CHICAGO — Sunday night’s rainout between the Cardinals and Chicago Cubs has been rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader on Sunday July 12, the final day before the All-Star break. Sunday’s postponed game will be played at 12:05 p.m. with the regularly scheduled ESPN game to follow at 7:05 p.m. A Cubs press release encouraged fans to retain tickets from Sunday’s game until further information is available regarding ticket policies for the make-up. Information will be posted at cubs.com as soon as it is available, according to the release.
The Cardinals will hold voluntary workouts throughout Monday at Busch Stadium before their schedule resumes Tuesday against the New York Mets.
Sunday’s rainout ends a streak of 13 consecutive game dates to open the season. Pitching coach Dave Duncan plans to toggle his rotation with the schedule break. Todd Wellemeyer will start Tuesday followed by Joel Pineiro Wednesday, Kyle Lohse Thursday and Adam Wainwright in Friday’s series opener against the Cubs. Duncan moved Wainwright behind Lohse because of Wainwright’s better career success against the Cubs.
Lohse started Saturday’s 11-inning 7-5 loss, leaving a 4-4 game after five innings.
Wainwright lasted six innings as the pitcher or record in Thursday’s 7-4 win.
Sunday’s rescheduled game means the Cardinals will play 10 games in 10 days during a three-city road trip to Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Chicago immediately before Busch Stadium hosts the All-Star Game. The Cardinals visit Wrigley Field only twice this season, failing to return after the break.
