corporation client aren’t yet publicly known. Atlanta has a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move in order to make this deal official.

It will be interesting to see how Profar will play for the Braves. In his career Profar has 8.2 bWAR with the Padres in 1989 PA and 0.2 bWAR with everyone else in 2302 PA.

It’s a three-year, $42MM deal, per Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Profar will make $12MM this year and then $15MM in each of the next two years.

I was expecting him to go to the Dodgers.

Who thinks that deal will age well?
I do not.

I'm with you, because I'm annually suspicious of any marginal or average player who suddenly has a star season only during his walk year.

The Dodgers still need a genuine everyday CFer; right now it looks like time there will be shared by Tommy Edman, James Outman, and Andy Pages. Watch this space.

11 MLB seasons and not one anything remotely close to last season.
You are right to be suspicious.

Not true.

2024: .839 OPS 29 2B 24 HR 85 RBI 94 runs
2018: .793 OPS 36 2B 20 HR 77 RBI 82 runs

His XBH total in 2024 was his T-2nd most of his career. He’s had 3 20+ HR seasons now. His best play has come in SD where his bWAR is 8.2 over 1900 PAs and everywhere else it’s 0.2 over 2300 PAs.

Profar doesn't have to deliver four-win seasons for the Braves to be happy with his deal.

That's cool because he never has before.

In his 10 full seasons, he's delivered a 0.0 WAR or worse 5 of those seasons.

Not really the type of guy I would lock up for 3 years...

I remember when he came up in 2012 at the age of 19 -- the top prospect at that time in baseball. Hit a homer in his first at bat.

A much ballyhooed switch hitting shortstop who could hit, he got injured and missed the entire 2014 and 2015 seasons. Became a run-of-the mill player for the next eight seasons hitting .239/.324/.388/.712. Last year, he demonstrated his long delayed talents, but alas at the age of 30.

Now strictly an outfielder, he might still be able to play second and third in a pinch. Not sure about SS. If he's truely found himself, he can be a Gene Woodling type -- a valuable cog for any playoff contending team.
