Borgia High grad Matt Pickens is among three goalies called into the U.S. national team camp [1]in advance of the team’s Nov. 19 match with Guatemala in Commerce City, Colorado. Pickens, who was playing in England with QPR, is out of contract right now. With the U.S. having already advanced to the next round, coach Bob Bradley is bring almost exclusivevly young players in this camp. Right now, he’s called in players from teams that have been eliminated from MLS Cup and a few European-based players. He will likely bring in a few new players after this weekend’s MLS playoff semifinals. It seems unlikely any of the team’s top-line European players would come back for the match.
I doubt Pickens will get a chance to play in the match. Though he’s the only one of three goalies called in who has spent time with the national team before, he’s also the one who has gone longest without playing a competitive match. Tim Howard, Brad Guzan and Marcus Hahnemann remain the top U.S. keepers, but at least Pickens remains on the radar screen for down the road.
