June 22, 2012 -- Physicians Professional Indemnity Association (PPIA), Missouri’s only physician-directed medical malpractice insurance company, has teamed with the state’s largest professional liability insurance broker, The Keane Insurance Group, to provide coverage to Missouri physicians.
Effective today, Keane will represent PPIA with physicians across Missouri, shifting its affiliation from a company that recently transferred most of its assets and liabilities to a Kansas stock company.
PPIA was created in 2003 when skyrocketing professional liability insurance premiums were forcing some physicians out of business in Missouri. Based in Jefferson City, PPIA is governed by a 12-member board of directors, of whom nine are physicians.
Keane, which has 2,000 insured physicians in Missouri, chose to partner with PPIA because of its unique record as a physician-led company.
“We appreciate and value what we’ve seen in PPIA being true to what it’s supposed to be as a physician-directed company. That should be important to doctors. Ultimately, everything is done by PPIA for the benefit of the policyholders,” said John Keane, president of the Keane Insurance Group. “The fact that PPIA is truly a physician-run, member company is clear in the way it functions and in its lack of controversy and drama.”
Keane founded The Keane Insurance Group in 1995 after building a respected career in the industry. The company, headquartered in Kirkwood, Mo., now operates in 46 states and is one of the largest medical liability insurance brokers in the nation. It serves more than 5,000 physicians, hospitals and surgery centers.
PPIA President Carrie Carda, M.D., said the new partnership means Missouri physicians will have greater access to PPIA for their professional liability coverage.
“The Keane agency has a solid reputation for delivering quality, personal service to Missouri physicians. The agency’s brokers are very knowledgeable about professional liability insurance and are trusted by physicians,” Carda stated. “It’s a good fit with PPIA, because our only purpose is to serve Missouri physicians.”
