La Russa lauds Marlins’ skipper

The Florida Marlins enter tonight’s game with the Cardinals here with the sixth-best record in the National League among the 16 teams, yet they are 13th in team defense, 10th in team earned run average, fifth in most walks allowed and third in most strikeouts by their hitters.

This surely speaks some volumes for the job done by third-year Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, for whom Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has considerable admiration.

“I think he’s outstanding,” said La Russa. “He’s classic because he’s done a lot of things in baseball _ managed, coached with Bobby (Atlanta manager Bobby Cox). His education is top-notch and he’s got a terrific feel for the game.

“And the other part you need to have is to have guys follow you. He’s a leader. Take a look at their club this year. It hangs in there.

“He’s one of my idols.”

Heck, even I’m smart enough to think of that.

Eric, that doesn’t make sense because you’d always have 2 teams with a day off – 1 in each league. That’s why there are 16 and 14 teams in each league – don’t you think people a lot smarter than you thought of that?
