Anyone know what happened with/to J. C. Corcoran (this time)?

Post by Pink Freud »

I've been listening to his daily podcasts ("Undisclosed Location") on Spotify for two years, but there's been none (on Spotify) since May 21. On his K-WULF morning radio gig his mornings are now manned by Asher "Smash" Benrubi.

I sent an e-mail to J. C. last week with no reply to this point. He's had serious health issues in recent years, so I wonder. He spends half the year in St. Louis; half near Clearwater FL.

Does anyone honestly know?

I'm hoping for just one or two credible, accurate responses among the dozens of J. C. haters who will reply here.

Apparently he still has a loyal following.
But as always, he's his own worst enemy.

Agreed on both statements. His resume is getting as long as Dr. Richard Kimble's. I wonder why he stopped his podcasts.

It's official-- he's suing!
Of course he is.
He claims even professional JC haters will have his back!!
Be prepared to be knocked on our collective backsides when the entire story comes out!!!

I gave them ample opportunity to do the right thing. They didn’t take it. And now we go to court. And even the most die-hard, professional JC Corcoran haters are gonna line up behind me on this one. Turns out radio management hasn’t gotten any more honest over the years. The entire story will knock you on your (donkey).
(The Post Dispatch is already messaging me for it.) I’ll tell you the whole thing next week.

Now he's posting that the truth --- well, his truth --- will hit the fan Thursday. Surely this will compete with the Biden-Trump debate for the day's news headlines and social media chatter.

I've been a huge fan and backer of J. C. for four decades, but this stuff --- something like 15 firings now??? --- gets tired. He's becoming Kevin Slaten 2.0. J. C. posted a cartoon the other day of "management" standing on a plank dangling over the edge of a cliff, supported ONLY by "best employee", whom the manager is about to shoot.

Lather...wince...repeat. :x

And he still has ignored his podcast listeners since May 21.

OK, here's J. C.'s story:

A good six months before I even started the morning show on KWULF I could see the place was a mess. I can’t recall exactly how many colleagues warned me not to get mixed up with the place or the people that were already there, but I really wanted to get back on the air in St. Louis, and nobody else was knocking on the door. Despite the fact the station had no ratings, no significant revenue and lacked any discernible direction, the inhabitants of this embarrassment of a radio station had their heels ground in and fought against even the smallest of changes.

That’s the thing about me. Throughout my career, I’ve almost never gone into a place that’s thriving. I’m a turn-around guy. Historically, I’ve been brought in to spearhead a major change. And I’ve been good at it. It’s easy to forget when I got to KSHE in 1984, they were being beaten by KWK and were mired in seventh place. Within a year we were out-of-distance from our FM competitors, and set ratings records that will never be broken. Three years later I did the same at KSD, and again at K-HITS in the early 2000’s. That’s THREE also-rans taken to #1.

How many of you knew Christopher Walken was an accomplished dancer until he displayed his skills one night on SNL? Geena Davis qualified for the Olympics in archery. Margot Robbie can do tattoos. But because everyone in St. Louis knows me only as a morning radio guy, most don’t know I’m actually well-versed in radio programming, strategy, research and marketing. But guess what happens when the boss forgets to TELL anyone he’s authorized you to do so?? So the girls decided to come after me.

I took over the KWULF morning show in May of last year on both the original signal way out west, and also the brand new St. Louis County-based spot on the dial. Because the station barely saw a dime worth of business at the time of the launch, I agreed to delay payment of my minuscule salary “for a few months,” until the place could get up on its feet. When I still hadn’t seen any money SEVEN months later I began to raise the issue with the station. “You’ll get your money,” I was told repeatedly.

On February 23rd of this year a staff meeting was held without my knowledge. I’m told the owner of the station, Buzz Eckelkamp, a millionaire lawyer and President of the Bank of Washington, Missouri, came THIS CLOSE to pulling the plug on the whole place. No ratings. Little revenue. Too much bizarre, unrecognizable music.

And, for whatever reason, there was an attempt by the girls to have me ousted. (It was later conveyed to me by the station manager that their reason was “jealousy.”) At that meeting a private, group text the three of us had participated in months earlier in which I made unflattering comments about the owner’s lack of understanding of the place was presented TO him in an effort to make me look bad. (I also learned one of their husbands absolutely detests me, and that she had to go home every night and hear him blast me. Odd that a man who recently threw a beer can at one of the actors onstage at The Westport Playhouse would be judging ME!)

About two months ago I was approached by two representatives of KWULF who asked me if I could help find Smash a sponsor so that they could bring him in to do the afternoon show, something I was able to do the very next day. All systems “GO,” right?

On April 18th, five weeks before the 40th anniversary of my first show in St. Louis in 1984, I sent the station manager an e-mail pointing out that I’d now been working at KWULF for a full year but still hadn’t been paid a dime, and that it simply would not be possible to continue like this. I gave the station five weeks to come up with the money. (For the record, I’m trying to buy a house, and it’s almost impossible to get a loan when you’re not receiving a regular paycheck.)

Well…………I never heard from the station again. On May 24th I simply stopped doing the show. Smash replaced me on the morning show two weeks later.

As if to add insult to injury, do you recall the station I worked at for five years before KWULF? The place that went behind my back to steal my sponsors by under-cutting my price? FOURTEEN grand. Poof! Gone like that. Later he was behind some childish pranks like publishing my phone number on a fake Craigslist ad, and secretly having my Cardinals press credentials cancelled.

The person responsible for these sleazy, back-stabbing moves at 93.1 was recently brought aboard to do the night-time show at KWULF. WHAT was the point of allowing vermin into the building?? Well, it must have been money. I learned HE is paying THEM to air his radio show.

On June 10th I received a call from station owner, Buzz Eckelkamp. In a cordial and respectful ninety-minute conversation I learned he hadn’t even been TOLD about the dispute, or that I even WAS being paid until recently. (I guess he thought I was volunteering?!?! Or that the small amount of money I was being paid by one of my sponsors for live commercials and personal services unrelated to the radio station was supposed to replace a weekly salary?!?!)

Regardless, we agreed to meet in St. Louis last week. I waited for eight days. Finally, at 9:15 PM last Thursday night I was asked to meet with, instead, the station manager just three hours before my flight the following day. At that meeting I was told that KWULF has been bleeding $60,000.00 a MONTH, and that regardless of the fact the station is owned by a millionaire banker, they simply weren’t going to pay me the thousands and thousands of dollars they owe.

I gave them one final opportunity to do the right thing. That deadline was yesterday at noon. It was ignored. So, next week I will be filing suit against owner, Buzz Eckelkamp, station manager, Bill Moir, and east Central Broadcasting, LLC.
All of this has produced a sort of ripple effect in my life and career. Tomorrow I’ll explain. (BTW, to address some of your complaints, this is not an attempt at melodrama. My team of lawyers has a lot to say about what I can and can’t do at the moment.). But tomorrow it’ll all make sense.

On an unrelated note, my heart goes out to my pals like Ted Williams & Tom Schwarz, plus Frank and Bernie, ALL of whom will be losing their jobs this week at 590 KFNS which is shutting down. This is an ugly business.

Freaking Pity Party!!!
He's talking about me, and not being truthful.
1) Lord only knows who doxxed him on Craigslist. It's not like he hasn't agitated a great many people though the years.
2) No one secretly removed his MLB press credentials. He was no longer associated with Donze Communications and they were passed on to an in house employee.
BTW, he used those press credentials for over 18 months before the baton was passed on to our sports director.
3) My Nitewatch syndication is on 5 stations, an NO I do not pay those stations, it is a barter arrangement as most are. They have 6 minutes of Local commercial clearance, I have 3 minutes of network commercials, and own the naming rights.

In regards to his treatment while at Donze Communications, there's more to the story than what he shares with the general public on social media.

I have always admired his god given talents and abilities as a content provider.
He may not believe that, but it's true.
I don't always agree with his political views, but I respect them, just as I would with anyone else.

There is a lot of moving parts in small market radio these days, and even more hands out wanting a piece of the pie.
It's not a license to print $$$ like it was in the 70's and 80's. It's a tough business
so hard decisions are made daily in regards to keeping up payroll and paying the bills.
That occasionally makes the GM a less than popular guy with the station talent.

I truly believe that he wants good things for the stations, he has an active role in.
I know that he is always focused on improving the station product.

Now as far as his financial dispute with East Central Broadcasting, I have no idea what arrangements were made. That's not my battle, and definitely none of my business.
I do know this much, he should have left me out of that conversation, that's just ugly.
