Too Much Soccer

Post by Bighorn66 »

Said Bighorn66, NEVER!!!!

We had Euros
CONCACAF Nations League
Copo America
UEFA Nation's League
Gold Cup

And this weekend:

US vs. Mexico
US vs Jamaica
Spain vs Greece (tie in first leg)
Spain vs. Sweden (loss in first leg)
Italy vs. Switzerland
Brasil vs. Argentina
Netherlands vs. Norway

All in a full club year.

Fantastico!

Would we be better off with fewer games?

If the players had more time off would the games we were left with be better?

A World Cup every two years is insanity.

Nations League? Was that REALLY necessary?

Maybe Pulisic and Reyna would have been healthy during qualifying if they hadn’t been playing so many games?

Do the players deserve more time off?

This is a fantastic window of games in a fantastic year for soccer. Nobody would be a fool to question that.

I do agree with Rosthol though that because of COVID and the switching of the 2022 WC to the late Fall, players are playing way too many matches. I also believe that holding the World Cup every two years is insane. It also harms EURO, COPA America, and other quadrennial events held in non WC years.

Did your knees go out when you played for Harris Stowe.

This is a long read but it tells the woe of the wünderkind from Spain/Barcelona/Olympics, Pedri Gonzales who played seventy-three games over the span of the 10-1/2 months. The 18 year old was injured in September and has been unable to return to match fitness. I put the blame on Ronald Koeman who had plenty of options (Riqui Puig among them) and the Spanish Olympic coach who called him up after the Euros.

If there were less games this would not happen.

Yeah, there has been a real slog for a number of these guys who play a long season, the Euro championship this summer, the continuation of qualifying this fall and winter. That's a lot of matches. The US had two tournaments this summer, although they had largely two different rosters. But, just look at the injuries the US team has encountered.

And won both of them.
