JUPITER, Fla. — Five years following his abrupt dismissal as Cardinals hitting coach, the club is expected to announce Mitchell Page as hitting coach for its Midwest League (Class A) Quad Cities affiliate later this week.
Page served as major-league hitting coach from 2001-04. He would succeed Joe Kruzel with the River Bandits. Page’s hire was rumored as long ago as December’s winter meetings but has remained on hold while contract details are finalized. The Cardinals also typically allow their affiliates to formally announce their coaching staffs.
The Cardinals reached the postseason in three of Page’s four seasons in St. Louis. The exception occurred in 2003, when the Cardinals’ offense enjoyed its most prolific run of Page’s tenure. However, the organization declined to extend Page’s contract days after it suffered a four-game sweep to the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 World Series. Hal McRae, whom the club dismissed last October in conjunction with its hiring of Mark McGwire, succeeded Page.
Though the Cardinals refused to disclose their reason for dismissing Page, he disclosed he was fired because of his ongoing struggle with alcoholism. He subsequently sought treatment and was hired by the Washington Nationals.

Wonderful to see Page back ! I thought he did a very fine job while he was here. We need good instruction in the minors –I bet MP can do the job.

On a lighter note (DWI’s aside)…if you haven’t been to Davenport to see a Quad City game its well worth the trip. Cool ballpark right on the Mississippi with good restaurants in the same general area.

I guess I owe evreyone an opology. Cant help how I feel about this entire situation. All he had to do was be thoroughly honest in his opology and all would have been forgiven. I will resign from posting. I know “good ridence” Just for the record. Steroids make a person wildly strong make no mistake.

Rocky: I suggest you go read the Blog Comments: Rules of the Road, since you keep violating the first three posting rules. Maybe you could try to act like an adult and stop with the generalizations and name calling. That is, if you want to actually have a dialogue, rather than just acting like a 13-year old punk.

I live in Cedar Rapids and attend many of the CR Kernels games when the Quad Cities River Bandits come to town. I love to see the Cards drafted picks play. It is a low class “A” league. I hope to enjoy the Bandits bats rip the CR Kernels (Angels) pitching.

Good hire, as long as he doesn’t have any one-on-one sessions with David Freese!

Seems to me Mitchell Page’s release 4 years ago was due to alcohol abuse problems..I would assume Mitchell is sober now,Good for you Mitchell!!!!

I like this hire. I had the occasion to meet Mitchell on several occasions (not-so ironically at a downtown bar) and he was a nice guy but you knew there was something a bit “off” about him. But the man can coach!

Welcome back, Mr. Page. Kind of ironic, him being dismissed with all the other substance issues that surround this club and current regime.
