nextdayair: Gordo,
I appreciate your continued insightfulness. You continue to provide information that is both informative and entertaining.
With that being said, I was disappointed with the content of your article regarding a potential trade involving Jake Peavy of the Padres. I realize he provides quality pitching. I also believe K. Greene would be a nice fit with the Cardinals.
1) After the bad experiences the Cardinals have had with pitchers and the short career spans (which you have indicated when you reference injuries, like Mark Mulder), how could you sell the franchise by taking a chance on a currently 'hot' pitcher by dealing the future in Colby Rasmus?
2) In my opinion, Rasmus and Wainwright are keepers. Period. If I was Colby Rasmus, I might want this trade because right now, I'm not feeling appreciated. I realize it's a business, but if there are people that have me out of town before I arrive, what good is that?
3) If there is really a trade to be made, look at Ryan Ludwick. Here is a guy with a break out season, an All-Star year after many 'average' years. Isn't this a time to move a player, when their stock is at its highest? And get some quality pitching in return? I like Ludwick, but it's a business, right?
4) Also, could you help me with this? There are 2 more teams in the American League than the National League. Wouldn't it be an easy fix to move the Milwaukee Brewers, who were an American League team, back to the AL Central and move the Kansas City Royals to the AL West, where there are currently only four teams?
5) Additionally, would the Blues take on the moniker of the "Baby Blues"? (maybe they already have) With so many young players, it looks like a good marketing strategy. I would enjoy seeing their success widespread; there are many fans like myself who have waited a long time for this.
6) Finally, any movement on the Jericho Scott signing?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Has Scott turned 10 yet? If so, perhaps it's time to each the Little League flamethrower how to throw a splitter. (Just kidding).
The Peavy case is interesting. San Diego wants a blue-chip pitching prospect to plug into the rotation right away. The only Cardinal who fits that category is Kyle McClellan, since the Padres aren't getting Wainwright.
San Diego would want another top prospect, like a Rasmus, plus an impact young player. The suggested Braves deal would include either Johnson or Escobar, but the Cards would have to offer an outfielder instead.
Would the Cards do all that for Peavy and take on that huge deal? Probably not, given the money already going to Carpenter and the uncertainly surrounding Carpenter's future. But it's fun to talk about and a deal really could be there.
Ludwick ought to have limited trade value, for the reasons you mention. Any GM could have had him for zilch two years ago. Don't expect any of them to pay a premium for him after his one big year.
As for the Royals, I said at the time that they made more sense for the NL that the Brewers. But Selig wanted his team to be in the NL and the Royals clung to their "rivalry" with AL teams, none of them close by.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
Your colleague Derrick Goold gives a good case on why the Cards don't have what the Padres need to land Jake Peavy. However, one of the readers who responded brought up an interesting proposition ... what about a three-way trade?
OK, let me see if I can get you to wear your thinking cap and tell us who you think could be potential third parties in a three-way trade with the Padres. That team would have to have what the Padres want (i.e., young starting pitching) and need what the Cards have to offer (i.e., Bryan Anderson, Colby Rasmus/other outfielder, David Freese/Allen Craig, right-handed reliever).
Or, what about a different three-way trade to address the Cards' other needs (i.e., left-handed bullpen help, middle infielder with pop). In that scenario, the Cards would be be shipping to a team needing pieces of the aforemetioned Redbird package while that team sends a package to a third team that, in turn, sends the Cards left-handed relief help and an impact-bat middle infielder.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
Jeff Gordon: It's fun to construct such deals, but they are hard to pull off. Give Ned Colletti credit for engineering the elaborate Manny Ramirez deal under duress, but he had already done much groundwork on the Pirates before that occurred.
The Cards do have a lot of trade assets, thanks to the rapid rise of Freese and Wallace (creating the 3B surplus), the development of Perez and Motte in the bullpen, the surge by Jones in the outfield and the fast climb by Todd. So the Cards an assemble a nice package including everything BUT a kid like Hanson in the Braves organization.
9elbirdos: Gordo,
Since Cano signed that huge contract. Would it not be better to trade for Brian Roberts or sign Orlando Hudson? What would it take player wise to get Roberts? what would it take money wise to get Hudson? Which of the 2 would be better suited for the Cardinal's?
Jeff Gordon: The D-Backs seem certain to let Hudson go, since he made $6.25 million and will want a pay bump AND multiple years. He could at least ask for four years and $30 million, as a .282 career hitter. Robert is a pure leadoff guy with decent pop, so the O's could ask for a lot -- starting outfielder, young pitcher and another prospect. Given the Cards OF surplus, turning one of those guys into an infielder would make all the sense in the world.
Tim: Why are the Cards doing another wait and see on Carpinter? I look at it like this. The Cards dont get Peavy they dont have Carpinter ready for the start of the season then you reallly have only Wainwright you can depend on in your rotation not to rip on Lohse and Wellemeyer but do you think they will be able to repeat what they did last year. Last year was really the only season where they both were effective in their carrer. Then you have piniero who was spotty at best. And who knows if Carpinter will ever regain his old form, they guy has been injured 2 years and has hardly pitched. I really dont get why you would not pull the trigger and trade a prospect(Rasmus) who had a subpar AAA season last year for a 27 year old cy young ace. To me thats just plain stupid. With the past track record of the Cards can we really buy the fact that the Cards are going to be aggresive this offseason and make substantial moves to this team or do we have another frusturating season where dewitt puts his wallet in a steel vault surrounded by navy seals and we scrape the bottom of the bucket for players AGAIN?
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus alone doesn't get that deal done. And the Cards may not have the pitching needed to make that deal. As for DeWitt, the Cards will spend in excess of $100 million on their payroll again next season, one way or another. There are a lot of ways to get there. Trading for Peavy is just one of them.
Mozeliak traded for Glaus last winter, which is hardly scraping the bucket. Signing Lohse was a solid move as well. Expect more of the same this winter.
Ran: Two Questions and One comment.
Question1: I read fans comment weekly how Bulger is scared and needs to be replaced. What is your take on this? I feel he's better than most QB's, although his paycheck should warrant a top performance.
Question2: Whether or not you believe Marc should be replaced, is there really any chance he would be?
He has such a large contract that I can't ever see that happening ( I for one really like Bulger and think fans are just nut-jobs)
Comment:
Since the Post gives out grades on the players and coaches. I'm giving a grade of "D" to the Post Sports staff when compared to the "A" that I give the Boston sports staff. StlToday gives a couple of stories and that's it. I got more coverage, info, interviews, video and quotes (from Rams players) from this one page than I did the entire StlToday staff.
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/
C'mon StlToday, Man-Up and give us starving fans some real sports coverage. Right now you're being like the Scott Linehan of Sports Coverage. Please Gordo, be the Hasslet of the sports staff and demand change.
Jeff Gordon: After the game, we gave fans a chance to comment on a live game blog, I responded to 17 pages of comments and questions after the game, I wrote a quick recap column, Jim Thomas wrote a game story and a notebook, Burwell wrote a column, Coats wrote a couple of stories and blogged a report card, the site offered a slideshow and audio recap . . . it's not Boston.com, but it's better than a lot of newspaper web sites do with a road game.
Bulger's contract won't keep in the starting job if he's not up to it. He wasn't as good as he needed to be in this game, but his last three gaems overall have been a marked improvement from his first three starts.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
Based on Hall's less than stellar performance in the return game do you see Staley getting a shot as either the punt and/or kick returner this week?
Hall made some clutch catches yesterday, but he just wasn't getting it done in the return game.
Thanks for the chats.
Jeff Gordon: He had an explosive kickoff return negated by a penalty - so, no, he shouldn't lose that job to Stanley. He looked like his old self on that first kickoff and he never looked better as a receiver.
NAZRamFan: Gordo,
I'm assuming that if Mike Singletary does well enough the rest of the season for the Niners to want to retain him as head coach, they have met the provisions of the Rooney Rule and do not have to interview any other minority candidates. Correct?
Jeff Gordon: Well, yes.
matt w: Jeff
Fancy if you will for a minute please, I think a 7-9 to 8-8 season is my prediction for a season. That puts in that 10-17 range in the draft all the more likely. Do you see the rams finally taken a linbacker My preference is James Laurinaitis in the first. In the second do a PR move but also making personel sense judgement by taken Chase Daniel or Chase Coffman in the second. My questions though all this are as follows.
1. Do you think James Laurinaitis is available in that 10-17 pick range
2. Would Chase Daniel warrent a 2 round pick as he his right now.
3. If Chase is picked would be in a good situation to learn from Trent Green and Bulger and learn until Bulgers contract runs out and take over.
4. Same question as 2 with Coffman and also would you see him as a instant production guy.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: That linebacker could go higher than the 10 to 17 range, based on some of the early draft projections. Coffman is at least a second-round pick, if not higher. He would be an instant impact pick. His stock is climbing. Daniel's stock . . . not so much. He is likely a second-day guy, given his size and lack of drop-back experience. He still must prove he can gun the ball into the small windows of NFL defenses.
Rick R: I know that the Rams are playing better but don't you really think like I do that Arizona will be hard to beat because they can score points. The Rams still seem to struggle in that area and they will have to score a lot with Arizona's offense even in the dome?
Jeff Gordon: I like the Gridbirds to win this game, with Warner going nuts. The Rams will need a healthy Little, a healthy Carriker and a healthy Jackson to have a real chance to win this game and get back in the playoff race.
DisCard: If the Cards are fortunate enough (which I doubt) to get Fuentes, he would close. Don't they still need a situational lefty for earlier in the game? Also doesn't getting a closer have to be the top personnel priority considering how many games the offense was good enough in to hand the bullpen the lead.
Secondly, why is everyone considering trading Ankiel? It seems to me he may yet take it to another level and though he lost some years, he's still young enough to be an impact player for a long time. I know you have to give value to get value, but I haven't heard any returning names as of yet worth a player of his current performance, let alone his potential.
Jeff Gordon: Ankiel is a year removed from free agency. Rasmus is a similar player -- better defensively, better on the basepaths, not as much power -- who years away from free agency. He is like having a free everyday outfielder. Hence the trade speculation. Maybe Ankiel will be a star, maybe he will just be a good player -- it's tough to define his future value (and price).
Here, Fuentes would either close or split the job with Perez. So, yes, the team will keep prowling for another lefty for earlier in the game.
redbirdswin: I find it hard to believe that the Dodgers will be able to retain both Manny and Rafael Furcal. That said, what other team(s) besides the Cards will make a run at Furcal, or have the money to do so? Do you think the Cards will make him an offer at all?
Jeff Gordon: The Royals have lots of money to spend on Furcal. So do the Blue Jays. Look for both those teams to make a big play. Manny's best option is to stay in LA; it's up to Boras to convince the owner to take that plunge.
Zac, Humboldt, TN: Gordo,
With Matt Holliday on the free agent market will the Cards try to go after him this time? I understand we have an outfield, but I think he would give us that spot behind Big Al. Plus we need pitching help in the closer role. He would be expensive, but what is K-Rod going to be asking for?
Jeff Gordon: Holliday has one more year in Colorado at $13.5 million. Then he will look for Pujols money -- which is why the Rockies might deal him. The Cards would be better off staying the course with the productive and less expensive OFs in house. They are loaded at that position all the way down to Springfield.
Spend the money elsewhere, like starting pitching, relief pitching and middle infield. K-Rod made $10 million this year and asked for $12.5 million in arbitration. That that $12.5 million (at least) and multiply it over four or five years. Then contemplate his risk of injury . . . and take a pass.
redbirdswin: Looks like Brett Wallace has slowed down a bit in the AFL. Last time I checked, he was 4 for 30, .133, HR, 3 RBI in 8 games. It's only a handful of games, I know - but do you see a reason for his current slump? Is the pitching that much better in the AFL? I thought AFL pitchers were mostly A/AA caliber, and Wallace was lighting those guys up in the minors this past season.
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't worry about Wallace. For a player to hit his way to Double-A in his draft year is amazing. I expect him to keep making adjustments and be ready for the majors by late next summer. But where would the Cards play him? That remains the big question for him. His ascension gives Mozeliak interesting trade options, starting now. David Freese is ahead of him, but where does he play for the Cards?
vianden: I read that Wallace is struggling in Arizona. Among the more obvious explanations are the long year he has played [college then full season ball] and the somewhat higher level in AZ winter play], but I wonder also if he is concentrating on improving some aspect or another of his hitting, e.g., hitting the ball the other way. What are your thoughts, please? Thank you.
Jeff Gordon: Wallace hit .337 in 202 minor league at bats this year -- after a huge collegiate season -- so I'm not concerned that a 0-for-6 game dropped him to 4-for-30 during the AFL. I'm sure he'll lock at Springfield next spring and continue his climb.
Stan: Jim,
Good effort by the Rams yesterday. However, the more I watch Bulger the more I feel like I am watching the second coming of Jim Everett.
Marc rushes throws when there is no pressure and when he is not throwing from his back foot, he throws flat footed. Can this be fixed or is he forever going to be a shell shocked QB? And if that's the case, should we start to look for his replacement in next years draft?
Jeff Gordon: It can take years to develop a QB, so the Rams will have to address the issue more expediently if Marc doesn't get back to his old Pro Bowl form. About half the time he was pretty good Sunday . . . and half the time he threw fadeaway passes.
HEG: Gordo the Rams game yesterday was very winable; it seems that Bulger is not the right QB for the Rams team; yesterday special team for the Rams was terrible; it seems the L.B.'s do nothing & Brown is so concerned with getting beat deep his coverage is terrible; in conclusion the Ram's missed a good chance yesterday.
Jeff Gordon: Brown was giving Moss room, which is understandable. He also picked off a pass and tipped another pass that got picked, so he came out ahead. The defense wasn't bad, given all the short fields it had to defend. The turnovers and the stops gave the offense a chance to win the game. The offense came up short.
Yes, Bulger needed to be sharper to win that game against that team in that stadium.
justin: What is your best guess on total sales of the cardinals in a year. Im talking tickets, food, beer, clothing, tv programing, etc...after taxes that they make. Just interested because after 3.4 million in ticket sales thats 136 million at 40 per ticket on average. Just wondering because everyone calls dewitt so cheap. could they justify not taking the payroll up to 120 or 130 million and still be comfortable?
Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: Don't forget that the ballclub is paying off the stadium, too. And the club has spent many millions more in player development, especially ib Latin America while playing catch-up. Those investments don't show up on the big league payroll.
But a payroll of $110 million to $115 million would doable in this market, given the fan support. The Cards will lose some revenue this season to the economy, but I wouldn't expect a huge falloff.
Sam Alton: Jeff- thanks for all the great hockey coverage. I wrote on Friday that my wife and I, season ticket holders, would not attend the game because of Sarah Palin. We ended up going anyway because our allegiance is to the players. We just boo'd, loudly, when Palin appeared. Of course, she drops the puck, the Blues lose soundly and Legace is injured on the rug laid out for the ceremony. Typical disaster related to the McCain campaign. What is the connection to Palin? Checketts? Davidson? And I'm curious as to your thoughts- why did the Blues have her drop the puck? Should they have? Players have any thoughts? Thanks and keep up the great hockey coverage!
Go Blues!
Jeff Gordon: The ownership obviously wants McCain to win. Missouri is a battleground state, so Palin got to make her appearance. The Legace mishap reminded us how cursed this franchise has been with weird injuries. Fortunately, it appears this injury isn't serious.
jerzeeram: Gordo,
Was Linehan best move as head coach to hire Haslett?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, he didn't make that call. It was made for him.
Griff21: As we burned through our top 4 goalies this week, it raises the question how do the rest of the goalies in the system line up on the depth chart. Lameroux (sp ? ) would have to be pretty close to next in line right?
Jeff Gordon: Chris Holt, who started over the weekend in Peoria, would be next up. The Rivermen had to sign local kid Brian Hamilton to serve as the emergency back-up.
Griff21: i agree we need more offense from middle infielders, but clearly our top priority still needs to be pitching. I don't trust pinero's numbers. and the rest of our staff is either unproven or lacks endurance as starters. So that leaves wainwright, loshe, & welle. looper might still be an option, but we need a lot more pitching
Jeff Gordon: Given Kinney's successful comeback and the progress of Perez and Motte, moving McClellan into the rotation mix could make sense, for the reasons you stated.
Hen: Gordo,
I hope that either you or your colleagues write about Bulgers "scared" play this week. He's been doing it all year. The Cowboys game he finally stepped into his throws with confidence. You have to think that the future opponents are thinking just hit him, you don't have to sack him and he'll get the scared play going. Your thoughts on that? It is a big deal as he is the weak link now especially at a position where we absolutely cannot have one.
Jeff Gordon: Opponents will see his fade-away passes and go all out to apply pressure. That is why the Rams have to run the ball well, as they did for a big chunk of Sunday's game, and then strike with play-action. Marc had been making strides, but the second half was regression.
Hen: Why do we have tightends? Why don't we just cut them and get two more tackles? They'll block better and they'll catch just as many balls.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are trying to bring Daniel Fells along on the fly. You'll see more from him as he leans the offense. Losing McMichael was huge and obviously Klopfenstein hasn't played his way into the game plan.
Tackleberry: I am wondering what the Rams' running game would look like with a "change-of-pace back with some speed as the #2? Yesterday it looked like the o-line had the holes open and the corners sealed but the backs weren't hitting them quick enough. Steven Jackson is by no means slow, but would it be worth exploring a more quick-burst runner in this offense, just to give defenses another look when Jackson needs a blow?
Jeff Gordon: Pittman was fine as the back-up, especially coming back from a broken leg. I'll take a 4.4 yards per carry on the road against the defending AFC champions.
Hen: Gordo,
Prediction: Rams' fans will grow continually tired of Bulger "whimpiness" this year and just like he did in N.O. Haslett will stick with him to the detriment of the team. He did that with Brooks.
You think Bulger can turn around his aggressiveness or that Haslett will bench him if needed?
Jeff Gordon: Haslett will do what he has to do. He stuck with Brooks too long in New Orleans -- and both he and the team paid the price for it. Having said that, Bulger has played at a Pro Bowl level before. Jim's challenge is to get him back to that level.
Mick N: If T. Holt did not play another game do you think he has the numbers to get into the Hall Of Fame? Also, what is your gut feeling on whether or not Holt will be with the Rams next season.
Jeff Gordon: No, Holt does not have Hall of Fame credentials yet. Too much competition. I can see Holt (along with Bennett and Hall) moving on with Avery and Burton starting next season and additional speed (Stanley and others) coming aboard. This team will have a lot of needs to fill.
mjdelpe: As always, I enjoy getting my insider info about the Cardinals from your chats, thanks for having them.
With all the recent hubbub generated from MO's latest "low hanging fruit" comment, I'm not concerned or bothered by it. I believe for 2009, only a couple of minor tweaks are needed to make the Cardinals contenders again. I would be plenty happy with the following 25 man roster. Given the following roster, where do you think they might end up in '09?
Outfield: LF-Ludwick, CF-Rasmus, RF-Ankiel - Bench: Schmaker & Mather
Infield: 1B Pujols, 2B - Lopez, SS -Renteria, 3B - Glaus Bench: Miles & whatever "low hanging fruit" we get for Kennedy, which I hope will be an infielder.
Catcher: Molina & LaRue
Starters: Carpenter, Wainwright, Wellemeyer, Lohse & Pinero
RH Relievers: Perez, Motte, Franklin, Springer, McClellan
LH Relievers: Affeldt & Johnson
If Carpenter can't go, re-sign Looper. If Johnson can't make it sign Joe Biemel.
A trade involving Kennedy and signing an Affeldt and/or Joe Biemel and Renteria would not qualify as "blockbuster" moves or break the bank, but would certainly "fill the holes" from last year. Should this roster stay healthy all year, I could see 95 wins. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: That is a pretty reasonable look. Mozeliak could still move an OF or two and construct a bigger deal for the right player, but he sent the message that he was willing to ride the development of players on hand -- especially young pitchers like McClellan. Perez, Motte, Mortensen and Todd.
Mark in NY: Hey Gordo! I was pretty upset with Bulger's play yesterday, and sent you a question asking how long Haslett would put up with his poor play. I understand Haslett is trying to get the QB to "lead" the team... and I understand that his stats are "OK"... and I also understand that Green did not play well either when he had his chance. But the offense looked much better under Green until the whole team caved later in the game. Maybe Marc just needs some time to recoup on the sidelines. However, my question today revolves around Torry Holt. Is "Big Game" finished? How can someone be so good one year and do nothing the next? He and Bulger used to be on the same page. Perhaps Bulger should look for him more often so they can both "snap out of the funk they're in". Your thoughts on both guys please?
Jeff Gordon: As I noted yesterday, Avery is starting to pull second defenders to his side. There should be more room for Holt to work. He'll have to do better than he did Sunday for this team to get back in the playoff hunt.
Francisco Prado: Gordo, greetings from Vegas. Do you see any chance that the Rams will retain Jim Haslett as pernament head coach after the season now that the league did not approve the contract propposal of the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: There is a 100 percent chance of Haslett staying as head coach if the team keeps playing like this. The league voided the contract, but the intent remains the same. The league can't change that.
marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. It seems obvious that the Cards need a SS and 2b. Do you see the team acquiring another legit starting pitcher before they break camp in the spring?
thanks
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will seek another veteran starter, yes. It could be a depth guy or something better, depending on how Carpenter comes along.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Of our minor league pitchers, who projects as a SERIOUS major league contributor in years to come (ala Wainwright)? I keep hearing about Mortensen, Todd and Herron, and I have seen the likes of Boggs and Garcia in the majors...but Mortensen walks a lot with low K's, Todd has great stats but there seems to be little confidence in him as more than a reliever and Herron did well until his promotion to Springfield (I understand it will take time!). Boggs appears to be our next Brad Thompson and Garcia may never be healthy enough to contribute.
Of Mortensen, Todd and Herron, who has the best "stuff"? Mental makeup? Raw ability? Who throws hardest and who is most accurate?
Jeff Gordon: Garcia is out for next year, but he is the most exciting guy long term. Elbow surgery for pitching prospects is like changing a tire these days. Shoulder issues are what you worry about. Garcia is still young and could become a stud. He pitched hurt up here this year.
McClellan might be the next to help the rotation, since Perez and Motte both broke through this summer. After that, Mortensen has the pitch selection but he needs more command. Todd has the command, but, as noted, he may be suited for middle relief. The Boggs/Thompson comparison seems apt. Like you said, it's early for Tyler. Ottavino struggled with command last season, but he has a chance.
KH: Hey Gordo,
Everyone seems to be flipping out over the Cards in 09. I actually think they are in a pretty good position to challenge for the NL Central title. The core players they have a are great and under contract for a while. Plus they have depth at certain places to trade from. My question is, which players are more likely to be traded? Is Ankiel a trade option since he is a FA after 09?
Thanks for the chat!
Jeff Gordon: At some point, something has to give in the outfield. Ankiel gets mentioned because of age, contract status and the fact another team might like his upside. But the guys with no apparent role on next year's team (Kennedy, the rehabbing Duncan, Barton, Stavinoha) don't have a lot of trade value.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
In light of Albert's recent awards (hopefully he pulls in the BIG ONE on Nov. 17), what type of extension (years and dollars) will it take to put Albert in a Cardinal uniform for the remainder of his career (this has to be one of 2 cases where no price is too high)?
Assuming they do give Albert a BIG deal, will they be able to maintain a competitive team (which will be paramount for him to stay anyway) with a $20-30 million deal on the books?
Jeff Gordon: As long as the Cards don't make a BIG MISTAKE with signings or trades during the next two seasons, there will be money for Albert if he wants to finish here.
Tackleberry: What would you say the chances are that Izzy is on the team next year?
Jeff Gordon: Very limited. Tony is loyal to him, but he doesn't control the budget. I'd be shocked if "Mo" offered him anything more than a tryout. Kinney's return and the arrival of Perez and Motte precludes him getting anywhere near the ninth inning here.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
As an out of market Rams fan, I have only been able to score check. But after seeing the highlights of the STL-NE game, it looks like this team has a little heart left.
Are the past few weeks a stroke of luck, or are the Rams actually playing good ball? It's possible that 9-7, 8-8 win this division. Any chance the Rams squeak in (like '04)?
And seriously, how good does Donnie Avery project to be? Any chance he can be another Holt?
Jeff Gordon: He's different from Holt. Burton could be more like Torry. Avery is a burner, a deep home-run threat -- one of the fastest guys in the league.
As for the overall picture, the Rams won two of three games from play-off caliber teams. Their second-half schedule will give them a chance to win some games.
Tackleberry: Would the Rams ever take a look at Daunte Culpepper? Not as a long-term solution but maybe bring him in to compete with Bulger? He'd get at least 8 games indoors (just like Minnesota) and he'd have some smore mobility in the pocket.
Jeff Gordon: Linehan had him, won with him and didn't want him back. The fact Daunte is out of the league must speak to what he has left.
Pete: Gordo,
What do you think is the likelihood that 2 years from now St. Louis will be able watch watch one of its own, Ben Bishop, as the Blues' number-one netminder? If he plays as I think he will in Peoria, I just don't see otherwise...
Thanks, and Go Blues!
Pete
Jeff Gordon: He has a real chance to be The Guy, as early as next season.
Dan: With Kurt Warner becoming a free agent next year, is there any chance the Rams may think about bringing him back? Is there any chance the Rams would interview Mike Singletary for their head coach opening?
Jeff Gordon: Barring a shocking negative turnaround, Haslett will be the head coach next season. Maybe Mike will reach the same point in San Francisco. As for Warner . . . if the Rams look for QB help, I bet they look for something much younger.
Secret Sauce: Who is more likely to be manning SS for the Cardinals in 2009: Kahil Greene, Izturis, or Renteria?
Jeff Gordon: No offense to Cesar, but it better not be him. The Rams need more than 20 to 30 RBI from that position. Greene would be an interesting project and he is in his athletic prime. Edgar may have one year left, but it would be cool to see him finish here. I'd take Edgar.
Andrew Sampson: OK
After seeing what happened to the Blues goalies on Friday and Saturday (Seeing Marek Schwarz puuting on his gear Saturday garnered some uh-ohs), the best news out of all that was that the next game in not until Oct. 30. But really, this is crazy! It's like a MASH unit. Aside from that, how long until do you think it will be before we see consistent goal scoring from forwards not named Keith Tchacuk and Brad Boyes?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues do need to get Stempniak going again. He had a fabulous preseason, then lost his touch while trying to come back from his knee injury. And Murray is having to crack the whip on Perron again.
james arnold: Jeff:
This questions deals with the (lack) of Jackson on sunday. I know the post writers almost made it taboo to even hint that jackson should play through the pain last sunday---but it appears to this fan, that jackson is really playing for himself not the team. all players have injuries or hurt-but they play. jackson's presence sunday could have the difference but he "couldn't go" and we lost a competitive game.---Why is it that he was given such a pass this week? by the beat writers and columninsts? in n.y. or philly or for almost any other nfl city, this would not have been done. is all of st. louis gone soft? are the post writers paid directly by the rams?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, I would rip the Rams for sending Jackson into this game with a quadriceps strain. The risk of re-injury is very high. This risk of losing him for several games is great. It is not a toughness issue at all. If this were a do-or-die playoff game, then we would all expect Steven to play.
D-Mac: Hey Gordo,
I know you are going to get this a lot today, but it should be addressed. Mark Bulger looked down right scared out there in the second half of the game. I saw him take a couple hard shots in the first half, in fact I thought a couple of theme could have been flagged for late hits, but the point is after he took them, he reverted back to "Skippy Feet Mark". I am sure he is a tough guy and all that, but really, I felt he lost all his will to play 100% in the second half. Do you think the bloom is off the rose again now that Haslett is going into his fourth week of coaching and Mark will again revert back to an also ran quarterback?
Jeff Gordon: This will be an interesting story to follow, especially with Warner aiming to come in here and throw the ball all over the place. This is a big, big week for Marc.
Larry: No penalties on the Patriots...or more specifically, no penalties CALLED on the Patriots....does Bellicheck have the zebras that intimidated or what?
Jeff Gordon: Well, there WAS a holding call, which the Rams declined since Long got a sack on the play. Does that make you feel better?
spriggster: Gordo,
If Bulger is cut, how much would be held against the Rams cap in 2009? Where do they stand (how much room) against the cap with Bulger's and Jackson's recent huge contracts. All that Bulger has done for the Rams doesn't go unappreciated but it does look like he has lost his ability to stay in the pocket and progression read. With that being said, I think the commments by J.C. Pearson yesterday were inaccuarte when he stated Bulger needed to step up. If you look at those plays, there was no room to step up as d-lineman were there. Also after watching the Giants/Steelers game, those quaterbacks had a very large pocket to step up into compared to what Bulger is getting. Rams still looked 200% better than 3 weeks ago.
Jeff Gordon: A quarterback cannot throw off fade-away. He just can't. Nor can he rush the throws out there before his receivers have a chance to turn. Marc was guilty on both counts on some plays. The Rams need to protect him better, but he needs to play more assertively to beat good teams.
deebox: Hey Jeff I had the oppotunity watch tyler greewn play, and believe that if the cardinals give him a chance he might surprise them. I think this young man is ready to break out. And instead of going out and signing a high price pitcher, why not give your best starter in the minors a chance. And consentrate on the bullpen, from the left hand side.
Jeff Gordon: Greene took a nice step this year, putting him in line to earn a utility job (ala Brendan Ryan) some time soon. He just has to build on '08 and really turn the corner.
Could McClellan help the rotation as much as most of the free agents? Maybe, but I would only make that switch if Springer came back to support the young righthanders and Kinney.
Aramis21: What is the status of Alex Pietrangelo? Since the Hollweg hit he has not played a game and news about his injury has been surprisingly sparse.
Jeff Gordon: The Blues can milk his "upper body" injury for a while to work him at this level and speed his development without burning any more of his nine-game trial. But I believe sending him back to junior hockey is the best move, especially since Woywitka cleared waivers and Junland is back playing again.
thecat46: Is there any interest in, J.J.Harday?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, Hardy is a nice player, but at what cost?
Franklin: What's the ceiling for Nick Stavinhoa?
Thanks!
Yours,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: Looks like a nice fourth or fifth outfielder. Some power, no speed, hits for average, not great defensively -- he could step into a role should the Cards get riddled with injuries again or if others are dealt.
Zuke: If the cards do make a move for peavy, what would be your top offer?
Jeff Gordon: Top offer: McClellan, Rasmus and Schumaker. That's a lot, probably too much for Mozeliak.
Zuke: Chances the blues make the playoffs?
Jeff Gordon: I'll give them about a 25 percent change, which is more than most people would give them.
Zuke: With OU and Texas likley finishing ahead of MU, do you think they can make a BCS Bowl?
Even if they beat Texas, Texas will still likely be ranked higher. I also don't see OU losing another game.
After all, the committee put KU in above Mizzou despite the fact Kansas losing to MU and was ranked lower.
Could it be possible that Mizzou can win the Big 12, but still not make it to a BCS?
Jeff Gordon: If the Tigers won out and somehow beat Texas or OU in the Big 12 title game, they would make a BCS Bowl -- over one of the four Big 12 South powers. SEC teams will keep beating each other up, which is key to this whole thing.
Zuke: What are the 3 most likely new players to be in a cards uniform next year?
What are the 3 most likely players not to be in a cards unifrom next year?
Jeff Gordon: Likely to be in Cards uniform: Internally, look for Rasmus, Mortensen and Todd.
Likely to leave: Duncan, Kennedy, Izzy.
pkd: Penalties usually even out wiether good calls or bad during a game, but not one accepted penalty against New England?? OJ's or Browns pick then late hit out of bounds, Bulger dumping the ball on a roll out then getting slammed to turf by Seymore, offensive holding on Vrabel on TD run with an offical right there.....very frustrating playing in New England, reminded me of the Super Bowl
Jeff Gordon: This is Bill Belichick's world. We just live in it.
Kevin Thouvenot: Gordo - Fast Forward to April 2009 - St Louis Blues in the playoff hunt?
Jeff Gordon: In the hunt? Definitely. I see them playing to the end. Their depth is proving out early on.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
Is there interest among the Cardinal front office in signing Jeremy Affeldt? This would be a nice first step toward LH bullpen help, and he could also emergency spot-start ala Brad Thompson if need be. What would he cost in a multi-year deal?
Jeff Gordon: I gotta think he would be right in the Cards' wheelhouse, as far as his price. He would be a handy guy, more valuable than last year's lefties. The team can't expect Tyler Johnson to come back -- although he very might make it back.
jake: After watching the Rams/Pats game yesterday it's apparent they have a lot of problems to fix. I know its not going to come overnight but how do we get past the Cards and their high powered offense next week if we cant score points on a banged up pats defense?
Jeff Gordon: New England applied tons of pressure, so that is the first thing to fix. Bulger must be sharper. The kick team can't get into field position holes as it did in this game. Conversely, the Rams better get after Warner -- because he will be jacked coming back here.
frankram1: Hey Gordo,
It seems as though this is turning out to be a good draft for the Rams, Long,Avery,Burton and Chamberlain all look like keepers and future long term starters(stars?). However it seems as though our O-line is still pretty weak, when do we start to see what Greco and Schuening can do. Wouldn't Incognito at center and Greco at guard be a combination worth exploring. It just seems as though the Rams are showing improvement in a lot of aspects except O-line, or am I incorrect.
Frank
Jeff Gordon: I'm not ready to write off Jacob Bell. Leckey is a favorite topic here, but at least his snaps have gotten better.
Tony G.: Hey Jim, What in the world was Dante Hall doing after the final kickoff with about 12 seconds left and a chance to do something on offense?
Jeff Gordon: As I noted yesterday, he looked like he was trying to dance around until everybody disappeared.
Bill: Hey Jeff, in a very important game, a game that could of instantaneously put the Rams back on the map, baby Bulger lays an egg, and the Rams miss out on a big opportunity to earn what they should have received, and that was a victory yesterday. Bulger single handedly drained the life out of the Rams in the 4th Qtr. 65 million dollar quarterbacks are suppose to go and get W's, not L's. The Rams aren't going to play stout Defense every week and carry him. What's going to happen next week if we don't get to Kurt and put pressure on him? Is Bulger going to win in a shootout? I really doubt it. He's hardly done that in the past with a superior offensive cast, I can't see him doing it now with this offense. Do you think Haslett sincerely believes in Marc or do you think Jimmy H is open to competition next training camp?
Jeff Gordon: The '09 camp is a long way away. Let's see how Marc finishes out. This will be a HUGE week for him.
C Gent: Jeff - Any word on Manny Legace, Chris Mason, or Ben Bishop as to their injury status? I read something that said all could be ready before Thursday, but given Manny's knee injury history, I would rather them hold off on letting him play until they are REALLY sure that he is good to go. More specifically, I would hope they are not taking injury advice from the Cardinals as to when players are ready to return! Speaking of the Cardinals, any word on FA targets or trades on which they might be working.
Jeff Gordon: Legace is a good bet to return. I'd like to see Mason get a couple of AHL games before returning here after that time off. As for the Cards, the FA targets would start with shortstops (Renteria? Furcal? Cabrera) and LH relievers (Fuentes?)
Kevin: Jeff,
I was surprised that I didnt see any comments about Bulger's performance yesterday in todays paper.
I thought he reverted to old form; uncomfortable in the pocket, throwing off the back foot, not taking the time to check down to second or third receivers, throwing into double or triple coverage, etc. I realize that the pocket isnt always there, but the Rams very much need him to make plays even under pressure. (How many times do you throw the quick slant while back pedalling, etc?) Further, do you think he has the arm strength to take advantage of the speed of Avery, etc?
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Bulger will have to be better Sunday, for sure. He was OK, but OK didn't cut it in New England.
Griff21: I read an article that said the stars didn't have an AAA team so they loan their prospects to other clubs so the kids can play in the minors. Even the rivermen just got one of the prospects from the Stars.
this lead me to some Qs
first what kind of contract do the blues and stars have worked out to make such a deal happen( how much do we get & what are the terms )
secondly having a roster spot & ice time devoted to a kid who is not ours seems a little ridiculous. thats taking playing time & experience away from a future blue to help a rival team. or on the other hand, is it more important to get good players to help peoria to win?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know what number was agreed on, but it was small. It is not disruptive, because most of those guys at Peoria are just depth guys. Plus the Blues, who own the team, save a little dough on AHL contracts. There are very few blue-chip prospects there -- and the Blues hired the coach and Payne make sures the right guys play.
Craig: Hey Jeff,
As we all know the corner infield spots are set, so who do you see being or starting 2B/SS this coming year. If we can put a good bat at one of those positions, I will consider it a victory. Also, any news with the Adam Kennedy trade? Perhaps get some bullpen help?
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy doesn't have much trade value, so don't expect much there. I look for two bats in the middle infield. Maybe Lopez is one of them, based on what he did last year. Any shortstop would offer more offense than Izturis.
terry kates: I've notice a trend. When the Missouri Tiger's win, the Rams lose. And when the Tiger's lose, the Rams win. We need our teams on the same page, the win column that is.
Jeff Gordon: The football gods don't want us to have too much fun yet.
Ran: Putting the aside the usual "sky is falling" Ram fans mantra, where is the big gaping hole that our 1st round pick should address. Because like it or not RamsNation these are the facts.
1-secondary is shaping up and actually being a threat.
2-defensive line playing MUCH better and actually getting sacks.
3-offensive line is getting sturdy, not steady (this fan can't believe all sacks are Bulger's fault)
4-young WR's starting to show the next regime led by "the old master" Holt
5-one time All-Pro TE with LOTS to prove
6- LB's that are at least decent (This fan thinks Witherspoon is under-rated - he's young and a stud out there).
7- Total $$$ kicker and a young improving punter.
8- HB going into the prime of his career with a big contract - same for QB, face the facts fans, wether you like Bulger and Jackson or not- they are not going to be traded or benched. (I for one think they have what it takes)
Gordo- you're the GM for 30 seconds, what do you do? And don't cop out like a politician and say "depends on who's available" or "we'll have to see how things pan out"
The Draft is right now and the Rams are picking 10th, there's a quality player at every position, you're on the clock, choose a position that warrants a round 1, 10th pick overall, now go!
Oh yeah, don't forget to tell us why.
Jeff Gordon: Gotta take an OT, if at all possible. Pace's age and Greco's inability to play that position dictates that. There should be a couple of choices in that pick range.
B-Ball Fan: When will the Cards start releasing some more of the cast offs that we shouldn't have back on the team next year at all ?
Jeff Gordon: I don't how many of those guys merit getting released. Mulder's contract is up. Same with Izzy. Same with Clement. I wouldn't re-up Izturis, preferring to get a better hitter.
SynergyDMR: Jeff,
Thanks as always for the chats.
Is there a general consensus as to a "weak link" in the Rams offensive line?
Thanks Dave NYC
Jeff Gordon: Leckey is the guy that jumps out, because he is not a big guy and he had earlier trouble with shotgun snaps.
BrettB: Hey Gordo,
We're almost 1/10th of the way through the NHL Reg. Season. Since every sports writer picked the Blues to be at the bottom of the league. Which Forwards, Defenseman, and rookies are playing better then projected, and which ones need to step it up if the Blues want to prove everyone wrong, and make the playoffs? Here's to hoping were still talking Blues in April and May!
Jeff Gordon: Tkachuk is way above what anybody thought. McDonald and Kariya should be this good. Boyes just proved that last year wasn't a fluke. Most guys are doing what they are capable of. Walt is the big surprise.
B-Ball Fan: What the heck was dante hall doing on that last punt of the game ? That cost the team 10 seconds and any chance of doing a miracle hail mary. Unexcusable for a veteran to pull such a "BONE-HEAD" play. Kudos to Pittman for a fine game. He showed something yesterday to me.
Jeff Gordon: That was a great game for Pittman, a big step forward.
Lawarence Marmie: Now, I know the Rams did not play great, but has an edict been handed down by Goodall and the NFL for the refs to let the Patriots win? How could they not call a single penalty on the Patsies(okay, one was called, but declined because the play resulted in a first down) and then go an call eleven on the Rams (Nine accepted, two declined). That no-call on the late hite by Seymour on Bulger with the ref looking right at it should be reviewed and that ref suspended. Not only did he hit him 4 seconds after he released it, but he also gave him an extra shove as he was getting up, but apparently it didn't draw a flag. Even Incognito went running over to the ref to scream about how excessive it was.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, when Richie is appalled by missed calls, it's been a tough game.
EJ Rotert (aka Squib): If the Rams bolt back to Los Angeles eventually, do you think St. Louis has any chance of getting another NFL team? Considering the loophole in the arrangement they made when they came here, I always thought it was a good possibility that they would one day leave.
Jeff Gordon: Sure, the Rams could leave some day. If that happens, getting another team will be nearly impossible.
slap shot: Gordo,
When is Erik Johnson scheduled to have his surgery performed? What doctor will be performing his surgery? Must the Blues AND Johnson agree on the doctor? This seems to have been a long and drawn-out decision. What can you share with us?
Jeff Gordon: Normally there is no great controversy with the Blues and medical stuff. In the end, Erik and his people make the final call on what to do. In this case, I don't know if there is a big hang-up.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
How highly held is Troy Tulowitzki in Colorado? I've heard some folks say that they would trade Rasmus straight up, if at all...I always thought the package would have to include Rasmus, Perez, McClellan, Todd and Bill DeWitt's vacation home to get them to think of trading Tulo. This guy is a top 5 SS when he's healthy, and would be more of an improvement to this team than Peavy, Holliday and Sabathia (individually). Would COL even consider the package I mentioned, or is Tulo staying put for the duration of his contract?
Jeff Gordon: I can't imagine that the Rockies would trade a top five shortstop for a potential all-star outfielder. That is silly. Colorado has to keep him and Holliday.
Lawarence Marmie: What was up with the lack of blitzing by our defense yesterday- has Haslett resumed playcalling responsibilities again? Chris Long got some pressure late, but for almost the entire game, Cassel had all day to stand in the pocket, scan through his progressions, step up in the pocket, and deliver to his recievers. And when they weren't open, he usually had huge, gaping holes to scramble for first downs through. The Pats made adjustments in the second half and were able to repeatedly get the ball to Moss underneath- why does it seem like we are never able to make in-game adjustments with this coaching staff?
Jeff Gordon: Losing Little -- and missing Carriker -- took a lot of options away from the Rams. And the Patriots did react well when the Rams tried to add extra pressure with Leonard out.
As far as in-game adjustments, I didn't these complaints the last two weeks. So much of this is execution and who is healthy at the moment.
EJ Rotert (aka Squib): Also, in area college hoops, who do you think does best this season: Mizzou, Illinois, SIU or SLU?
Jeff Gordon: Mizzou and Illinois will be OK, but probably nothing more. Their conferences are so tough. So SLU has a chance to get a lot of attention as a breakout team.
Griff21: It's a shame to have King go down like this & miss most/ all of the season. I like porter too so it was sad to see him go down too. ok so since we got Koci I don't think hes played yet, right? unlike king who is a great fighter, and can skate and has some skills, Koci seems like an old school enforcer, good fighter, but slow & lacking skill. I have never seen him play, whats your take on the guy? was he just an opportune pick up? is he ever going to play?
Jeff Gordon: Koci will play just once in a while, against a real heavyweight that Cam can't handle.
AlwaysAFan: The Rams played with heart in all aspects of the game yesterday except on offense. Marc started off well but when the pressure started to come he reverted back to his old way of throwing off of his back foot. The Rams actually had a couple chances to put the game out of reach for the Patriots but their inability to convert on third down and score ended up costing them the game. I was hoping the addition of Orlando Pace would help Bulger and give him confidence in the pocket. What on earth do we do with Marc Bulger? He single-handedly drives fans (me specifically) crazy!!
Jeff Gordon: What must the Rams do with Bulger? Get him back to where he was. He is better, he isn't good enough to get to the playoffs.
Alejandro: Hey Gordo - Thanks for taking my question
What does the Cardinal middle infield equation look like for next year? With Kennedy wanting out, Ryan's stock apparently falling, and Iztruis's bat waiting until September to wake up, is their talk of converting Freese/Craig? Getting help from outside? What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will go out and get a SS capable of producing runs. Plenty of options out there.
Griff21: how bad is the NFC west? i know Seattle is facing injuries, SF I don't follow. the lowly lambs are currently tied for second place??! they have no shot to make the playoffs but is there really only one team in the division that will finish over 500?
Jeff Gordon: The division is so bad the Rams do have a chance.
cardsfaninphx: Seems like we've hashed and rehashed the whole offseason time and time again, but do we really know anything other than that the fans want the big name guys (Peavy and Manny Ramirez) and DeWitt and Co. simply want to retool with youth and cheap vets? The real question then is what DO YOU KNOW? Have DeWitt, Mo or someone else in the organization told you anything worth knowing that we haven't already heard? From the fans perspective it sure seems like we have the budget to get Furcal if we can get Lopez as an everyday 2B on the cheap. then we can use our young guys to fill up the pen. thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Could you wedge Furcal into a $100 million to $105 million payroll. Sure. That may not be the best way to go, but we'll see. DeWitt has made his budget well known and he has also explained why he doesn't want to gamble huge long-term dollars on pitching. Within that framework, Mozeliak can operate as he sees fit. He agrees with Mr. Bill's belief in player development.
It worked well for the Rays, no?
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Your gut feeling from being around the players and front office on a daily/weekly/monthly basis...what is the general feeling about Chris Carpenter's health and on what level do you see him contributing in 2009?
If Carpenter gives us 20-25 starts at the caliber he pitched against the Dodgers, and if Mo finds a middle infield solution, this team could fetch 95 wins and a playoff berth. I'm not even expecting a 30 start season from Carp.
By the way, you've got bragging rights on Joe. Your chat answers EVERY question throroughly, not just the ones with a clever intro!
Jeff Gordon: The team is hopeful, but there is no guarantee -- and everybody knows it. The team is ready to explore options.
slap shot: Gordo,
With the World Series set to conclude this week and the hot stove league stoking-up on the front burner, do you think Mo and the Cardinals will become active before or during the GM meetings in Las Vegas, NV? Can you let us in on any "rumblings" or rumors that you've heard coming out of the Cardinal offices? If you had to guess, will Mo's priority be 1) a closer, 2) a big bat, or, 3) a shortstop?
Jeff Gordon: Don't hold your breath on the big bat, judging from Mo is saying. Look for upgrades on offense, but not one huge FA.
RamsAtLast: Gordo: Despite improved protection, Bulger continues to play like a scared little girl. Skittish, holds on to ball too long, missing open receivers etc. How much longer before management admits signing him to this Uber-Contract was a mistake, and we start looking elsewhere, like the draft?
Jeff Gordon: Do you think anybody in the NFL Draft can get this team into the playoffs? That's not the way to go. If a change occurs, the Rams will need to get a guy like Cassel with experience.
richard rossberg: Jackson would have made the difference, but lets face it the Pats were short people too! My guestion is were the heck was Klop? We really needed a dump off target durring this one when the pressure came. I never heard his name once or saw him has he been completely written off?
Jeff Gordon: The latter.
Ryan: Any word on Ben Bishop? It was great to see him playing Saturday. A couple of times he looked out of place, but other than that he was up to the challenge and did really well. Also, how long do you expect the Blues to keep Bishop up? Until we have both Legace and Mason back?
Jeff Gordon: Bishop goes back when Manny and Chris are ready, which should be soon.
MOLINA037: Gordo, Bulger clearly is still not right. He has flourished in just ONE quarter this year and that was last week against Dallas in the first quarter when he threw with confidence and poise.
His throws are not even spirals sometimes. Marc has talent but when he throws off his back foot and gets pressure he is unable to make the throws that a pro-bowl caliber QB should make (especially when he is collecting $65 million.
When will it be time to draft a QB. Some of the names in the '09 draft are intriguing and I would be interested in if you think they will take one. Are there any hidden gems outside of the "top tier" QB's like Stafford, Bradford, or Sanchez?
The season is not over. We still have 5 games against NFC west rivals and three of them are at the dome. Go Rams.
Jeff Gordon: Again, I'd rather see the Rams add a young veteran as a priority over a kid QB. That would get quicker results, if Marc can't get back on trouble.
Zuke: Increasing Scoring in hockey...
Has anybody given any thought to increasing the size of the goal. I know traditionalists will say no, but what is traditional about goalie equipment? By what percentage has goalie equipment increased over the last 25 years? Can that be applied to the goal? At what point did positioning and size become more important than reflexes. In fact, we hardly see any great save highlights anymore. In stead, goalies just stand there and let it hit their equipment.
Visual why scoring is down (Could Brett hull score 86 goals with this goalie equipment?)

Just look at the open net space.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, that is one thing the GMs have talked about. And I like the idea -- since the Rams have a 6-foot-7 goaltender.
dfwramsfan: Gordo,
Bulger looks below average at best! If the Rams decide to go with a young QB to develope along side Avery and Burton, what are their options on Bulger and that huge contract?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could dump him after last year and not take that big of a cap hit.
MichaelS: Jeff, thanks for the coverage of the StL sports scene. Question about the Blues: Assuming all goalies get healthy, why not have Bishop up with the Blues, backing up and/or playing? If all the 'experts' say we're a long shot to make the playoffs, why not let Bishop bond with the other youngsters who are going to form the core of this team for the years to come? He would be able to work with Wamsley, train with NHLers, learn to travel/train properly, bond with teammates, etc...how is playing against the Icehogs and Wolves mostly on weekends going to help him for when he faces the Redwings, Blackhawks, etc...If the other young players can be here, why not him? Mason's contract hurts this I know, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the future of the Blues. What have they got to lose?
Jeff Gordon: Bishop could use significant work at the AHL level. Then he'll be ready to play later this year or next year.
Darin: I understand financial responsibility, but the Cardinals starting pitching staff looks an awful lot like the team that finished in fourth place in 2008:
Wainwright
Lohse
Pinero
Wellemeyer
McClellen(?)
Can we please get another starting pitcher? Note: Carpenter is not listed due to the "Mulder Rule." The "Mulder Rule" involves players, mostly pitchers, that are not counted on by anyone except Cardinal brass.
Jeff Gordon: Again, the Cards will either add a depth guy or something better, depending on Chris' offseason progress. Garcia's injury makes that mandatory.
Tyler Shrum: Who do you think has been the most underrated Blue this year? Overated?
What do you think about the Blues rookies this year so far?(Oshie, Berglund)
Whats the status on Manny and Bishop?
Jeff Gordon: Underrated Blue? Maybe McClement, who is much better than a year ago.
Oshie has a bigger impact because of his skating and hitting. He adds energy. Berglund is solid, a rock.
rrodgers92: Gordo, my question is about the walking wounded. Can you give me the status on the following guys for Sunday against the Cards:
Jackson
Little
Carriker
Tye Hill
Bennett
Jeff Gordon: Bennett won't play, for sure. The rest we'll talk about later today with Haslett.
Guts Danson: Gordo,
What is Murray's problem with young people? Does it really benefit the development of players for Murray to go out of his way to point out that the young guys are getting too much credit? Murray appears to have the disposition of the grumpy old man from Saturday Night Live, does anyone think that is a helpful attribute for a coach trying to develop youth?
I am making a submission for the Blues BlueTube contest, is there any chance I can convince you to wrestle Bernie M for my video?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not much of a wrestler and Bernie is a pretty strong dude.
As for Andy, he is just keeping the kids focused. This is the NHL. He has way more kids this year than he is used to having. Also, he wants to make sure the Tkachuks of the team get enough credit.
rrodgers92: Gordo, thanks for taking the time. With the horrific beginning to the season, we could still be 3-5 at the halfway point. Before the season started, looking at the schedule, most of us would have thought 3-5 was pretty realistic. The Arizona Cardinals still have @Seattle, Giants, @Philly, @ New England.
With a second half 5-3 mark (again, I think realistic), do the Rams have a shot to win the West at 8-8?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, that is realistic -- but Arizona has the weapons to win this thing. The Gridbirds are the team to beat. Sunday will be fun.
Walt: Gordo,
Why did you always have something against Pavel Bure? What did the Russian Rocket do to you besides dominate the Blues? Maybe we should bring him out of retirement to help our 5 on 5 play.
Jeff Gordon: Pavel is an interesting guy, just not the hardest-core player ever. Too bad he didn't stay healthy long enough to play in the NHL. Faster score I ever saw, before he got hurt.
Justin: Gordo, as a huge Blues fan and a fan of an NFL team 400 miles from St. Louis (the Packers), I continue to be annoyed by much of the local media's indifference toward the Note. As a long-suffering fan, I'm excited about the prospects of a skilled, young team, built the right way through drafting, player development and (mostly) smart trades and free-agent signings, that could be a force for the next 8-10 years. My question is this -- as a fellow puck-head and a member of the media, what do you think it will take for the Blues to begin to eat away at the attention that's paid to one of the most mediocre, unexciting teams in professional sports? Is it even possible?
Jeff Gordon: St. Louis is getting interested in this team again, but it takes time. Finishing last overall takes it toll. But the public is buzzing about pucks again.
Justin: Gordo, Jeremy Rutherford seems to take the side of Andy Murray and John Davidson, but I'd like your opinion on the play of Eric Brewer, not only this season, but where you think he stands in terms of other NHL defensemen.
Jeff Gordon: Well . . . until this season, he was way too mistake-prone. He needs to be better this year with so many kids playing D. Same with Jackman, Too mistake-prone last year, especially. Brewer has been given a lot of responsibility, so it's air to expect more from him -- especially with expectations growing.
dingo: what is the highest bowl game that the tigers could get in to if they win out plus the big 12 champ. game??? if some of the top teams lose again could they get into the bcs champ game??
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams won out, then beat a top of the pile team in the conference title game, the Tigers would factor in there somewhere. But remember, Penn State and USC probably won't lose again.
Pete: Who are you a proponent of in terms of left handed bullpen help. Obviously there's Fuentes, but we're not going to be the only suitors for him and he will cost in the form of draft picks being a Type A FA. I personally like Ohman or Affeldt. What are your thoughts for those two being a fit. Do you think Salas or Perdomo making a splash in Spring Training?
Jeff Gordon: Don't look for either young hurler right away next year, but perhaps later they could move into range. You guys are solid set-up option, but I'd spend what it takes to get a Type A free agent lefty closer. They are rare. He and Perez would be great at end of games.
Chris: If we go after another d-man, who gets dealt? One of our 3 veterans? Jackman has been playing way too sloppy. Too many passes up the middle. They teach you not to do that as a kid.
Jeff Gordon: Don't look for a veteran to leave. There are too many kids moving in and out. The vets just have to play better.
Chris: Why was Brewer picked as captain over Tkachuk? It seems clear that this is his team. First to do interviews, first to talk to refs, you always see him talking to the players, picking up the pucks for the kids after thier goals, etc...
Jeff Gordon: Keith has been phenomenal this year. And he has been a captain before. And he really IS a leader on this team, without the C. Part of the deal with Brewer is pushing him toward better, more consistent performance. The guy does care, he just needs to clean up the play in the defensive zone.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, considering how the rams have played lately, could they have a shot at the playoff's yet? I'm hoping for 10-6 or 9-7 and the nfc west title. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: 10-6? No, but this team will be competitive every game from here on out. 9-7 and 8-8 are possibilities, but there is lots to do.
rj: With all the talk fo the town about the officaiting of Sunday's game in NE, will the Rams make a call to the league office and register a complaint or is that something the league will do on its own accord? Would the Rams be thought of as whiners if they do?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams can bring it up and the league can disregard it.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, if Haslett is retained oops I mean hired as head coach ( I don't want to offend Dan Rooney, he might tattle on us again) which coaches would he probally retain on his staff? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Good question. Some of these guys aren't Jim's guys and there could be significant change, depending on how this plays out. Venturi would be a big exception, obviously.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I thought that a blow to the head to the QB was illegal? Or being that we were playing in NE that Richard Seymore is allowed to hit bulger on the helmet and shove him down with an official right there and get no flags.
Jeff Gordon: You can put a hand up on the head, just not whack it. There can be a fine line there . . . and getting that call at New England apparently is tough.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I am sick and tired of all this talk about booting Bulger and drafting a rookie QB. Wouldn't drafting O-line players help more? Besides for every Dan Marino, there is 20 Ryan Leafs.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. I'd draft a rookie for the long haul, but if you want quicker help for next year, go for a young veteran like Cassel. Protection is vital for whomever plays down there.
Mike: Gordo
What are the chances the Blues can keep this up all season? I know they're young, but doesn't that mean that should actually improve as the season progresses?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe, but the kids can also wear out playing at this level. That could be a drag on the season. And the schedule gets tough late.
JJ: Is Oshie going to be an impact player all year? whats your prediction on total points? He seems to play more selfless than any other player out there on the ice almost like he's affraid other will see him as a puck hog whats your take? I guess is mifs me when berglund shoots from all over the ice with very little "ice eyes" when TJ knows where everyone is all the time...your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Oshie might get 40 to 50 points. Berglund may get 30 to 40. Oshie's wheels will get him opportunities. Berglund will get his off the draw as linemates finish. He does need to adjust to the speed of the game.
brutus0117: Hi Jeff -
1-Even though Bulger didn't play great in the 2nd half, I'm a little shocked at so many people want to pin the lose on him alone. I think to many people took what JC "what's-his-name"'s comments in the game a gospel.
Everyone seems to be disregarded: the total breakdown in protection (which some people GENEROUSLY called "not bad"), penalties (resulting in 3rd & longs), odd playcalling and a couple of missed routes and hot-reads... well that's a little simplistic and lazy.
2-Some of the non-calls Sunday were to the point absurd. I assume the Rams will send a protest to the NFL office. Will we ever hear the NFL's comments on the game?
Thanks (as always),
Brutus
Jeff Gordon: The NFL seldom owns up to poor officiating, so don't hold your breath on that. As for the collective failure of the offense, those are all valid points. But Marc does have to do better from his end.
Rod Shetler: Hey Jeff,
I've heard a lot of talk about potential starters, middle infielders, etc., that might be on the Cardinals' wish list this offseason. I have yet to hear anything about the most needed upgrade - closer. Who is out there, and what have you heard?
Rod Shetler
Springfield, MO
Jeff Gordon: The guy I want is Fuentes -- a lefty AND a closer.
FloridaBluesFan: Should Barry Melrose be fired for the lackluster start of TampaBay?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, there was talk of that already -- and not idle internet chatter.
BrettB: Jeff, why is it that Stempy, Berglund, and Perron get more powerplay minutes then Oshie? Maybe its just me, but Oshie sticks out way more when he's on the ice then the above players. And please don't tell me they're trying to help get Lee out of his rut since being injured.
Jeff Gordon: Lee is a shooter who could help on the point, so that is why the Blues want him out there. Berglund and Perron have different assets -- size and hands, respectively.
Blueline: Jeff, Are there any backup QB's in the NFL that you could see coming to St. louis if the Rams decide to go in another direction next year. That meaning cutting Bulger in the off season...
Jeff Gordon: How about Cassel? He can't back Brady forever.
BrettB: Why did everyone freak out, when Sarah Palin was announced as going to drop the puck last week? Do people realize that both parties were invited, and she actually enjoys hockey, unlike the other candidates who wouldn't be caught near a hockey arena.. My take, that's great for the Sport, as well as the city.
Jeff Gordon: But she should have made sure the rug didn't trip Manny . . .
JJ: Will Oshie really be Tiger Woods for Halloween? Will Berglund really be his swedish wife?
That was hilarious...on a serious note. Will the Blues give Oshie the go ahead to shoot more often than pass? Great players can do both. Oshie has either setup or has played a BIG role in controling the puck and really hasn't had the opportunities that he should have. Every annoucer has said he is like a dog on a bone...well every once in a while that dog will get to chew on that bone too...not just be tempted by it...
Jeff Gordon: It's fun to be able to talk about such an exciting player. He is living up to the hype.
That's it for today -- off to Rams Park! See you next week.
