Riverbend Down Syndrome Association invites public to first Buddy/Walk/Ride
The Riverbend Down Syndrome Association (RSDA) invites public and participants to their first Buddy Walk, Saturday, October 20, 2012, at 8:30 a.m. at the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) Campus Parking Lot A in Edwardsville, IL. To participate in the bike tour, 5K fun run and a Duathalon a $25 registration fee is required which will include food, an event T-shirt and a post race medal. Registration closes October 6, 2012.
The event will consist of a 1.5 mile walk through The Gardens at SIUE and a bike tour (18, 32, 50 miles.) Prior to the walk will be a 5K fun run and a Dualthalon (5K run, 18 mile bike, 5K run.) RDSA Buddy Walk®/Run/Ride will include food, music, dancing, prizes, bounce house and much more. The Fitness Club sponsor is The Cyclery and Fitness Center in Edwardsville.
RDSA's Buddy Walk®/Run/Ride is one of over 250 Buddy Walks planned in cities across the country celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. It was developed by National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to promate acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down Syndrome. RSDA currently consists of 212 members and it grows. It is expected more than 500 particiapants will attend the RSDA Buddy Walk in October. Participants will include, but not be limited to, people with Down Syndrome, their friends, families, teachers, co-workers and other supporters. Anyone, with or without a connection to a member of the Down syndrome community, is welcomed to attend.
The National Buddy Walk Program touches thousands of lives. When it began in 1995, there were Walks in only 17 cities. With over 250 planned Walks this year it is expected more than 285,000 will participate around the country. Last year alone, Buddy Walk events raised more than $11 million to benefit national advocacy iniatives as well as local programs and services. All funds raised through the Buddy Walk support national and local programs.RDSA's Buddy Walk®/Run/Ride goal is to raise $10,000 and has already raised $335. All money raised will go toward programs and services provided which include: Lose the Training Wheels bike camp, scholarships, Dierberg's Batter Up! Cooking Classes in association with Pujols Family Foundation, Kindermusik classes, Waterbabies swimming classes, dance classes plus an annual member fall picnic and holiday dance party.
