Has Anyone Here Seen "Emilia Perez"?

Post by Pink Freud »

The coastal media critics (especially the [ahem] "bi-coastal" ones, in Peter Allen's definition) are just tripping over themselves praising it, though I wonder how many mainstream moviegoers will endure it. I'll have to check the Rotten Tomatoes rating comparing critics to consumers.

A violent crime thriller punctuated with a dozen musical and dance numbers? Check. 8O
A [transgender] protagonist? Check.
Song lyrics in Spanish and French? Check.
The [transgender] character is an actual [transgender]? Why, of course!

Just give it the Best Picture Oscar already and have some lisping ET correspondent (redundant?) call it The Best Movie Ever Made. Good god.....

Like Joan Cusack hilariously screamed as she ran out of a roadhouse in "In and Out": "Is EVERYBODY gay (or trans)??? Is this 'The Twilight Zone'?". Only in the editors' offices in New York and Los Angeles.

I call it 'the nasalification of America'. We're sort of on the front end of the Hunger Games cultural milieu. Baroque & very, very fey. In ten years, they'll all look like this :

I just checked Rotten Tomatoes, and it's Critics 76& "fresh"; moviegoers 70, so that's better than I expected. I'm just curious about what the 30% said.

Even J. C. Corcoran mentioned last week about some of St. Louis's male TV reporters and show hosts: Why so effeminate?

Like, I suspect, most Americans, I'm 100% pro-gay marriage and supportive of most LBGTQ stuff....but I don't want it stuffed down my throat. Am I wrong to prefer (if I had kids, which I don't) for my sons and daughters to become straight men and women, though I'd still love and support them if they weren't?

Now, if you'll forgive me, I have to sit down and watch "Truman Capote and the Swans".  :D

Curiosity got the best of me and I actually watched 'Emilia Perez'. Movie was good, not great but, in the end, did not really resonate with me. I did think Zoe Saldana's performance was the standout - though it was odd seeing her without green or blue skin. None of the musical numbers/songs seemed remarkable. I was actually able to get through the whole film which is more than I can say for 'Wicked'. Not sure it should have won Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) at the Golden Globes. I would have gone with Challengers/A Real Pain/The Substance. Don't have an issue with the other awards it picked up.

Current Rotten Tomatoes grades (76% with critics, 57% audience) is probably accurate.

Audiard has been disappointing to me since A Prophet, which I was confident had him poised for imminent greatness. Turns out it was just the clear peak masterpiece of a good-not-great career.

Had made a mental note to watch it given the buzz it received at the Golden Globes, so the wife and I tuned in. After the rousing musical number about transgender surgery, I was done.

I watched about 15 minutes of it and all I could think was "Cop Rock."

Once in a while I check YouTube for Cop Rock clips. That one guy who is still around as an actor was very sexy and I liked the way he scream/belted out those songs.

Until this thread I didn’t realize Emilia Perez was a f……g musical. Gawd. Now I will avoid it as I avoid all, Cop Rock was an anomaly for me. And Wicked? Not a chance.

I love me some Cop Rock.

But it's not exactly Oscar material.

I know, right? First they started letting women over 40 into movies, then it was ugly women, now it's women who aren't even women. Where does it end? It's like Hollywood doesn't care at all anymore about whether Baby Boomer dudes get boners.

I was all set to watch Emilia Perez and had just started it when I read that it is a musical. Maybe I read that here? Anyway, folks, I don’t do musicals. I’ve managed to avoid anything WICKED for more than a decade.

Not gonna watch a musical.

Having now watched 40 minutes of Emilia Perez, I take back what I said about Cop Rock. Cop Rock was way better than this. At least it actually had songs and musical numbers. They didn't just talk-sing dialogue for a couple of minutes at random points. :?

It seriously seems like Audiard shot the movie, and left some half-finished scenes where he'd insert the musical numbers, and then never got around to it. Did their Kickstarter funding run out or something? What the actual blank?

I feel like the politics are overshadowing that this movie is just bad.

I saw it earlier this evening. It is certainly unusual. The main point seems to be that people can change themselves and have a fresh start towards redemption for past transgressions. The musical numbers make the whole thing a bit bizarre, but are actually pretty good. Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez both give good performances, and the trans woman playing a trans woman is a standout. I don't know that it deserves a best picture Oscar, but I do think it's worth seeing.

Even though it has some musical numbers, it's really not a musical. If you dismiss all musicals, you deprive yourself of some great stuff. Have you never seen West Side Story?

It's funny that you think West Side Story is the film that would convince someone who is averse to movie musicals. It's the embodiment of everything ridiculous about the genre. It's like somebody said "I don't like horror movies" and you responded "But what about The Exorcist??"

We certainly agree that Emilia Perez is "really not a musical." If only Audiard had taken the next step and made it not at all a musical, it might be watchable. The West Side Storys of the world are overwrought and silly, but at least they have the courage of their convictions.

It seems we disagree on what makes great art. That is good, however, because art is subjective. I respect your opinion, but I have to ask; what is wrong with The Exorcist?
