Skillly.com, intends to become the YouTube of sustainable practices. “Skillly.com is about giving viewers the ability to learn about growing food, keeping bees or building their own home from natural materials and saving money in the process.”, according to founder Aaron “iLLLy” Murphy. The environmental website will produce original instructional videos as well as organize existing web video content following the principles behind the permaculture movement; care of the earth; care of people; and a return of surplus time, energy and money, to the cause of bettering the earth and its people. The campaign, which launched on June 23rd, 2013, will “normalize the growing culture of ecological living” according to Murphy.
The internet currently hosts countless short videos about low-carbon living but Skillly.com stands to become the leading delivery platform in this burgeoning market. Funds raised will be used to give users a way to easily find earth-friendly tutorials with a stylized and intuitive user interface but also help fund the creation of original Skillly educational content.
After 19 years of working as a Supervising Sound Mixer for TV programs like Top Chef, The Real World and After Lately with Chelsea Handler, Murphy created Skillly as a way to share the Youtube videos that inspired him to “slow down and live better by making better choices about how I consume resources”. In 2012, Murphy and Skillly co-founder, Rae Machado, left Los Angeles for Dancing Rabbit Eco-village in NE Missouri, where they now live and work.
