To Dine or Drink at Bliss, Men Must be 35; Women 30

Post by Pink Freud »

It's a Caribbean restaurant at 11836 West Florissant (is that Dellwood? Ferguson?). The owners say they want a mature, sexy vibe, and there's been too much "drama" from younger customers.

The quote: "As a Black-owned business, Bliss Caribbean Restaurant is dedicated to providing North County with an upscale dining experience," a Facebook post read. "To ensure a grown and sexy atmosphere, we require all guests to be 30 or older for women and 35 or older for men. This policy helps us maintain a sophisticated environment, uphold our standards, and support the sustainability of our unique ambiance."

Will they check IDs at the door, or suddenly become a go-to place for seniors tired of loud music and louder patrons? I hope they succeed, but any bets on how long this policy remains in place?

This story has been picked up in recent days by USA Today and the NY Times, so expect to see it on network TV news soon, too. They have no newscast if their daily papers don't arrive.

Today's Times story showed the interior on a very slow afternoon. There are way, way too many tables, stationed way too close together, making it difficult for its customers' "mature, sexy" conversations to take place. Also, two dozen empty tables is a terrible first impression.

Space them out more; cut the number of tables by at least half; create the impression that diners are fortunate to snag a table; and watch business increase. Scarcity sells!

North St. Louis County needs thid kind of place as a reaction and counter to the idiotic rappe

I'd hate to see some headline-hunting lawmaker go after the owners for the age restriction. Let the market decide. And some too young to dine there will gripe. David Brinkley (kids, ask your grandparents) famously said "Successful people build firm foundations from the bricks their lessers and critics throw at them."

North St. Louis County seriously needs this kind of place to show its idiotic rapper-aping gangsta wannabes who destroyed Jennings, Dellwood, Ferguson, and Berkeley how to make it to a nice lifestyle in your 30s and older without fearing a cop coming through the door.

More businesses should do this.
