After the Blues’ 4-3 win over Detroit Friday night, Blues center Jay McClement was asked to comment on the significance of rallying from a two-goal deficit and beating the Red Wings.

Here’s what McClement said:

“We haven’t had a lot of success against them the last few years. We started to at the end of last year . . . a couple of big games at a big time of the year for us. I think guys are starting to learn how to play against them.”

Today, this part of McClement’s comment (“guys are starting to learn how to play against them”) was relayed to Detroit coach Mike Babcock by a Detroit reporter.

Babcock was then asked if he sensed that teams in the Central Division, like the Blues, are beginning to feel that they are catching up to the Wings.

Babcock: “I hear it every year.”

Reporter: “And yet, you keep winning . . .”

Babcock: “Let’s just watch. They (the Blues) won yesterday.”

Reporter: “Well, the Blues also beat you guys late last season . . .”

Babcock: “I don’t know, did they? When was the last time we played them?”

Reporter: “The night that (David) Backes had four goals.”

Babcock: “He had four that night? Was it the game we got beat 5-0?”

Reporter: “No it was 5-4.”

Babcock: “Oh, OK. Hey, that’s last year. We’re in this year. They beat us last night fair and square, and that’s the bottom line. All the power to them.”

Like who cares? It’s so early that no one has any idea who will be
in the playoffs at the end of the season. Quit bringing up stuff that
has nothing to do with the last game.

McClement was outstanding on Friday, he can say whatever he wants. Maybe the Wings should be more concerned with his play than his mouth.

There’s a story there? What was McClement supposed to say….”We were lucky?” Then how would WE feel about that? All great teams will decline at some point. Detroit has been rock solid for years and they have much to be proud of but so do we.

Whoever that reporter was…Get over it!

A reporter making something out of nothing and then Babcock taking the bait.
