If you’re thinking about littering in the district of Sen. Kevin Engler, R-Farmington, think again.
He sponsored a bill today, SB 273, that would penalize littering with the death penalty.
“I think that if we kill just a couple of people we catch, the rest will catch on,” he said.
He called the people perpetrating the littering “white trash” and “rednecks.”
Soon after, he clarified he was joking about the bill.
“I’m doing this tongue in cheek, obviously,” he said, and withdrew the bill

I have lived here for a few years and would have to say if this bill passed most of the state would have to be put to death.

I have a by the way as well. I don’t believe that anyone who looked around them would disagree with Mr. Engler. Many cities and states have adopted laws to punish those who seem to have no self pride and throw their trash so others have to be paid to clean it up. Imagine! Having to pay people to pick up trash. There have been people who have let their homes be lost due to the trash of a neighbor and the home could not be sold due to the neighbors trash. You know who the mortgage companies sell the homes to? The neighbors for next to nothing. It is that bad. Thank you Kevin Engler for standing up for those of us who do not have the laws behind us to keep our homes and communities beautiful and safe. I hope we see your proud face soon. Be very proud!

–And by the way…Senator Engler has EVERY RIGHT to complain about this. I have seen that man in the park picking up other people’s trash.
I hope all the critics took the time to listen to the entire audio clip, and not base their opinion on the couple of sentence exerpts listed in this article.

It’s a beautiful area that is being ruined by people who are so inconsiderate. I’ve been behind these “rednecks” on the road when they toss out their McDonalds garbage, throw cigarette butts out the window, and beer bottles at road signs. Is there any better definition of “white trash” than that?

I believe he did not choose his words appropriately, but he did get attention and you have to admit that. I live in Farmington. There does need to be a bill. There also needs to be at least a week out of every month that they spend on stopping and ticketing speeders no matter who they are in order to stop them from thinking they have the right to take our lives into their own hands. And while he is at it, there needs to be a bill to keep people from dumping animals on their neighbors and just picking up a cat or dog and dumping it outside to run the neighborhoods. It is not fair to any of us who love animals and have had to watch them die horrible deaths. Kevin Engler is right on track. It took him saying it the way he did in order to get someones attention. So far no one has cared and Farmington has some very serious issues with lack of laws. I have a whole room on my home damaged and closed off due to neighbors dogs digging to china. Floor actually fell into the ground due to their digging. No one cared and no one would stop it. I am left with severe damage that I can’t afford to fix due to my own medical care taking precidence and our courts even agree that animals should run free. They have a history of proving that. Kevin Engler made a very important statement. Did you hear him? I spent 2 hours this morning outside keeping neighbors puppies and dog from getting run over and starving to death and while I was doing that, I was picking up trash that people throw out while driving through our neighborhood. So I am at work without having done my morning ritual because there were children getting on their buses and they did not need to see their bus run over a little puppy. So did you hear him? He is not a fool, he is as tired as many of us are of people thinking they can trash what we work very hard to build. Anyone who thinks he is a racist or fool knows nothing about him and must be the ones who are guilty. Go Kevin Engler because we can’t live with this trash any longer. Sorry if some of you got your feelings hurt, but look around.

To “Dan”…I’m sorry that you are as ignorant as Kevin Engler with your crude remarks about the people of Farmington. Believe it or not, many of us are college graduates and hold down full time jobs. As for Mr Engler’s remarks..I think they are bigoted and shameful. And to think this man is an elected official of our State, and a businessman in our community. Is this how we want to be known in our State? Joking or not, I think these comments were in very poor taste, and I hope all those who voted for Engler will remember them.

He’s wasting taxpayer money and legislative time to make a “joke”? Not funny on many levels.
I’m sure he’ll think it’s really funny when his constituents vote him out of a job. Maybe then he can actually do something useful and get a job collecting all the litter in his district — surely will be a better use of his “skills” and his district’s taxpayer money.

I’m really curious if all you outraged people calling for the Senators head for “wasting time” while he should be fixing the state have any clue how government works. Where is the outrage over our Governor proposing a budget that sounds like a liberal pipe dream? Do any of you know what the budget looks like? Did you read it? Or did you just come on this thread and decide that it was a much better use of your time to rail against a man that most of you probably have never met and have no right to judge? It’s not people like Sen Engler that are ruining this country it’s the people in these threads that prefer righteous outrage to doing anything constructive with their time.

Racism runs both ways. I do not think that any people should be referred to as trash based on color. I find this quite offensive on two levels 1. It is clearly racist, remmeber the rule another race is not supposed to “jokingly” make derogative, sterotypical statements about other races and 2. Driving along the littered roadsides in his area is not pleasant. What do the tourists to our area think about our lack of respect for their view of our beautiful countryside? Something should be done, but not quite that extreme. Good point, Senator Engler.

After decades of observing how Whitey behaves after being offended I expect to see hordes of “them” rampaging, rioting and looting over this latest outrage.
Surely entire neighborhoods will be in flames with many incidents of innocent bystanders attacked and harmed, some even killed.

Litter is despicable. In the area Kevin serves, the littering is done by ignorant, despicable folks that are overwhelmingly white. In the metro areas, littering is done by ignorant, despicable people more likely to be black.
