BENEFITS OF A LARGER SPACE:
The 30,000 square feet of space in the Convention Center allows for nearly all of the books to be put out on Friday giving customers the opportunity to browse through and choose from a huge selection of materials. At this location customers shop in comfort with wider aisles, cool temperatures (no matter how hot it gets outside), and plenty of convenient parking. "We are hoping to see another year of increased profits as word spreads that one of the biggest and best book fairs in the area will once again be held in a great facility," said Book Fair Chair Marilyn Krebs.
BARGAIN PRICES - GREAT SELECTION:
Over 250,000 hardbacks, paperbacks, sets, records and magazines! One of the largest Book Fairs in the St. Louis area. Most hardbacks are sold for $2.00 each, regular size paperbacks for 50¢ each and oversize paperbacks $1.00. All children's and teen books are sold for 25¢. Magazines are 10¢ each. Some very old books, reference materials and special items are priced separately. On Sunday, books are sold for $5 a bag - standard size grocery bag provided.
All books are sorted into popular categories to make it as easy as possible for buyers to find the items they want. Some of the most popular categories are cookbooks, children's, crafts, art, western, mysteries, science fiction and biographies. There is a separate area for children's and teen materials.
All proceeds from the Book Fair are donated to the St. Charles City-County Library District. In 2007 the Friends Book Fair grossed over $79,884. Proceeds from the 2007 Fair and other fund-raisers have been used to fund the annual children's, teen and adult reading programs, special events featuring authors and local personalities, staff training workshops, functions recognizing volunteer and staff efforts, construction and expansion of new branches, the purchase of furniture and equipment for all libraries, outdoor classrooms for library branches, college scholarships for St. Charles County high school students, the staff and Friends health fair, and monthly book discussion groups at branches throughout the County.
Donations of used books are taken all year. Donations may be dropped off at any branch of the St. Charles City-County Library District.
The Friends will donate the "leftovers" from the 2008 Fair to non-profit organizations (schools, churches, etc.) who can come on Sunday, June 15 after 2:30 p.m. and pick them up. Leftovers from the Friends Book Fair have been used as supplemental reading materials to teach English as a second language in Africa, were collected by the USO for their Lambert Airport lounge, and were used in the state of Missouri's correctional institute libraries. Books will be given away on a first-come-first-serve basis. Non-profit organizations interested in any of the leftover items should contact Lynn Reichmuth at 441-2300 ext. 1596 prior to the Fair.
Approximately 200 volunteers are needed for a successful Book Fair. Anyone interested in working a 3 to 4 hour shift at the Fair or in helping to set up the Fair, should contact Lynn Reichmuth at 441-2300 ext. 1596. Volunteer jobs include stocking tables, tallying sales, cashiering, providing information and loading and unloading trucks. Volunteers will be notified of their duties prior to the Book Fair.
