QUICK ACTION AT ATHLETIC CLUB SAVES MAN IN CARDIAC ARREST

Group honored by Clayton city officials

St. Louis, Mo., June 5, 2013 – Wellbridge Athletic Club and Spa in Clayton, along with three of its members, were recently honored by city officials for their role in resuscitating a 62-year-old man who'd gone into cardiac arrest during an indoor cycling class at the club.

Shelly Bittle, the instructor of the class in which Jerry Budai collapsed while on his bike, quickly applied the emergency training procedures that the club has in place.  Club members who were in the same class, Dr. Robert Barrack, Dr. Nikoleta Kolovos and Lisa Simani-Oren – all medical professionals – assessed Budai and recognized the symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest; Budai had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. Barrack and Kolovos immediately performed chest compressions and rescue breathing as they prepped the club’s automated external defibrillator (AED) – designed to restore a regular heartbeat by analyzing rhythmic irregularities. They attached the AED electrodes to Budai’s chest and delivered a shock to his heart, and soon after he regained consciousness. Upon the paramedics’ arrival, Budai was transferred to St. Mary’s hospital of Richmond Heights and is expected to make a full recovery.

“It’s vital that the heart return to normal rhythm as soon as possible in the event of cardiac arrest, as a few seconds can be the difference between life and death. This is why our club – and all Wellbridge locations – have AEDs onsite and have every one of our associates trained to use them,” said Greg McCarthy, General Manager of Wellbridge Athletic Club and Spa in Clayton.

Wellbridge Athletic Club and Spa in Clayton and club members Barrack, Kolovos and Simani-Oren were honored by the City of Clayton and the Clayton Fire Department for their quick actions that saved Budai’s life.
