Yes, this is extremely important; especially if you have an indoor domesticared cat, or even a dog, that don't have the experience of deaing with predators. And in many areas, form the suburbs to even in the decrepit anegd now wider-opened inner-urban areas, coyotes are becoming more common.
Watch over your younger kids when they play in the back, too.
Get yourself a AR-15 style rifle, practice with it , and then shoot the coyote when you see it. Yes, there is a 'season" for Yotes, but "The Code also specifies that you may shoot or trap damage-causing coyotes out-of-season without a permit"

Does the county still have the law that they will pay residents $0.25 for each coyote hide? I saw it on a list of strange laws still on the books.
Not sure. I know there was a bounty on yotes in the past, but I would bet it's just a tad North of two-bits these days if it still exists.
Strange Laws? Oh, we could have some fun with that.
In Oklahoma, it's illegal to hunt whales without a license. Some guy got busted for fishing without a license way back when. His defense that he was hunting whales. and VIOLA - a new law was made...... LOL

My average size house cat encountered a red fox this morning (still dark). No wounds on either animal but lots of ruffled egos.
Our two cats are 99% housebound but my wife will let them out in the early morning for a brief period of time. They don't roam and are usually back in the house in 5 - 10 minutes. Me? I won't let them outside unless it is light out and I'm out there with them.
Although we are in the heart of suburbia, we have foxes, rabbits, deer, coyotes (lots of coyotes), skunks, chipmunks, etc. and of course dogs. Our subdivision has a "no fences" policy too. Have not seen any porcupines to date.

I guess that only leaves dolphins and porpoises now. ;-)

I'm only aware of one whale in Oklahoma, and I don't think it would bite.
