Was this the worst season of “Survivor” ever? I’ve heard it called that, but I disagree. Yes, for a long stretch in the middle, it was hard to root for anybody. But “Survivor: Gabon” brought us more game play than any edition in recent memory, and certainly more blindsides. At the finale, when Jeff Probst was reading the votes, I thought I saw another blindside coming. The winner is … Susie? Yikes. She seems like a lovely person, despite her annoying motor mouth. But except for building a successful house of cards, she did nothing but hang on to make it to the end, and yet she lost by only one vote.
Bob — the teacher from Maine who looks like Mr. Wizard and played like Superman — won five challenges in a row and smoked Matty at fire-building to win the ultimate tie-breaker and get into the finale. He clearly deserved to win. But was anybody else shocked that Sugar didn’t get one vote? I had actually thought that by voting to take Bob to the finale rather than Matty, she might have cost herself $1 million. Clearly, the jury held grudges, but I wonder if after watching the show, they see how well she played and feel at least a little bad.
I’d have liked to see Sugar get the audience favorite prize of $100,000, and I think Bob felt that way too, based on his silent reaction when he won it instead. Or maybe Bob was just too heavily medicated to enjoy the finale much. He seemed almost comatose, and nothing could bring him out of it. Read Jeff Probst’s blog at EW.com for his insights. The new season, from Brazil, starts Feb. 12.

I have watched every season of Survivor and I thought this turned out to be a great season until the final vote last night. I really liked Sugar up until last night. I wish she would have voted Bob off, instead of Matty. It was over once Bob made it to the Final 3. It was obvious that he would get all 4 of his former tribe votes.
Corinne, Corinne…what a witch. I could not believe how cruel she was to Sugar and then didn’t seem to care months later when Jeff asked if she regretted it. She and Randy seem destined to be together. They are both such hateful people. Randy couldn’t find one friend to bring to the finale? Sad.

I turned the reunion off before they announced the $100K winner. I had to hit the DVR as it was recording “Dexter”.
But, did Probst explain what would’ve happened if Sugar got 1 vote and it was a tie between Bob and Susie?
Ah, Brazil! I’d love to be in that cast, but I’m getting too old for that stuff.

Next “installment” (as there are no real seasons) the producers should develop a challenge where the contestants actually jump a shark. Then they should announce that it is survivors last season.
Seriously, for you survivor fans, the show is virtually the SAME year in and year out. The cast of characters are usually the same carbon copies you’ve seen before, the challenges are virtually the same but with different props…I just don’t get it.

You’re right; it is Bill Nye. I can’t actually remember what Mr. Wizard looked like, but no bow tie for sure. And before he cleaned up, didn’t Bob look like Jed Clampett?

Glad Bob won, but Gail, he looks like Bill Nye (the science guy), not Mr. Wizard.

The jury did not vote for Sugar because they were humiliated that she out witted, out played and out lasted them when they felt she was a dumb blond and beneath them intellectually. She is much smarter then she appears and her appearance fooled everyone. She proclaimed her loyalty to both Bob and Matty. I think she should have told Matty her decision to create a tie breaker between Matty and Bob at their final vote. That would have been more fair because she did tell Bob which is why he practiced starting fires and won.

I thought this season started out pretty boring, but it sure picked up. I agree with you that the game play and the blindsides were great this year. I’m also shocked that Susie got three votes and Sugar none, but she didn’t help herself too much at the final jury panel. Her speech was good, but when she was being interrogated, she almost seemed like she wanted Bob to win. It looked like Randy was maybe going to consider her for a minute, and then she totally trashed him. And Matty gave her a chance to say that she felt at least a little sorry she had to make the decision between Bob and him in the final three — you could tell he just wanted a little sympathy from her — but she blew it when he asked something like “Is that all you got for me, Sugar?” and she said “yes.” I think she could’ve picked up a vote or two if she had done just a little brown-nosing. The best man won, but Sugar played the best game. All in all a good season, IMO.

I agree with you Gail, I think Bob played an excellent game and if I were to participate (never) that would be the way I would play (okay, I don’t have his outdoorsy mad skillz). Anyway, aren’t Corrine and Randy sociopaths? They scare me. I think Sugar also played a good game. I’m not sure I understand the jury’s wrath toward her. Wouldn’t they have done the same things? I think sometimes jealousy plays a part in their judgements. Anyway, good season. The right guy won without being as pure as say Yul from Survivor Cook Islands.

I thought it was cruel the way Jeff indicated that Sugar was the favorite and then announced that it was Bob.
