Rajah424: Mr. G.
With a glut of outfielders in front of him, would Darryl Jones have any chance to be moved to the infield for a look at my old spot at 2b?
Thanks,
Rog |
| Jeff Gordon: Jones has made a rapid climb this year, underscoring the organization's great depth at the position. His upside appears to exceed Barton's potential. It's a good situation to have. I'd expect at least one of the OFs to depart this winter in trade as John Mozeliak shuffles his assets. Certainly the organization needs to beef up in the middle infield, but switching positions is probably not the answer. |
|
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
First off, let me tip my cap to you for your prophetic observation in last week's chat when you called Brett Wallace's promotion to Springfield a day before the announcement was made.
Now let me ask you another Brett Wallace-related question. John Mozeliak suggested in his most recent live chat session that Wallace, along with other 3B prospect David Freese, will get some outfield work during the coming off-season.
I find that a rather interesting comment. The Cards are top-heavy in outfielders ... Ludwick, Ankiel, Schumacher, Mather, Stavinoha, Rasmus, Barton, et al. One can't help but wonder if any of the aforementioned outfielders - including Ludwick and Ankiel - could be traded for prime-time bullpen help or a power-hitting middle infielder if the Cards are considering putting Freese and/or Wallace in the outfield.
To add to the complexity, Troy Glaus has another year left on his contract, so it sort of makes it difficult for Freese or Wallace to get a crack at 3B next season. And what if Glaus has another productive season in 2009? He certainly has at least a couple more good years left in him after that. Is there room for Glaus, Freese, and Wallace in 2010? Does any one of those three have the range to switch to 2B?
Granted, Wallace just made it to Springfield, so he still has at least one more full year left in the minors. But Freese's numbers this year at Memphis are pretty stout. He's certainly good enough to make next April's roster ... but where to put him???
Jeff, what's your take on how all this will play out?
Oh, the possibilities!!!
Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: It does boggle the mind. Glaus has been a terrific fit here, so Mozeliak ought to consider floating an extension offer to Troy this winter. Why not? I think he has exceeding expectations.
Wallace is a fast tracker, likely to be in the bigs by the end of the '09 season. If he can play some OF, that helps -- since 1B appears to be his best position. He can really drive the ball and you can never have too many players like that. He is another reason why "Mo" has to move at least one outfielder this winter to address his glut at the position.
Freese could use one more year at Class AAA, since he skipped Double-A and had to become more disciplined at the plate. But if he can play multiple positions, that could help him get some fill-in work here next season. Trouble is, Mather can play first, third and all three outfield spots.
Nice problem to have. But can "Mo" turn some of this surplus into a shortstop for '09 |
|
ecleme2: Hey Gordo!
I've heard with Ramus coming up next year, probably, the outfield may be Ankiel-Ludwick-Ramus, with Skip platooning.
I think have four really good outfielders is great, but Skip is having a great season this year---I wouldn't be so quick to call him the platoon man. Besides his good numbers, Skip's AB/K ratio really offsets Ludwick/Ankiel/Glaus.
I would like to know your thoughts on the '09 outfield. Thanks Gordo! |
Jeff Gordon: Given Colby's setbacks this year, he's not a lock to start next year as a Card. But he'll be here next season for sure. I can see the four you mentioned plus Mather starting the year, since Mather can also fill in at first and third. It's possible "Mo" could move a player, if something attractive came up, since Barton would be the odd man out in this deal - and Duncan could still make another comeback.
If the Cards did end up with Ankiel-Rasmus-Ludwick, with Schumaker and Mather in reserve, that would be an amazing offensive/defensive group. |
|
| dalejrs88crew: is aaron crow signable for the cardinals.they could use a young pitcher with his talent |
Jeff Gordon: He'll got back into the draft and the Hendricks Brothers will again shoot for the moon. It'll be an interesting case. Will he go high in the draft, or plunge because of signability? If he plunged, then, sure, throwing money at him would make more sense that gambling much bigger money on a middle-tier veteran.
Did the Nationals screw up this deal or did Crow get bad advice? That is open to debate, but you hate to see that sort of talent go unsigned. What if he gets hurt? |
|
| Charlie Yarnall: OK Tony, we have had enough!! When will the Cardinals start playing Miles instead of Looser Lopez?? He can't even make a simple play at second base and cost us a game against the Braves. Miles is a MUCH better hitter and fielder. Why does Tony insist on playing Lopez? I would much rather see Ryan in there instead of Lopez. Please dump Lopez and bring Ryan back!! |
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, that was a tough play. Part of that falls on Pujols, too, getting over to cover first. Nice to see Adam stand up for Felipe on that point.
Miles and Kennedy have both played good defense this year and both have hit. So unless Lopez does dramatic things at the plate -- like provide power and speed -- it's hard to justify an everyday role for him. |
|
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
As you know, we Card fans get mighty attached to those home-grown ballplayers who perform up to our expectations and have a good guy reputation. Add a great story line with the glittering appeal of Ankiel's and we cannot imagine them wearing any other uniform than the 'Birds on the Bat'.
Keeping the above in mind, hang with me Gordo, cause here we go;
Is there added value in the trade market that is factored in for that glittering appeal for a fan favorite ballplayer that may go beyond his playing ability? After all, part of the game is selling those tickets and a good story line ballplayer with untapped potential talent that oozes with power juices can generate ticket sales can't they?
With that said, in last weeks chat session you brought up a deal that to get Dan Uggla we would have to give up a guy like Ankiel. Not knowing anything about Uggla's charachter myself, lets say for "even value" on the charachter side of things Uggla is Ankiel like. We know we love Uggla's bat at the 2b position for what it can produce, but is his DEFENSE and CLUTCH hitting worth making that swap? Not knowing anything much about the guy other than his misplays in the ALL-STAR game I have questions/doubts about Uggla's mental makeup that can make good players great or just leave them above average. We beleive we have a gem in Ankiel's package. Is Uggla's package just as attractive?
Another variable that comes to mind is do you think this is a deal the Cards would make if they thought Ankiel would exit the team when he is FA eligible? More specifically, from what you think/know, is ANKIEL "one of those guys" that would migrate from the banks of the Misssissippi to the banks of the Ohio...as in...ohhh...say Cincinnatti?
Thank you very much for answering my rather lengthy questions! I love the chat that you always take the time for. God bless... |
Jeff Gordon: I only mentioned Ankiel in the Uggla equation because he could appear to Florida as a charismatic South Florida native. Perhaps the Marlins would buck up for him, something they haven't done with Uggla. Ankiel could command nice coin as a free agent, so Mozeliak will have an interesting time trying to extend his deal.
What is his value? What is Ludwick's long-term value? These are interesting questions. Fortunately, the Cards are clearing lots of dead payroll after this year, so Mozeliak won't be handcuffed.
Somebody has to go from this outfield. I advocate keeping Rasmus, given his well-rounded ability and his youth. I love Mather's potential and versatility, Schumaker's skill and work ethic, Ludwick's power and defense, Barton's speed . . . but something has to give.
And, yes, this team needs to add some middle-infield oomph. The last Cardinal second baseman to drive in 60 runs was Tommy Herr. Grudzielanek, Vina and DeShields were pretty good offensive players, but the Cards will need a run producer in that position to keep up with the Cubs and Brewers. Uggla is exactly the type of guy this team needs, but there wlll be other possibilities.
|
|
Ken: What are the Cap ramifications if Drew Bennett is released? Does he have any value in a trade?
He should have catched the first ball for a TD or at least 1st and goal. It wasn't an easy catch but it was not a hard ball to catch. The second ball he just either stopped running or is just too slow for the game. If he is hurt, at least sit him down and let the kids play with Holt and McMichaels. Dane Looker is a definite keeper. Dante Hall is growing tiresome with his little naggging injuries. Another mistake in trading for him, but at least I would give him the rest of the season to prove me wrong. But Drew is just awful and it is time to move on.
Any chance Drew is done with the RAMS? |
Jeff Gordon: There would be a cap hit, yes. But my guess is he'll get one more year while Avery and Burton get established. No coach likes to admit he made a horrible mistake.
I'd cut Bennett, turn the page and play the kids. This is Year Two for Drew and he has done nothing to this point to justify playing time. |
|
| raymond asfar: do you think the cards made a major mistake is trading anthony reyes. he is pitching lights out for cleveland. reminds of the steve carlton deal. |
Jeff Gordon: Whoa . . . Steve Carlton? I'm a big Reyes fan, but sometimes a kid needs a fresh start. His trade value wasn't great. The Cards picked up a good arm for him, a reliever capable to contending for work next year.
As you can see, the Cards really do have a starting pitching surplus. Pineiro wins three games this month and moves to the pen. Todd and Mortensen are on the climb. Garcia is, too. Boggs seems to be prepping himself for a long-relief role. Thompson still has to fight for a role on this staff. I'm happy for Anthony, but it's not like he didn't get chances here.
When he pulled up with a sore elbow just as the Cards were about to put him back in the rotation in the middle of this season, that was it for him. The next chance never came. |
|
| TEASTERN: Mr. Gordon, Derek Stanley has not been playing much in the preseason, is this a bad sign? Thanks for taking my question. |
| Jeff Gordon: Some folks wondered if the Rams were keeping a lid on the kid so they could sneak him back onto the practice squad. But with Hall, Bennett and Caldwell all getting banged up, perhaps that could change. Stanley had a very strong offseason and his willingness to fill in at cornerback in practice spoke well to his future. The more a kid can do, the more likely he is to stick some day. |
|
Delictous Sexsploscious: Jeff
I read in Derrick Goulds blog that he heard The Commish say the following: "The Cardinals choice to let their No. 1a pitcher drift like this is either a telling sign of their situation, their philosophy or Wainwright’s place. An ace starts, no question, right?"
What is your opinion of this assessment?
I agree, an ace is an ace, and he starts, no matter what.
Cheers
Delictous |
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but La Russa didn't want to throw the closer burden onto Perez without having options. He is letting Perez grow into that responsibility. So far, his second stint here has gone very well. But Tony left the option to move Adam into the pen with Carpenter moving closer to starting again. And, again, Pineiro had just turned himself around in the rotation.
If the Cards bullpen was airtight, TLR wouldn't even think about sliding Adam back there. But it's not airtight, as we saw again Saturday. |
|
| Jerome: Do you think that Burton could take Bennet #2 spot sooner rather than later with his performance. Holt Burton and Avery R-Mac and Jackson sounds good to me |
| Jeff Gordon: I agree. Burton goes and gets the ball. Had he been healthy in college last year, he would have been drafted ahead of Avery. He has that kind of talent. |
|
| Deron Strickland: After watching donnie avery and keenan burton against the ravens, do you think that avery could be the 2nd coming of isaac bruce, as ive heard some make the comparison. Did he look as fast as 4.20 speed in the game? |
Jeff Gordon: Donnie has a burst, something we haven't seen from a young guy here since Curtis arrived. But Ike was one of the best route-runners in the history of the NFL. His ability to accelerate while cutting is so rare. And he had the hands and toughness to capitalize. If Donnie can become as good as Curtis, that would be a solid goal for him.
Burton, with his hands, will also generate some generous comparisons in the weeks ahead. |
|
Rick: How early/late into the season does Linehan realize that Bennett is not an NFL #2 wideout ? Even if he is reluctant to slide Avery or Burton into that spot, what about sure handed Looker ? Bennett has been a huge disappointment, and even more so knowing they let Bruce walk. Is he having trouble picking up Saunders offense ? It appears to be a lack of talent.
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Bennett has talent. He has put up numbers. But can he stay healthy? Can he find the motivation to regain his old form? Those are legit questions. I haven't seen him a thing that would merit a starting role here. The Rams need to ignore his contract and play the best receivers. |
|
| Austin: Whats up with Ankiel, hes hasnt been playing much, is he still hurt???? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is not 100 percent yet, which is why he has played left field. And he has struggled against certain types of pitching. And the Cards have some pretty capable alternatives. |
|
Organic Meatbag: Jeff,
I know the Rams tied up a lot of money in Drew Bennett and they would hate to admit that he was a failed experiment, but what are the chances that Avery or Burton could have a legitimate chance of starting across from Torry? Seems to me that he is becoming a real liability with all of these dropped passes, pre-season or not. |
| Jeff Gordon: You are right. And if he develops a nagging hip/groin injury, that will only make it worse. I would play the heck out of the rookie receivers during the final preseason game and then ride them in the real games, too. As Linehan said, the sky's the limit with them. |
|
MarV from CALI: Gordo,
hey as always thanks for all the information that you usually provide. It's excellent for me and people like me who check out this site daily to stay on the up and up. I just wanted to know how Chris Long's progress is going. I know you can't judge any rookie for a long long time but there hasn't been much about him to read so i was wondering if you could give any inside info. Much appreciated. And does anyone know the origin of his 'war paint' on gamedays? Marc CALIFORNIA |
| Jeff Gordon: The coaches express confidence in his development, but he hasn't done much to stand out at this point. His most notable defensive plays have been made with second or third effort. But he is fitting in and the Rams defense has been most encouraging, overall, during the last two preseason games. |
|
Arturo: Hi Jeff,
Sorry, but I was just cut-off, my question is how impressive were the two wr rookies and how long will it take to get these two in the starting line-up since Hall and Bennett haven't done anything to impress yet.
Thanks
A |
| Jeff Gordon: Don't know if either rookie will start soon, but both should play a lot. They really changed the game when they came in. Also look for Dane Looker to play more this year, given his strong preseason. |
|
| Hawg: Joe Morgan recently said: "there are teams who score early and wait to get beat"(by not scoring again until late, if at all). The 2008 St. Louis Cardinals are such a team. I saw my first Cardinal game at Sportsman's Park in 1947 against the Boston Braves so I've seen the good and bad. While this team is not too bad, it is also not good. Fans are fooling themselves to thin the Cardinals are going to post season. |
| Jeff Gordon: My view of the team hasn't changed much all year. It is good enough to hang in the race (contrary to national opinion), but not good enough to actually reach the playoffs. The team's offensive inconsistency baffles me. How does this team lose two of five home games to the Pirates and Braves? Nobody will back into the NL playoffs this year. |
|
cyclone77: Gordo,
First off a huge thank you to yourself and Mr Thomas for doing these chats to keep us fans up on the latest Ram news.
My question is the WR position for the 53 man roster. Who are they gonna be? Mine are as follows with comments:
1) Holt - no brainer no comment needed.
2) Hall - if healthy still a great return man.
3) Avery - great speed takes Hall's place in the near future as returner & WR. Near future may be now if Hall is not healthy.
4) Burton - together with Avery the Rams WR starters in the near future.
5) Looker - great preseason he replaces Bennett as possession threat.
6) Stanley - with what he showed the end of 07 on returns, his playmaking getting cudos after every practice at camp and now a fill in emergency DB to add to his verstility.
7) Depending on injuries it may come down to 6 WR's with 1 utility man like NE had with Brown. For me this gets filled by Hagans / Stanley.
I've given up on Bennett. It's time to swallow hard and move on.
Thank You
Go Rams
5) |
Jeff Gordon: Hall is iffy. If that ankle problems lingers (a massive issue last year), the Rams will have to make a decision. He can't help this team much at WR, but he is clearly the best return guy. Can the Rams afford to keep a pure return guy at the expense of Stanley or Hagans?
I agree on Bennett . . . but it's hard to own up to such a large mistake. |
|
Jerome Cox: Why isn't QB Green playing in the preseason?
Is Bennent good enought to make this team? The perseasion games I'v seen Looker and others are much better than he is. It seems to me being able to catch the ball is better than the potential to catch the ball.
> |
| Jeff Gordon: Green knows the offense inside/out. And the Rams want to keep him healthy. The longer he goes without getting smashed in the head (ala Carson Palmer!) the better. I'd throw him a little work at KC, but otherwise I'd like Berlin and Gradkowski continue their battle for No. 3. |
|
| phil newman: Who do you like for the rotation next year (barring any signings this winter)? |
Jeff Gordon: With Lohse returning to Earth, perhaps the Cards will be able to keep him. So here goes:
Carpenter
Wainwright
Wellemeyer
Lohse or Looper, depending on how the FA market plays.
Pineiro
Garcia on deck, to step in for the first injury. |
|
| Tackleberry: To your knowledge does Bulger do any outside work in the off-season to address his terrible foot speed/agility? He probably has the least amount of scrambling ability of any starting QB in the NFL, and while the o-line issues of the past couple years have played a major role in him taking a lot of hits, he also has contributed to the issue as well. |
| Jeff Gordon: Well, he wasn't on "Dancing with the Stars" if that's what you mean. There is not a heck of a lot Marc can do about his ability. And if he tries to beef up to better withstand hits, that will only get worse. |
|
Crazy_Legs: Gordo, do you think that either Avery or Burton will pass Hall on the depth chart? Will Hall's ankle injury have anything to do with it or would it be solely based off of performance this pre-season (albeit just one game for Avery)? And if so what player do you see as having the best chance of replacing Hall in the 3rd slot?
It appears to me that Burton is more athletic than Hall and Avery has a better burst of speed. Nothing against Hall but I think we will be more successful with one of those players on the field than Hall. What's your take? |
| Jeff Gordon: Even when healthy, Hall is very limited as a receiver. Saunders has some plays for him, as he did in KC, but he is strictly a spot player at WR. The two kids are potential starters. |
|
biggame1190: Hey Gordo
I have 2 questions for you if you please
1. Will Dante Hall be ready to go by week one at Philly or is his ankle injury more Serious than I thought?
2.Will Steven Jackson be playing in Against the Chiefs and if so how many touches will Steven be gettin
Thanx |
Jeff Gordon: Linehan's line on Hall was this: High ankle sprain, not as bad as last year. But that makes him iffy for the opener. Stay tuned.
I'd expect Jackson to take a few handoffs at KC just to get a feel for it. Exposing him to lots of heavy contact after limited practice time wouldn't be a good idea. He'll have more prep time after the Chiefs game to get ready for Philly. |
|
| Ken, South Lake Tahoe, CA: Hey Gordo, thanks for the chat. How long before for the talented rookie wide receivers (Avery, Burton) climb up the depth chart ahead of the exhausting Drew Bennett? I'm sick and tired of Drew Bennett. He has poor hands and he CAN'T stay healthy. I realize the new kids have a lot to learn before unseating a veteran WR, but isn't it nice to see some fresh bodies on the field? I can't belive we passed on potential WR2 free agents like Bernard Berrian in the offseason... Thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: Spending big dough on Berrian didn't make sense, since the Rams got what they needed in the draft. Thank goodness the Rams took both these kids, because both will play a lot. |
|
steve: Gordo:
If Glaus duplicates his 2008 season in 2009, do you think the Cardinals will attempt to re-sign him for 2010 and beyond with Freese, Wallace, and Craig in the minors playing the same position? Also, predict who will likely be on the team starting 2009 among Miles, Izturis, Kennedy, Lopez, Ryan, Greene...assuming no middle infielder is acquired in the offseason.
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Glaus has fit so well that an extension would be a great idea. It's hard to find heavy hitters who can play reliably over there. Freese has some pop, but I'd rather stick with the sure thing for a few more years. |
|
Ray: Hey Gordo:
I was thrilled to see Pujols have such a good series. My theory is that the two off-days last week revitalized him. If so, perhaps Tony could plan a few more off-days for him during the middle of the year (as difficult as that might be). It seems Tony says as much every year, but little is actually done. Comments? |
| Jeff Gordon: The off days are a godsend to Albert, who absolutely hates to sit. But with the Cards in catch-up mode and time running out, it will be hard to sit Albert, EVER, unless that elbow forces him out. |
|
bfulton: A lot of positive talk this offseason about Dane Looker and Derek Stanley but not so much for Drew Bennett. Any chance that the latter gets cut for the former?
In that same vein, will Chris Long lose snaps to Hall or Adenyaju come the regular season or will he learn on the job? |
| Jeff Gordon: Adeyanju has really taken a step this summer. He will get the playing time Wroten got once upon a time. He can play outside and inside. He is more of a pure run stuffer than Wroten, but he has improved his pass skills. Hall is looking like the guy the Rams got a year ago, before the ankle injury. Haslett wants to rotate all his D-linemen to keep them fresh, but it will be interesting to see how man snaps Long plays as the season progresses. |
|
| Mike Van: Hey Gordo, this is Mike from Portland, Oregon. My dad, brother, and I are lifelong Rams fans and we'll be in town for the Giants game on the 14th. Still wondering what our best move for tickets is. Is it possible to show up at the EJD on gameday and still get good seats? Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Check the brokers. The prices won't be too bad. If they are, then you can absolutely count on seeing a LOT of seats up for sale on the streets. A LOT of tickets. The Rams will have to win quite a few games to wash that 3-13 from the minds of ticket holders. |
|
Springfieldcard: Jeff,
How do you see the OF situation shaking out next year? With Ankiel, Ludwick, Schumaker, Mather, Stavinoha, Barton, and Duncan on the big league roster this year and Rasmus, Jay, D Jones, Marti, Haerther, and Robinson pushing for AAA jobs, what is your best guess as to what will be done with all of these guys? |
Jeff Gordon: How about Marti? He just kills Mexican League pitching, but there seems to be no chance for the Cuban defector to play here. Jones is a high-end prospect, more so that Jay, Robinson or Stavinoha. Haerther is a classic case of a guy being in the wrong organization at the wrong time.
As I noted earlier, "Mo" will have to trade at least one OF this winter while filling other needs. Which one? That will depend on other teams see these guys. |
|
Springfieldcard: Jeff,
Will Bryan Anderson be with the cardinals organization next spring or with another organization? Also do you see Bryan , Rasmus, Barden, or Phelps possibly seeing St. Louis up close this September? |
Jeff Gordon: I assume that Lopez bumped Barden, since Ryan will return. Phelps is a must have guy, power plus the ability to catch im a pinch. Rasmus would have been a no-brainer if healthy, but now it may make sense to push back his arrival until he is really ready to make a mark.
Anderson could become a trade chip. On the other hand, he could offer a year's protection against a serious Molina injury. Long-term, something has to give there. |
|
AlexJackson: Hi Jeff, thanks for taking the time answering fan questions. I actually have 2.
1. Drew Bennett has had the drops and though he hasn't rolled his eyes yet, Bulger is clearly displeased with him. #10 is clearly losing whatever confidence he had in him. Does Bennett hold onto the #2 WR spot?
2. The last two games the defense has played a couple of offenses that were either good but not playing the 1's or playing the 1's but not a good offense. Despite that they've done what they're supposed to do, shut them down. Do you think this will continue into the regular season and if so, what has been the biggest change from last year?
3. Sneaking a third one in here, is the team gaining confidence in their head coach? |
Jeff Gordon: We've covered Bennett. It IS tough to get excited about the "D" just yet, given the beating that occurred in Tennessee and the lack of competition Saturday. But with a healthy Little and a healthy Witherspoon, the front seven looks pretty good. Wade has come a long way at CB.
Linehan is more animated on the sidelines. He is coaching like a guy in the make-or-break season as a head coach. He knows what is at stake and it shows. Is the team buying it? Let;s see if they can string together some victories to regain some confidence. |
|
| Springfieldcard: Jeff, Name your starting rotation for 2009. Do you think Lohse or Looper will be back in St, Louis? I have Carp, Waino, Pineiro, Wellemeyer, and Garcia in my rotation for next year. |
Jeff Gordon: As I noted earlier, keeping either Lohse or Looper would be wise. That would keep Garcia in the No. 6 slot, just in case. That would buy Mortensen more time to develop.
Previously, I slid McClellan into the rotation for next year. Duncan likes him in that role. But Izzy's demise and Springer's age may force the team to keep him in the pen for another year after keeping one of the FAs. |
|
bjsgolf: Gordo,
This is a serious question. Could the Rams cut Drew Bennett, or is the cap hit too much too stomach. Based on Saturdays game, I would hate to see him take any playing time from Avery, Burton or Looker. At least those guys try hard. |
| Jeff Gordon: Sure, the Rams could cut him. That would be a jarring move, an admission that his signing was a terrible idea. his contract could save him, but it won't guarantee him playing time if the kids keep coming. |
|
corey: Hi Jeff,
First time poster here... Why (in your opinion) is LaRussa so in love with Kyle Mccellan? It seems like he gives up key hits in every game he comes into (the past 2-3 months.) His ERA is very deceptive because he usually comes into games with men on base, and doesn't get charged for the runs he gives up. But, they keep sending him out there (sometimes for 2 innings game after game.) Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Corey |
Jeff Gordon: Kyle has pitched a LOT of baseball this year, more than a rookie normally sees. He has been in a lot of tough spots. He has ability and toughness, which is why he keeps getting the call. But some wear and tear is evident, especially when he goes a second inning.
|
|
| Springfieldcard: Jeff, Do the cardinals sign a big name middle infielder for next year or do we continue on with our current method of basically using platoon guys to occupy these spots? Is it just me or does Lopez seem to lack a little getty up when he plays defense? |
Jeff Gordon: That was his knock elsewhere. And that one play this weekend really bit him in the backside, although he did have to wait on Albert to cover.
And, yes, the Cards must find an impact middle infielder for next season. Their other offensive spots are set. |
|
| Francisco Prado: Gordo, thank you for taking my question/comment. How you've been? No matter what happens this year at OT with Pace and Barron the Rams should draft an offensive tackle in the first round. I liked the way the two rookie receivers looked on saturday. |
| Jeff Gordon: Agreed! Adam Goldberg is doing a fine job this year, but the team needs to select a cornerstone tackle. Greco, it turns out, is much better inside. |
|
Dan: Hey Jeff,
As big of a Cardinals fan as I am, I really don't see the likelihood of them running down the Brewers this year for the wildcard. Milwaukee has made a rather large investment (the acquisition of Sabathia for their #1 prospect and more), and it appears to me, has the far easier schedule the rest of the season. My skepticism derives from the Cardinals complete lack of ability to put together a good stretch of wins. They have been 14 games over several times this year, but for some reason, have not been able to get further over the hump. If they don't win this year, it won't be for lack of effort, but more likely to the fact that they just haven't been able to put all the pieces together at one time to make a considerable run. Be it bullpen failures, untimely hitting, poor record at Busch Stadium, or maybe we could even look at their 7-7 record so far this year against the Pirates, compared to Milwaukee's 8-1 record against the Bucs. Or their 4-9 performance in head-to-head matchups against the Brewers. Regardless of what happens this year, the future of Cardinal baseball looks promising. I hope ownership opens the purse strings a little more this off-season and maybe adds a few pieces to the puzzle that could help the Cards in 2009. |
Jeff Gordon: Your assessment is solid. And the ownership will spend on the '09 team, with all that dead money going away. Much of that will be reinvestment in current players, but the Cards will be able to sign/acquire some significant help.
They key is the development of young talent. That gives Mozeliak the flexibility he needs to act. |
|
redbirdswin: The last series vs. Milwaukee was a nightmare. Losing leads in the late innings was brutal to watch, especially against the Brewers. If I see Bill Hall launch another .200 average HR I'm gonna lose it.
I was nervous about the upcoming two game series, but I actually have more confidence now with the way that Wellemeyer and Waino have pitched lately (and we don't get to see Sabathia, always a good thing). So give us your bold prediction Gordo - can the Cards take these next 2 games and make this Wild Card chase really interesting? |
| Jeff Gordon: The way this team goes, look for one really encouraging win and one maddening loss. That seems to be a pattern. For the fans' sake, I hope I'm wrong. |
|
| redbirdswin: I noticed Rasmus has returned, rehabbing in the Gulf Coast League right now. What's his time table looking like towards a possible spot in St. Louis when rosters expand? |
Jeff Gordon: Interesting issue. It would be beneficial to expose him to the bigs, setting him up for next year . . . but then again, Barton and Mather have earned some ABs, too. If the Cards can't really use him, why make the moves necessary to get him here if he won't play much?
That said, I still expect him to emerge as the starting CF at some point next year. |
|
| HEG: Gordo it seems when Albert is hitting well Ludwick, Glaus, ect. go in the tank. I feel for the Cards to have a ligitimate chance and to put a win streak together the offense needs to hit collectively as a unit; also if the Cards go with 4 man rotation my observation would be to go w/o Lohse with the way he pitched in last 3 or 4 starts; also I think they need to rest Ankiel- he has not been the same since the injury; re; the Rams- Ty Hill needs to step-up his play at corner or he needs to start the season on the bench; when he came into the league he made predictions that he has not lived-up to; sort of like Jackson's prediction last year of 2500 total yards. Do you agree or disagree with statements? |
Jeff Gordon: Great point. Albert crushed the ball in late July, then tailed off for the bulk of three weeks, then crushed it again this weekend. But he was on his own Saturday, for instance, and it cost the Cards a critical game.
Where is the continuity? Why does this team have some huge outbursts . . . and then enough 1- or 2-run games to keep them from building a win streak? Weird. |
|
| Springfieldcard: Jeff, Making your best guess, Give me your batting order for opening day 2009 for our St. Louis cardinals. We won't hold you too it so go ahead and give it the old college try. |
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus' arrival may be delayed, due to his latest injury and inability to play in the Olympics. But let's get silly and try:
1-Rasmus, CF
2-Ludwick, RF
3-Albert, 1B
4-Glaus, 3B
5-Ankiel, LF
6-Molina, C
7-Renteria, SS
8-Carpenter, P
9-Miles, 2B
I can see the Cards making a move bigger than Edgar -- likely to exit Motown -- but predicting which move is impossible.
|
|
| Brian: How obvious is it that Marc Bulger is not happy with Drew Bennett's effort to catch some of the balls headed his way....Bennett can take a hike after what we saw from the young recievers on Saturday evening. Do you think that Saunders is going to stick with Bennett and Hall as 2 and 3 or will they get these young kids in the lineup early and often? |
| Jeff Gordon: Bring on the kids! |
|
| Darrell Ippensen: How many of our Farm teams are in contention for post-season play and will this affect or delay any September call ups ? |
| Jeff Gordon: Memphis is the team in questions and the Redbirds are nine games out. So there will be no restrictions. |
|
| Springfieldcard: September callups for this year, who do you think will be called up? Who do you think should be called up but will not? |
Jeff Gordon: Ryan has to come up. The team needs Phelps' power. Boggs has thrown well enough to provide an extra arm. Motte probably offers the same. Stavinoha has earned another ride. If Kinney is healthy, he needs to test himself.
That would be a pretty good group. I'd like to see Rasmus, but I can certainly see the logic in holding him back until there are actual ABs for him. I'd like to see Anderson and Freese, but, again, are there at bats for these fast trackers? And would there be relief innings for Todd?
The Cards could make a bunch of moves to get kids on their 40-man roster, but "Mo" has to be careful not to get ahead of himself. |
|
| Jon, Rams fan in Kentucky: Thanks for taking our questions Jeff. Although it was only one game, a nervous and mediocre one at that, Burton and Avery certainly showed promise both in speed, hand, continuity and a spark of life. Now my question is this, Should we reserve one of our 6 reciever positions for Drew Bennett, i mean in all seriousness it is my opinion our top six are Holt, Avery, Burton, Hall, Looker, Stanley, not necessarily in that order. Bennett seems slow, unsure of himself and the plays and really he seems useless to a WINNING team. Your thoughts on the six who should make the cut or if we will budge to 7, and if we should cut bennett or continue "project please workout we spent too much on you to fail." Thanks again Gordo! |
| Jeff Gordon: It's easier to keep six receivers with Saunders using three and four at a time, but it's tough to get to seven -- unless the team really believes Stanley can fill in at CB. That would be wild. |
|
rich: Jeff; Great article on the Cards woes this season. This team just can't seem to play consistently. One night they beat up on the Braves and score 18 runs and the next only 4. They lose to a woeful Pirate pitcher last Tuesday nite. They should have at least a 5 game, if not more, wining streak going. It's going to take more than these win 2 lose 1 series to get the wild card.
Thanks
Rich |
| Jeff Gordon: To get into postseason play in '08, the Cards will need to go on a big run. And if you can't take that run against Atlanta and Pittsburgh at home, then when will it come? |
|
Sir_Aaron: Dear Hockey Guy,
More than a week goes by, and still no further talk of Shanahan. Any thoughts as to whether the Blues make any roster moves at all before the season begins? I didn't foresee them going after any more free agents prior to the announcement about Shanahan.
Big A |
| Jeff Gordon: Shanny is a longshot. If the Rangers sign Sundin, the team may move Gomez to make the numbers work. Perhaps Shanny could fit in as well. He seems inclined to finish on the East Coast, so don't hold your breath. |
|
Sir_Aaron: Gordo,
Will this Cardinals team make the playoffs? If so, can they beat the Cubs in a 7 game series without home field advantage? |
| Jeff Gordon: No and no. |
|
ncdc: Hi Jeff,
Some post-game observations:
1. The two rookie WR's are definately the future of the Rams.
2. FB Russ Weil had a very, very good game- looks like a keeper.
3. Brock Berlin is one of the big surprises of the pre-season.
4. The defense looks, dare I say it, REALLY GOOD.
5. The O-line is much improved, making Bulger much improved.
If the third pre-season game is supposed to be the indicator for the team for the regular season, do we have reason to be very optimistic? And, can the Rams just take the hit and trade Drew Bennett? |
| Jeff Gordon: Trade Bennett? Where? Based on what? The guy looks done. It would be nice if he snapped out of this funk, but I'm not optimistic. |
|
Tackleberry: Remember when we used our 2nd round pick in the 2007 draft on Brian Leonard? Why did we do that again? Did we have a need for a player that isn't a tailback but isn't a fullback and really fills no true need on our team?
Also, when do we cut our losses with Bennett? |
| Jeff Gordon: Two games back, he looked pretty good until the shoulder got banged up. He could be a nice role player this year. But a second-rounder? Yeah, that looks more like a reach all the time. |
|
Bob: Jeff-
Your article today seemed really down on Drew Bennett, and it's hard to disagree with what he's shown in 23 games as a Ram. How do you explain his decline from a 60+ catch no.1 to what he shows today? Does he seem to understand his precarious situation? |
| Jeff Gordon: He got some nice dough to sign, so his situation isn't all that precarious. At his age, he should have plenty of football left. But does he? |
|
dcrams20: Gordo, what's your take on the Defense? I think our line will come around, the LB's will be ok if we avoid injuries, but the Secondary scares me. I'm usually optimistic, but given our first half schedule and some of the QB's we'll face, will the 'D' be able to 'bend but not break'?
Dan in Dodge City |
| Jeff Gordon: The front four looks good. Culberson may, in fact, be the answer in Chillar's spot. But like you, I'm not sold on the secondary. And if one of the LBs gets hurt, there could be big trouble. |
|
jeff: Thanks for doing this. I'm excited for the new season. I think the Blues will contend for a playoff spot and, eventually, barely make it in. However, most of the media coverage I have seen has the Blues as the worst team in the league.
My question is, have you gotten any sense yet of where this team itself thinks it should realistically be in the Western conference come playoff time? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Blues aren't the worst team in the league. Unless LA gets a goalie, the Kings will be in the Tavares sweepstakes. The Radulov situation hurts the Preds and the Wild could be rebuilding if Gaborik is dealt. But the Note has some heavy lifting to do just to stay in the hunt this year. |
|
Nathan_1974: A September call up for Brett "The Hitman, Walrus" Wallace He's raking at AA (OPS of 1.522 in a small sample) after having dominated low-A ball.
If it turns out that Anthony Reyes can pitch, how much damage does that do to Dave Duncan's reputation? Yesterday, Reyes cruised through 7 against the Rangers (a team with an incredibly potent offense), allowing just one run on four hits. His ERA with Cleveland is 2.22 over four starts.
Seems like the Cardinals have a surplus of outfielders heading into '09. Ankiel, Ludwick, Schumaker, Rasmus, Mather, Barton, Duncan. What to do, what do? |
Jeff Gordon: Duncan's reputation is secure. See Wellemeyer, Todd and Looper, Braden in the Cards rotation. I'm not at all surprised that Anthony is doing well in Cleveland. That move allowed him to shed the 2-14 of last year and move on.
Wallace will be here at some point next season. Playing where? Good question. As for the OF surplus, perhaps some of that could be spent to secure bullpen and shortstop help, unless the Cards use free agency to fill those needs. |
|
| chaos3430: So far WR Drew Bennett has looked terrible. He is slow, does not get good seperation, repeatedly drops passes, and runs wrong routes. When he left the game Saturday and the younger, faster, rookies came in, our offense went from ineffective to effective as fast as Avery runs. Do you see Linehan still starting him over the rookies, just because he is making more money than the rookies? To me you don't have a guy start because he is making starter money. We need the best players on the field, regardless of how much they make. |
| Jeff Gordon: Agreed. |
|
one_timer: Jeff, regarding the Blues....has there been any changes in Andy Murray's assistant coaching staff? Is Ray Bennett still going to run the PowerPlay? In other words, specifically what are the Blues doing to address the horrid PP production of past seasons? Is any effort being directed to solving this huge hole via a change in coaching strategy or is it going to be up to the players to figure it out.....again? I know the Blues PP was pretty easy for teams to defend last season with the lack of skilled dmen to QB the unit but even so I saw literally zero adjustments made by the coaching staff to mix things up and put players in better position to create scoring chances. Why Backes wasn't given more PP ice time and coached up to fill a "Holmstrom" type of role to set anchor in front of the goalie and create havoc I will never know. The kid loves contact and he has good hands. I am tired of seeing #7 float in and out of the crease unwilling or unable to pay the price physically to distract the goalie and create havoc in order to break down the opposition's box and create scoring chances. If I was Murray I would be fitting Backes with a new "flack-jacket" on the first day of training camp while informing him of his new role/opportunity.
GO BLUES!! |
Jeff Gordon: I talked to Boyes about the PP last week and he said what all the Blues say -- the Note just has to simplify things and shoot more. A better left point man would help, since putting Boyes or Stempniak there is risky. Pietrangelo will some day be on the first unit, but he may not be ready for the NHL this year. I agree that Backes can become an answer in front of the net, since he has the hands and toughness.
Kariya needs to curl off the boards and assert himself. Shoot! Score! At least get the puck on net and create rebounds. Also, E. Johnson should be more assertive on the point in Year 2. |
|
The Goat: Gordo,
Now that the men's basketball team won gold against Spain by only 11 points on Sunday doesn't everyone realize that we have the best athletes just not the smartest basketball players. Spain showed that if you screen and roll all game against the US you can be successful, why you ask? Because NBA players aren't used to playing defense for 4 quarters, only in the playoffs and that is still asking a lot from these guys.
I wouldn't blame some of the marquee players from defecting from the NBA to play in Europe, the basketball quality is right there, but oh yeah I forgot you would have to play defense.
Our guys just don't get it, when they do play smothering D they crush teams. The women were more impressive in their gold medal run than the men anyway, not that I watch that kind of stuff? Especially those uniforms the Australians were wearing?
Looking for the next men's Olympic team, criteria to match this year's team. No Center, can jump out of the gym, likes to ally-oop if at all possible, can't shoot a 3 or free throw consistently and doesn't like to play defense all game only when they have to!
It is also true what they say, white men can't jump, they can shoot free throws and 3's but you'd have to play in Europe with all the other fundamentally sound players to have an opportunity. Go Kurt Warner! |
Jeff Gordon: My only quarrel with the Redeem Team was that so many of the players were the same guy. But they made it work. So many of those guys are used to having the ball and running the show -- and yet they made it work.
Give 'em credit. They won the gold. They didn't crush Spain in the title game, but give the other side credit for making adjustments. As for your assessment of NBA defense, there are a LOT of guys playing in Europe because they couldn't defend man-to-man against the best players in world.
The real test: Play the NBA champs against the top Euro team for a real championship. That would be fun.
|
|
Greg: Joe,
What are the chances of Carpenter starting one of the weekend games against Houston? If they're good, who do you see as the odd man out in the rotation? |
| Jeff Gordon: Pineiro is out, for now, so I would assume that would be the case when Carpenter is good to go. |
|
| Sharon: Sharon; I can't believe the attendance at the Rams games. We are from Oaha and have not missed a game for nine years. If you are a real fan you stick with them no matter what. It looks like there are a lot of fair weather fans . GO RAMS! Thank you Jeff |
| Jeff Gordon: A 3-13 season, full price for fake games . . . I can't blame fans for skipping it. |
|
| redbirdswin: Is Barton likely to land on the DL after his oblique injury yesterday? If so, who gets the call from Memphis? |
| Jeff Gordon: The looming September roster expansion makes any OF injury a moot point. If there is an interim need, Stavinoha has been next in line. |
|
Mickey M.: Hey Gordo, always a pleasure chatting with you. my question is simple, Why did we pick up Bennett in free agency ? Wasn't he suppose to solve our problems in the Red Zone by adding a height advantage ? IMO he looks lethargic and confused; he has by far the worst 'Hands" ever seen by a WR for quite sometime.
Can we get rid of this guy or demote him to say maybe a 5th Receiver?
It seems to me he was slotted in the# 2 WR position by his salary level and not by merit or skill.
( not sure the 1st one got through so here it is again, sorry ! |
| Jeff Gordon: He was supposed to be a big target, a key red zone guy. It made sense at the time . . . |
|
ctramsfan: How are the ticket sales going right now? I hope the Dome can be a tough place to play once again this year. A tough, rowdy home crowd can only help this team and make it harder for their opponent.
Thanks for your time |
| Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but fans are still understandably skeptical. |
|
| Ron: With the play in the first 3 preseason games is Drew Bennett's play hurting him? Could be one of the cuts when it comes time for the cuts for one of the rookies Burton or Avery? It just looks like that Bennett and Marc Bulger are not in sync. |
| Jeff Gordon: Bennett has had a season-plus to get on the same page as Marc. It's on him. |
|
| Kiko: Thanks for answering our questions, I did not get a chance to watch the game but am happy about all that I've read about it. I wanted to know if Avery returned and punts/kicks that game and If so how did it go? |
| Jeff Gordon: Saw a little of Avery returning . . . and he didn't impress. But it's early. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Any word on how we're going to line up the rotation after the 2 off-days this week? Seems like Piniero, Lohse and Looper would fit in the HOU series and Wellemeyer, Wainwright and Piniero would take the ARI series. Any chance we strike gold and get Carpenter a start in HOU or ARI? |
| Jeff Gordon: Carpenter is still climbing the readiness ladder. With the off-days and so many guys throwing well, the Cards can afford to be careful with him. Rushing Carp back would be a huge mistake. His bullpen session Wednesday will tell us a lot more. He really hasn't extended himself yet. |
|
Gabriel 2 Snow: Hi Gordo, two subjects,
1. I keep seeing different reports about the length of Jacksons contract. Assuming the voidable years do indeed void, exactly what year would be his last as a Ram without a new deal?
2. How old is Brock Berlin, and did ANYONE anticipate him being the #3? |
Jeff Gordon: Berlin has kicking around for four years now, so he falls into the young journeyman candidate. Don't know if he is the QB of the future, but he helped his bid for No. 3.
As for Jackson, I believe 2011 could be the real last year of the contract. |
|
Bob: Jeff-
What's your assessment of the Linehan/Holt relationship? Do you see them talking regularly? Is there still a "chill" in their demeanor toward each other? |
| Jeff Gordon: Torry has no beef. You saw Bulger feed him early and often in the Saunders offense. That cures all. That and winning. |
|
| Brian J: Given the fact that Marc Bulger seems to get injured often and Trent Green's injury history, should we be concerned that the Rams haven't addressed the QB situation for the future, plus besides Holt - who will they throw passes to this year on a consistant basis? Don't say D.Bennett because that's not the answer. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Berlin-Gradkowski battle has been encouraging. You feel better about this year anyway. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
As a Cardinal fan in Milwaukee, I can't bear the thought of the Brewers edging the Cards out of the playoffs. I have to say, the folks up here are well aware of their ability to choke, but as a Cardinal fan, we are running out of chances to make them choke.
With an easy schedule, it seems we are relegated to hoping the Cubs mop the floor with them (and not with us) in the remaining 6 games they play each other.
As I see it, we need to win this week. Our only shot at catching them comes between Sept. 8-21. They play Cincy twice, 4 games in Philly and 3 against the Cubs. They struggle with the Reds...but we play Chicago (twice), PIT and CIN in that time span. How do you see this playing out? |
Jeff Gordon: These are huge games for Milwaukee, as you note. But this team tends mix great games with poor ones. So expecting them to win both games this week is asking a lot.
The Cards road is tough. I don't expect them to reach postseason play. |
|
| Jon: Hi, I'm curious as to why Trent Green has not played more this pre-season. I would think he needs playing time to develop a feel for the receivers as far as game timing. Are the Rams that worried about him getting another concussion? Thanks, Jon |
| Jeff Gordon: He threw it around pretty good in his impromptu appearance when Bulger got hurt. I'd like to seem him get a quarter just to be sure, but he has this offense down pat. |
|
| Tiger J.: What's up J-Gord, been awhile since I have asked not to be included on the See earlier post. But if Bentley is healthy why hasn't someone picked him up. I would absolutely love to have a player of his previous status on the squad. Heard anything about his health. Thanks and stay up. |
| Jeff Gordon: With Setterstrom done, Bentley could theoretically have more value. Right now, the Rams feel good about O-line as is. But if one more interior linemen get hurt, that could change. |
|
Blueshockey2005: Gordo
What do you see the Blues starting lines come opening night vs. Nashville? |
| Jeff Gordon: Boy . . . that's tough. I want to see if Berglund can really play center at this level, which would allow Tkachuk to play the wing all year. That would be big. If McDonald/Berglund/McClement could play down the middle, that would help. |
|
| jguev003: What are the chances of Tanard Davis #33 making the team? I read he had a sack and almost an INT against Baltimore. |
| Jeff Gordon: Howard Balzer's opinion (he's with me on the air at 590 the Fan) . . . he could be in the fight for the last secondary spot, especially with a few of the contestants injured. Bassey is likely to make the group, then it comes down to nine or 10 DBs and whether your guy is in that mix. |
|
| John: What's the status of our corners. Is Bartell still the nickel? |
| Jeff Gordon: If everybody is healthy, yes, he is the nickel. |
|
Jim Wigton: Gordo,
Why did Joel Pinerio get the save Friday night vs. Atl when the game ended 18-3? I can not find the answer no where online so please explain how a pitcher get credit for the save? thanks
Jim |
| Jeff Gordon: There is a clause that allows for a save when a pitcher throws that many innings while finishing the game. |
|
| azbirdies: I've got to think if Kinney has another good rehab outing, he'll be one of the September call ups. Assuming both he and Tyler Johnson make it back next year don't you think that will settle down our BP next year? Doesn't that make someone like Franklin expendable? |
| Jeff Gordon: Johnson is a big if for next year, so it's critical to add one or two quality lefties. Garcia is not a reliever. |
|
biggame1190: hey gordo
How are OJ Atogwe and Fakhir Brown doing are they close to being back or what. OJ is a big Key to this Defence and we need him from the start and Fakhir is a starter we cant aford to lose for too long either. Are they anywhere close to being back on the Field and will they be ready to play week 1 at Philly |
| Jeff Gordon: Philly is a ways off, but the fact these guys have missed so much time is a concern. How many times do we hear that a guy is possible . . . and he misses game after game after game. |
|
kaeagles: Hey Gordo,
I was excited to see Barton and Mather contribute to yesterday's victory the wat they did. While many expect Barton to be in Memphis next year, do you see the Cards making any off-season moves involving outfielders because of their considerable organization depth at that position?
Do guys like Joe Mather, Daryl Jones, and Jon Jay have a legit shot at staying with the Cards? |
| Jeff Gordon: Jones has really, REALLY come on this year. Jay has played great, but lacks the power or speed quotient to displace somebody here (unless players leave in trades.) Mather's versatility makes him a very valuable. |
|
jd_drew_07: Hey Gordo,
With an excess of $30 million coming off the books this winter, what do you envision the Cards spending all that money on?
Before you say pay increases for Pujols, Carp, etc -- let's remember that the payroll has not increased much since the new stadium.
I don't see them doing this, but they should make a run at Sabathia or Sheets with the excess money. They should still have money left over for a SS and bullpen help. |
| Jeff Gordon: They will pay for bullpen help, for sure. Shortstop, at some level, probably. Keeping one of their FA pitchers is quite possible. Sheets or Sabathia? Not going to spend that sort of jack for starting pitchers. |
|
kaeagles: Gordo,
The Eagles are banged up at WR position with Kevin Curtis out for the Rams vs Eagles game. What do you see the Rams doing well to win this game? |
| Jeff Gordon: Reggie Brown could miss, too, with a balky hamstring. That would make life much better for Jim Haslett's guys. |
|
09Champs: Gordo,
What FA signings will the Cards make this offseason? |
| Jeff Gordon: Fuentes has to be a top priority, if the money is not crazy. If the Cabrera bidding didn't get too crazy, a shortstop would come in real handy. |
|
Chris: Hi Jeff,
What happens to Troy Glaus after next season?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd try to extend him for two years this winter. Why not? He fits in and he produces. If he plays out to free agency, then see where the dollars are. The team could have options (Freese, Wallace) by then. |
|
Robert Mitchell: Hey Gordo,
Drew Bennet is turning out to be one of the biggest free agent busts in NFL history. I remember watching the Cardinals fiasco and laughing with my eight year old son as he let a perfect touchdown pass go right through his hands. My eight year old would definitely have caught that pass and many others that stone hands has dropped. he just doesnt' have the tools to succeed as a top flight NFL receiver. What are the chances the Rams release him and fast track avery and burton? Dane Looker could just as easily fill Bennet's role while the young guys catch up.. |
| Jeff Gordon: So far, it's hard to argue with that assessment . . . |
|
ncdc: Another one Jeff,
Many, many people on the forums bring up valid point here: Are the Rams going to keep and play Drew Bennett because he's owed so much money? Is that any way to run a professional football team?
Thanks for doing this chat. |
| Jeff Gordon: The team takes a big cap hit next year by whacking him now. That could buy him more time. But shouldn't the best players play? |
|
kaeagles: Unless Brett Wallace can play plus defense at 3rd I don't see where he fits on the roster. With so many OFers already available do you plug Wallace into LF? At best he would probably be a liability, at least at first. Besides, do you platoon plus OFers (Rasmus, Ankiel, Ludwick) to get Wallace ABs?
What do you think? |
| Jeff Gordon: It's crowded, for sure. But Wallace does offer insurance in case Albert's elbow finally blows and forces him to miss a chunk of time. |
|
| biggame1190: What are the Chances of the Rams signing Bentley and if soo do you think they would just give him the starting Center spot because even tho we need a extra O-Lineman it seems the Rams are trying to overtake Romberg at Center |
| Jeff Gordon: The guy hasn't played football in a couple of years. Unless the Rams get pounded by more injuries, I don't see where that makes sense. Right now they have ample depth with the two rookies backing up inside. |
|
| Jake: Gordo, I can't believe there haven't been any questions about the showdown at the Dome this weekend. What is your prediction? I have been reading that Illinois has been practicing using 6 DBs ala Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. If this is the case do you forsee a 100 yard night for Derrick Washington? |
Jeff Gordon: That is not a bad plan, since it would force the Tigers to pound the ball with some unproven linemen and backs. But if it doesn't work, the Illini would have to adapt -- which the Razorbacks never did.
I figure Mizzou will win, but Juice is mature enough to lead an upset if the Tigers suffer some offensive breakdowns and leave the door ajar. |
|
| JeffF: Hi Jeff. Thanks for the chats. Look into the future and tell me if Cards fans are going to spend another winter listening to AJ Burnett rumors. I recall how fixated TLR and Dunc were on him (although it could have been Jocketty too). What about someone like the Angel's Jon Garland- Durable, Duncan guy (heavy sinker, pitches to contact), and would really benefit from coming to the NL? What say you? |
| Jeff Gordon: Trouble is, he would want outrageous money. I'd rather see them keep what they have and let Carpenter and Wainwright lead the rotation next year. Spend the money on an impact middle infielder and lefty bullpen help. |
|
Let's go Blues: Hey Gordo,
How seriously do you take the Blues' interest in Shanny. I would like to think that they will make a serious attempt to sign him (most of his contract will pay itself). Even with KT, I think Shanny adds a dimension to the team that isn't currently there. Also, if the NYRs don't make an effort to resign him, how seriously do you think he will take returning to STL?
How good does the Rolen/Glaus trade look? I think Mo should get a lot more credit on this one. Cards look like a pretty good team with Waino and Carp back in the fold. If everyone stays healthy the rest of the way, it may be too bad there aren't more games left in the season.... |
| Jeff Gordon: The Blues would love to get Shan the Man, but it doesn't appear he shares that interest. And you're right about the Cards -- they may not get to (sort of) full strength until it's too late. |
|
| rickmfromnj: Gordo-- Do you think Cardinals management seriously has an interest in AJ Burnett ? Has this guy ever put together a full season (this one's not over yet)??? Why are they so reluctant to give the ball to a young prospect ? thanks-and keep those columns coming-they're great |
| Jeff Gordon: Again, the Cards love the guy . . . but the Cards aren't philosophically inclined to spend massive dollars on free-agent starting pitching. It's too risky. |
|
| Columbia_Ram: I am sure you will get this question most frequently. What are the pros and cons of letting Bennett go? How would it affect the cap? If we do, who do you see making the roster as the other wide out? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see Stanley make the roster, one way or another. But bumping Bennett, as much as fans want it, would be hard to do, for a lot of reasons. |
|
CardsFanNY: Gordo--Love the chats! Thanks for your time.
To what extent do you think Lohse's recent woes are attributable to being a lower-end-of-the-order pitcher being matched up with other teams' aces? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is a solid pitcher, but the last couple of outings have been more typical of his career. He pitched OK, but not quite well enough to win. I would try to re-sign him, though, because is a good, durable hurler who gives his team a chance to win most games. |
|
Adam (Apstl187): Hey Jeff,
Long time reader here originally from Ballwin and live in Peoria now where Rams fans are few and far between. Anyways now that we got to see our Rookie recievers and they performed well is Dante Hall pretty much out as the number 3 reciever? Ide hope so. How about Drew (I cant catch a ball because I dont want to get hit) Bennett. I hope he wasnt suppose to help us get over Ike, This guy is a joke. Is there any trade scenario Rams can seek for this Bum. Looker has Impressed.
Man would I like to see
Holt Bruce Avery Burton and Looker as our reciever, what was this front office thinking? |
| Jeff Gordon: Again, why would anybody trade for this guy. |
|
Aaron: Gordo,
Two quick questions:
1. Who is the better pitcher: Dan Haren or Adam Wainwright?
2. Given the current & future glut of outfielders, which outfielders will be playing for another organization next season?
Thank you. |
Jeff Gordon: Haren is ahead of Wainwright. Could Adam be as good as Danny someday? Absolutely.
As for the OFs, it's anybody's guess how it plays out. How do other teams value these guys? What would they give up to get one of them? It will be interesting. |

| Harold: What 2B/SS will be likely in a trade for the Cards? I see Ankiel being expendable to the extent of a great return at a middle infield position. Is it crazy to think that the Cards could put togather a package including Ankiel, another promosing outfielder, and maybe a mid-tier pitching prospect to land Ian Kinsler. The Rangers seem to be in a buy now win now mode for 2009. Ankiel could really help them in the outfield with Hamilton and Bradley. Can the Cards get Furcal in Free Agency? What do you think? |
Jeff Gordon: Furcal is interesting, but his age/injury factor is scary. Nice bat though. Ankiel would have value IF he could sign a long-term deal. If he is headed to free agency, he has little value.
Kinsler is a nice target, but it would take a ton. OFs are easier to find than impact middle infielders. |

| Jeff Wade: Went to the Rams game Saturday night as I am no longer able to give my preseason tickets away. I liked a lot of what I saw. What is the deal with the concessions? You come to expect high prices, slow service but everything you get for the last few years is cold or stale(pretzels, hot dogs etc.) I can remember the first year the dome opened the Post-Dispatch ran a big story on the state of the art food service the dome would supply. |
Jeff Gordon: That's an issue outside the control of the Rams, but it is an issue. Compare the dome to the new Busch.
That appears to be all for this week. Thanks! |
