nick n: Although the Cardinals indicated they were not really interested in acquiring rental players they did so with Jake Westbrook. Do you think that Cardinals are taking a calculated gamble they will be able to sign Westbrook to an extension (assuming all goes for the remainder of 2010)? If so, what do you figure a guy making $11 mil in his last year will be looking for to sign up with the Redbirds? If not, will Westbrook be a type A, type B or an unresticted free agent with no compensation due if not signed by the time the offseason free agency period commences?
Jeff Gordon: Westbrook will determine his market value and compensation level by how he pitches. If he throws well and likes it here, he could re-up as Pineiro did initially. The market for mid-level starters is pretty dicey. Some cash in, others get poor offers. The Cards will worry about that when the time comes. Since Hawksworth failed to make his case for the No. 5 slot -- and since Ottavino went down with his shoulder injury -- the Cards will need to invest some money in that spot.

Unless, of course, McClellan finally migrates to the rotation.

nick n: It seems like Reyes is now a big "if" every time he comes in a key situation and can no longer be dependeded upon. Do you forsee the Cardinals getting a lefty specialist soon? Who are your sources saying are on the short list at the present time with players now needing to clear waivers as well?
Jeff Gordon: The lefty relief pile is underwhelming, with guys like old friend Randy Flores and the immortal Joe Beimel. The Cards are polishing up Renyel Pinto (2.70 ERA with Florida this season)at Memphis just in case.

nick n: I myself saw Lohse at Citi-Field on the field last Tuesday during the pre-game warm up having an extended catch with Garcia for a good 15 minutes. Duncan and other coaches were chatting and seemingly not concerned at all about Kyle. Plus the reports from everyone are encouraging for a return real soon. Assuming Lohse returns after a 3rd rehab start, what have you heard his pitch limit will initally be? Is there reason for the Cardinals management and us fans to be cautiously optimistic that Lohse stands a good chance of returning to a reliable pitching form we saw when he was initially acquired?
Jeff Gordon: I'd keep that optimism very cautious. Lohse still has a lot to prove. I wouldn't bring him up until he's had a 100-pitch start in the minors. Westbrook is in the rotation and Suppan was fine last time out. No rush.

dub the beachcomber: So Gordo, I feel sorry for Ludwick. He was the scapegoat. Most teams who need to be shaken up, the manager gets fired. Cards can't do that ergo trade a core player. It is an old mgmt trick. Gordo, does the front office think that folks can't see through that? Also, I lived in Pittsburgh for awhile and I never heard tv announcers with so much hubris while losing their butts. Will that team ever become winners again? Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: With Jocketty in Cincy and the Cubs raking in big revenue in Chicago, life will be tough to the Pirates for a long, long time. Milwaukee and Houston both have ambitious owners, too.

Ludwick did pay the price for the failure of teammates, which is unfortunate. But the Cards weren't going to pay him for the long haul, so Mozeliak played that chip a few months early.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

Putting aside any emotional reaction to the Ludwick trade; the Cards just strengthened the best team in the NL in exchange for a pitcher who (by all reports leading up to Saturday) was being shopped by a Cleveland team looking to dump salary and get back a mid-to-low level prospect in return. It just doesn't add up. It's like a car salesmen asking $20,000 for a car and Mo just paid him $30K.
Jeff Gordon: Cleveland got a mid-level pitching prospect for Westbrook -- something the Cards didn't really have to trade. And the Cards did strengthen the Padres with that trade. If these teams both make the playoffs (a big if), then The Trade could add some spice to the proceedings.

captain hero: Is there something special about either of the prospects that San Diego gave up in the Ludwick fiasco that would justify the value the Padres gave up to steal such a high-quality player in return? Wouldn't the preferred move be for the Cardinals to give up a prospect of equal value to the pitcher Cleveland recieved and keep Ludwick for this stretch run, then not offer him arbitration next year, if they were unwilling to give their top clutch hitter and motivator in the clubhouse $7-9 million next year, than give him to one of your top league rivals, who might stand between you and a championship, for what appears to be virtually nothing?
Jeff Gordon: Cleveland scouted the Cards thoroughly and didn't like what the team had in the minors. And Cards management obviously did not view Ludwick as the team's top club hitter and motivator. If that were the case, Ryan would have gotten the big contract and Holliday would have moved on after last season as a free agent.

As for the virtually nothing part, Westbrook upgrades a Cards rotation that was bleeding profusely. As fatigue sets in on Garcia, Westbrook's value will grow.

scadder21: Please explain the Ludwick trade to me. Cleveland ultimately got a AA pitcher for giving up Westbrook. Did we not have anyone? Surely we could have matched Kluber or given Cleveland 2 minor leaguers. Seems to me more to meets the eye. To me this reaks of a cost cutting move for the off season and not a deal that helps the team win now. It was known we were dealing Ludwick from the get go one would have thought that we could have got one of the good young pitchers from Tampa or Sanchez from the Giants. The question is why? And how will this deal effect the clubhouse specifically when Jon Jay comes back down to earth.
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick for Sanchez would have been interesting, if San Francisco was willing to trade a kid for a 32-year-old outfielder. Tampa Bay wasn't going to deal a top young starter for Ludwick.

As for the offseason cost-cutting, Albert is due a raise in the range of $10 million to $15 million a year. That money would come from the Ludwick pile. And if Albert refuses to extend, then that money will go toward a high-end successor for 2011 and beyond.

MichaelP07: Gordo,

It seems that every week at least one fan would write to ask if the team couldn't trade Ludwick for so and so. I always felt that with all the slumps and lack of timely hitting this year he'd be the last to go. So I was shocked and disappointed to see him traded for a pitcher with an ERA of close to 5.00 who will only pitch every fifth day. Luddy had a lot of character and perseverance which I think will be missed. I thought it interesting that Jay was hitting so well before the trade and then went one for eight after he had a lock on the job. Obviously, I don't see things the way Mo does because on the surface this is a bad trade. Mo seemed to indicate that he needed to change the chemistry in the clubhouse. But Luddy was well liked and respected by his teammates. Surely he wasn't the cause of any dissention... What am I missing that makes this a good deal in Mo's eyes?
Jeff Gordon: If Mozeliak didn't like the deal, he wouldn't have made it. I would have kept Ludwick for the duration of this season for a variety of reasons and taken my chances with a lesser starting pitcher off the pile. On the flip side, replacing Ludwick's bad will not fall entirely on Jay, as I note in a column elsewhere on the site.

Toadstool: I noticed an interesting item in one of the stories pertaining to the departure of Ludwick. It quoted Rasmus as saying that last season there were a handful of guys that made it difficult for him as a young outfielder, but that Ludwick was always someone that he could approach.

In previous stories I saw that Ankiel was not always terribly receptive to having Rasmus around. I know he was not always easy for the media to work with either.

Was he really that bad in the lockerroom?
Jeff Gordon: That was an odd deal last year with both Ankiel and Duncan fighting to save their careers. Duncan, as the public whipping boy, had an unpleasant time of it. Change was good for the Cards.

dub the beachcomber: DANGER WILL ROBINSON! Houston seems to be one of those teams who benefit by having a fire sale. Now they are full of a bunch of players who are giving 110% to try to win a job or make an impression. Not only are they recharged but they have guys who the cards have no book for. Meyers, Norris and Happ. Three the cards struggle with. Can the team step up and beat these guys? thanks gordo
Jeff Gordon: Interesting week at Busch. Myers has owned the Cards so far this season. Westbrook will have to be sharp in his debut to get the team off to a good start.

dub the beachcomber: Poor Pittsburgh. The cards once again (soiled) their pierogis. Gordo, with Westbrook going tonight, what do you expect from him and what marker would you consider to be a successful debut? thanks gordo
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need to win games. If he wins, that's a successful debut.

Andrew Sampson: Hi Jeff

As August heats up, Four queries for this week:

What's it going to take to get Suppan out of the rotation? And what does Mr Westbrook bring to the table?

Never mind return duties, where do you see Mr Gilyard fitting in on the Rams' offense?

I was sorry to see Big Dwayne get dealt(but it makes sense; that division is loading up on fighters), but with his departure, that leaves an open spot for a spar forward. Should the Blues offer it to a Peoria vet?

Have you put in a request to go to the MU-IL game on Sept 4th? I hope you get to go!
Jeff Gordon: It's ironic that Suppan delivered his best start after the Cards essentially replaced him. Right now he is nothing more than insurance. He'll get another start, then presumably Lohse will take his place.

I see Gilyard as an impact slot-type receiver.

I see the Blues adding one more forward with some scoring ability.

Not sure how I will watch the Mizzou-Illinois game, but it'll be fun. Sad to see the series end.

nick n: Don't get me wrong, I am very appreciative as a fan in seeing Brendon Ryan get the game winning hit on Saturday night and going 3-for-3 yesterday afternoon. That being said, I know it worked out but do you know if Ryan was bunting yesterday on his own with Colby @ 2B with no outs and Wainwright on deck? Also, later in that same game with Colby @ 1B, Brendon takes a "borderline" called strike three on a 3-1 count making Rasmus a dead duck trying to steal second. Was a hit-and-run called with Ryan just thinking the ball was too low and thus he earned a walk with no need to protect the runner? I was starting to think between the bunt yesterday and his game winning hit where Ludwick was not initially breaking for the plate that things the breaks were turning. However, it just seems like Ryan is regularly too wreckless and too often. Do you think there is enough raw potential here that TLR will continue on with this project or would the Cardinals be better served in the long run to groom within (T Greene) or obtain someone else to be their everyday shortstop?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan's glove is valuable. He will continue to suffer the occasional brain freeze, but he'll stay in the lineup as long as he is at least a competitive hitter.

Michael: More of a comment versus a question. Realizing there was a need to acquire a starting pitcher in order to compete down the stretch, giving up Ryan Ludwick who has done nothing but produce for this club for a so-so rental pitcher is the second worse trade that I can remember (Keith Hernandez for Neil Allen being the worse). Ryan never did get the respect for his contributions while wearing the Cardinal uniform and I wish him well for the rest of his career. I think the club will miss his offensive production and would have preferred the club see how the Pujols situation is leaning before giving this quality team player away.
Jeff Gordon: I agree on the Albert part. By moving Ludwick, the Cards are assuming that Albert is ready to lock in to an extension. Ludwick offered reliable protection against Pujols opting to leave after the 2011 season.

Gmartin: Rams Question: Is D. Alexander from Missouri going to be a shot by the Rams? If so what are his chances?
Jeff Gordon: Rams are interested, as are other teams. But can that knee withstand the rigors of camp? If so, he would be an excellent bet to make the team with that size.

Larry: Jeff...seems like we could have gotten Jackson from Arizona in giving up Ludwick and using the two prospects from San Diego in the trade for Westbrook. We would have at least a starting pitcher that was not a rental. Know that the Dbacks would not have been interested in Ludwick, but the prospects from SD might have made it work. The biggest issue is that we got a two month pitcher for Ludwick. Your thoughts..
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick was a rental, too, because the team was ready to move him after the year to free up money for other needs -- particularly the Pujols situation. Also, Westbrook will become a strong candidate to re-sign if he throws well. That Mozeliak traded Ludwick to get him will add to his willingness to offer dough.

Jackson is a power pitcher, Maybe Duncan could have fixed him, but Westbrook is more of his type of guy.

Gmartin: Cardinal Question: Which pitchers do you see being sent down to make room for Lohse and the 5th bench guy? Is Craig a likley call up now?
Jeff Gordon: The torrid Craig is likely to return as soon as he is eligible, to take some heat off Jay. The Cards could send down a younger pitchers (Boggs?) for a few weeks to keep MacDougal and a middle innings guy (Hawksworth). Then the September roster expansion would take care of that.

A Craig/Stavinoha flip would add versatility and allow the Cards to go with a short bench until Freese returns.

And what are the odds that everybody stays healthy?

semophil: The Ludwick trade was not very good for St. Louis. We gave up way to much when compared to the Oswalt and Harren trade. I hope this works out down the stretch.
Jeff Gordon: To get Oswalt, the Phillies gave up an outstanding young major league pitcher. To get Haren, the Angels gave up strong No. 3/No. 4 starting pitcher. It's hard to get pitching without giving it up.

rich: Jeff: Why only 6 years on Bradfords contract? Doesn't seen like a long time. If he turns out to be as good as advertised when his contracts up he might really be a star and 1. either command another high priced contract or 2. move on to another team as a superstar.
Jeff Gordon: Bradford could suffer five shoulder separations in three years and be done. Six years is plenty.

nick n: Molina is clearly carrying his weight for his defensive skills including the brilliant way he calls a game but his hitting has now hit a low spot. In prior seasons, Yadier could be depended upon to hit in the clutch more than making up for his lack of speed and lower batting average. Yadier is now more or less a one dimensional defensive catcher, and the Cardinals offense continues to sputter most nights. I also understand Yadier is a force in the club house and there is really no catcher within the organization that could even be a servicable platoon player at this point in time. A lot was made that a shake up in the clubhouse was in order and that was a major factor why Ludwick was traded. As Yadier gets older, his offensive skills will likely continue to erode making him no more than a 7 or 8-type hitter at best. Do you think the Cardinals will try to get a Ivan Rodriquez (Nationals) type player in here this month to try to better compete this year for a World Series ring? I understand the pitchers love Yadier catching, but longer term, do you support the front office insisting ala Colby Rasmus that another catcher within the organization like Anderson takes their lumps defensively while getting significantly more playing time for their battting prowless to bolster the Cardinals attack?
Jeff Gordon: The aging Rodriguez is in a statistical free fall in Washington. Yadier has had one really bad month. Otherwise, he is about a .260 hitter. That is good enough, given his defense -- but I'd rather see him bat eighth and the pitcher ninth.

bob: The bad news is that we have Mozeliak for 3 more years. Why give up a power right handed hitter when we can't beat leftys now. This trade made no sense unless we gave up a lessor player.
Jeff Gordon: Freese's return will help stack the lineup better vs. lefties, since Lopez could move to second in that scenario. And I'd like see what Craig could do with semi-regular work.

Josh: Gordo,

In your opinion, who will finish camp as the 1, 2, and 3 WRs and 1, 2, and 3 CBs?
Jeff Gordon: Robinson, Avery, Gilyard at WR and Bartell, Fletcher and King at CB.

ecleme22: Hey Gordo,
I'm not a die-hard Ludwick fan. I'm all for trading hitting for pitching (though I think we got a ho-hum pitcher in this deal).

Question: If you look at Ludwick's numbers or even Jermaine Dye's annual numbers. Both of these two men could be had for 5-8 mil at year.
Now take Holliday's numbers: Even though Matt's numbers are better (slightly), are they worth 9.5-12.5 mil extra a year?

Also, I'm sure Lud and Dye don't require a 7year commitment.

Love to hear your thoughts.
Thank JG!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Holliday's 24-RBI month reminded us why he got the money. Also, Ludwick and Dye were never threats to win a batting title in their prime.

Josh: Gordo,

Let's say the Rams finish this season with 1 or 2 wins again. Does that put Spags on the hotseat for his 3rd season? Not that he'll have to make the playoffs, but just show some improvement. I'm asking this because a switch in coaching staffs in the next 2 or 3 years could be very detrimental to Bradford's development.
Jeff Gordon: Kroenke will want to see major improvement, in victories or otherwise. Another 1-15 season would doom him. Nobody can survive back-to-back seasons like that unless some sort of natural disaster picks off half the team.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

There was some suggestion made in a P-D article this morningthat Jay & Craig would be a platoon and that Winn & Stavinoha would be in the mix. How many freaking platooned positions is this team going to have? Identify 8 guys, maybe platoon 1 position, and just play ball. While I do respect what Winn has done here thus far, can you imagine going toe-to-toe with the Yanks having their cast-off outfielder as part of a platoon in the World Series? Laughable.
Jeff Gordon: Not as laughable as thinking Nick Johnson was the answer at first base.

rick: A couple of weeks ago I suggested to trade Ludwick for a starting picture. Why would you trade a proven outfield bat for a possible temporary player since Westbrook is a free agent at he end of the year. Was there any consideration to trade Ludwick for either Haren or Oswalt?

Rick
Jeff Gordon: Why would the Astros or Diamondbacks acquire a 32-year-old outfielder while rebuilding?

nick n: I see that last week our highly touted and can't miss former top prospect Brett Wallace was (again) traded to the Astros. Do you think that the Cardinals front office is now dealing from a disadvantage this summer in that other teams are leary and discount more our other "top" minor league prospects? Certainly Wallace not being able to play 3B well enough is a factor. But is there anything held against the Cardinals in that he has turned out to be (thus far) shall we say not what was advertised? I know that everyone has scouts to evaluate talent, but it does seem like there is more to the Wallace story than us fans think. How do you see this?
Jeff Gordon: Wallace has been involved in multiple trades related to high-end veteran players. And now he is playing every day in Houston. How many other first-round picks from his draft year are regular MLB players?

Sean Beachem: I think the Cards had to get another pitcher and Westbrook will be a good fit but trading Ludwick makes no sense. Mo mentioned protecting the prospects but he could have traded a minor league pitcher or two for Westbrook and then traded Ludwick in the offseason for some prospects. Ludwick for Westbrook seems like a desparate move and puts on unbelievable amount of pressure on your young guys in Jay, Rasmus and Freese (when he returns). Is there another move in the works?

Versus lefties is TLR going to start Winn and Stavo in the outfield? That lineup wouldnt beat the Pirates.

Welcome to a no win situation Mr Westbrook
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus will play almost every day and learn to hit lefties. Craig or Winn would start in RF against lefties ahead of Stavinoha.

nick n: It is pretty amazing watching Pujols insist on playing through his nagging type injuries. Mauer in Minnesota now signed long term had a cortisone shot for his aching shoulder this weekend, and seems to be getting rested once or twice a week regularly with the Twins in contention and despite a DH option available in the AL. Does Tony plan on getting Pujols at least a few 2 days off combining a day off with a game off based upon how the schedule lines up from now to the end of the season? Are you concerned at all that Pujols himself is pressing and losing objectivity in insisting to stay in the line-up everyday more for what is best to bolster his individual stats (and looming free agency after 2011 season) compromising what is best for the team chances to win it all with a healthier and better rested Pujols this year?
Jeff Gordon: Playing hurt isn't helping Albert's numbers. He just had a tough July. The days off in the August schedule will help him, but he could use a few maintenance days on top of that.

Mike: This might be a silly question but I wonder about Brad Penny and next year. He was pitching well before he went down and I don't think he would cost much given his injury. Might he be a consideration for next year's rotation?
Jeff Gordon: He moves to the back of the line. Westbrook will be the more obvious option, unless he believes he can break the bank.

Ramsloyal1: Gordo,

I agree with you when you say the offense is not doomed because of the loss of Ludwick. But it is damaged. Help us make some sense of the trade. Mo says money is not the issue. Then why didn't they leave San Diego out of the equation and simply trade a couple of low level prospects to Cleveland for Westbrook? Thanks so much for your time.
Jeff Gordon: Cleveland scouted the Cards and opted not to take any of those guys.

Professor Moriarty: Mr. Gordo,
You have often defended TLR against those questioning his tactics, mainly using the rational of success and how he motivates his players.
I have problems with the way he evaluates talent, shows favoritism, relegates some to eternity in the double wide doghouse, and overmanages at every opportunity. Gee, that sounds like an over the top little league coach to me.
If you were morphed from PD chatmaster to Cardinals skipper, what would manager Gordon do different than Tony?
Thanks Jeff
Jeff Gordon: Personally, I wouldn't get caught up in the righty/lefty thing with the bullpen, especially when I have a lefty unable to throw strikes.

But otherwise, TLR is the winningest modern manager despite all these perceived faults. He knows what he is doing.

Josh: Gordo,

Any names to throw out for potential waiver trades for the Cards?
Jeff Gordon: Lot of guys out there, like outfielder Luke Scott (who might not clear waivers). But first I'd like to see Craig get some more at bats against lefties to get a head start on next year's platooning.

Gmartin: Prediction:

The wildcard will come from the NL Central. I have to figure the teams in the East and West will beat each other up pretty good in the last couple of months. The Reds and Cardinals play a much easier schedule. Reds are a young team but their pitching is very solid so I do not see them folding.
Jeff Gordon: I don't see them folding either -- so Cincinnati will force the Cards to win at a higher clip just to keep up.

Fresno Ram Fan: Hey Gordo,

Now that Sam is signed, when do u see him being named starter?
Jeff Gordon: After the bye week would suit me fine, but I suppose he'll get the nod after the third preseason game.

nathan: In Saturday's game vs. Pitt, the Pirates had runners on first and second. I believe it was Molina that muffed a pop up and both runners ended up being out. I was at the game and many of us were confused and never figured out the official call on that play. Do you have the explanation?
Jeff Gordon: Didn't see it, but I'm guessing from the play by play that the hitter was out on the infield fly rule and the runner was out at second trying to advance at his own peril.

mightymike105: Good Monday Jeff,

Personally I hated 2 see Ludy go but I do understand. We did need more starting pitching, we have young depth in the outfield and let's face it I doubt they were going to want 2 pay Ludy more money next season especially with Albert's big payday on the horizon. So on the Cards end they got what they believe is a decent starter and they dumped salary. In my opinion it was a gamble to ship Ludy off who was a key part of this offense and most times its 2nd most feared bat. For a struggling offense this was not good. But it is what it is. Guys are just going to have to step it up on a regular basis and the big boys are going to have to do more. I really hope the new arm does well and I wish Ludy much success against all but us.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need Holliday to be the second-most feared bat for this deal to work. Also, Rasmus needs to regain his power stroke. And Freese needs to hit upon his return. And Ryan needs to sustain his recent push. Well, you get the idea.

mightymike105: Jeff,

Looking over the Rams schedule I'd say Spags must get at least 4 or more wins or he might not last. With the exception of a few games this is not a scary schedule. Our division is weak. Only Frisco may be a playoff team. So this is a great opportunity to make strides on the winning front. The key Jeff will be the offense. We have to score a lot more than 10 a game. If we can squeeze it up to maybe 17+ and give our defense more rests between series I'd say these wins are attainable. Again I'm not expecting us to make the playoffs but another season like the last is just unacceptable.
Jeff Gordon: That's a pretty fair assessment.

BluesFan: Hi Gordo,

Thanks for taking the questions. A few for you:

1) Do you feel that signing our core young players to short term deals will have any negative impact on their desire to stay with the Blues long term?

2) Do you feel that Blues management failed this off season, or that allowing for another year of growth is a necessary evil in order to get over the hump? How much improvement can we actually expect from this team?

3) Luddy was my favorite player, really sad to see him go. Is John Jay the real deal? Before his breakout month I don't even feel like he was a top 5 prospect kind of guy.... (an aside, if he is the real deal, I suppose people can stop poo pooing the ability for the cardinals to grow and scout young talent: Rasmus, Garcia, Yadi, Albert, Jay, (Waino via trade), Luddy, Haren, etc.)
Jeff Gordon: Jay is a nice player. Is he more than a No. 4 outfielder or a platoon guy? We'll see. But he'll play for a while.

Players failed the organization almost across the board, regressing statistically in many cases and struggling inexplicably at home. Management is taking a big gamble this by relying the younger guys to develop en masses this year in the absence of Kariya and Tkachuk.

As for the refusal to sign longer-term deals, welcome to the NHL. This league is headed toward another financial crisis.

45stlouis: hey gordo, long time fan! just wondering if there was any progress being made in regards to the cards top draft picks being signed? i know they got blair locked up, but its difficult to get information on the matter.
Jeff Gordon: Couple weeks to go, so talks will intensify. The Cards need to get all their top guys sign in order to restock. Not much choice there, so I'd expect it to happen. To extend Albert's deal, the Cards will have to believe in the ability of the farm system to produce new (and inexpensive) players every year to balance things up.

mightymike105: Jeff,

So far how would u rate the Rams offseason? So far it's been average 2 me. We still have no decent back up for SJ and depth at LB and DE still concern me.
Jeff Gordon: The LB depth is better and the DE prospects are interesting behind starters Hall and Long. RB is a concern, as is OT. I'd say the offseason is below average to this point for a 1-15 team.

Josh: Gordo,

With the Bills openly saying they're looking to get rid of Aaron Schobel wouldn't it be wise for the Rams to look into adding him? He is exactly the player Chris Long needs to become and would be great veteran leadership for an unproven DL. His contract is large, but outside of that where is the downside.
Jeff Gordon: If he is not sure he wants to play anymore, then a 1-15 team probably doesn't make sense for him.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp10/news/story?id=5430063
That said, the Rams would probably take back Leonard Little, who is in the same boat.

John McClane: Hey there Gordo,

Looks like the gutting of the Stanley cup Champions continues.

Though Chicago was awarded a favorable ruling in the Niemmi case, they have decided they will let him go and go with Turco/Crawford as their goalie tandem.

Personally, I think Niemmi has been over rated by some in this forum, still, the Blackhawks lose another piece to the team that 'hoisted the Cup' just a couple months ago.

I also like where the Blues are sitting not only as a young team who has a shot now at possibly winning this very weakened division, but also in having a ton of money to resign some of/or all of these young guys should they prove their worth this coming season.

Can't wait for the season to start!!!!!!!!

What are your ever wise thoughts on this???
Jeff Gordon: That's quite a gamble, walking away from Niemi's relatively low dollars. How can that team downplay goaltending after going through so many of them before finally finding a playoff hero?

Michael B: With the subtraction of Ludwick, I can only assume there is something in the works to land a productive middle infielder that adds offense; am I correct in this assumption? Who is out there that could clear wavers? What about Uggla???
Thanks G-man
Jeff Gordon: Uggla would not clear waivers. The Cards will move Lopez back to the middle infield in a week or so, as needed.

cardfaninLA: I can understand dealing Ludwick, because of financial reasons and Jay's hot hitting, but don't you think we could have gotten more than Westbrook. Maybe Carmona?
Jeff Gordon: Fair argument. Westbrook is a good fit here, but what happens after this summer? Will he re-sign here? Does his rebuilt arm have mileage left?

Crazy_Legs: Are you aware of any teams that may of offered Marc Bulger a starters contract during the off season? I wish him well in Baltimore and think it would be good for his long term health to sit for a year. I was just wondering if that was the only option he had. Thanks for your time...
Jeff Gordon: He was not offered a starting job, to my knowledge.

cardfaninLA: Give me your picks thus far for:
1)NL MVP
2)NL Cy Young
3)NL Rookie of the Year
Jeff Gordon: 1)NL MVP -- Joey Votto.
2)NL Cy Young -- Adam Wainwright.
3)NL Rookie of the Year -- Jason Heyward, lifting the surprising Braves.

Harold: I don't see why people are getting so down on this team for playing bad. I mean the Cardinals are 12-5 since the all-star break while the reds are 10-6. And what did the reds do to shore up their team for a playoff run? While the Cardinals made a trade to help improve a rotation that makes it more aggressive. Sure we lost a great player in Ludwick but it isn't like we don't have a capable back in Jon Jay or Allen Craig. Plus with the waivers coming up Cardinals still can be players in that crowd, and so can the reds, but the downfall that really sticks out is the Reds dont have but 3 or 4 players with experience in the playoffs and World Series games. Unlike St. Louis who has about 9 or 10 players.
Enough going rambling, question is
Do you see the Cardinals making any player claims to add to the 25 man club or do you foresee them staying still and keeping the team as is?
Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: Lot to be determined yet. Can Freese come back and hit? If so, can Lopez boost the middle infield production? Can Craig add offense against LH starters? The answers to those questions will dictate waiver claims or further dealing.

Norman: What is the chance we pick up a shortstop? Will they trade Ryan in the off season I hope so.
Jeff Gordon: Not many better fielders out there. T. Greene is a possible successor, too. Brendan could define his career for better or worse the next two months.

TC Carter: I've got so many questions but I'll try and do it one at a time to see if others get answered along the way. My first question is about our team ERA which seems a lot of batters are not batting up to expectations (given their league history) how much of this is growing pains of having a new (relatively) inexperienced coach and how much can be attributed to other factors and what might those factors be? OR am I not seeing the numbers right and a lot of batters are actually about where they were expected to be?

Thank you,

DL
Jeff Gordon: A lot of batter have gone bad for a month this season. it happened to Schumaker, Molina and Rasmus. Even Albert was way off for a month, in July. That, plus injuries, kept the team from hitting up to its full potential.

nick n: Pitching wins post season games, and the Cards have as much as anyone this side of the Yankees. Even the Phillies with their trio of starters has significant question marks in the bullpen, which we at least have an edge now. But do you think our two star hitters will hit more in the clutch and be the ex-factors for a run deep into the postseason? And what about Rasmus-do you think he is up for the assignment now with Ludwick gone?
Jeff Gordon: Albert and Matt will have to hit to get the Cards into the postseason and to help them win in the postseason. That was always going to be the case -- but it is more important now with one less proven hitter in the mix. Rasmus will keep maturing, I'm sure there are some hiccups down the road. There always are with younger hitters.

john h: gordo
i am sure this will be asked 1000 times but how in your eyes will the luddy trade be justified? because just getting Westbrook does not cut it in mine

a) cards sign both cox and wilson
b) cards get albert a new/reasonable contract (less then 20% of payroll)
c) team makes it to the WS this year
d) all of the above
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick wasn't in the 2011 plans, so don't look so far down the road. The key is getting into the playoffs this year. If they make it, then the deal was justified.

DL: Hi Gordo,

Here is another question for you. What are we looking at as far as signing the remaining guys from our draft? Any surprises or anybody more or less likely to sign? Is anybody close to signing?

thanks,

DL
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are trying to sign each of the unsigned guys. One by one, they'll fall. May not get all of them, but the Cards will make anybody not signing to walk away from big money.

Kevin in Ca.: G'day Jeff,
I beleive Allen Craig is going to be (very soon) an above average to very good MLB hitter and a valuable piece to the Cardinal future. Please rate him oppose to Jon Jay. What does the future hold for Nick Stavanoa? What was Luddy & the teams reaction to the trade?
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick was sad to leave. The players were upset to see him go. But they played .500 ball for three months, so that's what happens. Life is cruel.

Craig ought to hit at some level in the majors, enough to be at least a utility guy. Jay is vastly superior defensively and he's hitting right now, so he'll play the most.

redbird11290: Hi Jeff

So any under the radar (waiver) stuff you guys are hearing about as far as maybe a bat...I have read speculation about Arizona and Drew. Also Lowell is just wasting in Boston... Theo is just waiting to give him away....any hope out there?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Lowell will clear waivers, but he doesn't fit here unless Freese drops another weight on his foot. Drew isn't clearing waivers, but plenty of notable guys will be available. Let's see what Freese and Craig do and go from there.

Dirty Dozen: What are the available veteran MIF guys that might clear waivers and be available?
Jeff Gordon: Felipe Lopez will be available for middle infield in a week. Not sure there is a better guy available at this point.

redbird11290: Jeff

sorry forgot to ask maybe Jim Edomnds is the piece thats missing he can still play and could get plenty of ABS down the stretch...I think he would be so excited to finish it up here that it would energize the rest of the team and it seems they need some kind of energy. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Milwaukee would like to keep him past this year. I don't see the Cards going there, given the need to leave Rasmus alone in CF, but one never knows.

If this team has a need, it'll be on the right side.

mars: Gordo, I didn't "love" the Ludwick trade. This team already lacks offense, and losing him wmay not make it better. But I do feel like there are positives after this trade, not only this year, but for the future.

1) Westbrook compares favorably to 2 other veteran pitchers that came here with similar pitching styles (Woody Williams and Jeff Suppan). And those pitchers performed VERY well in St. Lou. Westbrook is 32 comes here with a career 1.382 WHIP. he has struck out 284 more batters than he has walked. His career record is 69-71, and he has pitched 200+ innings 3 times. We all know his ground ball rate is outstanding. Williams was 34 and came here with a career 1.370 WHIP. he struck out 374 more batters than he had walked. His career record was 58-62, and he had pitched 200+ innings 2 times before he got here. Suppan was 29 and his career WHIP was hovering around 1.500 when he arrived. he struck out 305 more batters than he had walked. His career record was 62-75, and he had pitched 200+ innings 5 times before he got here. All three have similar statistical backgrounds before coming to St.Lous.

2) Yadier Molina. Westbrook will be dealing to the best pitching coach/catcher tandem in the league. And two that are exceptional at getting strong performances out of ground ball pitchers. Time and time again it has been proven.

3) John Jay is not the only prospect who gets the limelight now. I feel Allen Craig finally has his chance to show what he can do. That platoon of Jay/Craig could be very productive. And now we get to see them play, and not wonder when they will get their opportunity. It's time for them. We all know we need payroll flexibility for the eventual Pujols signing. Having inexpensive productive players is essential. Cards management can now really see what they have in these 2. Is Craig going to get that shot?

4) Rasmus should benefit as well with more regular PT.

5) If Westbrook excels here this year, it shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to sign him to a short-term deal (1 or 2 years) that won't break the bank.

On the surface, I feel we didn't get back the return I thought we should have for Luddy. But it could turn out to the best thing for the Birds, especially down the road, in terms of getting our prospects major league at bats, a ground ball pitcher who could excel with Yady and Dunc, and the payroll flexibility to sign The Machine.

Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: That is how the scenario could play out. I'd love to see Craig gets a bunch of big league at bats this summer to see what his real potential is. He could someday deliver Ludwick-type production.

Craig: I enjoy your work. I feel LaRussa drains the Redbirds of passion and makes unneeded moves to impose his controlling ego. I'm tired of being told to "look at his record." His record with THIS team is not very impressive. I would have fired him after the debacle in Colorado. Something should be done to inspire passion and shake this team up. How about seeing if Whitey would take the job for the rest of the season, and would Mo have the guts to fire LaRussa now?
Jeff Gordon: Fire La Russa with the team in first place, again, to bring Whitey out of retirement? Good one!

Dirty Dozen: What are the chances of Tarasenko playing in St. Louis this season?
Jeff Gordon: Almost no chance.

DN: Ludwick for Westbrook ??? Really ??? The need for pitching aside, could the Cards not have dealt Ludwick in the off-season for MUCH MUCH more ???
Jeff Gordon: A 32-year-old outfielder with an lengthy injury history heading toward $8 million-plus payday -- and just one year removed from free agency -- is not THAT big of trade chip. Cards probably get more for him in the offseason, but it's not like teams are paying a premium to get such players.

Dirty Dozen: In reality, was there any way the cardinals were going to resign Luddy?
Jeff Gordon: If Albert came to them and said "I'm opting for free agency in 2011 and I want to play in New York," then, yes, the Cards might have extended his deal. More likely, though, is the would spend the money on a first baseman to replace Albert.

BillP.: Hey Jeff, I was just curious, what's the word in Chicago, are the Bulls sorry they unloaded Kirk Hinrich? Since they only got Boozer, I was wondering if they regretted the move.
Jeff Gordon: They are REALLY sorry they didn't get LeBron James. After that, what else matters?

Speaking of regret, what does Washington do with Hinrich, anyway?

John: Jeff,

With the lack of power in the lineup with Ludwick gone, does this increase the chance that we will see McGwire activated for the stretch run?

-John
Jeff Gordon: Uh, no. The Cards have hit 105 homers this season. Ludwick had 11 of them.

BillP.: Hey Jeff, what's your opinion on the latest Kroenke rumor about him purchasing the team in 2 lump sums? Do you really think the NFL will turn around and veto Stan? If so, would Khan be back in the picture? Thanks and Have a good week!
Jeff Gordon: Stan apparently figures he is entitled to buy the Rams in installments, since that was the deal that Chip made with Khan. Whether that really is a big deal to the NFL remains to be seen.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/02/stan-kroenkes-wheeling-and-dealing-could-keep-him-from-getting-the-rams/

floodtime: Any thoughts on what August waiver bats the Cards might pursue? Inf or OF?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what (if anything) Freese and Craig can add.

D. Gordon: Any progress on the signing of the remaining Cards' 2010 draftees(namely Cox, Wilson, and Jenkins)?
Jeff Gordon: The club seemed to making some progress with Tyrell Jenkins.

mtomto: Just a quick thanks for the ton of info provided in just 15 minutes. Great job.
Jeff Gordon: Most of the post-Ludwick rage has dissipated, which is surprising.

Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

Do you think the Cards feel slighted with the deal Houston struck with the Phillies? It seems like the Cards would have made a similar deal if given the chance, no?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards we're going to deal Garcia and Phillies dealt Happ, so it's hard to make any comparisons. Cards had no way to match that.

Mike Francis: It appears everyone is assuming Alan Craig will be recalled as soon as he is eligible. Have TLR and Mo confirmed that he will be, or are we destined to see a Jay/Stav/Winn combo for the rest of the year, regardless of how ridiculous that is?
Jeff Gordon: Craig's hot hitting in Memphis, after his six-RBI burst for the Cards last month, made him part of the trade equation. Barring injury or another move, the plan was to bring him up. He's a better defender than Nick and his hitting pedigree is better.

theCARDINALrule: Did the Cardinals put out feelers for some of the middle infielders that were rumored to be available? How serious of an attempt was made? And what was strauss talking about in his tweet that there was something attitude related about Ryan Ludwick's departure?
Jeff Gordon: Check with Joe on that with his next chat. As for middle infielders, the Cards showed interest in Gonzalez before that deal was made. Had the team moved Ryan to get Oswalt, that would have forced a move. But Lopez will soon move back to a middle infield role and the recent production of Ryan/Miles/Schumaker has been just fine.

mtomto: I predict the "Bring Back Stubby Clapp" fan club will attend the game tonight in a show of solidarity, voicing a need for middle infield help. What say you?
Jeff Gordon: The middle infielders have been raking pretty good lately. Not sure Stubby is needed.

Lawarence Marmie: What do you think of the moves that the Yanks made? Got three pretty decent players and are only responsible for about 4.5 mil combined without really giving up any blue chip prospects. New way of doing business in the Bronx?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what these guys have left. Cards fans won't miss Berkman, who hammered them over the years. Certainly the Yankees have no bench concerns left.

Lawarence Marmie: Is Brad Lidge just a head case who needs another change of scenery or do you think there's really something physically wrong with him this time?
Jeff Gordon: There's some wear and tear both mentally and physically. Fortunately the Philly fans are so supportive.

DL: OK, one last question and I'm done. What we've been seeing from Garcia seems like a bit of a surprise. I know that he was thought to be good but the guys been very consistant in a lot of ways. I know we can't predict the future but could he be better than was thought or when he comes back down to earth (which seems to be happening little by little) where will he land 3.00 ERA guy or?

Thanks again for taking time to answer our questions.

DL
Jeff Gordon: I see him as a steady 12 to 16 win guy with an ERA in the mid-3s. As a lefty, that gives him huge value. I don't think anybody expected him to have this much poise so quickly.

Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

Do you believe Devaney when he says that there were no financial restrictions put on him during free agency when the ownership situation was in limbo? Not that it isn't anymore, but free agency is pretty much over the most part.
Jeff Gordon: That's not the message agents got. But overall, the Rams were committed to going young this season and largely avoiding free agency. A year from now, when these guys either develop or don't, the next ownership team will have to make decide to take the plunge.

Of course, the potential of a lockout looms large . . .

rich: Ref an early question: In Saturday's game vs.

Jeff; That's exactly what happened. However the umpire at 2nd confused things as he called the runner coming to 2nd base out but it was a weak looking out call and then a second later displayed the safe sign. Then Pujohls come over to argue and that's when he called the runner coming from 1st out again! All clear right?!
:)
Jeff Gordon: No wonder you are confused. I'm confused. Did the ump at second miss the initial call at the plate?

rich: Nope he's the one that called it and infield fly!!!
Not sure what would happened if Pujohls had not not argued.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, that makes no sense. The only way Albert should be able to talk him into something if is the ump missed another umps call. Then the player can ask the ump to check with his cohorts.

HondoHill: Just some quick observations. Ike Davis of the Mets was Brett Wallace's teammate at Arizona State and out of the same draft class. He is doing already in the majors what Wallace thusfar has only done in the minors. I like Jon Jay, but he's not going to hit .380 forever. I wish the best for Allen Craig, but so far he has had one good game in the major leagues (on his birthday). Finally, all other reasoning pro and con aside, it is never any fun to see one's favorite position player (Luddy) traded. If others can't understand that, too bad. What if it happened to be your favorite? I just like the way Ryan Ludwick plays the game.
Jeff Gordon: If Wallace were in the Mets organization, he would have gotten an earlier call-up when the injuries hit. Now we'll see if he is the same kind of hitter as Davis, who was picked five spots behind Wallace. (Justin Smoak, picked ahead of Wallace, has struggled.)

Ludwick was a favorite to many, including the media. He was a class act and a wonderful story of perseverance. We're all hoping he fits into the Padres nucleus and get the long-term money he has earned.

Lawarence Marmie: Yo Gordo,

In terms of players needing to clear waivers since the deadline ended, are the Yankees last in line since they won the World Series last year?
Jeff Gordon: After the first month of the season, I believe waiver rankings are determined by the relative rankings at the claims are made.

rich: Ck. 'You Tube" I'm sure its on there.

That will be a play that I hope they show the umps in umpiring school on how to NOT make a call.
Jeff Gordon: Confusion is not becoming for umpires. They have to at least act decisive, eh?

theCARDINALrule: Are there any SS that are likely to clear waivers that would be an upgrade over Ryan long term? Further, are there any players that the Cardinals might target after waivers to PH/DH (hopefully) in the playoffs similar to the Dodgers' claim of Thome last season?
Jeff Gordon: Plenty of pinch-hitter types on waivers. I'm shocked Wigginton didn't get traded before the trade deadline, for instance.

Good long-term shortstops do not clear waivers. If Ryan doesn't make the most of his remaining time this month, then he'll have to compete with T. Greene next spring. Perhaps an offseason deal (Drew?) could happen too.

Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

What are the odds that the Rams go into the season with the exact same backups for Jackson that they did a year ago?
Jeff Gordon: Zilch, because Samkon Gado was one of the back-ups last season.

Garrett: Thanks for taking my question,

Is there any chance OJ is back next season? Is the only way if he has a pro bowl type year? Besides Bradford and Jackson, I think he is our best player.

Btw, I looked the rams roster from the end of the 2008 season, and the have gotten rid of 41 players from that team. I'm not sure if that's a big number but it seems like alot.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, Atogwe figures to be around for a while.

That's it for this week. Talk to you next week!

Rambunctious: 1)What are the odds we sign Denario Alexander? Supposedly he passed his physical today with the Rams.

2)What are the odds of Saffold staying at LT?

3)Any ideas on a short list of waiver wire rbs, or possible rb trades?

4)Will Brian Westbrook wait until training camps are almost over to report to whatever team he chooses?
Thanks in advance!!
Jeff Gordon: 1)What are the odds we sign Denario Alexander? Supposedly he passed his physical today with the Rams. Good chance.

2)What are the odds of Saffold staying at LT? I'm not a fan of Smith playing there, so I hope he gets a good look.

3)Any ideas on a short list of waiver wire rbs, or possible rb trades? Brian Westbrook is still on the list. Aside from him, the others are still with their teams.

4)Will Brian Westbrook wait until training camps are almost over to report to whatever team he chooses? Why risk injury? He'll have to sign soon, though, to make sure he has a spot.

See you next week!
