Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

I know it's just the preseason, but I have to say, I was incredibly dissapointed by the execution of the pass defense, but was even more discouraged by the playcalling itsef. I thought we were supposed to finally be an aggressive, attacking defense, but if I didn't know any better, I would have said that Jim Haslett was still stalking the sidelines- getting all fiery with his bland, passive playcalling. I swear, that first play of Mark Sanchez's career, when he was backed up on his own 7 yd line and we elected not to put any pressure on him whatsoever, which effectively allowed him the comfort and time to complete a 50 yd pass was a Jim Haslett special. I think Haz actually got that defense copyrighted. I really hope Fajole isn't stupid enough to believe the Rams can get effective pressure with just the front four because as they showed very well last night and through the past 2 seasons, they can not. I'm praying to the angry Marmie gods that last night was not an omen of things to come.
Jeff Gordon: Some coaches, like Jeff Fisher, empty the playbook in preseason openers. I think that's pretty silly, since all these games are on tape. I'll reserve playcalling judgment until the real games start. I trust that Spags will be aggressive this year.

Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

When should we expect the Rams first round of cuts and after the first game, would you venture who some of those might be?
Jeff Gordon: As Spagnuolo said, the tough decisions won't come for a few weeks still. There are a lot of street free agents who are on the team solely to facilitate practice.

Injuries could impact all this. With Avery out and now Foster and Carter hobbled, the depth WRs will get an extra long look. Berlin getting dinged allowed Null more time to show himself. At safety, David Roach had a tough first preseason game, but the lack of healthy depth could help him stick a while longer. Carriker missing time at DT helps some of the unknowns, too.

Unless a spate of injuries hit this team, there aren't a whole lot of jobs available to the longshots.

Lawarence Marmie: Did anyone ever show Kenneth Darby how to block?
Jeff Gordon: The coaches like his blitz pick-ups in practice, but this is why they play preseason games. Gado, Pittman and Ogbonnaya all helped themselves in the Meadowlands, by contrast.

Lawarence Marmie: I kind of liked the way Laurent Robinson played- any chance he has of being the #1 since Avery is out a while?
Jeff Gordon: He figured to start across from Avery, based on the pre-camp assessment. This game helped that campaign. Devaney made the move to get him -- so this will be another test of his acumen. Devaney viewed him as a starter-type when he made the move.

Brianbase: What are your thoughts so far on Long's progress as last year's 1st round pick? He seems very "quiet" when he plays. Does he have the size to be effective?
Thank You!
Jeff Gordon: More so than Grant Wistrom, yes. He'll never be as flashy as Little, who has freakish athletic ability, but he should be productive as any every down DE. I like the front four when Hall moves inside on obvious passing downs.

Lawarence Marmie: For the starters, who on the line kept messing up the blitz pick ups and letting the Jets have a ton of shots at Marc? I know Darby missed some, but it couldn't have all been his responsibility.
Jeff Gordon: You can't blame Smith. The kid didn't come in until all that went down. Goldberg played at right tackle. As you noted, Darby played plenty after Jackson's cameo. Schuening came in for Bell at left guard when Bell got dinged. So the Rams didn't have their "A" team in for a chunk of that, but still . . .

Spags was none too pleased with this aspect of the game, as you would expect.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

Please tell me there will be some backlash for the Red Sox throwing twice at Kinsler's head on Saturday, with one of them hitting him. Thompson threw one pitch upstairs "near" Wright's head and got suspended. If nothing is done, that is a complete double-standard.
Jeff Gordon: Kinsler went on record saying that he didn't think it was deliberate. So we'll see. The circumstances were fishy, though.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

As a Rick "Young Musial" Ankiel supporter, how do you judge his future in St. Louis? He's a platoon player right now, who's numbers don't warrant any sort of aggressive offer from the Cards. I'm sure if LaRussa returns he will want Ankiel back, but at what point do you just move on? Don't misunderstand me, if he accepts a club-friendly contract he's worth the risk. That being said, pursuit of the club's priorities (Holliday/DeRosa/the rotation) shouldn't be compromised to retain Ankiel.
Jeff Gordon: Even if the Cards lose Holliday, the team could keep DeRosa as a second baseman (with Freese starting), move Skip to the outfield and be set. Or the team could put Lugo at second, move Skip to the outfield and be set. Rick's offensive struggle this year precludes him returning as anything more than a moderately priced fourth outfielder. Young Musial cost himself a lot of jack.

CP: Couple questions on two Cardinal prospects:

1. Allen Craig -- Does he get a late-season call-up? Does he have a future with the organization and at what position? This guy is hitting a ton.

2. Adam Ottavino -- After a dreadful start to the season, he has been pretty solid in the second half. Does he have a future with the organization?
Jeff Gordon: Craig hit very well in the spring, so he is on the radar screen. But if the Cards can't move Glaus -- and if Troy can play -- he might take a bench spot due to that big contract. Also, Tyler Greene is hitting well enough to return. And Nick Stavinoha did a pretty good job as a pinch-hitter earlier this year. Also, David Freese could return to the big leagues, based on his hitting and his good glove at 3B. So it's tough for Craig.

Ottavino is still in the mix, but he will need a shutdown stretch at Memphis to get serious consideration at some point next year. Look for Garcia to shoot past him again, health permitting. P.J. Walters is still ahead of him as well.

bohinky: The 2004 Cards team was the best I ever saw play. 105 wins!!! But, I think this latest 2009 edition is better because the starting pitching is better. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Offensively, yes, this team will stand as one of the best Cards groups ever. There are three proven hitters on the bench every game, plus a good-hitting back-up catcher. But . . . the No. 4 and No. 5 rotation slots are still concerns and the team still needs another RH relief pitcher.

Kyle: Gordo, I'm disappointed in you and the rest the Cards' beat writers. In the latest watercooler, everyone except for Derrick Goold wrote off the Cubbies and crowned the Cards as the division winners. You yourself said "I don’t think it is too soon to dismiss the Small Bears." For all of their troubles this year, they're still 5 games over .500 (they've also played 4 fewer games this year than the Cards) and are only 5 games back in the division. They also have the 5th best team ERA in the majors at 3.92 (the Cards are 4th, at 3.75). Ted Lilly, Carlos Zambrano, and Aramis Ramirez are all expected to come back from the DL. Obviously if they don't it's a different question, but haven't you seen enough baseball to know that the Cubs are absolutely still in the division race?
Jeff Gordon: Unfortunately, the Cubs can't shake the injury bug -- and the Cards will continue to post a high winning percentage with this lineup. Chicago is playing catch up and the Cards have a favorable schedule to finish the year.

Rich: Greetings Gordo,

Overall the Rams had a good outing this past Saturday against the Jets.

However, there seems to have been some issues with DBs - particularly at Safety with the top 2 back ups involved in costly gaffes.

Also, 2 more WRs are down for at least a couple weeks apeice.

Do you see the Rams looking to fortify either of these areas or stand pat for now?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: For the moment, Spagnuolo is still with the group he has. But one more injury at WR will force his hand. Foster's ankle injury is a huge blow, since that will cost him valuable developmental time. With Avery out, he could have really established himself.

Spags could like to keep a combo CB/S on his 53-man roster, so he may not be as concerned about his safety depth. He has a lot of CBs. Johnson had a big gaffe in the game, but he is a veteran and a valued part of the special teams.

sjd: Gordo---Did Carpenter go to LA on Sat. for his Monday start? Do Cards always sen there pitchers ahead of the team when traveling to a visiting park?
Jeff Gordon: That is often the case, particularly if the team has a night game and will be traveling late at night to the next city.

DesignatedHomer: How great is it to watch the Cardinals right now?
Jeff Gordon: This team is outhitting some of its problems. Ideally, the team will fix some of the problems so it can avoid a downturn if the bats got quiet.

DesignatedHomer: Hey Gordo,

What's the organization's take on Dennys Reyes these days? Seems like he's been doing a fair amount of stumbling lately.
Jeff Gordon: He lacks his usual command -- and he has lacked it much of the year. This is not what they were hoping for when the club signed him during the spring. On the positive side, Miller has taken on a bigger-than-expected role of late.

DesignatedHomer: Hey Gordo,

Any word on whether Wellemeyer's going to make some rehab starts at AAA? This DL stint could be a blessing in disguise for the Cardinals--a chance to give Welley the 4,000th chance that Duncan and TLR insist on while not having to stake a game on it. Thanks as always for taking our questions!
Jeff Gordon: I believe that was the point of shutting him down. He has resumed throwing. The team can have him rebuild his strength -- and work on his mechanics some more -- at the minor league level. This would be a more constructive approach than forcing him to regroup against big league hitters.

Sean B: Is it safe to say Rasmus is the starting centerfielder for the rest of the year and Ankiel will just see spot starts? I think Colby's speed adds a much needed dimension to the lineup in front of Albert and Holliday. (Plus the walk-off HR's are nice)
Jeff Gordon: If Colby's strength is back, I agree. He has shown better discipline at the plate. He is swinging at better pitches. This has been a nice turnaround. He is also a strong defender and, like you say, his speed in the No. 2 slot is appealing.

DesignatedHomer: Hey Gordo,

What's your over/under on landing Shelby Miller today? Assuming we do, what's the soonest you think we might see him in the show? Thanks for taking all the questions!
Jeff Gordon: It sounds like the deal will happen. Both sides are motivated to make it work. Since Shelby wouldn't pitch competitively this season, it would take 3-4 years to move him up the trail. Can he stay healthy? Can he get stronger as he fills out?

Sean B: What do you think the biggest difference from last year's team and this year's team is? I personally think Franklin is our saving grace this year. We lead the league in blown saves last year but Franklin is as solid as anyone in 09'.
Jeff Gordon: That, plus the team has Carpenter and Wainwright healthy. Having two Cy Young candidates at the top of the rotation makes life much easier. All the offensive additions were nice, but this team was in the hunt without Holliday, DeRosa and Lugo because of the top starting pitchers and the closer.

Sean B: I keep hearing S3.25M will get the job done for Miller, I'm assuming that deal will get done before the deadline? With potentially getting Miller and Wagner Mateo that begs the question, who would you rather have Miller and Mateo or Wallace and Mortensen? You could also add Holliday or 2 first round pick to the equation with Miller and Mateo.
Jeff Gordon: Ideally you stockpile all kinds of talent. It's not either or. After losing Wallace and Mortensen, the Cards must replace them by using the two compensatory picks if the team loses Holliday.

If the team somehow keeps Holliday, fans will forget all about Wallace. But keeping Wallace will force the team to cut elsewhere, which, again, is why you want to stockpile talent.

Mateo and Miller are important because they seem to have impact talent and the potential to rise quickly. Much of what is left in the minor league system right now is depth-quality talent. Depth is good as we saw this year, when the Hoffpauirs and Robinsons helped in a pinch. But developing impact players like Rasmus is where it is at.

HD2003100th: This team has alot of potential. The fans, writers and other teams see it. If this team cannot live up to it, say a 9-21-7 start to the season, how safe is Andy Murrays job? I do like his approach at times but it seems he lacks in a few areas.
Jeff Gordon: Such a poor start would be shocking, given the way the team came together during the second half of last season. This team overcame injuries by giving key youngsters more responsibility and by finding some new supporting cast members.

That team returns, with the addition of Kariya, Johnson and Conklin. It's fair to expect big things.

Jerry from Memphis: Who, in your opinion, will be our starting shortstop in 2010? Ryan has been a strong defender at short (he was a strong defender when he played here in Memphis too and so is my personal favorite). Tyler Greene has also looked good here this season and seems to have a bit more power in his bat than Brendan Ryan. We also have some others a bit further down in the organization (Kozma, Solano) but I am assuming they will have no shot at the majors next season.
Jeff Gordon: Ryan has earned the job with his remarkable defense and improved offense. He is a more mature hitter now. With Lugo on board for free next season, to back up at short and play 2B against LH starters, that limits T. Greene a bit. Look for Freese to get a crack at third base, since the Cards will be hard-pressed to keep DeRosa AND Holliday.

Chris Johnson: This lignup has shown time and time again they do NOT give up! The offense is strong top to bottom, the starting rotation has a strong 4 when Lohse is on, we have a strong stopper in Franklin. Our righthanded relief, however, could use another arm. Is anyone on the radar right now, or is Mo going to surprise us all again.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards would like to get stronger there. The team has campaigned Smoltz hard. Failing that addition, Mozeliak would keep shopping -- but the options aren't great. Other teams are looking for help and willing to make waiver claims. That makes dealing pitchers difficult.

Jerry from Memphis: Who do you believe will be the Cards starting second baseman in 2010? I have been surprised at how well Schu has done (though he is a favorite of mine having watched him play the outfield here in Memphis). However, we also have Descalso here as well as Hoffpaur. So, who, in your opinion gets the job?
Jeff Gordon: It is Skip's job. But . . . if Holliday and Ankiel leave, he could move to left field and allow DeRosa to play second (if he signs) and Freese to play third. Or Lugo could start at second base in some scenario. Hoffpauir is on the outside looking in, barring major shuffling.

HEG: Gordo the Cards are on a good roll now & they need to keep up this pace thru August because Sept. schedule will be more challenging; everything seems to be breaking in their favor at this time; but their weak link at this point would be the right handed middle relief and I do not believe the 2 pitchers in this capacity can be trusted down the stretch to get the job done; but in the same token I do not believe Smoltz could help the ball club in this capacity; he also struggles vs. left handed batters and he seems to have hit the wall in his career; the weak link in the starting rotation at this time would be Lohse; 2 things that irritates me concerning pitchers is for a reliever to come into the game & start walking batters and for a starter to go out in an inning after the offense has tied or gone ahead and the starter gives it up the next inning; the cards seem to be in good shape now but they would need to win 4 of the 7 games on the west coast; anything beyond that would be great. Re; Mizzou's football they will probably struggle with the influx of new position players. I believe 7 wins would be a realistic # for them this year. Re; the Rams they seem to be on the right track but I believe about 6 wins would be realistic for them this year. Does any of the above make any sense?
Jeff Gordon: Six is my over-over for the Rams. I think eight wins would be good for Mizzou, although my Tiger friends insist that nine victories are possible.

The Cards' weaknesses are well known, as you stated. Right now they are able to out-hit their shortcomings.

Kyle: Andy Van Slyke was the previous Rookie to hit a walk off Home Run, 1984 I believe. Prior to Rasmus, do you know the last Rookie to hit 2 walk offs in one year?
Jeff Gordon: That's an excellent question -- one I cannot answer.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

A lot of what I've read regarding the sacks, recorded against the first unit on Friday, highlights missteps by blockers. I realize there were some whiffs and missed assignments, but Bulger NEVER MOVES!!!!! The guy's feet are like anchors caked in cement. Step-up, side-step, scramble, get rid of the rock! On the first sack McMichael had come out of his break on the delay/scrape route, but it was almost as if Bulger had just resigned himself to the sack.
Jeff Gordon: That's a fair point, because this offense requires the QB to move around the pocket to buy some time against certain defenses. Marc needs to be more nimble to make this work.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

I think it is safe to say that Allen Craig and Jon Jay are completely blocked in our system. Craig might put on a Cardinal uniform and grab 10-15 AB's in September, but other than that, I don't think he has a promising future here...especially with Freese and Mather eventually returning to form.

Are we unwilling to move these guys or are teams unwilling to take them? I can't believe Craig won't net us the bullpen arm we desperately need.

Does Mo see too much risk and little reward in moving these "depth" guys? I understand Craig would be a nice guy to call up should we experience an injury or need a solid bat for the bench...
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak has no hesitation to trade prospects, as we've seen. And, yes, the Cards have built a surplus of position players. If another teams wants Craig or Jay and gets a worthy reliever through waivers to trade, Mo would have no trouble making that deal.

SouthernIllinoisBoy: Based on what I'd read earlier, I thought Troy Glaus was effectively done this season and we'd seen the last of him playing in St. Louis. Now, based on what I read, I'm not sure what his status is. So here's a two-part question for you: What's the latest report on Troy Glaus? With two weeks left to be eligible for the playoff roster, what are the chances (as of today) he will be healthy enough and have his swing in major league shape to be in St. Louis by Sept. 1 and potentially play a Matt Stairs-type of pinch-hitting role should the team make the playoffs?
Jeff Gordon: He is playing third base at Memphis, which is a positive step. Other teams are looking for bats and a couple of strong weeks at Memphis could make Glaus marketable.

And if nobody wants him, the Cards could use him to add even more power come September. Either way, his sudden ability to play third is good news for the Cards.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

Closer talk was the craze of the 2008-2009 offseason. Motte, Perez, Kinney, Franklin, McClellan, Fuentes, K-Rod, etc. etc...

What does Franklin's emergence mean to the 2010 bullpen? A lot of people think we are merely catching lightning in a bottle and that he will revert back to his career averages at some point.

I am from the school of Billy Beane in the 9th inning...you don't spend 10-15% of your payroll on a 3-out guy.

However, it is fair to say we will have fewer options for the 2010 pen. Kinney is out. Perez and Todd are gone. Samuel can't throw strikes. Motte may never get there...I just don't see him developing 2 more pitches by April. Franklin would look fine in the 9th, but even better in the 8th because of his ability to stretch himself for multiple outs. If we can find a competent closer to cover the 9th, you can use specialty guys for the 6th and early 7th innings, and call Franklin in to finish the 7th and handle the 8th.

I know Eduardo Sanchez is the sexy pick right now, but he is young and we all know the Cards like calling guys up when they are 22-25. How do you see this shaking out?
Jeff Gordon: Franklin will remain the closer until further notice. The Cards do need to add another RH set-up guy, be it for the stretch run this year or for next season. Mozeliak will have to address the exit of Perez and Todd one way or another. Salas, Samuel, Sanchez -- not sure there is an answer there, but it is nice to have the arms.

Josie Wales: Hiyo there Mr. Gordo...
Do you see TLR and Duncan ever separating? Let's say Tony wants to retire..would Dunc stay? I can't imagine one without the other.
Thanks for taking our calls.
Jeff Gordon: I could see Duncan retiring and Tony staying on. Dave was pretty sour about the rough ride Chris got. I don't see TLR leaving this team as long as Albert is here. That gives him two more years.

Eric Dickerson: GORDO,
It's obvious we have no one in the backfield that can block on a pass play or pick up the blitzer. Do you think Jackson will ever sacrifice himself and be a team player or will he follow in Darby's footsteps and let Bulger just get hammered on pass plays?
What was Bulger trying to prove staying in there past the first series, that he can take a beating?
It was a welcome change to see the defense more agressive when tackling.
In my mind though the player that stood out the most was Sanchez.
Jeff Gordon: Blitz pick-up is a big focal point this week in practice, as reported elsewhere on STLToday.com. What is disappointing is that this team knew the Jets would blitz like crazy with Ryan at the helm -- and yet the team seem unprepared for it.

This puts a lot of focus on this Week 2 of the preseason. Which players will clean up their play?

Josie Wales: Jeff,
In your opinion, how much of TLR's success is due to his relationship and long association with Dave Duncan?
I kind of see Tony as a .500 manager elevatated to HOF consideration because of Duncan's success with the pitching staffs. Am I way off base?
Enjoy your work. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Duncan is a big part of that, for sure. But give TLR credit for helping Duncan develop into a great pitching coach. They work very closely. Separating Duncan's success from TLR is also difficult.

The thing that kills most teams in pitching breakdowns, through injury and plain failure. Duncan has a gift for minimizing the damage when things go bad and maximizing performance when things are going well.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

Help me understand something. Everybody keeps saying that Shelby Miller, if signed, will immediately become our number 1 prospect. I understand high-ceiling, young pitching is at a premium. But if the guy hasn't thrown a professional pitch, or even made it out of rookie ball yet, how can we seriously call him our #1 guy? I know we lost a lot of young talent in the DeRosa and Holliday deals, but still...

Daryl Jones, Lance Lynn, Jaime Garcia and Eduardo Sanchez are more valuable (in my eyes) than Shelby Miller. I hope I change my tune by next summer...
Jeff Gordon: Garcia is a high-ceiling guy. Maybe Sanchez is too. Jones could be a very nice player, since he has all the rools. But if Miller adds mph as his matures, he could become the whole package like a Wainwright.

In Miller's case, it is just a projection based on where he is at this age and what his body is likely to become.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

What will it take for Chris Carpenter or Adam Wainwright to dethrone Lincecum and win the NL CY Young?

Wainwright will have the wins and workhorse innings but not the ERA or K's.

Carpenter would be an impressive pick because he will likely have similar win and loss totals as Lincecum/Haren/Wainwright/Cain but he will have missed over a month of baseball.

In your opinion, do you think missing a month and still putting up nice win and ERA numbers will be helpful, or do you think that the voters will put too much emphasis on innings pitched, starts made and strikeout totals?
Jeff Gordon: Lincecum has the huge strikeout total. He also pitching without much offensive support. That will sway voters if his ERA is similar to Carpenter's ERA at the end of the year. Carp can overcome his start total by winning games. An impressive W-L and impressive ERA will go a long way if Tim starts getting beat up a bit.

ctramsfan: Jeff, are the Rams looking to sign a wide receiver now that 2 more have gone down?

Thanks for your time

John
Jeff Gordon: So far, no. The Rams don't want to cut one of the injured guys to add somebody new and nobody is hurt enough to injure for the season. But the depth is perilously thin. In camp practices, it is beginning to become an issue.

Alex Alvidrez: Wow, the TD toss by Null looked like a veteren throw. We may have found a diamond in the ruff.........
Jeff Gordon: So far, so good, He made a surprisingly quick adjustment from a smaller college spread offense to a NFL West Coast scheme. That adjustment allowed his talent to show.

bjsgolf: Gordo,
I am not hearing much about John Greco and when Bell was hurt, he was not the one to replace him. Please don't tell me we have another 3rd round bust.
Jeff Gordon: Based on what Greco did last year, I'd be surprised if that is the case. He has the same O-Line coach, so he should be in good stead. It was good to see Schuening get a look at LG, since he, too, is a prospect. And it is only natural to use Setterstrom there as the team finalizes its middle OL depth. His ability to play guard and center makes him a strong bet to make the team, health permitting.

Middle OL depth is one of the few really deep spots on this team.

norman: Will T.L.R. be back next year?
Jeff Gordon: With Pujols back, Rasmus developing, Ryan and Molina becoming standouts, Wainwright, Carpenter and Franklin all on board to anchor the pitching . . . yeah, he'll be back, unless the Cards do something special and he decides to go out on a high note.

He has shown no outward signs of wanting to retire altogether.

Guard: Hi Gordo,

First pre-season game under our belt, and we got a win. That's a positive for the new regime. However, looks like we still have some of the same old issues. 3 sacks of our starting QB in our first 3 drives. Pass protection must be a concern for this new coaching staff. So what needs to be fixed? QB recognition of where the pressure is coming from, and getting the ball out quicker? Improved pass protection by the O-Line? Better blitz pickup by our TE, FB, RB corps? Better Offensive scheme and disguise of pass plays by our OC? WR blitz recognition and breaking off routes? Where does the most work need to be done? Thanks. Guard
Jeff Gordon: As broken down by Jim Thomas today, one was Steven Jackson's fault (late adjustment), one was on Bulger (held ball too long) and one was on Darby (late adjustment).

I found it puzzling that the Rams were surprised by the extensive blitzing. As I wrote before the game, Ryan wanted to make a statement. Of course he was going to blitz on his home field to make a positive impression on the New York fans and media. Why wouldn't he?

That the Rams seemed unprepared for that was odd.

Travis: Three quick questions.

I read that the Shelby Miller pick was a "steal" for the Cardinals. What exactly does that mean? Are we talking top 25 MLB prospect? Top 10?

Any chance the Cardinals would bring Smoltz in as a number five starter and move him to the bullpen if that doesn't work out, or would they only be interested in him as a bullpen arm?

What good is the baseball draft if the worst team can't afford to sign the best player, or even worse, completely pass up the best player because they know they can't afford him?
Jeff Gordon: The draft generally works. Once in a while a pitcher rolls the dice and tries to make a huge score, but that will backfire as often as it works. Boras is trying to explore the Nationals predicament with his once-in-a-decade prospect and essentially change the rules. Washington is better off passing on this kid, taking the compensatory pick next year and spend the millions for proven pitching help for next season.

The Cards are making a hard push for Smoltz, but John controls his fate. The Dodgers are also pushing hard, among others.

Miller is probably a top 5 talent in that draft. He fell to 19 because he wanted a lot of money. The Cards, lacking high-ceiling starting pitching prospects, seem willing to pay up.

Guard: Gordo,

Of all of the returning players, who do you feel looks like they are ready to make the biggest leap this year for the Rams? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I'd bet on Incognito. He is set up to succeed, placed between two physical, hard-working players with some leadership ability. If Richie more or less controls himself, he could have a huge year as a run blocker.

tone-dog: Jeff: Does Mo have a shot at "Executive of the Year"?
Jeff Gordon: He made some great trade deadline moves, but he also inherited La Russa/Duncan Pujols, Carpenter, Wainwright, Molina, et al. By comparison, Dodgers GM had to overhaul that operation, starting with Joe Torre as manager.

tone-dog: Jeff: Does Smoltz come with a condition he is signed for next year? Also, Fox Sports has Heath Bell on waivers with the Cardinals as major players.
Any truth to that? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the Cards would make every effort to get Bell, for obvious reasons. This team has position prospects to move, but not much pitching left.

The Cards wouldn't mind taking Smoltz for another year if his deal was incentive-based. I don't see John hanging on just to pitch if it became obvious that he couldn't get it done any more.

Sam Dasios: Gordo, what's up. Do you think Bulger is actually going to bounce back this year, given how weakened our WR corps is?
Jeff Gordon: Bounce back? Somewhat. This will be a run-first offense that will limit the sort of blitz vulnerability you saw against the Jets. In a real game, blitzing the Rams will be tougher with Jackson running 25 times.

The overall receiving corps could be better this year, IF Avery returns and IF Burton stays healthy and IF McMichael stays healthy. Holt wasn't enthused last year and Avery and Burton both made rookie mistakes in a complicated offense.

dale: have you heard anything about any bullpen help, or are they going to wait on wellemeyer to come off the diaabled list.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards look for help every day. But, again, getting good pitchers through waivers is tough for teams trying to sell off talent.

ramboy81: hey gordo . its time for the rams to go get roscoe parrish now. also they need to look at qb josh johnson from tampa bay . go rams , what do you think gordo.
Jeff Gordon: The Bills may want to move Parrish's contract at some point, yes. But would the Rams want to deal a pick to make a late WR addition when it believes in Robinson, likes Curry as at least a stopgap and believes that Avery/Burton/Foster/Stanley offer potential? It would take additional injuries.

Ray Lankford: Gordo:
Who would you rather pitch to tonight if you are the Dodgers? Albert Pujols or Matt Holliday? I would argue you would pitch to Pujols to avoid Holliday. Depending on Pujols mental toughness, this feeling could make him feel inferior to Holliday even though he is the best player on the planet. How is the relationship between Holliday and Pujols? I notice a louder applause when holliday comes to the plate now. Do you think this is affecting AP's performance.
Jeff Gordon: Albert is not fragile. The more good players the team surrounds him with the better. Holliday started with a bang with the Cardinals, but he has hardly supplanted Pujols as the most dangerous hitter on the team.

ramsrevolution: Jeff,
Do you think there is any chance Donnie Avery will lend a hand on special teams this year? He would seem like an exciting kick off man as he surely has speed. I am curious to see your special teams projections.

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The return jobs are up for grabs, although Gado made a big move in Week 1 and Stanley will still get every chance. Avery is in the mix, but his down time with the injury will force the Rams to look at everybody else.

ramsrevolution: Jeff,
Do you think that Tye Hill has what it takes to be a legitimate starter in the NFL. He has a wonder of a vertical leap and top end speed. But his lack of size and ball awareness concerns me. After a few years in the league I would think this year might be a big one for him, especially if Spags is trying to get bigger.
Jeff Gordon: A lot goes into playing cornerback, but it starts with actually being able to cover somebody. He can't gamble and lose, for instance. He has to read the route running. He seemed to lose his confidence, which is deadly for CBs.

erich_stlmo@yahoo.com: Hey Gordo how are you today? Hey just got a few questions regarding Michael Vick and the Rams interest. I was wondering did the Rams have any interest at all or at least discuss about picking him up? I know they were always denying any interest but so did the Eagles and they turned around and signed him. Now I don't know too much about the Rams cap situation but the deal that Vick got from the Eagles, if the Rams where interested could they have afford to make the same deal as far as the contract goes. Also it seems like a lot of you and your collegues at the Post Dispatch where against the Rams signing him and I agreed as well because of the FO situation and us having a rookie head coach. But if we still had Dick Vermiel as a coach or strong head coach personality with the same situation we are in and with the same roster we have would you then be for taking Vick?
Thanks for taking your time to answering my questions.
Jeff Gordon: We have to take Spags at his word when he talks about this whole pillars thing. The Rams had Shaun Smith in for a visit, but there was no serious interest there.

Nick in Springfield, MO: What are the chances the Cards will sign Shelby Miller? How about John Smoltz? If the club signs Smoltz, would he be the 7th/8th inning man or the 5th Starter?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: There is every chance Miller will sign, barring an unexpected late development. The Cards are bidding hard for Smoltz, but that is a wide-open battle.

STLguy3472: Hey Gordo,

I often find myself reading the userposts after certain articles; and I have found myself getting increasingly annoyed by fans, mainly the impatience. I am not sure if it is mainly just coming from those individuals who scour every internet report and imagine themselves "arm-chair journalists" but my question is this....What are the 3 most common complaints that you hear from the fanbase about the 3 franchises, Blues, Rams and Cards?? And to what level do you find the annoyance?
Jeff Gordon: Cards fans still want to fire La Russa, which is odd. And they rag DeWitt, despite the world championship. That, too, is extreme.

Rams fans wanted a front-office overhaul and they got it. The whipping boy, Zygmunt, is long gone.

Blues fans are pretty happy. They always want another scorer, but why?

will from evansville: jeff,
I see that doug davis was on wavers and that the brewers put a claim in. then I read thier GM said they were not going to sign him. so what happens to the player, does the player stay out there for someone else to claim??
Jeff Gordon: Once he clears waivers, then the D-Backs can trade him. Then the fun starts.

Carter: Why is Thurston on the team? For his hitting, fielding or base running?
Jeff Gordon: His versatility serves him well, along with his lefty bat. But there isn't much left for him, that's for sure.

Dan Middleton: Do you think Dave Duncan can identify Smoltz's problem and thus help him to be a pitching plus for the last part of the season.
Jeff Gordon: They would work together on things. John's issue is second time through the order. Maybe he needs to consider that relief role after all.

Brian: In your opinion is it getting harder and harder to resign Holliday every day due to his continued strong performance since coming to Stl?
Jeff Gordon: His value is shooting up, but it appears he wants a no-trade clause and he values a winning environment. Those things help the Cards.

Brian: I just love having Derosa on this team. He seems like a natural fit for St. Louis and the Cardinals. I really hope to see him back next year.
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards do nothing else, the team needs to lock this guy up and don't lose him ala Grudzielanek or the other key mid-priced guys.

Josie Wales: Hi Jeff,
What do you think of Colby Rasmus's chances for Rookie of the Year? Just when I counted him out he comes alive in the weekend series vs. the Padres.
How much have his chances been hurt by the platoon role he had for much of the year?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Colby would have to play almost every day, of course. If he does, then, yes, he'll have a chance because he will post numbers in this offense.

Phillip Sanders: Why don't the cardinals give Allen Craig a try at third base, he came up as a third baseman and he has certainly hit well enough. Is he that bad on defence or is there something else going on.
Jeff Gordon: Freese is a similar hitting prospect with a much better 3B glove. So Craig will have to make it as an extra bat.

Dan: How strong is the Cardinals' interest in John Smoltz? What other possible reievers are on their radar?

Thank you so much,

Dan
Creve Coeur
Jeff Gordon: Very strong interest in Smoltz. If the Padres don't want Bell anymore, this team would take him.

kat89447: Hi Gordo, I have to say the "air" around the Cards feels different. To me it feels a little like the 80's cards, when you just know they will get it done. Everything is coming together and the players seem to be meshing like they started spring training together. However, it still feels like we have a noticable weak spot around the 7th and 8th inning. Do you think the Cards will actually make the deal with Smoltz or another pitcher? I have to say the idea of Smoltz being a vet for the BP going into October (hopefully) is intriging. He could also pick up that 5th day on occasion and seems like as good a fit as DeRo fits. Any thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: An interesting option for a few weeks down the road: Lefty Jaime Garcia, who could be an impact guy by next month. He is up to Memphis.

noahjanney: Ok, Matt Holliday has played over 20 games for the Cardinals and we have all seen his contribution: His crazy stats and a better team record. What is your opinion on the chances of him signing a long term deal with the Cardinals now?...25%,50%..100%?????? Apparently he is happy here.
Jeff Gordon: Today, I would put it at 50 percent. If this team makes a playoff run, then it could shoot up as Matt decides to stay and DeWitt decides (maybe) to spend a few more bucks.

tenncardfan: Jeff, the Cardinals front office and ownership deserves plaudits for their acquisitions that have turned the team around. There is still one obvious weakness, however. RH setup relief is either inconsistent (Motte, McClellan) or inexperienced (Hawksworth). Unfortunately, Kinney hasn't turned himself around at Memphis, either. The addition on one more experienced bullpen arm appears a necessity. With so much "sunk cost" invested to obtain the current roster, shouldn't the Cards pull the trigger on one more deal for a bullpen arm? It shouldn't cost that much more, incrementally, to go "all in" for a World Series run.
Jeff Gordon: Money is not the issue as much as having pitching to trade pitching -- and for pitching to clear waivers.

ravenzevenflow: Hi Gordo, how great was the outcome of last nights game, huh!? Did you have any problem with Tony's post-game family chat the other day?
Jeff Gordon: Nah. People get too worked up about the postgame stuff. TLR would rather skip that all together, but FSN wants it. The outcome is what matters.

Josie Wales: Jeff,
Everyone, at least in these parts, agrees that Pujols is the best in baseball.
I would expect his trade value to be huge. Maybe he would return a Wainwright quality pitcher, an all star or potential all star position player, and two or three top minor league prospects. My question,
Is that return about what we could expect, and if so is Albert worth more as a player or a trade chip to one of the big money, big market franchises?
I know the fan base would come unglued but rather than lose him as a FA in a couple of years maybe it would be best to trade him in the off season. It wouldn't be as much fun watching without Albert's stick in the lineup but it might actually be a better team with an influx of several talented players.
Am I crazy?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards could get a bunch of good players for Albert, but they already have a bunch of good players. They have quantity and quality. There is only one Albert. You have a guy like that, you take every game from him that you can. If he leaves, he leaves -- and you take the compensatory picks and move on. You spend the money that he passed on and moves on.

Lawarence Marmie: Should we be concerned that Burton was completely non-existent in the preseason opener?
Jeff Gordon: The bigger concern is all the injuries at WR. Burton will get lots of work now. You will notice him.

Kevin In NJ: Hey Gordo,
I was at the game Friday nightand a couple of things I noticed. Bulger did hold the ball a little too long and Justin King could have got picked on all night. He flat out shold be cut. So my question to you is why do they keep drafting short cover guys when the rest of the league is drafting taller WR's? and where was the blitz pick up?
Thanks and have a good one!
Jeff Gordon: We touched on the blitz pick-up. As for CB, there aren't a whole lot of them available. The tall guys stay at WR. Tall corners are rare. When the Rams drafted a taller guy at CB (Shepherd), he couldn't play football.

DT: I am amazed at the influence of Scott Boras. He is the agent for the top three draft picks all of which are still unsigned and facing today's deadline.
Given that he is a Boras client, and could arguably be the most attractive free agent this winter, it seems we have no chance of keeping Holliday off the market. Plus, locking up Pujols now should also take priority.

However, I get the sense that if the money was there, Holliday would play here. Do the Cardinals realistically have the ability to lock up Pujols and re-sign Holliday or is that just too much?
Jeff Gordon: If Matt lets Scott makes the call, keeping both Holliday and Pujols will be tough.

Teams can't afford to overpay unproven players. so if guys go unsigned, they go unsigned. Teams have to spend wisely to build a winner. Sometimes that doesn't fit Scott's plans. Only a few teams have unlimited budgets.

Ryan: I'm not a St. Louis Lambs fan, but I do have a question. Why is Alex Barron on the roster, or even in the league? Can't they cut him and sign a free agent veteran. He's awful.
Jeff Gordon: He is still the best tackle on this team right now, so cutting him would be problematic.

Steve: What is your prediction for the world series matchup?
Jeff Gordon: Way too soon . . . A lot of people like an all SoCal World Series, but any team that makes this postseason will be able to win it all.

FTTPDC: WIll Shelby Miller live up to the hype? Is he overated? How fast would the Cards push him through the system?
Jeff Gordon: He is a good prospect. All the scouts agree. But a lot can happen to a kid, as the Cards know. A lot of former Cards picks have ended up under the knife.

Charlie F: Gordo,

I understand there's a need to give bench players an occasional start to keep them sharp, but it seems that unless your name is Pujols, Molina, Ludwick or Holliday, there's no such thing as a regular player on this team. If anybody's earned the right to "regular" status, Brendan Ryan has, yet TLR insists on a revolving door of DeRosa, Ryan, Schumaker, Lugo and Thurston and short, second and third. How much of this is a matter of keeping players sharp and how much is LaRussa's compulsive need to tinker with the lineup to live up to the "genius" tag?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan gets hurt a lot. Skip can't hit lefties well. Lugo is hitting and playing good D. Hence the rotation there. I generally agree that continuity is nice, such as lately when Rasmus has gotten plenty of ABs.

Right now this team has three proven hitters on the bench at any given time.

Paul Sulser: How much does Jose Oquendo earn in salary as the 3rd base coach for the Cardinals? I would hope that his length of tenure and abilities are well rewarded by the Cardinals management.
Jeff Gordon: Don't know his salary, but it is a fraction of the TLR money. That is the way it is in baseball.

Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

I got to watch the first preseason game on the NFL network the other night. I don't know if you got a chance to see it, but I'm not sure if the Rams were ever mentioned once during the entire broadcast. You would have thought that Rex Ryan was the only coach making his debut that night and the Jet players were the only ones on the field. And the disturbing mancrush that the announcers had on Mark Sanchez could only be rivaled by Chris Berman's vomit-inducing gushings about Tom Brady. I thought the coverage on the NFL network was supposed to be balanced? What's up with that?
Jeff Gordon: I missed that, but I enjoyed all the Mark Sanchez coverage. It was like he was the only guy playing.

forehandbackhandwaterbottle: Who scores the first goal of the year for the Blues?
Jeff Gordon: David Perron, if Andy Murray doesn't strangle him first.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

Yesterday's dragout made me wonder...

What is the typical getaway day schedule for a team about to hit the road? For instance, what time will the Cards arrive to the ballpark for a 1:15 game and what is the order of events that occur after the game?

If the game ends at 4:15, where do they go from there and what time does the bus leave for the airport?
Jeff Gordon: On getaway day, the timetable is flexible because the team flies charter. When the game ends, guys have x amount of time to get ready to leave.

FTTPDC: After seeing the first pre-season game for the Rams ( I know its just preseason), What are your expectations this year for them? Is a playoff berth unconcievable?
Jeff Gordon: Yes. My over-under is six victories. This will take time.

ramboni: Gordo,
do you think Rams defensive backs will be competitive during the regular season? It seems they keep getting burnt on big pass plays.
Thanks,
Todd
Jeff Gordon: There were a few missed coverage, but King actually had coverage on what of the big hits.

forehandbackhandwaterbottle: Who is the best ATHLETE in St. Louis sports, right now.
Jeff Gordon: Pure athlete: Steven Jackson. Best performer, of course, is Albert. But Jackson is a monster.

Stubby Clapp: With Motte sucking wind why not call up someone from Memphis? Matt Scherer looks like a viable option given his numbers and the fact that he is currently on the 40-man roster.
Jeff Gordon: But does his have "big league" stuff. I haven't heard anybody rave about his "out" pitches. In time, he may get to prove that.

bobjmc13: OK
Rams need receivers and a good return man. How about Roscoe Parrish form Buffalo? It appears they have too many receivers and are looking to trade him. What would it take to get him? A 4th round pick would be worth it, I think.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams feel OK with the guys they have, if healthy. If anybody else gets hurt, we'll see.

erich_stlmo@yahoo.com: Hey Gordo also I like to ask to how do you think St. Louis as a whole as a communtiy, from the mayor to even the state governor, how do you think the reaction would of been and the support would of been if the Rams had sign Vick or even if the Chiefs sign Vick as far as the state governor support or stance on it.
Jeff Gordon: There would have been some uproar, but people wear Little jerseys to the game. So that is exaggerated.

Lawarence Marmie: Hey Gordo,

I heard that since the Rams finally came to their senses and are going to retire Deacon Jones's number, that they might also be coming around to recognizing the career's of some other great Rams players in the organization's history. Any truth to the rumor that we might soon be watching ceremonies for Jamie Duncan, Eric Crouch, and Lovell Pinkney?
Jeff Gordon: Bam! Larry is in midseason form. Good to see. Of course, your Yankees are rolling, so you're happy.

daniel: If/when Shelby Miller signs, what part of the rotaion would he fit in the majors long term and what skills make him such a top-ten money wanter?
Jeff Gordon: He has the potential to grow into a true power pitcher. But . . . he is just a teenager. So he has to grow. Will he? We'll see. But he is miles ahead of most pitchers his age.

ramboni: do you honestly believe that Marc Bulger will have a decent season or will the damage from the past 2 years be too much for him to overcome? I want to believe in him, I really do, what are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not optimistic. There is a lot of undo. How confident can he become? There is a lot to undo.

nlaw7220: Mr. Gordan,

Do you think that Mark DeRosa has contributed to a looser atmosphere in the clubhouse giving some balance to no humor guys like Tony and Dave
Jeff Gordon: He is a great team guy. He offers more to the atmosphere than Adam and Troy did. He ties a lot of the elements of the team together. That is why keeping him would be a good thing.

LawrenceKScardsfan: Jeff, thanks for taking my question. What are the odds that either Adam or Chris win 20 games? Given that there's a tight bunch when it comes to Cy Young Award candidates, with Josh Johnson, Dan Haren, Carp, Waino, Lincecum, Cain, and Santana in the mix, will a 20 game winner have the inside track? And given what you know about who has been given the Cy Young Award in the past, what do you see is the order of importance - 20 games won, most games won, lowest ERA, or playoff-bound team? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: ERA is huge, more than total wins. In this case, the strikesouts will likely be the tiebreaker. A lot of these guys dominate, but some dominate more than others.

Gabriel: Hey Gordo,

Has matt holliday made comments or anything asbout staying in stlouis? Why dont we just trade glaus and who could be our next third baseman in the future...

Thanks !
Jeff Gordon: Somebody wants Glaus right now? That is in unlikely. Give him a few more weeks to see if he can hit and field.

Next third baseman: David Freese, unless DeRosa stays there.

redrover: Heard this question asked the other day on a radio talk show. Whats worse for St Louis? Losing Pujols or losing the Rams? I thought it was a crazy question, but curious on your thoughts...
Jeff Gordon: Losing the Rams would be the end of NFL football here for a long time, maybe for good. The Cardinals will exist after Albert is done.

ESmith: Hey Gordo!

I haven't been able to see the last few games and haven't seen Ankiel's name much in the game summaries. Is he hurt, Rasmus playing that well, something else, or a combination of all of these?

Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus had two three-hit games, followed by a game-winning two-run homer. So he'll get to play.

Chris: Gordo: Thanks as always!

I read that a couple more of the WRs got nicked up in the first pre-season game - will the FO stand pat with what they have at WR, or will they target a vet (either currently free or soon-to-be released/traded)? Also, do you think Darby just had a down game or is it indicative of his level of play? Last season I thought he was a standout at blitz pickup - based on what I've read from Friday's game, he seems to have lost his touch on that front...
Jeff Gordon: Darby was doing very well in camp, but that only gets you so far. He needs to pick it up. The competition is pretty intense there.

KeithTkachuckFan: Hi Jeff,

Cards are looking great, no?

Do you agree that Gril Scouts Thin Mints are the most over-rated cookies out there? They're hard, crumbly, don't taste that great, and way over priced.

Thanks,

KTF
Jeff Gordon: Put the Thin Mints in the fridge, then eat them chilled with coffee.

ramboni: I know there are a lot of questions yet to be answered but where do you feel the Rams will end up in the NFC West? Can we make the playoffs?
Jeff Gordon: Arizona is the runaway team to beat. The playoffs are a long way off for the Rams.

Mike Gabbard: Mr. Gordon,
I was just looking up a list of teams and the number of times they have won the World Series. Yankees - 26, Cardinals - 10, Red Sox - 7, Reds, Pirates, Giants, and Dodgers - 5, etc.
By most standards, St. Louis would be considered a mid-market team - yet the Cards have been blest with a comparitively large number of world champioanships.
My questions to you sir are: In your opinion, to what do the Cardinals (and those faithful fans that follow them) owe this good fortune to? And, do you think it will stay that way? And, why?
Our sports writers are the best!
Thank you for your time,
Mike Gabbard
Jeff Gordon: Most of those titles came when the market size meant nothing. Now it means a lot, so any championship is to be savored. It is hard to win in this size market in MLB baseball.

old larry: I have watched the Rams preseason game many times and although the game was less than perfect I believe the team looked organized and purposeful from top to bottom. The lack of the little mistakes was glaring. I know there were blitz package miss cues and the kick returner was seemingly confused but this is the first preseason game. I am talking about Spags and crew having the team playing like professionals and not looking inept or unprepared.

What do you think overall when you watched this team Friday?
Jeff Gordon: Aside from the injuries already depleting depth, things are going pretty well. We won't really see this team until Jackson touches the ball 25 times. That will change everything.

Nathan in MN: Hey Gordo, thanks for the chats. Do you think we could win next year with this line-up, bench, and pitching staff? We could sign Holliday and DeRosa. Let Ankiel, Ludwick, Wellemeyer, Greene go and use that money for another starter and bench bat.

Schumaker RF
Rasmus CF
Pujols 1B
Holliday LF
DeRosa 2B
Molina C
Freese 3B
Ryan SS
Pitcher

Bench: Pagnozzi, Stavinhova, Lugo, Jay, Craig

Rotation: Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse, Garcia, FA Starter

Bullpen: Franklin, Mccllelan, Miller, Reyes, Hawksworth, Motte, Boggs
Jeff Gordon: If you trade Ludwick for quality pitching, great. But he is an asset that is a ways from free agency still.

forehandbackhandwaterbottle: It seemed as if Major League Baseball was very impressed with the city throughout the All-Star festivities. I look around that stadium and see a dump. The stadium itself hugs up against highway 40. This 'Ballpark village' that was supposed to be so special is still just a blueprint on someone's desk. What in the world was so impressive about our All-Star game?
Jeff Gordon: It was a well-run event, with the stuff at the convention center and the zillion side events and parties. It went quite.

Nick Narlis: Hi Jeff,
Although it is a bit premature with 43 regular season games to go, the Cardinals would play the defending world champion Philly squad in the division season playoffs if the season ended today. This to me is not a great match up for our Redbirds, especially with their own recent acquisition in bringing in Lee. What do you really think our chances are against the Phils, even if it happens in the NLCS versus the NLDS? Lastly, what else should we do between now and August 31st to better our chances in post-season, should we qualify?

Thanks,
Nick from NJ
Jeff Gordon: The Phillies are a tough matchup for this team, since they have no lefty starters (yet for the Cards) and Reyes struggling.

The Cards' needs are the same as they were before the trade deadline: A fifth starter and a steady RH reliever.

redrover: Is Chris Mason our man? Or should the Blues shop for a seasoned goalie?

I personally do not care for Thin Mints. I'm a Do-si-dos guys.
Jeff Gordon: The Blues signed Ty Conklin to be that guy.

mmueller12: Just a correction to a previous poster. The Cards are likely to get LA or Rockies in the first round of the playoffs as the wild card is going to be out of the west. They will only see the Phillies if they both make it to the NLCS.
Jeff Gordon: We'll see how it goes. There is an incentive to avoiding the Phillies as far as matchups go. As for LA, that team is still trying to get better, so it could still change.

DT: What is you Over/under on the number of weeks it takes Rams fans to call for Null to be the starter?
Jeff Gordon: Not going to happen. Even if both guys got wiped out ahead of him, the Rams would likely seek veteran help.

Adam: Gordo,

There's a ton of clamoring for Allen Craig in the electronic media, yet he hasn't appeared in a Cards uni. Is the Cardinal opposition to promoting him stemming from:

A.) A belief he's more John Gall/Larry Luebbers than a guy whose AAA numbers convert meaningfully into MLB numbers, or
B.) The fact his defense is supposedly atrocious, or
C.) Simply a case of "not enough room on the 40 man; try again in 2010"?
Jeff Gordon: He hit great in the spring, but then he didn't hit when the Cards needed somebody. And now they don't need someone. But he has a future as an extra bat.

That's it for this week. See you next Monday!
