NorCalCards: So what's up w/ Albert and all the poor pitch selection. He seems to have more a a limp to his walk these days. Is his hammy that weak? Am I spoiled to think he could be doing better w/ RISP? Is it simply a matter of time for our 3,4, 5, & 6 hitters to get in sync? Is there not enough adrenline yet in the middle of the schedule? We should be burying the Reds and the rest of the pretenders of the Central.
Jeff Gordon: Albert has had nagging foot and leg injuries, which is his norm. But his offense isn't that far off. His eight walks in seven games suggest his discipline is returning. He has 11 RBI in 17 games this month. He didn't come through Sunday in his one big chance, but he got ahead in the count and put himself in a position to succeed.
bryancathey: Hi Sir. If interleague play is to show the National League cities how the American League plays & to show the AL cities how the NL plays WHY dont they use the DH in NL cities & let the pitchers bat in AL cities during intreleague play???? That way the FANS from both leagues could see how the other league plays baseball. THANK YOU. Bryan
Jeff Gordon: The fans see the differences when AL teams play in NL parks and vice-versa. That is sufficient.
dub the beachcomber: gordo, i live at pebble and have never seen the course play more difficult. however, scores were in line with other opens so some pros should quit whining. poa annua is hard to putt just like bermuda. one golfer was poised and proficient and i speak of st louis' mr. langly. what a building block for a career! top twenty was awesome.
i know this is an old subject, but it sure looks like albert is pressing and swinging at pitcher's pitches. is it possible that there is a pujols/holiday rivalry developing? thanks gordo
Jeff Gordon: Competition between top players is a good thing. Albert wants to see Matt do well because then the team will win. The guy is hyper-competitive. And Matt seems to have a personality that allows him to ride shotgun for Albert.
dub the beachcomber: gordo, it seems like this cardinal team has yet to gel. they remind me of some yankee teams made up of lots of individuals playing ball. is there unrest in the locker room? is it time for tlr to assert himself? what happened last september that seems to be carrying over into this season. a superior team seems to have turned mediocre. any theories? thanks, gordo.
Jeff Gordon: The team pulled out of a nasty little downturn caused by the simultaneous loss of two starting pitchers and two key hitters (Freese and Rasmus). Now those two are back it appears that most of the offensive players are hitting at the same time. Molina has to get going, then it will be a party.
The team came home, won two series and moved 1 1/2 games up in the division. The one thing the team still hasn't done is go on a big winning streak, but that may have to wait until Penny returns to bolster the rotation.
Gmartin: Halak gives the Blues a good young goalie but he did not come cheap. Eller has a chance to be a very good second line player. Schultz is a solid young forward. I think the trade is a good one but it is similar to trading good prospects for a starting pitcher in baseball. Sometimes these trades work out for both teams and sometimes they do not. Do you like it?
The trade with Colorado is the player we got a possible player for the Blues or a minor league type guy?
Jeff Gordon: Hensick is a depth guy, but in this organization that means he could end up in the supporting cast. The Halak deal has drawn universal praise around the NHL for the Blues. He has a chance to be a strong No. 1 goaltender. Eller could become a first-line player, but success or failure all starts in goal. If Halak continues his progression as a Blue, then this will be a good deal regardless of what Eller does.
Gmartin: Nice to see Holiday get going this weekend. Lets see if he can keep it up on the road trip. I would like to see Molina and Pujols get more days off. Pujols is clarly not 100% with his legs. Molina does not need to play 135 plus games. LaRue is a solid backup so play him once or twice a week. Agree?
Jeff Gordon: I like Jason a lot, yes. And Molina did get too much work earlier this season when the Cards were counting on his bat. Now he is in a real offensive funk. Let's see if the off-day after a day off helps refresh him. As for Albert, if he can walk, he'll play. Nobody can convince him to take more days off.
Gmartin: The Rams offensive line. Is it going to be health? If yes, is it a solid line or still a poor line? Perhaps unknown is a better answer?
Jeff Gordon: I'll go with C), unknown. The unit showed promise last year until the injuries hit. Now Smith has lost developmental time at LT -- and he hasn't proven he can play over there. I like the depth up the middle, but the tackle situation is dicey.
dub the beachcomber: this recession and the resulting turmoil has changed our perception of sports figures and the huge dollars they make along with the profits they generate. here at the u.s. open, tiger woods once again showed his rare sense of entitlement by whining about the greens. i inspected several and i have played pool on similar surfaces. granted poa annua comes with it's own set of challenges, but so does bermuda. tiger should donate his check to the illinois golf team. they were represented by a true champion.
my question. do the card players feel this same sense of entitlement when they reach millionaire status? how do baseball players compare to players in other sports? thanks gordo
Jeff Gordon: With giant money comes a sense of entitlement for most athletes on some level. That is human nature. Money changes people to some degree, as does fame. Most athletes become more guarded after breaking into the big time -- which is totally understandable -- and some become ridiculous.
Pixelhead: Gordo, do you know if there is nay effort being put forth to improve the defense and throwing accuracy of Rasmus? He has cost the Cards so many runs this year on bad throws and horrible approaches to balls in the outfield. Opposing third base coaches are pretty much waving everyone around third on balls to center field because they know he is a liability out there.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: He has the tools to have a "plus" outfield arm, he just needs to be sharper on the mental side and focus on the cutoff. Clearly the kid is pressing when it comes to throwing. Right now that is the only remaining issue in his game. The other pieces have fallen in nicely.
bleedred24: Jeff,
some people say we will compete in the NFC west this year. Where do you think the Rams will end up and what is a reasonable number of wins we can expect them to get?
Jeff Gordon: This team has a lot of needs as it stands today. If this team doesn't fill those needs, it might win just 2 or 3 games. These team needs to beef up as opportunities arise. The lack of settled ownership has kept that from happening.
Andrew Sampson: Hi Jeff
What's gotten into Matt Holiday?
Sure the Halak trade makes for a splashy headline, but shouldn't the Blues still try to improve the rest of team? What should the Blues do with their first round pick?
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see the Blues pick a forward with that first pick, given their organizational depth on D. But they won't pass on a much better player just to do that in the first round. That is never a good idea.
I would expect Armstrong to be active this summer. We may not see another blockbuster, but he needs to bolster the front lines.
Toadstool: I am a little confused about some comments made in the aftermath of the Halak trade. Chris Mason's agent, Tom Laidlaw, said he would not not have handled the negotiations/trade in the same fashion that the Blues did. What was he expecting the Blues to do?
On a side note, were Laidlaw and John Davidson teammates with the Rangers?
Jeff Gordon: I'm sure Tom felt the Blues misled Mason into thinking a deal was forthcoming while Armstrong pursued possible trades. That is was unfortunate. But . . . Mason was weeks away from free agency, so the Blues had time to explore options. And perhaps had Chris been more amenable to a short-term deal, he would still be here.
We know this: Armstrong can play poker.
Yes, Laidlaw and Davidson were teammates.
Josh: Jeff,
Name a couple of forwards that the Blues might be going after (via trade or free agency).
Thank You.
Jeff Gordon: The possibilities are endless. The Blackhawks will have to clear out some forwards due to cap issues and ESPN.com suggested Andrew Ladd as a possible target. He's not a star, but could help more than Winchester did. I wouldn't mind seeing Lee Stempniak get another chance here, if the dollars were moderate.
Chris: Has Matt changed anything recently in his batting workouts with McGwire?
Jeff Gordon: The guy has been hitting line drives all year when the bases were empty, so his timing wasn't far off. More than anything, he was probably trying too hard. A big weekend will help him relax. As he noted after the game Sunday, his six-year track record was reassuring through the lean weeks.
Jason: Gordo, Much has been written about Rasmus and his struggle finding a comfort zone in the clubhouse his rookie year. If I'm not mistaken Bret Wallace made some comments after being traded hinting at it being hard for rookies to fit in though I'm not sure how much time he actually spent there. It also took some time for Brendan Ryan to settle down and fit in... and show up on time. But Skip Schumaker seems to have gotten along just fine since day one and is respected in the clubhouse. I even remember Tony giving him a fatherly shoulder squeeze as he passed by Skip just before a game in 2006. Did Skip have his stuff together since he got here or did he go through some similar pains as the Cards more recent rookies?
Jeff Gordon: Schumaker went up and down from Memphis seven times, he endured the same trials as any other young player trying to make a big league team. As for Wallace, he is in his third organization and he is still trying to earn his first shot. Making the jump to the majors and sticking there is difficult.
rays06: Gordo, a lot of talk about instant replay in baseball, but i don't think people have thought it through. it could only work in an expanded role with no baserunners. Runners, react, go to next base, stay, tag up or whatever based on what the ump calls. if plays are reviewed and reversed then there umps would have to determine where the baserunners would have been an stuff like that. would totally ruin the game putting runners back on bases based on speculation when they may have scored, advanced or even tagged out trying to advance. i think they should leave well enough alone
Jeff Gordon: I would limit replay to one appeal per manager per game, perhaps with a second appeal becoming available if the first one succeeded. That keeps it orderly. As for where do the runners go, umpires have to make those sorts of decisions when balls go out of play and so forth. They can handle it.
danandjonelle: Do you know what kind of offer we have made to supplemental draft choice Tyrell Jenkins, the Texas high school pitcher?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting case. He has the football option there, so he can command well above-slot money. Many times such negotiations don't take form until late. Baylor football fans have a reason to fret. I expect the Cards to make him a very attractive offer. Luhnow wants to build an impressive draft record and he has DeWitt's full support.
Here is a link to a favorable scouting report: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=1456
Nick N: Can you provide an update on both Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse returning to the starting rotation?
Jeff Gordon: No update until either guy is at least back to pitching simulated games. Mozeliak hopes Penny will return by the All-Star break, but that is just a hope at this point. Lohse is anybody's guess, since no pitcher has ever had that surgery before.
Nick N: Yadier seems to be in a bit of a funk at the plate these days. Have you heard anything of why that is or any reasons to be concerned that he will not snap out of it?
Jeff Gordon: Every player fights such slumps. This season it has bit almost everybody. Now it's Yadier's turn. Luckly, La Rue looks very good this year and I wouldnn't mind see him start more games.
HockeyBob: Hey Gordo,
Saw you and J.V with Doug Vaughn last night. Very presentable the both of you were. Who said you ONLY had faces for radio???LOL
Hey, a couple things I wanted to bring up.
1) The Halak deal: Ive been saying this for a while now, but somehow no one seems to be paying attention, but since the last lockout, Stanley Cups aren't being won any more by having phenominal/out of this world goalies, but rather a good, sound, balanced offensive attack and a blueline that can move the puck around a bit AND an goalie who 'just happens to get hot' at the right time. I mean look at Giguiere for Anaheim, Ward for Carolina, Osgood for Detroit...don't think ANY of them are HOF candidates do you?
Halak may or may not prove to be a great goalie, time will tell. What the Blues really need to do, is let guys like Berglund, Backes, Perron, Oshie, -even Boyes- develop under a system that preaches an offensive attack that allows taking some chances and let the guys like E.J, Polak, Pietriangelo, and even Jackman do their jobs and allow for -some mistakes-. Halak, like Blues goalies before him, WILL let some bad goals go by, but will also be able to 'grow' with this young, but 'up and coming' team,
What do you think???
2)Being a Mizzou grad, had this Big - 12/10/8 thing all blown up, and being Mizzou was one of the 1st to be offered a chance to move to the Big - 10/12/16, would you have disavowed any association you previously had with Mike Alden"s school???
Have a great day Jeff. See you soon.
HockeyBob
Jeff Gordon: There is a balance to strike with the young Blues. You want them to assert themselves at the offensive end a fully develop their skills. But they have to play responsible hockey or go play no-check hockey in Germany or Switzerland. None of those guys are so talented to have free reign like a Kovalchuk (whom the Devils reeled in) or Ovechkin. They can't blame coaches or systems for their struggles last season. They need to learn how to take care of business at home. Period. It's time to be big boys.
Had Mizzou gone to the Big Ten, I would have endured the change. In many ways it could have been good for the school, despite the potential demise of the KU rivalry.
Ramfan4life: Personally, I think the offensive line might be out most important group going into this year. Could you shed some light on the injury situation with our offensive line, and given who is injured (Setterstrom, Saffold, Smith to name a few) what will our offensive line look like by the end of July? Who can we expect to go into camp healthy? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Setterstrom is likely finished for the year, which could preclude any more NFL comebacks. Smith's toe cost him a little OTA work time, but didn't need surgery. Bell and Saffold are also expected back for training camp, but Roger Allen III will be on the shelf.
Nick N: Would you endorse the Redbirds acquisition of Scott Podsednik? I see that he will turn age 35 next year and will be a free agent in 2011 with the Royals holding a $2MM club option with a $100K buyout but it can be voided with 525 PAs?
It seems like with the Royals out of contention, the Cardinals could benefit greatly from adding such a savvy veteran who has speed, could bat lead off and be in the mix as a legit 4th outfielder. Also, what would it likely cost us to obtain such a player, and could cash be added to sweeten the pot versus a higher touted minor league player?
Jeff Gordon: Randy Winn has done fine as the fourth outfielder. Jon Jay was fine as the fourth OF before that. Don't see a need here at all. Now, if there is a chance to add more power, then the Cards could rethink things.
SollyHemusFan: Hi Gordo. Have you noticed the difference in pujols play & attitude since the holliday trade last summer. Alberts production has deminished somewhat compared to what it has been. He's swinging at pitches he never used too. Could it be he's trying to prove he's still the big man on campus. I think that there's a jealous factor involved. Alberts showing more bad temper than he used too. I'm not the only one thats noticed this. Just wonder if you have an opinion on it. Thanks a lot.
Jeff Gordon: Albert has always been a cranky competitor. He doesn't live to miss on his RBI opportunities, as he did during stretches of this season. As for jealousy, he is The Man. He could double the money Matt got in his deal and he knows it.
Nick N: Jason Motte is steadily gaining the confidence of TLR and DD to come into game as the set up men and now even to close when Ryan Franklin is not available or like this weekend gets off to a slow start to start an inning. With Jason throwing so hard, can he be utilized for 2 or 3 games on consecutive nights more times than not? Certainly, Franklin is being kept away from working three straight nights, and Kyle McC seems now to be behind Motte as #1 set up man when Motte is ready to go. Do I have an accurate read or not on all three of them as of right now?
Jeff Gordon: Pitching three nights in a row is hard on anybody, but, in general, Motte seems to have the physical make-up to handle the closing role. He has made an interesting adjustment to add more heat to this fastball. Rather than shorten up his delivery with men on base, he is reaching back for full velocity. That has helped him in critical situations. He is moving closer to becoming the Closer in Waiting.
KidTwist: Any idea how negotiations with the Card's top picks Cox, Jenkins, and Austin Wilson are going? I know all will be tough signs (Wilson especially) but I would think they wouldn't draft these guys without thinking they could sign them.
Jeff Gordon: As we saw last year, it takes time to secure players who have options. I believe the Cards expect to sign all but one of their picks. Again, Luhnow has the full support of DeWitt and Luhnow very much wants to build a strong track record after getting the cold shoulder from Jocketty.
Nick N: It does seem like Albert Pujols is distracted this season by his own pending free agency status. Never have we seen him in his career swing at so many bad pitches and strike out like he has this year. Do you agree this situation is now having a profound impact on his overall performance? Also, do you forsee there should or will be attempts by the team where Albert and his agent where they will be receptive to quietly talking about an extension in mid-season? Certainly super stars Joe Mauer and Ryan Howard have done so this season.
Jeff Gordon: Getting the contract out of the way would be good for everybody involved. Both sides should reconsider the wait 'til the season is over approach. Albert is taking some risk by pushing this off. Around baseball, GMs have become increasingly wary about giving big long-term money to players nearing or into their 30s. Even Albert could be impacted by that trend.
sddeck: Do you think think the excitement surrounding at&t's new iPhone 4 has anything to do with the way Holliday has appeared to turn it around recently?
Jeff Gordon: Good one!
Jim S.: Gordo, question about Brendan Ryan's swing. When he swings and misses, he's always off balance and seems to have to do his little bunny hop so as not to fall down. Good hitters, even just average hitters never seem to be off balance when they swing. Hasn't Big Mac noticed how off balance BR's body is when he's swinging? You have to have a good foundation during your swing and not be jumping at it. I really like Ryan, love the way he plays, but hate the way he hits. And keep up the good work. Enjoy reading your stuff!
Jeff Gordon: Lunging around is not a good sign. Brendan has fought it at the plate all season, although recently he has shown a bit more promise there.
jdog: I have been reading all of these blogs since early June, and some of them have people saying what they think we should do during the offseason now that we have Halak. I was wondering what you think will happen or what you think the Blues will do from draft picks to resigning to free agency. I know its a little broad, sorry, but just wanted to hear your input.
THANKS
JDOG
Jeff Gordon: I'd still like to see the 'D' get an overhaul with another veteran (besides Weaver) exiting to create room for new blood. As for additions, this team needs help up front. Much of the progress will have to come from within. The team is largely set. But another scoring line forward would do a world of good, especially with Eller off the depth chart.
Lee: Jeff,
There is no way the Cards should leave the rotation as is. The next few weeks with the rotation like this could harm the Cards starters later on. Do you think there is any way they will add a decent starter from outside the organization this week? I don't think it hurts to trade several blocked or marginal prospects. Jay, Greene, Hawksworth...
Thanks,
Lee
Jeff Gordon: The next few weeks ARE tricky, as I note elsewhere on the site. But trading a minor prospect for a short-term fix would be OK, but making a major move wouldn't make sense unless Penny has a setback. Right now it appears Suppan is on course to fill the No. 5 slot once Penny returns.
Getting from here to there will be a challenge. Too Ottavino didn't show more.
sprinter1985: I know the stats aren't terrible, but are we witnessing the beginning of Chris Carpenter's decline?
Take it or leave it-this is the year Adam Wainwright starts Game 1 of a playoff series.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, Wainwright could be No. 1. But Carpenter has been outstanding. Last year's success was off the charts. This is a more normal Cy Young-type year. He had a nice six-start stretch where he was lights out and got little run support.
sprinter1985: What will happen sooner-The Blues win the Stanley Cup or the Rams win the Super Bowl?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues are much closer.
sprinter1985: Any interest in Ian Snell as a Duncan project? A castoff who actually might have his best years ahead of him instead of a guy in his mid to late thirties...
Jeff Gordon: It appears Ian is willing to work out his woes at Class AAA ball, but that could be a nice minor deal, with Seattle eating a bit of salary to make it happen. At least he could pitch right away, like Suppan.
donald box: Hey Jeff do you think that Albert and Molina need more time off. espescially Molina he looks like a tired catcher.Do you think they should bring up Anderson and let him get some playing time.
Jeff Gordon: LaRue looks fine. Give him a few more starts. Tony pushed Yadier a bit earlier this year when his bat was needed.
Michael: The Cardinals have their hands tied due to injuries to starting pitchers Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse. Payroll will be tight for years to come since we have a good percentage tied up with Pujols and Holliday (and others). Looking ahead to next year, will low-cost option Kyle McClellan be a sure-fire lock for the starting rotation? Seems like it it easier to replace a component in the bullpen versus a starting pitcher. Thanks for your consideration.
Jeff Gordon: That is a possibility, for sure, since the team could plug Salas into the bullpen and be fine. Ottavino could come up and fill a bullpen role while he learns the trade.
Jared: I was wondering your overall thoughts on the trade for Halak and how much many will be required to sign him?
Jeff Gordon: This will be a big money deal, but then Mason wasn't significant cash. This salary depends on whether either side wants a longer-term deal that buys into unrestricted free agency. The Blues have no cap issues, so this will get done.
josh weisel: hey gordo now that the blues traded for halak and look to be trying to take the team to the next level do you feel the blues are done making big moves this off season or do you think we will see them make another move at the draft?
Jeff Gordon: The core of this team is set, but the Blues need to create a spot for another young D-man, IMO, and they need some help up front still.
oskeewowow: Any possibility on getting another quality starter this year?
Jeff Gordon: Sure -- if Penny can't return soon, Suppan fails to progress or somebody else gets hurt.
Chris: Gordo,
How much better does Halak make the Blues? Should I be concerned about his KHL suitors? And finally, will the BLues make a trade, or free agent signing to acquire a solid goalscorer this summer? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The KHL hasn't had much luck wooing goaltenders in their prime. The Blues have already made Halak the face of its franchise, so there is every intention to sign him soon.
mightymike105: Good Monday Jeff,
Now that the Big 12 (10) remains I wonder if anything really got solved? Just going off what I've read, heard on the box and watching a bit of TV it simply appears Texas got even stronger and mastered this situation to it's full advantage. The rich got even wealthier. Honestly Jeff what's to stop the threat of the Big 12 breaking up in let's say 5-7 if the status quo basically remains in place? As time goes on won't schools still be unhappy? If I learned nothing else I learned football is king. That's where the biggest bucks are. If MU ever wants to achieve parity with TX and OU we have to beat these guys sometime. Someway, somehow we have to do this.
Jeff Gordon: I agree totally.
mightymike105: Gordo,
Was that golf or Surviver yesterday? Man that course was brutal to all.
Jeff Gordon: Except for the Parkway South kid, of course. P-South, you know! Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
mightymike105: Jeff,
Now that Matt's heated up with the weather I wonder how long before he's moved back to clean-up? I just don't see him the remainder of the season in the 2 slot. Although I would not mind it.
Jeff Gordon: TLR will move Holliday back once he is on a sustained roll -- unless Ludwick fall apart in the No. 4 hole.
JeffRey T.: Hey Jeff,
Got a couple questions for you today...
1) Can we finally get people to stop panicking over Matt Holliday? I know one series does not make a season, but it has been his track record to start slow and heat up with the weather. Is it really a move to the #2 spot in the order or could we have expected this from the cleanup spot as well?
2) Does Montreal know something about Halak the Blues don't? I realize he's due a payday, but this guy was amazing in upset playoff series wins over the Caps and Pens.
3) I'm a Mizzou alum and I've heard a lot of talk about this new TV deal meaning the Tigers will be "forced" to play higher levels of comeptition in the non-conference, as that is what it will take to get on TV. I see it as just the opposite. With games every year against OU and Texas, I see the non-conference foes becoming even weaker as the Tigers aren't looking to get beat up and potentially beaten before conference play even begins.
Jeff Gordon: The No. 2 spot helped Matt, since it was clear he was pressing. Plus the move into that spot jabbed his pride a bit, which is not a bad thing.
Halak may not be the second coming of Hasek, since we're talking about one spring here. But his overall track record since coming to North America is encouraging. I can't believe that team kept Price over him. Carey has proven his inconsistency.
Playing both Texas and Oklahoma every year will certain boost the Mizzou computer ranking, so I can see this team being very careful outside of conference -- making sure that any tough non-conference game offers a big payoff, both in TV and at the gate.
Let's put it this way, if any team beats out both Oklahoma and Texas to win the Big 12 (minus two), it will have good BCS standing -- so scheduling up in the non-conference won't matter a whole lot.
greg: gordo,
with big mac not being let into the hall, do you think tony will activate him for a game to renew his eligability?
greg
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't be totally shocked if Tony let Mac pinch hit in September, just because the guy looks so good in the cage. Plus that is the sort of thing TLR does with guys he is really fond of.
IL Blues: Hey Gordo,
Have you heard any more rumors on the blues making some type of move on a forward? Ryan Malone, Spezza, Gagne?
Jeff Gordon: Spezza appears headed elsewhere. Malone has a big salary, so the team would move carefully there. And Gagne's injury history is a concern. But never say never. I certainly didn't expect the big play for Halak. I'm shocked Montreal moved him and I'm shocked the Blues won the bidding.
Iowa Cards Fan: Gordo:
Since you posed the question, I'd like you to answer it: Can the Cards get by on 3.5 starters? i.e., what would you do in this situation? With Holliday pounding again and the Reds struggling, this would be the perfect time to build up a sizeable lead in the NL Central. We need pitching to do that.
Jeff Gordon: The ideal solution would to have somebody magically arrive from Memphis or Springfield to give the team a quality start the next time the No. 5 slot comes up. That guy could take in for Salas and eat some innings. MacLane got crushed his last time out, but perhaps he could steal the team six innings. Dickson has had the best year at Memphis, but he is pretty green.
If I'm Mozeliak, I wait a few more days to see where Penny is. If he isn't rebuilding his arm strength this week, then he may have to go pull a guy off the pile and create a spot on the 40-man roster somehow.
Fafu: Jeff
Is Dave Duncan's work with Suppan just another example of his ability as a pitching coach? I mean is Dunc that good of a pitching coach? Time and again, he takes pitchers other teams have given up on and at the very least makes them serviceable and in some cases dominant again. Is he in the Hall of Fame?
And put your Hockey Guy hat on, is Halak the missing piece to at least get us into the playoffs and does he have the talent to consistently (not just one run like last year) make us a playoff threat?
Cheers
Fafu
Jeff Gordon: Halak has a nice track record since coming to North America: The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the ECHL, the AHL and then the NHL. He isn't an overnight success. That gives me confidence that he can be a "plus" goaltender, one capable of helping the Blues take the next step.
Duncan is a great pitching coach, but turning pitchers around is a group effort. Bullpen coach, catcher, other veteran pitchers -- everybody helps create the atmosphere for turnarounds.
smagsmoker: Hey Gordo,
I know that Tony LaRussa always talks about winning series and the players now spout that too. With that said, in 3 game series where we won the first two of the series, we are 0-6 in trying to sweep. The manager doesn't seem to go for the kill. Yesterday why is Hawksworth starting the eighth in a tie game? He flirted with danger a couple times and we weren't exactly hitting the cover off the ball, so one run was probably going to be the difference maker. I guess my question is he doesn't normally put Hawksworth in or leave him in a late tie game scenario, so he appears to manage differently or almost concede a game at times because we already won the series. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: He left Hawksworth in because of the danger for extra innings and the amount of work the bullpen has gotten of late. The Cards are stretching him out, for better or worse. The team needs a long guy in this situation and the team is trying to make Blake that guy.
Tony would love to close out sweeps, but he can't pinch hit himself for Pujols to get that tying run home from third. That's up to the players. And by now you now that Albert doesn't like to lose.
smagsmoker: Hey Gordo,
The Cardinals can't seem to go on a streak and put some consecutive wins together. When LaRussa wants to rest guys and play some of the subs, why doesn't he do it when Caprenter or Wainwright start, since there will be more wiggle room and less runs needed to get a win, rather than Suppan, Ottavino, or Walters where you probably need 4-6 runs to win?
Jeff Gordon: In the 162-game grind, you don't want to compromise your aces. When they pitch, you want to win. Period. For the most part Tony will play his "A" team for those guys. As for Sunday's game, he sat the slumping Molina and gave Lopez a start over Freese. Lopez's career numbers suggest that is an OK tradeoff. Albert had a chance to change that game and didn't. It's not like the team put the game in the hands of Winn or Stavinoha.
Sam S.: With all the talk over the new goaltender situation for the blues, the real question still remains: How are the Blues going to boost scoring? With one of the worst powerplays in the league last year, do you see a trade or free agent signing in the works for a high-profile veteran?
Jeff Gordon: Don't hold your breath for a high-profile guy. Backes, Perron, Oshie and Berglund can at least double last year's output -- and could Boyes. That is a start. I look for at least one more scorer of some description to come aboard. And I look for the team to inject more skill on the blue line, where the Blues got woeful production last year.
STLguy3472: Gordo,
Casual hockey fan here; what is the best part of Halak's game? Worst part?
At what chance do you put 1 more big move up Armstrongs sleeve?
Thanks,
Matt
Jeff Gordon: Good news: Great reflexes, makes acrobatic saves.
Bad news: Small guy, countering the trend toward big stand-up goaltenders who fill the net.
BillP.: Hey Jeff, is there still any talk going on of Winnipeg getting their hockey team back? And what about Kansas City? Are they still trying hard to acquire a franchise? Also, what do you think the outlook is on Seattle getting an NBA team again? Thanks and Have a good week!
Jeff Gordon: Movement is afoot in all three cities to get teams. And all three could succeed in the next five years, due to the damage the economic collapse had on sports teams. Lots of teams have unstable ownership, including the Blues.
rheins4u: Hello Jeff, I hope you had a great weekend. I have a Blues question. Do you see the Blues making a trade before the 1rst to try and lock up a forward? What would make more sense now, trade or free agent? Since the Blues made the first move last week and now Nashville is dealing. Do you feel there will be more presure on the GMs to make a move?
Thank You for the Chat
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Many new GMs in the league right now and some of them are eager to make deals. Expect more trades before the draft, then before free agency starts. And by the end of the summer, there will still be some decent players unsigned. Every team is fighting either cap concerns or budgeting concerns. Every team is weighing expenditures carefully.
rheins4u: Hello Jeff, I have anothe Blues question. What type of player or what role do you see T.J. Hensick playing? What style of player is he? Do you think he will make the team out of camp? What line would you put him on?
Thanks
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Depth guy. He'll have a chance to get into the supporting cast. But I expect Armstrong to make at least one impact addition up front.
Mitch: Gordo,
Thank you for taking my question.
With the success that Holliday has had recently do you think the two spot will be a permanent spot for him in the batting order? I have always thought that he was a prototypical 2 hole hitter.
I also think the three best hitters on the team should bat 2-3-4 and not 3-4-5. What is you take on this?
Jeff Gordon: I believe a guy with Holliday's power needs to hit after Albert, not in front of him. This is a temporary deal. As for the order, the No. 5 slot needs to go to a run producer. The No. 2 slot should go to a guy getting on base. Two different jobs. So I'd put the best hitters 3-4-5.
rheins4u: Hello Jeff, last question of the day. I read that the Blues signed Matt D'Agostini on Friday. I did not see much of him but I would say I was not blown away by him. What line would he go too? The third with Steen and Backes? What style of player is he or what role does he fill on the team?
Thank you for answering my questions.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: If Backes doesn't become a first-line player, this team is in HUGE troubles. He needs to go back to the wing and attack the net. Other teams loves this guy. It's time for THIS team to maximize his production.
As for Matt, he'll fight for a fringe spot. He looks like a player, but he hasn't sustained much at the NHL level.
lawdog: Thanks for taking the time to give us glimpses inside the Rams organization, Gordo.
Is there anything new on the Atogwe situation? It seems like our FO should have a pretty clear idea as to whether he's getting a better offer somewhere else, or has renewed negotiations with our team.
Anything new with Safford and/or Smith?
Are there any players we might be looking to draft in the Supplemental Draft coming up?
Jeff Gordon: Training camp is nearly six weeks away, so Smith and Saffold will use that time to get ready for camp. Both are expected to be back at camp.
Given Atogwe's inability to land a job elsewhere, folks at Rams Park expect him to re-sign here.
Since Westbrook doesn't want to play for a 1-15 team, the Rams ought to draft a RB. Jackson's current back-ups are unimpressive.
Cards4520: Thanks for taking the questions.
I heard Holliday has been distant the past couple of days. Do you think people booing got to him? Is there a a disconnect in the locker room w/ players?
Jeff Gordon: He made himself available to the media after Sunday's game and seemed like his usual self. But he's a guy who goes about his business without a lot of fanfare. His outward demeanor is quite different from what Pujols shows.
LawrenceKScardsfan: Jeff,
Do you think management has completely ruled out the pursuit of another quality starter? With Oswalt, Lee, Lilly, and Sheets all rumored on the market, what would it take to land one of these guys? Am I wrong to think that bringing Lee to St. Louis virtually guarantees a World Series appearance (not to mention that it deprives the Dodgers and the Mets of acquiring this excellent left hander)?
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: But what would Seattle want in return? Garcia and Motte? High-end pitchers command a big price. I don't see the Cards in position to deal for such players -- especially with a strong four-man rotation in place.
MichiCARDSFANgan: What is Cardinals record for Sunday home games since 1998 when they started wearing the bird on bat cap variation? Just an observation but it sure seems they lose more than they win. Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: No idea on that one . . .
LawrenceKScardsfan: Jeff,
Why is it that the Cards seem to always get the B-side American League teams to play in interleague matchups? Why have we not been able to play the Yankees, Red Sox, Tampa Bay, Texas, White Sox, etc. Especially the Yankees (wasn't our last game against them in the 1964 World Series?). Instead, we get the Blue Jays, Mariners, Angels, Royals, and Athletics. Come on... Bring on them Yankees!
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Initially interleague play was a division vs. divisional geographical thing, so you saw a lot of the AL Central. Now the scheduling is more diverse. As for the Yankees, not sure TLR is dying to face a team with 2-plus times his payroll on a regular basis.
Rahb: Jeff, would you agree that a person that quarterbacked a football team, and/or a player that was a point guard on a basketball team (Not saying Matt was a point guard) would show a calmer demeanor than someone that just played baseball, and learned to hop, skip, and admire the long fly ball? Someone that was never in a leadership position organizing plays can be the more flamboyant player. Wouldn't Holliday's demeanor keeping his emotions under control be very understandable? I see nothing wrong with Matt's demeanor.
Jeff Gordon: Brett Favre is more flamboyant than, say, Chris Carpenter. When Marc Bulger provided calm leadership for the Rams, he was accused of not caring. Fans wanted him to be Peyton Manning, who thrashes about as if on fire during games.
Fans see what they want to see. As long as a guy competes and rises to tough occasions, the theatrical stuff doesn't matter either way.
Eric: Doesn't it make sense to shop Bryan Anderson? He obviously doesn't have a future in STL as long as Yadi is healthy and under contract. It seems like a left handed hitting catcher that hits for average and some pop with improving defensive skills would be appealing to some teams.
Jeff Gordon: Lot of great young catching prospects out there. Not sure he has much values, especially coming off a major injury. IF he develops into an impact player and IF Molina re-ups for the long haul, then that will be a consideration. Maybe Anderson just become a handy back-up.
Peter Nincompoop: Jeff,
Is Brewer totally untradeable, or could they help out Tampa with some salary relief and get Ryan Malone for Brewer and a pick?
Pete
Jeff Gordon: A salary for salary deal is always possible. Yzerman has seen a lot of Brewer, though, so that may not be a good thing.
HenniganFox: So much for a mild two week vacation for Brad Penny. Loshe is done for the year. How does the STL media not chuckle when injury reports are released?
Jeff Gordon: I've learned to disregard projected return dates. The Cards ought to quit giving them. If I was Mozeliak, I would say the same thing every time: "When he's back, he's back. In the meantime, we'll explore all options to help our team."
Blab: Jeff, has there ever been discussion to scrap interleague play as now done for a schedule of year long interleague play. Just schedule teams regardless of league affiliation, plus drop the DH entirely. All games count for record in standings.
Jeff Gordon: There is not THAT much interest in interleague play. The owners like keeping the leagues distinct from each other. That adds to the popularity of the All-Star Game and World Series.
nickn: Is it really working out deeper within the organization (players, coaches and front office) for Big Mac as its looks to fans on the surface?
Jeff Gordon: McGwire is less than halfway into his first season as coach. The team is in first place. Fans are worked into a frenzy on this issue. The organization is not.
nickn: If you were to supply an educated guess on the power hitter most likely to be acquired by the Cards this season in a more significant deal, who would be on your short list?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have a set lineup, with the exception of the Ryan-Schumaker-Lopez rotation in the middle infield. Barring injury, I don't see the team adding a power hitter.
slothd3: Any news on Atogwe? Thanks for you chats
Jeff Gordon: Again, the expectation at Rams Park is that he'll re-sign here. But with this organizational, you never know.
FunBobby: Good afternoon,
I like Holliday in the 2 spot right now to get his bat going but ultimately we will need him in the clean up spot. My question for you is why not put Freese in the 2 hole when no one is struggling. Hes been hitting for high average (and good OBP) and has doubles power but not power to the extent Ludwick has. The have Ludwick bat 5th clearly a great RBI guy, Colby 6th and go from there. Sounds good to me.
Also, hire Tony Rasmus to be Colby's coach. It would be well worth it.
Thank you for your time.
Jeff Gordon: I like Freese lower in the order. And since Ludwick is a fastball hitter, I like him in the No. 2 spot. Normally I'd like to see a speedier guy in that role, but I think we'll see a lot of Ryan hitting No. 9 and Schumaker leading off this year, eliminating the possibility of a better runner there.
nickn: I believe Brad Penny has a deal with the Cardinals that he can not be offered arbitration if he is classified as a type A free agent during the off season. Assuming this is true, and taking into account his most recent injury he most certainly will be classified as a Plan B agent. As such, will the Cardinals be inclined to off him arbitration assuming he returns to decent form like where he was before he sustained the injury? Also what are your odds on Ryan Ludwick being offered arbitration as well?
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick is an asset. The team may not be able to afford him, Pujols and Holliday for the long haul, but I see the protecting that asset in the short-term. Letting him walk for nothing would be silly.
Still a lot of ball left for Penny. A huge finish could still earn him "A" status. Keeping him past this year will be difficult for the Cards, unless Lohse retire and takes his money off the books.
That's it for this week. See you next time!
Evan McDowell: There are some rumors John Maine will be DFA by the Mets when he finishes his rehab stint. Would the Cards have any interest and do you see any potential with Maine and the Cards pitching staff?
Jeff Gordon: If he ended on the street, the Cards would to at least consider that.
That's it for this week. See you next time!
nickn: Have you seen enough of Jaime Garcia to select him on your all-star squad, even with Carpenter and Wainwright also likely to be selected?
Jeff Gordon: No, he would not make my all-star team. Too many proven pitchers having big years.
Lou Wappel: Gordo, thanks for the chats-I respect your opinion
Are you saying the Rams should draft an RB in the Supplemental draft? When and what is the supplental draft and who is available? Once again thank you!
Jeff Gordon: The BYU kid would be a nice get, for the right price.
See you next week!
