Urban League Opens New City Community Center

St. Louis, MO – The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis Inc., a United Way Agency certified by the Better Business Bureau,  is thankful to announce that we are expanding our capacity to serve those in need by opening a new Community Outreach Center in the city of St. Louis. Centrally located at 935 N. Vandeventer, a site chosen for its ease of access to those depending on public transportation, this newly renovated facility is projected to serve more than 30,000 clients annually. Our “So Thankful” celebration and open house will be held Friday, August 3, from 12:00 to 4:00pm with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 1:00pm.

The increased costs of cooling during this hot summer, increased food and gas prices and high unemployment all have contributed to more and more families slipping into poverty.  In the face of this increasing demand for services, the Urban League was awarded an additional $3.8 million contract from the State of Missouri to administer the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a program that provides help to thousands of low income families in paying utility bills.  The added capacity of this new outreach center will allow the Urban League to more quickly and efficiently serve our many clients.    Other services offered at this location will include foreclosure prevention and housing counseling, a food pantry, residential weatherization to reduce energy consumption, free computer training, employment counseling and placement, and voter registration.

The Urban League is “So thankful” for our generous supporters that made this center possible: The Centene Corporation, Ameren Missouri, St. Louis City License Collector Michael D. McMillan, Alderwoman Marlene Davis and Alderman Terry Kennedy.  “We are grateful for the high level of community support and public-private partnerships that have made our new community outreach center possible. Our clients will now be able to receive their services with greater comfort and accessibility,” said James H. Buford, president and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc.

The New Urban League Community Outreach Center will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Each year, the Urban League works to fulfill its mission of Empowering

Communities and Changing Lives of over 50,000 individuals in St. Louis City, St.

Louis County and St. Clair County, IL.  The Urban League is certified by the

Better Business Bureau and is a proud member of the United Way of Greater St.

Louis. For more information about Urban League programs and services, please call (314) 615-3600.
