The Associated Press’ weekly summary of newspapers’ watchdog reporting — which AP describes as impact journalism — includes a story by St. Louis Post-Dispatch City Hall reporter Jake Wagman that appeared on the front page Sunday, July 19.
“City’s red-light cameras lacked signs for months”
St. Louis’ top lawyer says that doesn’t negate the tickets; others say the city is on shaky legal ground.”
Here’s AP’s synopsis:
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that red-light cameras have led to fines for thousands of city drivers accused, by snapshot, of breaking the law. But, for months, St. Louis officials did not follow the city’s own laws regarding proper notice for the traffic cameras. The oversight threatens to cast doubt on the validity of scores of citations.
