Now open downtown: The St. Louis Jazz Cafe, in the space that was formerly Red Moon at 1500 St. Charles St., a half-block north of Washington Avenue at 15th St. The menu has lots of southern, Cajun and Creole touches, with live jazz most weekends.
Also newly opened downtown (OK, Downtown West, as is the Jazz Cafe): Smoking Joe’s Bar-Be-Que, at 1901 Washington Avenue in the newly rehabbed Tudor Building. Food is served from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and the bar stays open until midnight. No website active yet; call 314-436-3876
for more info.
And thanks to the ever-informative urbanstl.com for sighting a sign on the door of the former Zaytoon at 711 Olive, apparently soon to open as Baan Thai.

Joe Bonwich has been the restaurant critic for the Post-Dispatch since 2002 and has covered the local food scene for various publications for more than 25 years. He does his best to maintain his anonymity so that he isn't recognized in restaurants (which is why his picture looks like it does).
Yay! I have missed Thai Express so much, it will be nice to have some Thai food available for lunch. Not nice for my budget necessarily, but my taste buds will thank me.
