Early exit polls nationally show strong pro-Obama trend

Political Fix got a peek, from a polling source, of the first wave of exit polls around the country.

Of the 16 states with results, including Missouri, 14 showed an edge for Democrat Barack Obama. The edge ranged widely, from a few points to double digits.

HOWEVER, a big cautionary note about exit polls: Recent history has shown that exit polls often skew Democratic, because Democratic voters tend to be more willing to discuss their choices with the polling workers than Republican do.

And in 2004, those exit polls were off, in part, because more Democratic voters cast ballots early in the day. (Traditionally, Republicans vote earlier in the day, and Democrats tend to vote later.)

So Political Fix junkies should keep that in mind as they watch the exit poll results on TV tonight, especially the first wave.
