Jeremy Rutherford:
Hope everybody is enjoying the weather. Best time of the year, especially considering hockey is right around the corner. Let's get chattin ....
schronote: Thanks for the chats JR. I have only been to 1 summer skate so far but I have a few guys I thought stood out, I am curious if you have been and who stood out to you?
Jeremy Rutherford: I've been to the Blues' summer scrimmages twice in the past couple of weeks, and to me it's too informal and way too early to talk about who has stood out. I get more out of going into the locker room and talking to players about what kind of training they did this summer. How much weight have they gained. I wrote a story on Patrik Berglund that will be in the paper in the next few days, and in the article, you'll read that Berglund gained about eight ounds in the offseason. He ended last year at 212 and says he's about 220 now. Obviously everybody is in great shape just before the start of camp, but with all due respect, those are the things I'm interested in.
Andy: Hey Jr,
Thanks for doing this forum during the offseason. Do you know where I can find the upcoming schedule for training camp?
Thanks,
Andy
Jeremy Rutherford: I don't know that it's been released yet, but I'm hearing that the Blues will have on-ice testing at the Ice Zone on Sept. 17, followed by their first practice Sept. 18 at the Mills. That's open to the public. Then things will switch to Scottrade, and I'm not sure about the access at that point.
For more information about when the Blues will be at the Mills, follow @STLMillsIceZone on Twitter.
Ryan: Just finished watching 'Backstage in Sweden With The Blues' again (I still have it on DVR from last year!) and I was wondering: What have been the overall observations of our current players with their new coach? The guys seemed to have been pretty motivated over the course of that trip, and I wonder what the club is doing to encourage the same type of bonding in the absence of an over-seas trip this year?
Also, has there been any talk about where/which of our lower level forwards/new signings will fit with the big club (i.e. Hensick, Della-Rovere, McRae, Porter)? And Sobotka's role?
Thanks for your time. Ready for October!!
-R
Jeremy Rutherford:
There wasn't much turnover this summer, other than the departures of Tkachuk, Kariya, Mason, Weaver ... I'm sure the Blues will have some sort of team-bonding event, but as positive as the experience in Sweden was, they certainly don't need to do that every year.
The players like Davis Payne. The No. 1 thing I hear from them is that he's a good listener. He'll take the players aside, listen to what they have to say and come up with a solution. But don't think because he's a good listener, he's not demanding. He asks a lot of them, too.
Hensick has a chance to make the Blues, but he'll probably start in Peoria. McRae and Porter will also be in Peoria. I'm not sure about Della-Rovere yet. Sobotka will be with the Blues and will likely play a fourth-line center role.
Doug R.: Hi JR,
My question is in regards to Tarsenko. I'm not sure if you've seen him play, but do you think that he's as legit as many fans are making him out to be? I realize that many hockey experts have claimed that he would've been a top-5 draft pick this year if not for the KHL factor, but Blues fans talk about him as though he'll walk onto the first line on day one. This is based on the assumption, of course, that he'll come over to North America once his upcoming season in the KHL is complete.
So based on what you know, does the hype seem justified?
Thanks so much!
Jeremy Rutherford:
I have not seen him play, but I've watched some video and he obviously has a lot of skill. I read the same stuff you read that many believe he was one of the top two or three forwards in the draft. Remember Jarmo Kekalainen said that if he was from North America, he would have went in the top five overall.
If you missed it, Tarasenko recently tore up his two-year deal with the KHL and signed a one-year contract. So he'll be in Russia next year, with the plan to play in North America in two years. I guess you'll have to hold your breath until we see him here.
mike: mr. rutherford,
great column as usual. I'm going off the beaten path a little. Overall the blues have done a great job and the fans have supported them well. I just want to say that the Blues owe the fans stable ownership. I'm not saying they aren't trying, but I have read several stories about money trouble and possible moving. Thank you very much
Jeremy Rutherford:
Dave Checketts wants to have stable ownership, too. No one wants to resurrect a franchise and then see all the work go down the tubes. But this is a business and the facts are that Checketts needs to find some financial support. If he can't find the support, the Blues' future will be up in the air. But in my estimation, it's too soon for fans to lose sleep about what might happen.
If TowerBrook called Checketts today and said, "We're divesting this afternoon" ... and Checketts didn't have a new investor, then start worrying. But I would let this play out a little before making an assumptions.
royvern: JR, getting twitchy. This close to camp and not much Blues news. Do you think it significant that Jaro is not here yet. Won't it be culture shock for him coming from the hockey mecca where hockey is everything to the Blues who have a lot of trouble being the lead story in sports here?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I will definitely have more Blues stories in the paper over the next couple of weeks, and then the week before camp starts, we'll have something in the paper everyday.
As far as Halak, he didn't play in Montreal his entire life, so he knows there are different hockey climates. In fact, in the minors, he played in Long Beach, so ....
But there will be plenty of attention on the Blues this season. It might not reach the level in Montreal, but maybe that will be a welcomed transition for Halak.
Justin: Do you feel that Halak will continue to be a dominant goaltender and make up for the blues lack of offense?
Jeremy Rutherford:
Halak definitely has the tools, but he's never played 60-plus NHL games, so it's a wait-and-see. But he's got the tools and the resume to suggest that he can get the job done.
Halak can't make up for the lack of offense. Chris Mason had a fairly good goals-against and save-percentage and it didn't help the offense. Halak may be able to steal a few games, but if the Blues want to be contenders, they've got to score. Pretty simple.
PCBDieHardBlue: Which rookie on the Blues could have a break-out season? Which veteran?
Jeremy Rutherford:
Rookie: Pietrangelo
Veteran: I don't consider Oshie a veteran, but I think he's ready to break out.
steve: Hi, What exactly is a blues app?
Has JD signed a extension yet I remember hearing they were going to work on one but have not seen anything else on it. Does it have anything to do with the ownership status, because he seems to be Checketts man and maybe he will leave if checketts does not get to retain his position.
Thanks
stev
Jeremy Rutherford:
The Post-Dispatch is coming out with a Blues' "Application," which you can download on your cell phone (if you have a fancy smart phone). Basically, the App (which I believe will cost $2.99) will give you the most updates information on the Blues. It will have scores, highlights, news from the locker room, twitter feeds, etc.
Davidson has not signed an extension. His contract expires next June. Checketts told me at the end of last season that Davidson would be his president as long as Checketts owned the team. He also said that they would address Davidson's extension prior to the start of this season.
Obviously, with the investor search, the situation is fluid. I believe that things are on hold right now with contract extensions until a replacement investor is found. Stay tuned.
MIkeS: JR,
Looking forward to the season regardless of the outcome, just nice to have hockey back.
1) What does Pietrangelo have to do to make the lineup this year? If he doesn't, does he have any options to force the Blues to deal him? Do you get the sense that he and/or his agent feel that he should have been up here by now and they might be looking for another situation? Or do the Blues control him for a bit?
2) Is Halak not being here rubbing either the players or the front office the wrong way? Or is it not that big of a deal just yet? Would hate to see this move get started on an awkward foot.
Thanks as always for doing these chats throughout the year!
Jeremy Rutherford:
1. Pietrangelo just has to be poised and confident. If he does that, he'll make the team. He's got the talent, and he knows what to expect after getting a taste the past two seasons. In my recent conversations with him, I get the vibe that he will be confident. He seems like one of the guys now, after spending the past two seasons trying to prove something to everybody. The Blues hold his rights for seven years. Unless some magic deal comes along, I don't think the Blues have any interest in dealing him.
2. On Halak, not that I'm aware of. The players I have spoken with about Halak can't believe he's a Blue, and they're looking forward to him arriving at the Ice Zone. But no one has said, "Why isn't he here yet?"
Kevin: What do you think about Cam Janssen planning a fight with Krys Barch from the Dallas Stars via Twitter? Do you see this starting a new trend?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I talked to Janssen about that and he said it was all in good fun. Janssen and Barch have the same agent (Scott Norton), so keep in mind, any publicity is good publicity.
mattsquadcar: Dearest and Finest JR,
I am surprised that no team has thrown an Offer Sheet at Bobby Ryan yet. With such talent and the fact that he is already producing, I can't remember a player that is worth giving up Draft Picks as a RFA like Ryan. What are your thoughts on why Ryan hasn't seen any action?
Also, it has been reported that Andrew Cogliano might be available via trade. What are your thoughts on a player like Cogliano in a Bluenote? He is undersized at 5'9 but has produced fairly well in his first 3 seasons playing in the 3rd and 4th line of the Oilers and has played in all 82 games in each season thus far. Would Cogliano fit into the Blues lineup as a 2nd line center? Or is that too high of a projection?
You're the best....around. No one's ever gonna keep you down. Cheers
-matt
Jeremy Rutherford:
No team has made Ryan an offer sheet because it will cost mega $$$$. Most teams either don't have the cap room, or don't have the $$$ to sign him. You're right, he's definitely worth the draft picks that a team would have to give up, but Anaheim would likely match what he's offered.
Cogliano has been on the market for a while. The Oilers were trying to send him to Ottawa last year when they were hoping to get Dany Heatley. He had a fairly good rookie year a couple of years ago. Remember when he beat the Blues in overtime? I think it was his second straight overtime winner. He's been up and down, though. I haven't seen him enough to know what kind of ceiling he has, but it's not a good sign if Edmonton is rumored to want to move him.
Andrew Sampson: Hi Jeremy
What do you think of this scenario for awarding points in a game: Assuming the flow of the game is the same; sixty minutes of regulation, four on four overtime and the shootout if necessary, award two points for a victory in regulation or overtime, only one point for a shootout victory, and no points for the losing team. Thoughts?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I see your logic: both teams will be looking to win the game in OT and get the two points. That has some merit, but I don't think the NHL would consider giving one point for a game that goes past OT. The system needs to be tweaked, but I like two points for the winner of any game.
bugmanblues: Hey JR...
Is Weaver still just sitting out there and if so, will the Blues try to get him possibly closer to the start of the season...I was thinking that probably not so Strachan and Petro have a shot on the team, but Weaver was sooooo crucial to the #1 PK in the league...
Jeremy Rutherford:
Weaver said a few weeks ago that he was on the verge of signing a two-year deal with Florida, but I never heard that it was official. Did I miss that?
Either way, he's not coming back to St. Louis. I'm glad Strachan and Pietrangelo are going to get a strong look ... they deserve it. But I've said many times, the Blues will miss Weaver's work on the PK. Look for Erik Johnson to get some time on the PK this year.
MGM: Jr,
What's the status on John Davidson? This being his last year under contract, any word on an extension? Could they possibly be grooming Al McInnis for the role?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I mentioned earlier that as long as Checketts is owner, JD will be his guy. Obviously there are other circumstances that will dictate what happens, so we'll have to wait and see. If the investor search drags on, it will be a factor in whether Davidson gets re-signed during the season or it plays out into next summer. Again, his contract takes him through next June.
I don't believe Al MacInnis has any interest in being a club president at this time.
bluesnavyfan: Jeremy-
First time poster, long time reader (well as long as you can be as a 23 year old). Just wanted to know among the teams younger players, who is the biggest ladies man?
Jeremy Rutherford:
23? You've been reading for a loooong time! Haha.
As far as the biggest ladies man, all of them think they are . . . I don't want to pump their tires, so I'm going to leave this one alone.
rammer: Any word ideas on the captaincy this year?
Oh, and "Go Lancers."
Jeremy Rutherford:
Same captain as far as I know.
Go Lancers. I just drove by the semi-new LHSS football field for the first time the other day ... pretty impressive.
Steve: Hey JR, thanks as always for doing the chats even though there's not much going on in Blues-land.
Last night, I saw the new Blues ad with David Backes during the Cardinals game for the first time (not sure how long it's been running though). It seemed to have an almost apologetic tone and included Backes speaking directly to the camera and saying "we're not kids anymore". What are your thoughts on the new ad campaign? Will we see Jon Hamm wearing a 10-year old blues hat again that he claims is 15-years old?
Totally unrelated - can Charles Glenn ice skate?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I thought the ad was funny. I don't think Backes was being apologetic. He just speaks pretty monotone. The theme of the commercial was that they're not kids anymore, which is what most people are talking about.
Anything is better than the John Hamm ad. It was OK at first, but the 10,000th time I saw it ....
I'm assuming Big Charles can skate because with the team trimming payroll this summer, there was a rumor that the team tried to add "left winger" to his job description.
mattz: Since this team won't make the playoffs this year. What kind of spin will Davidson and Armstrong put on it?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I guess you'll have to wait till April to find out.
THE ONE AND ONLY BIG AL: JR WHERE ARE THE GOALS GOING TO COME FROM??? HALAK BETTER BE DOING YOGA OVER THE SUMMER BECAUSE THE ONLY WAY WE MAKE THE PLAYOFFS (PLAYOFFS???) IS IF HE CAN KICK FLIES OUT OF THE AIR, AND THEN WE WILL WIN 1-0 0R 2-1!!!
SO TELL BOYES BERGY TJ PERRON EJ AND MCDONALD OUR SEASON RESTS ON THEIR SHOULDERS!! AND BIG AL SAID NO EXCUSES!!!
Jeremy Rutherford: HEY BIG AL ... WHY ARE YOU TALKING SO LOUD?
rohan: Hello JR:
What is the latest on Paul Kariya? I had heard he may head to
Anaheim...but no news lately.
Jeremy Rutherford:
I haven't talked to Paul but ESPN's Scott Burnside tweeted today that any rumors of Kariya going to Anaheim are premature.
filmtopia: Hey JR
I know you have said that the team we have today will most likely be the team that opens the season, however if any of the following players are still available coming training camp, wouldn't the Blues have to consider them for their offensive potential at a reasonable price:
Ruslan Fedotenko
Patrick O'Sullivan
Tim Kennedy
Marek Svatos
Mike Comrie
Jonathan Cheechoo
Jeremy Rutherford:
The Blues have probably already given those players as much consideration as they're going to get, and the team decided against it. Every conversation I've had with team execs ends with "We're going to go with the guys that we've got. We've got to give our guys a chance to see what they can do."
Bleedbluecp2: Thank you Jeremy, for taking qùestions over the summer, it really helps us stay in tune with the team.
Checketts is looking for buyers to replace Towerbrook, what kind of owners is he looking for? Your article said that investment firms were becoming more common in the NHL. But is Checketts looking at another investment firm that wants out in a few years, or does he want something more permanent? Thanks again.
Jeremy Rutherford:
Good question. As I mentioned in the article, Checketts did business with TowerBrook because of their history together. Moving forward, my guess is that Checketts will want more certainty on how long the investor(s) stay on board. As I wrote, Checketts knew that TowerBrook had a four- or five-year window, but as some have mentioned to me, if the Blues were making money hand over fist, TowerBrook wouldn't have went anywhere.
If the investment groups are the only place Checketts can get money, then he's going to have to take it. But they probably need to break up the 75-percent into two or three parts, so the Blues aren't in the same position in four years if one investor, holding 75 percent, wants to get out.
Voltron: A question about Towerbrook.......something about an investment fund selling to keep from paying higher taxes just doesn't make sense. When they sell the Blues doesn't it stand to reason that they would re-invest the money in some new venture.....and then be subject to higher taxes on what ever they put the money into.
And if the tax cuts, that will expire at the end of this year, are the true incentive for the sale, then wouldn't that create a hard deadline of Dec 31st 2010? What happens if Citi-Bank doesn't find a buyer within Towerbrook's time-line?
Jeremy Rutherford: I'm not a tax expert, but TowerBrook can make more off their Blues' investment by getting out before January, which I mentioned in the article.
Yes, TowerBrook will put the money into something else, but when they cash in on their next investment, it will likely be under the same capital gains tax. In other words, they'll buy in with the gains tax at 20 percent and probably sell at 20, so it will be the same conditions.
The same goes with the person/group who buys into the Blues. They will get in with the gains tax being 20 percent and know that they'll be selling with it being 20 percent, or possibily more.
Yes, the 31st is a deadline in most people's estimation. SCP Worldwide said there's no deadline, but obviously it's in their best interest to take that stance publicly.
kimzey59: JR, If the season were to start right now; who would be the 14 forwards on the active roster?
Jeremy Rutherford: Perron, McDonald, Berglund, Boyes, Oshie, Backes, McClement, Steen, Crombeen, Winchester, Janssen, Sobotka, D'Agostini and possibily Hensick.
Broshie14: What days wil you be making it out to the Mills next week?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I will be on vacation next week. Last break before the season starts.
Dylan Anderson: Will T.J Oshie have a break out year and will STL make a run into the playoffs?
Jeremy Rutherford: Oshie put up some pretty good numbers this year, which the Blues need. He was very noticeable, but I just think with two years under his belt, he'll understand how to be even more effective this year. And I think he'll be able to get the most out of his hard work, which should lead to more contributions, more points.
I'm on the record as saying I don't think this is a playoff team right now.
Gopony: With Kroenke having to get rid of the Avalanche, what are the chances he ends up with rams and blues?
Jeremy Rutherford: I thought about this, but first of all, he doesn't have to get rid of the Avalanche for a few years. Also, the Avs will stay in his family. So it doesn't make much sense for him to be involved in the Blues' ownership and compete against his family.
Jon: Hey JR, thanks for the chat as always....
A few random questions....
1. Any word if Halak is in Stl yet?
2. Do the goalies have to use a certain artist or company for their masks and pads per team or is it their choice?
3. Do you think that KMOX will air any pre-season games?
4. Who do you think will have the biggest "breakout/bounce back" season, again just askin your opinion.
Thanks and LETS GO BLUES!!
Jeremy Rutherford: 1. He'll be here Sept. 10.
2. Their choice.
3. Home games.
4. Boyes.
Bloop91: Hi J.R.
If the Blues had 3 mill. to spend and could have either Stempniak or Guerin for just 1 year. Who would be your choice.
Thanks for taking our Q's
Jeremy Rutherford:
Any other year I would say Stempniak. Guerin has seen better days on the ice, but I believe the Blues could use his veteran leadership. It's tough. You don't wany Guerin to take away ice time from an Oshie, Perron, etc.
Remember Guerin was in Dallas when Doug Armstrong was there. But Guerin's time in St. Louis didn't end on the best of terms (the Blues didn't want to pay what he was asking to re-sign and that's partly why he was traded), so I don't think it would happen.
But I really like Stempniak and think he would have fit in like my wife at a shopping mall. He's really good friends with McClement, Backes, etc.
Bleed Blue: Not a question - just need to vent to someone...anyone.
I was at Scottrade last Saturday morning to get home-opener tickets. There were hundreds in line being yelled at by a "guest services" guy to STAY IN A SINGLE LINE (uh... we were).
Davis Payne personally delivered donuts to the crowd as we waited for 3 - yes 3 of 12 open ticket windows (nice touch, but please have more than 3 open windows) and then we found out the least expensive ticket was $49.50.
Well, all I can say is that's a lot to expect from fans for a team that hasn't seen much playoff time recently. Love to share that with someone in the front office, but you can't find any contact info other than the main number on the enrire Web site. Thanks for listening.
Jeremy Rutherford:
Maybe someone will read this. Good luck.
rob: I would consider myself cautiously optimistic for this season, but my optimism will quickly decrease if we have an injury to any of our top 6 forwards. In my opinion the season rides on their ability to put the puck in the net. My question is, why didn't the Blues look for more scoring depth for Peoria (namely Billy Sweatt)? I think the Blues will be fine if they stay healthy, but they are one injury away from falling fast.
Jeremy Rutherford: The Blues were interested in Sweatt, and while it would have been nice to get him, he likely wouldn't have made a difference this year. They need a proven goal scorer.
I agree with your assessment of what injuries could do to this team.
dtkblueshockey: What are your thoughts on the Blues current roster? Do you think that the team will be competitive enough to make the playoffs or do you think that they should have added an additional player in the offseason to help defensive problems or scoring depth?
Jeremy Rutherford:
They need more offense. If it comes from this roster, great. But based on recent history, I think they need more scorers. They also need more depth. I've said before, if they have an injury to a skilled forward, there's little help in Peoria. If they lose a d-man to injury, there's no experienced help anywhere.
BMike88: JR, thanks for taking the questions. What's the biggest question mark heading into this season? Offense? Leadership?
Jeremy Rutherford: 1. Goal-scoring
2. Defensive depth
3. Leadership
steve: Can I laugh now that Montreal hasn't resigned Price?
Jeremy Rutherford: I believe it was TSN's Bob McKenzie who wrote recently that Montreal and Price are working on a deal.
Justin: coming in to this season I knew that they were either going to keep Weaver or Colaiacovo do you feel that they made the right decision, because Weaver was playing so well last season and he was great on the penalty kill
Jeremy Rutherford: Weaver and Colaiacovo are two different players. The Blues need someone like each of them - a player who can move the puck and a steady stay-at-home guy who's good on the PK. If they only brought Weaver back, they would be in serious need of an offensive-minded guy. While Weaver might provide a little more, I think Colaiacovo was probably more valuable because the Blues have several stay-at-home guys.
Jason M: Who has a brighter future in the organization: Pieterangelo or Cole? Also do you see our minor league system as one of the top in the league or are we (Blues fans) overhyping the Blues' prospects?
Keep up the good work JR! Do you need an assistant this year to help with your Blues coverage??????
Jeremy Rutherford:
I guess I'm riding the fence, but I think Pietrangelo and Cole are pretty even at this point. They both do different things, but both could be really good.
Regarding your second question, most of the Blues' prospects are on the current roster. According to several scouts around the league, the Blues have one of the best crops of young players in the league. But it's not the minor-league system. The Blues don't have a lot waiting in the wings in Peoria. The prospects who aren't in St. Louis (Tarasenko, Schwartz, etc.) are playing elsewhere.
I could use four or five assistants. But unfortunately I can't afford any, so I'd probably have to do your laundry or something.
Section 305: JR,
Is there any reason to believe that Boyes will be able to regain his finishing touch this season? Perhaps a better question, has he been doing anything in particular this offseason to try to improve scoring? His problems seemed to me at least to be mostly upstairs, and I would think two months on a tropical island where he could just clear his head and forget all about 09-10 would have been the best medicine.
Let's Go Blues!
Jeremy Rutherford:
You're right. It's all confidence with Boyes. When I talked to him a few weeks ago, he said he has to believe that he can be the goalscorer that he was in the past. It'll be important for him to get off to a good start.
John: JR,
Suggestion for a topic article. How about an in-depth interview with the Blues Assistant Coaches? Did they and the HC spend lots of time together reviewing film of the last few months when he took over? Have they made some changes to what they want to do this year? Especially with the change/turnover of players, will the Blues play a similar up-tempo style? I would venture they have a good idea of what they want to do on the ice this year...
Thanks~
Jeremy Rutherford: Thanks for the idea. Do you want to be my assistant this year?
djm448: How did you end up spending that iTunes gift card last week?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I bought some hip-hop. Like I said, I like all kinds of music and I did listen to some of the suggestions from the chat. But I was looking for some uptempo stuff I could listen to on the cardio machines at the gym. I love rock-n-roll, but it doesn't get the juices flowing at the gym ... at least for me. Thanks for the ideas.
Rick: There was a discussion about Washington being interested in one of our vet. defensemen...If you had to guess, who would that defensemen be?
Jeremy Rutherford:
Every time Washington is rumored to be looking for a defenseman, Jackman's name pops up. I've heard that the Caps like Jackman and could use a physical presence. I've never heard from anyone within the Blues that they've shopped Jackman to Washington, but I know the Blues have guaged the league's interest in their veteran defensemen (Brewer, Jackman).
nublues: Thanks Jr for this column i always look forward to thursdays. Has checkets thought about allowing the fans themselves to invest in the team. Something similar to how greenbay is owned by the fans. Im sure there are a ton of fans willing to buy shares or invest some money. Add it up you may have a pretty good chunk of the team owned by the fans and ran by dave checkets.
Jeremy Rutherford:
I haven't brought that up, but I'm sure he reads the chat, so now you brought it up ...
Doug R.: JR,
It was reported after the Halak deal that there was an immediate uptick in season-ticket sales in the days that followed. Have you heard any rumblings about season-ticket sales since then? Does the front office expect an increase or decrease in season-ticket holders from last season's totals?
-Thanks!
Jeremy Rutherford:
I have not. It's something, though, that I've been meaning to check into. Please ask the question next week and I hope I'll have an answer.
mblues40: Hello JR,
I was wondering what your take on Bishop's future is. Will he be a permanent fixture in Peoria with Allen coming right behind him or will he see time in Stl?
Jeremy Rutherford: This will be a big year for Bishop. It would be great for him if he could outplay Jake Allen. I know they don't look at it like they're competing against each other, but Bishop needs to show that he's spent some time in Peoria already and he's better because of it.
Doug R.: JR,
You seem to be pretty high on your expectations for Oshie this coming season. Is that a reflection of him putting in a lot more time and effort this offseason, or do you just think that it's him naturally progressing from a young player to a veteran?
Jeremy Rutherford: He's just got "it." He knows how to play the game. He does the little things. And after a couple of seasons, he'll find out how to make those things work for him. There aren't too many players in the league with his attributes - skill and intangibles.
nublues: JR will you give me free tickets to the preseason game on sept 21st?
Jeremy Rutherford:
Yes, I'll leave them at Scottrade. Call 314-622-BLUE, give them your credit card and they're all yours.
they'reback: any reaction by you, the players, or coaches to perron bringing back his white skates?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I didn't ask any players about it yet, but it won't be pretty.
Hodo51: Hey JR, I have been barking up this tree all summer including a few of your Q&As...but wanted to bring it up. I personally think Brewer is an above average dman and could be even more given the right situation. To me the "right situation" is for every move he makes not to be boooo'd and scrutinized by the fans. With that being said, I think the fans will continue to use him as a punching bag since he has been the Captain of a losing team the past few years. In your opinion, do you think a C-less Brewer would be more effective? I personally do think he would be more effective and also think there are others better suited for the C. Im asking what you think, not what you think the Blues are thinking...thanks
Jeremy Rutherford:
I understand what you're saying, but I really don't think Eric Brewer is the type of guy/player who would be visibly better on the ice if he didn't have the C on. I really don't think the scrutiny bothers him that much. Yes, everybody wants to be well-liked, but knowing him, I don't think you'll get a better defenseman if you take the "C" off him.
BromanPolak: JR thanks as always for the chats. How short of a leash will guys like Patrik Berglund and Brad Boyes be on if they have slow starts this season. Will two down years diminish both of their trade values to a point where it won't be worth dealing them?
Jeremy Rutherford: Everybody needs a good starts, but Boyes and Berglund are two players who could really use one. You hate to say it, but yes, if they are both playing poorly halfway through the season, their trade value will take a hit. Several teams would still take a chance on Berglund because he's young and only been with one team, but his stock won't be as high unless he can bounce back.
Beachvu: What do you think will be the degree of "fallback" to the pack for Chicago this season?
Jeremy Rutherford:
I don't know how much the Blackhawks will drop back, but they're definitely a different team. How many guys have been jettisoned? With no Niemi, Byfuglien, etc., they'll be different looking. But they're core remains intact, and that's why I think they'll still be very tough to beat.
Jordan: Who leads the blues in scoring next year. Thanks for the chat!
Jeremy Rutherford:
Boyes
Jeremy Rutherford: Thanks everyone for the questions today. I'm working on getting a Blues exec (JD or Armstrong) to chat with us Thursday Sept. 16, the day before training camp starts. Hopefully that comes together. Have a good weekend.
