wakeupcall: Hello, Jeff!
I've heard a lot of reasons why Bradford has regressed this year: New system/OC ... no receivers ... lockout ... O line ...injuries ... But at what point does he have to "own" the situation and lead? How long before he takes that next step? How many TDs has he thrown this year? How many drives into the endzone? You say "he'll be fine." But I'm starting to have serious doubts about him. I mean, how many rookie QBs have more TDs and better records?
If Kronke won't fire Spags now, what's keeping him from canning Devaney? Why wait? Getting a new GM in now would allow for some objective coaching and player evaluation, plus it would allow for post-Spags planning and it might help in getting a new HC. It might send a signal to fans that Stan is listening and maybe save some of the fanbase, too. Who is there replace BD?
Jeff Gordon: I'm eager to see Bradford play with two good legs against the back side of that Rams schedule, after he gets some practice time with Brandon Lloyd. Then we'll see if he can build on his last two games (52 for 81, 583 yards) and get the team into the end zone. Losing Salas will hurt the cause, just as losing his top target Danny Amendola. If the Rams can protect him, he'll rack up numbers. If the Rams let him take a physical beating, then, sure, he could regress just as every other young QB regresses when exposed to ritual punishment.
The pool of NFL head coaching and managerial candidates is much, much better after the season. Fans want in-season firings to satisfy their bloodlust, but such change in midseason is less common in the NFL than other sports. How Kroenke views this is anybody's guess because he prefers not to comment.
RamFan in R.C.: Hi Jeff: With all the penalties, bad tackling, etc, the Rams seem to do on a weekly basis, were there any concerns during training camp that this would be a problem during the regular season ? did the coaching staff not pick up on this ? Also,do you think Kroneke is going to make a change no matter what the team does the rest of the way, especially after yesterday's loss, that he has seen enough ? Thanks for taking my question Jeff !
Jeff Gordon: The Rams were fine in the preseason. Then the real games started and the real trouble began. Everybody from management down to bottom-tier players share responsibility for the first eight games. We've seen quite a bit of player change already. What yardsticks Kroenke uses to measure the season are anybody's guess. But Sunday's loss is the sort of defeat that typically dooms a teetering regime.
Piggy Pigglestein: Gordo:
Any reason why the entire coaching staff wasn't fired immediately following the debacle yesterday? And is it possible to trade Jackson or Bradford, not for players or draft picks, but for advice on how to be an NFL organization? How much worse does this thing have to get before heads start to roll?
Jeff Gordon: The trade deadline has passed, so fans insisting that Jackson and Bradford depart will have to wait until after the season to resume that call.
Piggy Pigglestein: What does it say about the fact that the Blues are willing to fire Davis Payne so short into the season, and yet with the NFL season half over, the Rams are content to keep the same coaches that have overseen this laugher of a season? If they won't fire the coaches, why not forefit the rest of their games? Maybe that would shake somebody up.
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Kroenke forfeiting the rest of the games, since several of them are winnable.
DBQIA: If the Rams draft in a top 5 position what will it do to their cap space with so many high paid draft picks already on board.
Jeff Gordon: Many Rams are on one-year deals. And many Rams will exit. Also, this was the year that Bradford killed the cap. Also, the new CBA has made rookie salaries a virtual non-issue with the cap.
Andrew Sampson: So with Ken Hitchcock replacing Davis Payne, can luring Mike Modano, Brett Hull, and Sergei Zubov out of retirement be coming this week? In all seriousness, the coach coming in has been fired with three other teams; wouldn't this mean there will be an expiration date with Ken Hitchcock? And what of the assistant coaches that run the power play so poorly yet have survived three head coaches; when will they be held accountable?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, there is an expiration date on Hitchcock. NHL coaches seldom get more than a few seasons and a taskmasters like Hitchcock can wear people out. This move was made to win now. He has the veterans on the roster to help him make that happen. Halak's play is a far greater concern than the power play, BTW. The Blues will start getting a few bounces with the man advantage as their schedule shifts toward a heavy home slate, but that won't matter if Halak keeps bleeding goals.
Mike: Certainly the Blues need more discipline. Isn't Hitchcock a bit much the other way?
Jeff Gordon: No.
Rob: Gordo I don't think I can take the lack of Rams offense anymore. This team should have scored 30 points against the Cards. With a beast of a RB like SJ39 this should open up the passing game. Why are the TEs not part of the game plan? Do you think this is the right offense for Bradford to be running? Why don't we run the "no huddle" more often?
Somethings got to give. The Defense is finally playing up to expectations but our Offense is a joke. Does McDaniels get the axe after the season with the rest of the staff?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have trouble lining up and getting off the snap counts in a regular offensive scheme, so the no-huddle is a real chore for them. Kendricks caught an early pass, then suffered a foot injury. It would have been interesting to see him become a bigger piece of the offensive puzzle in that game. As for Josh McD, he, like everybody else at Rams Park, is not operating with a lifetime contract. The 1-7 sticks to everybody.
virginiatom: So much is focused on the poor results of this coaching staff, but many of the successful organizations have a good football person as a GM who is actually making the major decisions that impact personnel. Any thought that Stan would bring in a GM, and if so, what names are out there that could be in play?
Jeff Gordon: Lot's of high-powered former NFL guys doing TV right now. Take your pick.
ihtnep: Hi Jeff,
At this point, does Spagnuolo seem any different from Linehan at the end in terms of cluelessness and being in over his head?
Jeff Gordon: He is trending horribly wrong, just as Linehan did. The Rams' schedule gave Steve a chance to stage a second-half rally, but Sunday's blown opportunity diminished that possibility.
ihtnep: For those of us that are very, very unhappy about Mizzou to the SEC,
whose picture belongs on our dartboards?
Jeff Gordon: Many culprits. It's sad the Big 12 imploded. Maybe a stronger commissioner could have kept Texas and Oklahoma in line. Maybe a conference TV network and better TV deals would have kept the group together. So many things went wrong. Missouri got out, but the athletic program as it stands today will be fodder for the SEC powers. I don't understand why some folks are so giddy.
Terry L Brown: Jeff,
What are the insiders saying about Ryne Sandberg? Why has he not been given a chance to manage in the majors? It is not like the Cubs have made the best baseball decisions in the past 100 years. He has won at the minor league level. I like the fact that the Cardinals will at least take a look at him.
Jeff Gordon: Any time a superstar like Sandberg becomes a manager, it's tough for him to go to his old franchise in that capacity. Fans worship him. That standing provides some leverage. Yet managers are classic "at will" employees hired to be fired. I'm guessing this management team, like the previous one, didn't want Sandberg's celebrity to be a complicating factor. In a place like St. Louis, that celebrity issue is minimal.
MTN: Jeff,
Throughout this depressing Ram’s season I’ve felt that should Stan decide to make changes in GM and/or coaching he should wait until after the final game. However, after Sunday’s debacle, I think Stan has nothing to lose by making changes in-season. The Devaney/Spagnola era is a complete failure. They’ve been given ample time to turn things around, but things have gotten worse. Clearly things are not working on many levels for this team. The fan base is eroding. A message needs to be sent to both the players and the fans. I understand that finding a new coach may take many weeks... So why not fire Spags now and appoint an interim coach (McDaniels?)and make it clear that player evaluation for next year is in full swing. Keep Devaney through the season and then decide on his future. This would give Stan a head start on finding a permanent replacement for Spags or Devaney, and the fans a glimmer of hope that better times await. Given the current situation, I can think of few negatives to such actions. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks,
MTN
Jeff Gordon: What would installing Josh McDaniels as interim coach accomplish? To this point he has been a complete failure. It's not like this team has a logical interim coach like Jim Haslett or even a Joe Vitt to install.
ihtnep: I sense more and more support for the 99 blue and yellows on a permanent basis. How much noise and to whom do we have to make the noise to get our way?
Jeff Gordon: Keeping yelling. I can't imagine the NFL going back.
Terry L Brown: Jeff,
Do you think the Pujols camp will wait to see what Prince Fielder is able to get before they make their move?
Jeff Gordon: That's quite possible. Once Fielder is gone, there isn't anybody like Albert on the market. That should only enhance his position.
ihtnep: Remember when the Rams were something like 20-2 if Faulk ran for more than 100? I don't know their record when Jackson tops 100, but I'm sure it ain't pretty.
Jeff Gordon: It's a shame to waste that sort of production. They day will come when 130-yard rushing days will be hard to come by. Guys like Jackson are very hard to find, regardless of what many fans think.
ihtnep: Wouldn't it be awesome if Mizzou played in a conference with schools in states that border Missouri, like say Kansas, and they could develop rivalries over decades with such schools, have a patsy for homecoming like say, Iowa State, and also play against top schools in the region like say, Nebraska, K-state, Oklahoma, maybe even Oklahoma State? That would make for a challenging schedule, and some exciting football.
Jeff Gordon: But those days are gone. And playing out East in the SEC will making hard to develop new rivalries.
Rick Seithel: Jeff,
Here's my take on TLR retirement. He will be offered some type of executive position with the White Sox or Reds. When the current manager goes south, he will take over seeking the number of wins to become the 2nd all time major league baseball manager leader. If not, why don't the Cardinals offer him a front office position?
Rick(Kansas City)
Jeff Gordon: The White Sox are the logical destination. Here, DeWitt makes the major baseball decisions and Mozeliak is a great fit for him. There would be nothing for La Russa to do, especially since he disagrees with some of DeWitt's thinking. Reinsdorf loves the guy and figures to hire him. If TLR wants to manage again, then, sure, he could go work for Cincinnati. Walt Jocketty can't go much longer with Baker after this season's disaster.
DBQIA: Magically Bradford appeared yesterday as the quarterback of the 49ers having had the time to get to know the system and the rest of the team. He had two good legs and had the skill that he usually has, not rusty from two weeks of layoff. What kind of day did he have?
Jeff Gordon: Put a healthy Bradford in a good situation and he would flourish. As he was, his production in his last two games -- on either side of his high ankle sprain -- improved markedly from the previous weeks.
Tackleberry: Gordo,
As the Rams inch towards another Top 5 draft pick, is it fair to assume that Deveaney will not be the one making that selection? Truthfully, whether Spags stays or not, I'd love to hear a compelling argument for why Kroenke retains Devaney.
Jeff Gordon: As the losses mount, the probability for change increases. Otherwise the Rams won't sell any tickets next season and that would not make Stan happy.
Tackleberry: Gordo,
This is probably a very irresponsible question, but would the Cards pursue a scenario where their starting 8 players were the same guys on the field at the end of Game 7? Could they trade Holliday in an effort to free up money for Pujols and go after a top of the line shortstop? Maybe a sign-and-trade with the Mets for Reyes?
Jeff Gordon: Reyes has an extensive injury history. The odds of him remaining an elite base stealer deep into his contract appear unlikely. There is a very high risk with Reyes. Maybe he would earn his giant money . . . or maybe he would become one of the all-time free agent busts. Fans want to dump Holliday, but a career .315 hitters are hard to find. Also, trading after a down year, marred by injuries, is an especially bad idea. The guy played hurt for two months and had a great NLCS despite suffering from multiple injuries. Berkman could retire in a year and he and Pujols are both into the twilight. Matt offers offensive stability.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: Thanks for the chat. For whatever reasons, the Blues play was inconsistent, underachieving and Payne took one for the team. I thought this team lacked toughness and discipline, something Hitchcock will demand. How much freedom does Hitch have with players who don't buy into his system, as some surely won't? Is this what Armstrong warned about with his remark about two way contracts? What about the assistant coaches as Hitchcock will certainly want his own men. Initial reports stated that the assistants are expected to stay on but I don't buy into that one, as they may have been part of the problem.
Jeff Gordon: Changing assistant coaches in midseason is tricky for a number of reasons, including the fact that many potential candidates are working elsewhere. Once the transition occurs, we could change on the assistant coaching staff as well. As for the Blues overall, they weren't THAT far off where they needed to be. With decent goaltending by Halak, the Blues would be well over .500 despite playing a rough early schedule. If Halak doesn't play better for Hitchcock -- and if the Blues can't replace him with a elite netminder -- then the .500 play will continue.
Tackleberry: Gordo,
As a waning Rams fan, certainly not a PR guru, it would nice to hear SOMETHING from Kroenke this week. Even a quote that says something like "recent events have caused me to accelerate my time table for assessing this team's performance and that of the leadership." Silent Stan will hear his silence echoed soon, except it will be coming from inside the Dome.
Jeff Gordon: Fans will vote with their feet and I'm guessing that Stan will consider the vote count.
oskeewowow: The winds seem to be blowing in Mike Matheny's direction. Is he the right guy?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting possibility, especially with a Dave Duncan on board as pitching coach and, say, Chris Maloney on the staff to help with the Xs and Os. Mike has strong leadership ability. The fact he didn't manage in the minors works against him, since there is so much to running a game. Catchers are like managers on the field, but it's still not the same.
rodney81: hey gordo ,will mark clayton play this season for the rams and do you think if rams go 9-7 or 8-8 will that save coach job.
Jeff Gordon: Give the demise of Salas, the Rams need to activate Clayton and hope he stays on the field. 9-7 should save Spags' job, but the odds of the Rams winning out at this point are ridiculous.
wakeupcall: Hey, Jeff!
You've stated that Kroenke seems to want to lay low, evaluate, and prepare to make changes at the end of the season, but I don't see how he can wait any longer without doing something. If it's team "culture of losing" that's the problem, why wait? I don't know of any business model that suggests waiting for 3 or 4 months while the product gets destroyed and devalued. Why doesn't Kroenke make a move now and salvage what's left of the fan-base? What value is there in continuity when "staying the course" is a disaster?
Can't something be done to replace Devaney now, start evaluations, draw up a draft board, and, in a few weeks, replace Spags BEFORE the coaching lottery starts? (St. Louis can't be at the top of anyone's list, so why wait for left-overs?) Can't Stan set up some sort of "Star Chamber" - no names needed - to start the process now? I don't see how Kroenke can keep quiet and do nothing any longer while the fan-base deserts en-mass.
Jeff Gordon: Fans will either believe in the direction of the franchise for 2012 an beyond or they won't. That will either fuel ticket sales or kill ticket sales. This team is 14-58 since 2006, so it's not like a few additional months of struggle will shock and outrage fans.
ducksoup: Hey Gordo I wonder if bernie have some special intrest in the hiring of the next cardinal manager. I for one would like to see oquendo get the job,and if duncan don;t like it he can go with tony. Boston ex manager have to much bagget with him. Oquendo knows the team and knows what players need to stay or go.And I don;t believe he is alberts buddy, like bernie seems to feel.
Jeff Gordon: Jose is a strong candidate for the job, but hardly a shoo-in. Managing this franchise is no ordinary challenge. DeWitt wants a dynamic leader. That desire will drive his decision making.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: Last week the Rams played and beat one of the best teams in football. This week they played one of the worse and inexplicably lost, displaying ineptitude by their special teams that is simply hard to understand. Something bad always seems to happen to this team, but you make your own luck. Spags and Billy have been dealt some bad cards, with the injuries and all, but yesterday's loss was all about their inability to take advantage of what was given them. Bradford simply was not ready to play. Play calling was atrocious, predictable and coupled with bad coaching decisions doomed this team. A running play on fourth and one with ten defenders in the box, when a field goal would have been huge? What will it take to change the losing mentality at Rams Park and how long will fans have to wait before Stan does something? This team is better than what we saw yesterday. Can/will they beat anybody? Thanks for letting me rant.
Jeff Gordon: Well, they beat the Saints. So, yes, they'll win again this year. It's hard to imagine them winning enough to head off a regime change, however.
Tone-Dog: Jeff: Please clarify the contract status of Ryan Theriot for 2012. Thank you.
Jeff Gordon: He is arbitration eligible for 2012. Cards can turn him loose, negotiate a new deal or pursue arbitration with him.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
Have you been offered the Orioles General Manager job and if so, when do you plan on turning it down?
Jeff Gordon: Not offered. Would turn it down.
scubado: Gordo - It's a shame there's nothing to discuss these days. A couple of random Questions:
- Not sure I like the Hitchcock hiring. His approach has worn thin wherever he goes. However, I guess the Blues need something. I think Hitchcock will drive the youngsters crazy. Do you think Oshie will be a Blue at the end of the season? I'm not saying losing TJ is a bad thing (I think he's over-hyped).
- I think Spags is a dead man walking. I like Spags and think he's a decent guy. However, the Rams are horrible. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the Rams are horrible. No, he isn't likely to survive at this point. As for Hitchcock, he should provide a quick spot. Long-term is not the Blues issue; the near term is their concern. Gotta win now, for a host of reasons.
Britt Miller: Gordo,
Why aren't I included more in short yardage and goal line situations?
Jeff Gordon: Using the FB is not a bad idea when the team blocks the quick hitter -- and when the FB doesn't take a false start penalty while overeager.
wakeupcall: Jeff -
I'm starting to have serious doubts about Bradford. He doesn't seem to lead or project a sense of urgency in games. Bulger revisited? His passes are often far short or way overthrown. Bulger again? He holds the ball too long. Bulger? He doesn't seem to read defenses well or be able to make adjustments. Bulger? He fixates and stares down on one receiver. And he can't seem to put the ball in the end-zone. Every QB plays hurt. Every QB gets sacked. Every QB got locked out. You say he'll "be fine." I want to know when that will be?
I want to see some drive out of him! I want to see him grab a facemask and get in somebody's face! I want to see confidence and drive - the will to win! I don't see it right now, and I'm not sure I saw it last year, either.Last year seemed to be about "building his confidence," but since when does an elite QB - which he's paid to be - need that? Maybe he'll be fine, but WHEN?
I saw more will and drive out of Skelton yesterday. The lockout doesn't seem to have hurt Newton or several others, so why does he get a pass? Even Gabbert has more TDs than Bradford! Tebow, too! Maybe he just can't make the transition to the NFL. Maybe he's too used to playing on a team that just runs over everyone and isn't able to scrap and claw his team to wins because he never had to do it before. And those are things that can't be fixed by systems or better blocking or longer camps. Maybe not a bust yet, but not what was advertised, either.
I'm not ready to jump on the Luck bandwagon, but Bradford is getting shaky as the "face of the franchise." Just wondering.
Jeff Gordon: Bulger made a couple of Pro Bowls and threw for almost 23,000 yards, so he wasn't a disgrace. But he did get pummeled and that did cause his play to erode.
We'll see if Tebow and Gabbert have better rookie seasons than Bradford had last year. Maybe they will, but I'm skeptical. Newton is another matter.
Bradford was dramatically better the last two games, before and after the ankle sprain. Now that he can practice again, I'm eager to see if he can develop some chemistry with Lloyd. Losing Amendola and Salas to season-ending injuries doesn't make things easier.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: How can this team continue with all the false starts? I thought Alex Baron was long gone. The lack of concentration is appalling. When will we see DX and Clayton?
Jeff Gordon: Given the demise of Salas, Clayton and DX could emerge as big factors if they can get healthy.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: Given that the Rams have suffered an extreme number of injuries, how much of lack of winning can be laid on that facet of the game? It seems to me that this team has self destructed and underachieved regardless of injuries. How much of the questionable play we are seeing is on the coaches?
Jeff Gordon: Injuries are no excuse for 1-7. They have been a factor, but not the full explanation.
East coast Ramfan: I think the Arizona game was a test and Spags failed. He plays not to lose and I would have rested Bradford another week. Especially since the Cards was going with thier back-up QB. I think Bradford deserves better coaching and of course, a better O-line. My question is, why is the owner so silent? Not a word out of him for weeks now. I want to see Spags fired but I would settle for Kroenke saying something about this team. What is his mindset now? Is he angry, disappointed and has he said anything to Spags?
Jeff Gordon: Stan's style is what it is. That's not changing. That is how he has operated from Day 1 in sports.
kjoe: Spagnuolo had a basic choice of two quarterbacks to select to start against the cardinals. One of them led the rams to their only victory this season, against the mighty saints. He took most of the reps with the team in practice this week. to the limit of his abilities, he was prepared to do his best, and inspire confidence.
the other quarterback had a brace on his ankle. He did not have a lot of preparation. There was a very good chance that he would be healthier and reasonably well prepared to resume his duties next Sunday. He remains valuable to the future of the franchise.
My word to characterize the decision to start him yesterday is "stupid". What word, or words would you choose?
Jeff Gordon: I would have given Sam another week off, for his long-term benefit, but Bradford IS the better quarterback. And he threw the ball around pretty well Sunday. He's not the reason why the Rams lost. Fans are in love with A.J. because he won a game, but he also failed dramatically against a not-so-dominant Cowboys team.
RedC: Gordo,
I agree the Rams should have won yesterday and it is disturbing that they didn't, but come on, Arizona is not that bad of a team as many fans would have you believe. They lost some close games to really good teams such as Baltimore, Pittsburg and NY Giants. Arizona is not that far removed from a Super Bowl appearance and mostly lacks a good QB. Their defense has some dynamic players, including Peterson, Dockett, Campbell and the LB Washington and is actually quite good. And Arizona was at home - it is difficult to win on the road in the NFL. To me the offense is the culprit and it is a combination of overall being really young and learning a new system. There is talent but the offense just hasn't gelled yet. Due to circumstances I think they are a year away. I know I'm in a minority but to me it's not Spagnuolo and I hope he gets another year.
Jeff Gordon: You make good points, but the Rams are finding ways to lose. When it gets to that stage, it's hard for a coach to survive. Last week's game provided a possible turning point, but the staff failed to take advantage.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: Thanks for the chat. What is it going to take for this team to score TD's, particularly in the red zone? It seems to me that this Rams team is too predictable and that other teams know what we are going to do before we do it. I thought McDaniels had an imaginative offense. Where is it?
Jeff Gordon: Josh McD has the Rams throwing the ball downfield a lot more than they did last year. But they have to pass block to make that work. Poor execution has undermined this team, not predictability.
nevadariverranch: Hello Jeff, I'm a little burned out for all this losing. all this talk about suck for luck is bs. Bradford has had what 1/2 a practice with a legit #1 receiver since he has been on this team? I think he deserves a little more respect and time then that.
Jeff Gordon: He does, but some fans demand that A.J. take the helm and Bradford move on a draft pick deal.
Peter: Gordo... Why doesn't or didn't Josh McDanials call screen plays using Steven Jackson.. and is the use of letting QB Sam Bradford call out the protection slowing down and interrupting the rhythm of the Rams offense?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have run a lot of screen passes this season. They have also executed some of them badly. The failure to block and the nagging false-start issue are bigger issues for the offense than which players calls out the protection schemes.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: I thought Bradford's long passing game was just not up to snuff and with his bad wheels, the Cardinals didn't have to do much to defend roll outs. Lloyd schooled Peterson on most of the long routes but Bradfords inaccuracy was costly. Given Feeley's performance last week, why didn't he get this start? Kudo's to Bradford for giving it a go, but wouldn't Feeley, who apparently took most of the starters reps all week, been a better option?
Jeff Gordon: A.J. isn't much of a deep passer, as he demonstrated during his two starts. He had success last week in a quick-hit passing game. So fans demanding his ascension to No. 1 is baffling.
imadino: Hi Jeff,
I watched the Cincinnati game last week where there was a "Tuck Rule" call made, same as I last remember happening with Tom Brady in 2002, I think it was. This has to be the dumbest rule in football as it basically seems to say if a quarterback fumbles the ball or loses control of the ball all by himself, then we'll call it an incomplete pass, or something. Can you explain this rule?
Jeff Gordon: Here is a pretty good story on the tuck rule.
http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/11/mike-pereira-no-longer-supports-tuck-rule/?ref=football
nevadariverranch: Jeff, enough is enough, Spags is 9-31 while Linehan went 11-25 before he was fired. Now while I know turnover is bad in the coaching ranks, clearly this isn't working. I don't want anyone touting injurys, because every team loses players all the time. These stupid penaltys, giving up 300 yards rushing, making backups or players with zero experience look like hall of fame players IE: Torry Smith is really getting old. Please tell me Spags is gone at the end of the year.
Jeff Gordon: It is hard to imagine him surviving.
Peter: Gordo.. What do you think of Josh McDanials... and of his situational play calling... and why did Bill Billacheck "really" let him go... hummm?!! Thanks..
Jeff Gordon: Josh left to be a head coach, as did several Belichick aides. Almost every coach lets coordinators leave for head coaching opportunities. As for the Rams, poor execution is the problem, not the play calling.
imadino: Hi Jeff,
I thought before the Rams game that it was a mistake to play Bradford and I still think it was. He was not prepared for the game, did not have enough practice, and I believe was limited by his injury. It would, in my opinion, have been much better to play Feely. I think the Rams would have won that game if they had. That's not to say Bradford's play is solely responsible for the loss. But I do think that the continuity of the offense was lost from the previous week.
Jeff Gordon: For all of Sam's limitations, he played pretty well, despite some major breakdowns in pass protection. Although I would have sat Bradford to protect his long-term interests, he could have the led to victory with better blocking and/or more of a quick-hit passing scheme. That is how A.J. was able to win one game with a so-so performance.
nevadariverranch: Jeff, just for laughs, rank your preference of head coaches for the Rams next year out of these coaches. Cower, Gruden, Fisher, Martz, and Rob Ryan.
Jeff Gordon: Cowher won't coach, so he's dead last. I'd probably take Fisher, then Gruden, then Ryan, then Martz.
CuriousGeorge: Gordo: Thanks for the chat. From a lot of perspectives and hindsight being 20/20, to say that yesterday's game was not a good game for Spag's and company is gross understatement. Yesterday's game was there for the taking but was lost due to poor coaching and play calling decisions. While I like Spag's, it seems that he is in over his head. Linehan II. Is it time for Stan to pull the plug and get an experienced coach? If not why not? How much more does he need to see? Installing a new coach now would give the new coach time to learn the players and assistants, and certainly couldn't hurt the Rams record. This team is going nowhere and fans deserve better.
Jeff Gordon: A lot of potential coaching candidates are employed elsewhere. Guys available today either got fired on their last gig or they got tired of coaching.
Peter: Gordo.. Is Bradford ok... should he have waited another week sense he didn't practice all week.. was that Spags call..even thou they won with Feely's hot hand the week before...or because of the money invested in Sam the number 1 pick and $50,000,000 to $60,000,000..
Jeff Gordon: A.J's "hot hand" produced 175 yards passing and 4.7 yards per attempt. Apparently I am the only man alive who viewed that performance with a shrug. Sam got the call because these coaches -- like most human beings -- believe he is the better QB. The fact he held up well enough to scramble out of trouble and make what should have been a critical completion on the final possession regulation play suggests he was physically able to play.
nevadariverranch: Jeff, you state the Rams need a person to run the total football operations, a person with a vision. Color me stupid, because I thought Billy Devaney had that type of job. I guess he doesn't qualify huh? While your at it, please give several names you would like hired here for that position so I can start checking out that type of role for the Rams.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams need a strong president of football operations, a guy that everybody reports to -- head coach, cap guy, scouting director, personnel guy, everybody. Kroenke is pals with Carl Peterson, but I'm not sure that is the route to go. Maybe some of the guys who don't want to coach, like Cowher, would like this sort of role instead.
Encino: "Good teams find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose." How true, how true, as yesterday's Rams game proved. Are you still among the optimists who think the Rams will win 3-5 games this season?
Jeff Gordon: Two to four more wins? Doable. A week ago fans were insisting there were no winnable games, then the Rams beat the Saints. This is the NFL. Such things happen each week. Ask the Chiefs.
rlogue06: Any ideas on where Payne might end up?
Jeff Gordon: He'll have to rebuild his career in the minors or at the major junior level. Bright guy, very good career arc. For all the talk of how badly this team underachieved with him, this team would have a nice won-loss record if Halak hadn't tanked so badly.
Lee in St. Louis: Jeff,
Are the Cards going to interview Francona for the manager's position? If not, can we hope that they interview someone with previous success and experience? It seems they need someone in that role with a measure of star power even if Mo and DeWitt cannot control them like a puppet.
Thanks,
Lee
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt owns the team so people do what he says or they move on. Ask Walt Jocketty. His previous success and experience didn't mean much when he moved on after disagreeing with the owner on major issues. The next manager will do things DeWitt's way or move on as well.
Lee in St. Louis: Jeff,
Is it likely that these players will return?
Furcal?
Dotel?
Punto?
If Albert moves on do you think the Cards might take a flier on adding another bat like Grady Sizemore or Carlos Beltran? Sizemore would be like adding Berkman last season...lightning in a bottle.
Thanks,
Lee in St. Louis
Jeff Gordon: Sizemore is an interesting guy. He'll have to sign an incentives deal somewhere, given that gruesome medical history. But I wouldn't rule out a successful comeback for him. Beltran's injury makes him unattractive here, since the Cards can put Allen Craig in right field for minimum wage and perhaps get better results.
Punto for the same sort of money he made this year makes sense, give his "plus" defense at three spots plus switch-hitting. Great utility guy.
Dotel likely moves on as a free agent unless his money comes down and/or the Cards opt to move some young arms in a bigger deal. No spot for him today.
Furcal is a definite maybe. If Albert leaves, the team might spend more at SS. But Rafael has options, so Mozeliak might opt to keep him to cover himself at a key spot rather than address the issue after Albert's decision.
nevadariverranch: Jeff, if you could point to just one thing that is the biggest reason for all the losing coaching wise, what would it be.
Jeff Gordon: Execution. Blocking, tackling, getting off the line on the snap count. Millions of little things, none of them getting done well enough. Team just isn't crisp.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
So what were the hug-worthy moral victories the Rams took from yesterday's fiasco? And didn't that horrid performance completely nullify the win against the Saints?
Jeff Gordon: The Saints game was a turning point only if the team built on it. That didn't happen, so it stands as an isolated incident.
nevadariverranch: Jeff, too bad about Greg Salas, He was starting to be a real productive player. I hope he will be ok. Whats going on with Mark Clayton? Being Salas is gone for the season, will Clayton take his roster spot?
Jeff Gordon: That would be the plan, assuming Clayton is healthy.
Bud: Hey Jeff I would like your insight to the next manager for the Cardinals. I read our options and for the life of me I can't get excited. I can't get into the idea of an ExCub managing the Cards. I don't like what happened in Boston that caused Tito's exit. I'm thinking Oquendo or Matheny but not sold on either. I need your opinion. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The ex-Cub thing is a non-issue. Fans get worked up about it for no good reason. I like the fact Sandberg was a great player who wanted to manage badly enough to spend years in the minors honing his craft. That sold me.
The negatives with Francona outweigh the positives for me; he let his players slough off. He would have a lot to prove, in my mind. Matheny is a natural leader, so I can see the appeal there. Jose is capable, but I'm afraid his quiet nature will cause him to get overlooked. We shall see.
northern ram: Gordo,
So because Feeley happened to be the one handing off to SJ against the Saints in the win fans want him to start over Sam?!! Two weeks ago he was leading the Rams to a 34-7 loss to Dallas - Its funny how fans live week to week. Remember when Keith Null was the saviour?? Until he played and got creamed that is!
Biggest need for Rams - dt, wr or cb??? I think wr can be ok if Lloyd stays and Salas can recover.
Jeff Gordon: I'd CB is the biggest need for next year, from that group -- assuming that Lloyd stays and Clayton excels and stays. Salas and Pettis have shown well, despite the fact fans wanted both of them cut.
Red Bird: Jeff,
Which happens first?
Pujols signs a contract
Rams fire Spags
Kansas fans stop pouting
Jeff Gordon: Pujols signs.
rich: Jeff: A pitiful display of football again put on by the Rams Sunday afternoon. No need to rehash anything as we all saw what happened. My comment/question is when will some of these players and coaches including the head coach be held accountable? My fear is that a few more years of this type of loser football will translate into blackouts on T.V and into smaller season ticket holders and smaller crowds at the dome which we give the ownership an easy reason to relocate after 2014. Your thoughts?
Rich
Jeff Gordon: This won't drag on for years without significant change.
Red Bird: If Pujols stays, Wainwright is 100%, Carp is still Carp, Freeze is healthy all season, the Cardinals keep Furcal or sign someone better, Miller arrives, Mott dominates, Francona signs up and Garcia grows up . . .
Do you like the Cards chances of winning World Serious Title #12 in 2012?
Jeff Gordon: I like their chances to contend again, regardless of which managerial candidate gets the call. Health is always the X-factor, but the organizational depth protects the team.
Red Bird: People are saying that Tony LaRussa has revolutionized playoff baseball!
I expect he's thrilled to hear this.
The traditional ideal is to start the playoffs with 2 or 3 top-notch starters and ride them hard and long. But LaRussa just proved you can win with weak starters (Carpenter excepted) if you start with a very deep pen?
This tactic fails in the regular season because the bullpen wears out, but with days off for travel, this years Cardinal run to the World Series proved LaRussa's innovative use of the bullpen can work in the playoffs.
Do you think this years' WS was the beginning of a new brand of playoff baseball featuring 5 or 6 pitching changes almost every game, or do you think 2011 was a fluke?
Jeff Gordon: The playoffs always feature a lot of pitching changes. The Rangers had a supposedly deep rotation and they kept the door revolving in some of the games. But exceptional bullpen depth is a huge advantage come playoff time. It can help a team fake its way through short series.
JR1: Jeff, we know that coach Spagnuolo built his staff out of old friends. A first time OC and DC. He also put his college roommate in an assistant position. Mr. Karraker called his staff abysmal last night on TV. These "coaches" haven't been able to coach up the talent to an acceptable level. In fact the OL and D line have definitely regressed. I think Spag's has the ability to be a good head coach with some experienced assistants to help. Do you think he will be given an ultimatum from Mr. Kroenke to hire capable assistants ? Or will he be fired and the search for a new coach begin at the end of this debacle of a season? Or will Kroenke fire him during the season? Thanks for your input.
Jeff Gordon: Stan will make his call soon enough. This staff isn't getting it done. The team is finding ways to lose. Spags did it his way, so there will be so saving him unless the team stages a second half rally for the ages.
JR1: Does Devaney have any chance of being here to draft next April? I hate to see anyone lose their job , but he hasn't been able to evaluate talent. Thanks for your reply.
Jeff Gordon: The top guys from this draft have all shown well. Quinn is coming on, Salas was playing great when he broke his leg, Pettis showed well when he got a chance yesterday and Kendricks is a beast. Too bad he, too, got hurt. But when a team loses almost every game, change is inevitable. Everybody at Rams Park has had a hand in this.
jeffinutah: Gordo: Your thoughts please. You play the "devils advocate" role during the game, I can see the value in that. Here are my thoughts thinking about the Rams future.
1)Bradford: I am a Bradford Believer AND Basher. He makes some good plays, then he loses poise under pressure. I think its the pressure of coming in as a Messiah. Garbage games may be good for him, he needs to get some games with less pressure. We need to get a stupid lead big enough for him to relax and grow.
2)McDaniels: He has done a good job, execution is our problem. Our offense is so less predicatable, we are running Sjax more now from a spread formation and shotgun. This has been suggested for years and not utilized enough. If we could STOP the stupid penalties. If we could STOP the missed blocking assignments (Bajema yday), we would be in a better place today.
3) Justin King: Has killed us all year. We played well without him last week. When teams struggle against us, they look for #21 and attack. Cards didn't do it much, but when they did, they were succesful. Doesn't M. Johnson deserve to play more after the N.O. game?
4) Salas injury upsetting. He was really coming on.
Jeff Gordon: Not sure what Johnson did in his one game other than the fact he wasn't Justin King. The real story has been Josh Gordy's play at CB, Al Harris' contribution late in his career and Stewart's evolution.
Kurt Begle: Gordo, Does Colby Rasmus get a 2011 World Series Ring since he was at one
time on the Cards 2011 roster? And, if so, who else falls into this catigory?
Jeff Gordon: The Cardinals will decide which individuals get rings. Rasmus is eligible, as are guys like Ryan Franklin, Brian Tallet, Miguel Batista, Trever Miller, Bryan Augenstein, Mark Hamilton and Raul Valdes.
Michael: Greetings, Jeff!
We might as well make it a trifecta with the major St. Louis teams seeking new leadership in the coaching/managerial ranks...Do you think Spags and his staff are long for this season? Holy Cow--something needs to be done!
Thanks,
Michael
Jeff Gordon: Again, tough to predict with Stan. His track record as a full NFL owner is almost non-existent.
mightymike105: Good Monday Gordo,
Well it was good while it lasted. Yes THOSE RAMS are back. As I sat there and watched this sad display yesterday I had uneasy feelings. Missed chance after missed chance to put away a team that was almost begging them caught up with them. I'm still baffled at how they let that one get away. That was the 1st and only game that I know of that a team got 2 safeties and still lost. Gordo the 4 pillars are dead. It's simply a formality. The Rams and Spags had to have this one. I once had the highest of hopes for Spags. I still think he's a good coach but just a lousy head couch. BD may be a good football man but he's failed as the GM. Records don't lie. Well they will be moving on soon I just wonder what moves Stan will make.
Jeff Gordon: Again, my proposal is hire a strong football guy to oversee the whole Rams Park operation and let that guy made the recommendations of where to go next.
hp: Gordo, do Mizzou or Rams know what a gameplan really is???? Mizzou D looks awful, from week to week, and Rams "O" is so boring. Whatever they decide to do seems to go the other way. Penalties continue every week, things we learned in high school. What do you hear from your peers about this continued non-performance???
Jeff Gordon: The Rams keep losing. Hear a lot about that. The Mizzou defense has had good stretches, but not enough complete games to beat top competition week after week. That is a disappointment, since the MU defense was supposed to be pretty good this year.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
Is there a rift or tension between McDaniels and Spagnuolo? The TV camera shot to the two of them on the sidelines before the 4th and 1 play in the 4th quarter and you could clearly see McDaniels saying "I know that" in a very animated way.
Also what was the thinking of running the exact same sweep play on 3rd and 4th down there and why try to go outside when Jackson is more effective between the tackles?
Jeff Gordon: Arizona had stacked the middle of the line very well on some short-yardage situations. But, yes, it was odd to see them do something similar on back-to-back plays.
mightymike105: Jeff,
It may only be a wish with little chance of ever coming true but I wish Pinkel would take a long hard look at his staff and make the needed upgrades. I do not see how we can do well in the SEC with what we have now.
Week after week I see the same stuff. At times I just wonder what goes thru Yost's mind. Henry Josey had over 100 yards rushing at halftime yet he's not a big part of the 2nd half. The other team throws screens to their speedy WRs. We throw over and over to our really good but less than elusive TE. A backwards pass for a fumble? Has he been talking with the Rams OC? No screens to the backs. Few quick slants. Imagine what this offense would be like if it had an OC that truly knew how to use it's pieces. So much wasted talent.
The defense. Oh brother. They are giving up what nearly 600 yards per game in Big 12 play? How is any team expected to overcome a defense this bad. There is talent there. But week after week I see the same poor fundamentals. Also I hate this passive defense that provides the other teams with few looks other than a basic cover 2 designed to keep the play in front. But somehow it fails at even this. It may just be wishful thinking but I just don't think this staff has what takes right now.
Jeff Gordon: And the challenge only gets greater. Some Missouri fans are in for a big shock.
mightymike105: Gordo,
What an interesting Sunday. As the Rams are letting me down the Blues are making an unexpected move. I actually like the new hire. Hitchcock does not mess around. So if I was those guys in that locker room I'd be ready as another mad Mike used to say "Embrace Change".
Jeff Gordon: The pressure is clearly on the players, especially Halak. His poor performance doomed Payne. Hard to win when the expected No. 1 goaltender blows up.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
What was the reasoning of rushing Bradford out there after only one day of practice and with a ankle that was still bothering him?
I'm not a Feely supporter but he did do a good job of managing the Saints game
Jeff Gordon: A.J. did a great job managing the Saints game. But if the Rams block for Brown's last field goal try, the Rams win and some folks praise Bradford for gutting out the game with an injury. I would have sat him for his own sake, but he actually did a lot of good things in the game.
mightymike105: Jeff,
I don't know which way the Redbirds will go but if they decide to go with a fresh face who's never ran the entire show, I would not be against it. There are some really interesting names on their list. Personally I'd like a Cardinal to get the shot.
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt has some feeling about that, too, which is why so many internal candidates are getting a look.
Mandy: with Cole being called up, that makes 9 D. Have you heard what is happening on defense?
Jeff Gordon: I assume Chorney and Nikitin get time in Peoria once Huskins is healthy.
rams fan since 1969: Hello how you doing today.Again another day thats hard to be a Rams fan.Against the Saints they for once kept the mistakes to a min.But against the Cards the mind numbing football follie highlight reel mistakes cropped up again we are what we are,a bad team.As bad teams figure out how to lose like good teams figure out how to win.It seems that most the decisions this organization makes whether its players or on the field it ends up being wrong.A lot of things have added up to a big failure.Could not believe they went for it on 4th down, against conventional wisdom and it them backfired. Then they got a 2nd chance and cant even block for a game winning FG.The longer a bad team plays the bad plays will soon crop up.Well 8 more games and most likely this regime will be gone.I know its still early, but who do you think could be on our short list for a Proven GM and HC.That was one of the most painful losses yesterday us Rams fans have seen, dont want to say it but being realistic there are more to come.Just think 8 more to go.I dont think this regime stays at 5-11 if they can even get to 5 wins regardless of injuries.Sincerely Rams fan since 1969
Jeff Gordon: Hard to predict what Stan will do. One guy he will listen to is long-time Chiefs executive Carl Peterson.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
I know you keep saying that if the Cardinals won't pay Pujols, then they won't pay Prince Fielder, but I think the bigger obstacle than money is that there are too many BBQ joints in St. Louis and Prince might be tempted to abandon his vegetarian lifestyle and lose that Adonis body that he has worked so hard on for the past few years?
Jeff Gordon: Price could help his market value by embracing a more fit lifestyle. I'm curious to see if that costs him money this year. It didn't hurt Sabathia at all.
tncardsfan: Judging by the reports I've read about what the Cards are looking for in their next manager: strong leadership, a working knowledge of the Cardinal system, ability to work well with upper management...doesn't this describe Mike Matheny perfectly? Would he be your frontrunner at the moment?
Jeff Gordon: I preferred Sandberg, given his vast managerial experience in the minors. But I can see why the Cards might want to go in-house with this one.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
Do you see the trade market being a little busier this offseason in MLB just because of the lack of starpower available in free agency (outside of Albert and Prince)- especially in the pitching department?
Jeff Gordon: That's a good point. It falls off in a hurry for position players and pitchers. Trouble is, fewer teams are inclined to dump useful players these days to save money. The bigger shared revenue gives more teams more ability to keep guys.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
Still possible to see Alabama/LSU facing off in the BCS Championship game? If so, how slim are those chances?
Jeff Gordon: There would have to be a lot carnage elsewhere. Nobody is eager to see that rematch, from the entertainment perspective.
smitty: If we don't give oquendo the job, what is keeping Jose in st. louis any longer?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, it would be hard for him to stick around after getting passed over. That is the hard part about the decision making.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
Mizzou moving to the SEC, good move?
Jeff Gordon: I understand it, but I don't see how Missouri flourishes in that conference. Mizzou fans should look at Ole Miss and wonder if that is going to happen to their program.
mightymike105: Gordo,
Deep down I wish MU could have stayed in the Big 12 and that it could've been a place of togetherness like the Big 10, PAC and our new home. But I understand the reasons why we hit the road. Now that the move is official and many got what they wanted, I hope that people open up their checkbooks. Been doing a little research and Jeff you are being kind when you point out the long way we must go to get even up to average SEC standards. Yesterday was confetti but now the reality of the hard work begins.
Jeff Gordon: Agree totally. SEC is a whole different world. Those boosters LIVE for their teams. It consumes them. Can TigerFan match up?
rich: Jeff; We've all seen the non-success the Rams have had w/rookie head coaches. Why would it be any different if the Cards decide to go that route?
Jeff Gordon: Two different sports, two different organizations. Many NFL teams have hired coaches without head coaching experience and done very well. The Rams got a NFC title out of Martz before he cracked up. If the Cards go that route, the organization will rely on its overall strength to put the person in a position to succeed.
Jim Hency: Hi Gordo, I don't see why anyone would be against a managerial candidate because he was once a Cub. I would like to see Ryan Sandberg get the job. He played the game with integrity and knows the game very well. Now wouldn't that frost the Cubs fans to rob another Cubbie from them and we go to the World Series under him. lol
Jeff Gordon: That would might finally push some of those people over the edge, especially if Theo and Co. don't pick a start for the North Side.
berno615: Gordo -taking shots at fans who didn't think adding Salas and pettis in the draft really is a little much.Don't know any fans who say cut Salas and pettis, what they said at the time was they are just a couple of guys who could be similar to lots of other nfl receivers .Most fans who disagreed with the rams offseason strategy ,unlike the writers who seemed happy with the offesason moves, said once again we didn't get a no.1 receiver and they were available. The rams could have signed a fa or traded for jones .Certainly te and slot receivers were available to replace Kendricks Salas and pettis. You keep saying Kendricks is a beast what has he done this season to make anyone think he is going to be a star which a second round pick should be?
Jeff Gordon: Salas and Pettis got crushed during my assorted live chats for being useless. Fans gave up on them before they had a chance to show. Sounds like you're ready to do the same with Kendricks. The kid has thrown some massive blocks and some memorable YAC plays. The drops were part of the growing pains. Just needs steady work and he'll be fine.
The Nard: Herr gordon, for 2012, it appears Cards only have room for 2 utility-type players, out of 4. Which do you think will be retained:
Schu vs. Theriot;
Punto vs. Descalso.
Jeff Gordon: Descalso is not going anywhere. I could see him and Punto sticking around, given their "plus" defense and versatility.
CuriousGeorge: Jeff: You are Stan. Would you fire Spag's now or at the end of the season? If not, why not?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see a great interim coaching candidate on this staff. I don't see anybody doing such a great job that the switch makes sense. And, again, the potential coaching pool after the season is much, much larger than during the season.
UtahCardsFan: Any chance either Pujols or Cards' management sets a deadline? It seems like every potential move now is prefaced by "If AP stays" or "if AP goes."
Jeff Gordon: Cards can wait it out. The Carpenter and Berkman extensions assured that. The only big unresolved issue is shortstop. That decision could be tied somewhat to Albert if Furcal is able to command a lot of money elsewhere.
rich: If the Cards do hire a rookie mgr, don't you think that sometime during the season we're see this rookie mgr on the phone in the dugout and then another shot from Mo's suite upstairs and 1 can only guess that Mo is telling the mgr over the phone during a game, how to run it?! That si one of my biggest fears!
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak does have managerial aspirations. His hands are pretty full at it is. It's unlikely that he will phone instructions to the manager in mid-game.
hot ice: Hi Jeff! I know that players like Rasmus, Miller, etc. get a share of the WS money, but do they also get WS rings? I sure hope not! Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Again, the team determines which players get rings. Some teams have been very generous with their rings. So we'll see what the Cards do.
dylan1015: Hi Jeff - Not sure if you addressed this yet, but I feel the Cardinals will sign Pujols, which is a good thing, but I'm afraid they will go more than 4 or 5 years, which is a major mistake. The man is a huge presence in the line up but I continually see him limping around the bases. Worried that health won't be there in 5 years unless he starts taking steroids (B. Bonds, etc). I'd pay him 28 million per year, he's earned that. What would you offer him in years and price? thanks
Jeff Gordon: A longer contract doesn't both me -- or the Cards, for that matter -- because Albert will quit playing once his performance goes way south.
Dan: Any ideas on what happened to the Mizzou defense this year? Franklin has been inconsistent, but that was to be somewhat expected. The defense lost Aldon Smith, but picked up Sheldon Richardson who isn't having a major impact like some had guessed. Still, their front seven appeared to be pretty strong coming into the year but they have been average at best.
Jeff Gordon: No idea. Again, the group has had some inspirational stretches, but it also got lit up. Baylor blew away the Mizzou D with its speed. When Baylor has better athletes, it's time to check your operation and reconsider some things,
MTN: Jeff,
You wake up tomorrow and discover you are owner of the Rams -- horror of horrors!!! If your team continues to lose, would you fire Spags at some point during the season or ride things out to the bitter end before making any decisions?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Again, I'd hire a heavy hitter at the top of the organization and ask him to develop a plan of attack. Every aspect of the operation deserves scrutiny.
Dan: What's up with Hitchcock shaving off the mustache? I thought him and JD would have a great race for the worst 'stache! In seriousness, I think Payne was a solid coach and never "lost" his players, but whatever his schemes were did not work. Was the Xs-and-Os part of of his skill set not as polished as it could be? Too bad Hitchcock missed Sydor by a year!
Jeff Gordon: Hitchcock noted that he would change the systems. He will try to elevate the team's commitment to the systems ASAP. Job One is inspiring Halak, who almost single-handedly tanked Payne with his poor start.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
Any word on Kendrick's MRI results? And I read that Bradford is back in a boot. Did he reinjure the ankle or is that just precautionary?
Jeff Gordon: Spags speaks in a few minutes. Check back later on STLToday for the full medical update.
Kevin: If the Cards hire a guy like Matheny, do you see guys like Duncan and Petini teaching him the role throughout the season?
Jeff Gordon: Duncan for sure. Perhaps Memphis manager Chris Maloney could have a role, too.
MTN: Jeff,
I am amazed that there are still so many S. Jackson haters out there. The guy has been amazing especially when one considers the bad teams he has had to play with over the years. Not only are his stats impressive but he has grown into a great leader. But, I fear that all the years spent in St. Louis will doom him when Hall of Fame time comes around? Does he have a chance if he puts up similar #s for the next couple of years?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: A lot of great running backs out there. Being sentenced to terrible teams won't help his case. He will need to become an historic figure in statistical terms to have any chance at all.
stlfan5: Why do we not hear anything from the Rams owner? Is he in hiding, or are you guys afraid to ask him for an interview? It would be nice to hear something from him.
Jeff Gordon: Stan doesn't do interviews. He's a very nice guy, very easy to talk to -- when he decided to talk. Mostly he avoids the media and declines comment. Jim Thomas of our staff regularly calls his people, to no avail.
ChicagoCardsFan: Gordo:
Thanks for the weekly chats. Phil Rogers of the Chicago Trib was recently on the radio up here in the Windy City and predicted Albert will leave the Cards and that someone will pay him at least $35M per year. Now, Phil also predicted the Cards would lose every single playoff series, so we hope his prediction track record continues. I realize its the (multi)million dollar question, and it only takes one insane owner to overpay for a free agent, but what does your gut tell you on the size and length of the contract Albert eventually signs? Will $170M over 6 years get it done?
Jeff Gordon: I'd be surprised if the Cards went into the high 20s in salary. Certainly $35 million is a comical figure for a player's twilight years. I could see the Cards going to something like $210 million over nine years with some long term bells and whistles.
nevadariverranch: Jeff, my internet connection skipped, you mean Spags skipped a 51 yard fg try with time under 2 minutes left? If so he needs fired Today!
Jeff Gordon: He passed on that, but it became a moot point when the Rams had a 42-yarder to win the game a few moments. They couldn't block for Brown and they lost the game.
That looks like all the questions for today. See you next time!
