Don’t count Sanford out yet
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
I think that it is too early to eliminate Governor Mark Sanford from consideration as a possible Republican nominee for the presidency in 2012. I think that he can make a strong case for his qualifications. After all, although Governor Sarah Palin may be able to see Russia from her house, neither she nor any of the other often-mentioned potential candidates has Governor Sanford’s experience in foreign affairs!

Amazed: absolutely.
Somehow I’m reminded of a line reputed to be used by Boss Daley years ago: “the only honest politician is one who stays bought”
For most folks, as long as they don’t have to stand in a bread line and can get gas for the car, what their politicos do means darned little to them. On the subject at hand, I’m waiting for the day a politician (either party, I don’t care) gets caught with his pants down around his ankles, and says, “Hey, yep, I did it. And this problem is between me, my wife, my kids, and whichever professional we choose to seek counsel with. For the rest of you, it’s none of your business.”
And then shut up and walk away.
I doubt it will ever happen.

I think I’ve got a handle on this after reading these posts….
Just don’t speak against immoral acts and when you are caught engaging in immoral acts, no one will be upset.
Zat about sum it up?
I find it kind of funny how most democrat politicians make their careers by “fighting for the little guy” yet not a damn one of them knows what it’s like to be the “little guy.” I love how Edwards spoke often of the cruelty of the “rich ‘Merica” against the “poor ‘Merica” while he was thoroughly entrenched in the former. Or how Gore beats the environmental drum all the while consuming more energy than entire small towns.
Can’t you folks see that there is plenty of hypocrisy to go around?

Something dems NEVER do, of course. Typical, though, when your argument is stuffed, to go waaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh.
Liberals, so easy to read, so hard to help understand. Maybe you will grow up one day, but I won’t hold my breath.

In response, then: In GENERAL, conservatives have a moral compass for everyone else, but not for themselves. Particularly conservative politicians who are kowtowing to the religious fundamentalists to pander for votes. These tend to say all the right things about family values, but rarely seem to live them.

“”Who are the “THEY” you are referring to in the first post, if it was not “Liberals”? And if your statement is NOT a characterization, then wtf is it?”-hs-
-So which is it? You start out arguing one point and then switch in mid-stream.
-Key word being GENERALLY, as explained, in my experience liberals don’t have a basis in religious beliefs.
-The “moral compass” reference was to poster who made that premise. Was asking her a question if that is what they really believed.
“right wing ‘family values’ politicians and media stars screeching condemnation when they are no better themselves.”–moon-bat–
-Sorry but I don’t see it. Must be the guilt thing giving you bad dreams of conservative pitchfork brigades in your sleep. That is what liberals do.

Yes, thank you Mr Thomas.I wish I had said it as well as you. That sentence explains the revulsion we feel at these right wing “family values” politicians and media stars screeching condemnation when they are no better themselves.

TomDoubt….You’re not a Republican and I’m not a Liberal.
Glad we got that out of the way.
You’re a Rush Limbaugh conservative.
Rush claims we should admire Sanford for not cheating on his mistress.
I like those conservative family values.
At least Liberals don’t pretend to be high and moral.
You’re right about one thing. Not all conservatives are Republicans…but they’re just as phony and pretentious.
Roy Blunt was complaining about high unemployment today.
to having it under control…and the spending thing too!
Thanks for your concern Roy…You guys were that close
Can’t understand why Republican approval ratings are in the low 20’s.

Much as it hurts me, I agree with much of hs’s post. I should have made it clear in my earlier posts that Sanford disgusts me. I am not a republican, but I am a conservative, and Sanford disgraced us all. Why this nut job, who left his state in limbo, and now rambles on with more teenage nonsense, has not resigned is also a disgrace. Please, go away. Still, I think some of the earlier comments from the left, many of who ignore their own politicians affairs, gloating at this because the right spouts values, reveals something about them. What do they stand for? If you live in the gutter, can you somehow claim superiority over someone who stumbles in there with you?

Actually, I saw the foreign policy comment as a strict comparison, quite satirical, to Sarah Palin’s. Sanford/Palin in 2012. THAT would be an awesomely funny ticket. Or, perhaps, it could be Palin/Sanford? Something about her wanting to be on top could make the late night show hosts salivate.
Oh, how many believers who have made political hay on the hard right over the last 30 years have cowered in repentance when their feet of clay were revealed? I can’t think of any.
In all seriousness, I hope the fixation on sexual escapades ends sometime soon. I really don’t care either way who is doing what with whom. I think the hard right has brought most of this on by making it such a political issue over the last 30 years or so, and now that they are getting trapped by their words, they suddenly don’t like it.
My “bozo of the year award” however, goes to a dead heat between Eliot Spitzer and John Edwards. Mark Sanford is small potatoes.

The only thing I could add is what has already been said. Agree he got a “comeuppance”, as your folks would say, however;
“His actual comments on what Clinton did weren’t directed at the diddling of the intern as much as the overall abuse of the office. There is quite a bit of difference, don’t you think?”

That is not what I said. Extra ridicule is due not because one is a christian rather it is due one who loudly, piously, publicly and self righteously condemns his fellow man for sins he too is guilty of at that very same time. That is not moral relativism that is the man getting his comeuppance.

Nobody said, to use slick willie as the example, that he gets a free pass for his Bimbo Eruptions (love that phrase). However, there is a certain sense of poetic justice when someone who has been railing against some behavior or other gets caught doing the very thing he (most often it IS he) was making noise against.
Personally, I think Eliot Spitzer was just as big an idiot as Sanford.
Dr. Debunk: I take exception to your characterization of liberals as having no moral compass. Add to it the characterization of having no religious belief themselves suggests to ME that you don’t know very many. Now, the fact that many of the most vocal liberals out on the fringe espouse some of those traits doesn’t make the overall generalization any more true than if I was to say that All Conservatives are bible-thumping Pat Robertson wanna be’s. (Which I know is NOT true).

I’m scratching my head on this one…..
I personally never heard of Sanford until about 2 weeks ago when he went missing. Sure I heard his name in passing but didn’t know enough about him to hear him preaching family values and morals. Did you folks witness this or is it just that he’s a Republican so he must have ran on the moral/value ticket?
I guess I understand the excitement it causes when the disliked party gets caught doing wrong. I don’t understand how some justify the dems that get caught as ok because they don’t “preach” the moral code.

In your paradigm, liberals can’t be ridiculed for anti-social behavior, since they have no moral compass to begin with. Am I correct?

Gov. Sanford’s extramarital sexual affairs are the concern of himself and his wife only. This liberal will continue to treat the subject in that manner. But Sanford’s hypocrisy is fair game. Sanford placed himself in the crosshairs by taking positions of moral superiority. In the parliance of my down home kin, Sanford is just “gettin his comeuppance”. Whether it’s Sanford or some televangelist on sex or Rush Limbaugh on drug abuse, those who preach and condemn loudly and publicly from their holier than thou pulpits deserve particularly loud and public condemnation when they themselves are shown to be participants in the same vice.

Great Letter William!
Sanford/Palin could make a fantastic ticket for the 22% in 2012.
Palin could drag her children back into the election and Mark could flaunt his hottie from Argentina. What a party!
In all fairness though, I must say thank God that John Edwards did not win the democratic nomination and then have his affair come out publically. At least Edwards did not run on family values or anti gay marriage as Sanford did. Sanford wins for biggiest hypocrite.
But we all know it is Obama’s fault that Sandford stepped out on his wife.
Just ask the Rightous Rush and his ditto-heads.
Dr.De-Bunkster,
Leave Juanita alone you arrogant sexist piece of crap!
You bring out the worst in good people with your condescending remarks in which you talk down to any woman on this site. Do you treat all woman this way or only those that do not see life through your pea-brained mentality?
Is there a Mrs. De-Bunk, Mrs. Iconclastic Sage, or a Mrs. Gamecock9999?
If so, how can she stand you?

Who is the hypocrite?
Gov. Sanford, who paraded his family values publicly, attacked Clinton and demanded his resignation, flies off to Argentina to make nice with some hottie he met down there. Doesn’t that make HIM a hypocrite? Doesn’t that make all of you who defend him, or at best damn him with faint praise (he’s not as bad as (blank)….hypocrites?

As I was checking, it was suggested that because Sanfords’ affair was with a woman of legal age, this automatically qualifies him as a Democrat, thus, Fox “News”s’ use of the “D” next to his name.

To the sage, dr debunk, and others…See, many folks actually expect that their elected officials will actually LIVE the kind of life they say they support. So, in the case of Clinton or Ted K., the voters know or knew what they were getting, and voted anyway.
In the case of someone like Sanford, who goes out of his way to condemn the sexcapades of others, who is a staunch supporter of “family values” and “traditional families”, shouldn’t one expect him to keep it zipped except with the one he’s married to?

Regardless of what one thinks about Sanford, you’ve got to appreciate his wife for NOT standing by her man.
Last night I saw that the Fox “News” channel, during it’s coverage of the scandal had a “D” next to Sanfords’ name. They did the same thing with Marc Foley (the lowest of the low ). The Fox watchers, who clain to be the most astute politically, surely realize this. Is this an inside joke? If so, I’ll continue to get my information from sources that do not run themselves like college fraternities.
If I ever want to host a kegger, I’ll consider Fox “News”!

stltransplant, because EVERYTHING makes them bash him. After all, Rush stated that Sanford’s affair was Obama’s fault. I thought that if a married man had an affair, it’s his own free choice to unzip, so HE is fundamentally at fault.
How many family values republicans have been brought down in sex scandals now? What about the proverb about living in glass houses?

Ha! Glad to see someone with a sense of humor on here. I don’t care if he had an affair…it’s just the hypocrisy of his voting record, and political stance (anti gay marriage b/c it isn’t moral) that is sickening. His wife is also a proponent of gay marriage. As if hers is superior? Bottom line…no one is to say, and no one should be judging what happens b/t 2 consenting adults. I would think the Republicans would agree with this.

The author of this letter, or Juanita, or any other Obama supporter has given up any credibility in even commenting on qualifications for the presidency if they voted for and/or support this naive, unaccomplished mouthpiece who is now running the free world. Of course he is controlled by others with truly sinister intentions, and they test the Obmammaniacs every day. Today, I can just see Soros telling this buffoon to go out and say “the stimulus has worked.” Let’s see what they do. Of course, sanity would dictate that is a joke, but support will roll from the msm and the fools on sites like this. We are in trouble. If William Klopfenstein is an Obama backer and is actually ridiculing others’ qualifications for the presidency, he belongs with the leftist moon-bats on this site.

If we dig into Sanford’s background deep enough, perhaps we can find out he attended a racist/anti-American church for decades, dragging his family to hear their filth, and contributing tens of thousands of dollars to that institution. He may even have been sponsored and mentored by an admitted and unapologetic terrorist who attacked his own country. He may be financed by a man of fine character who made his bones by turning in fellow jews to the nazis in the polish ghetto. He may have received a sweetheart deal on a home from a convicted felon. Wow, can you imagine gacking a low life like that for president. Almost comical.
