Firefighters think a space heater may have started a fire that damaged a home near St. Peters early this afternoon.

Assistant Chief Brian Ochs of Central County Fire and Rescue said the fire started sometime after 12:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of Walnut Tree Street. The home’s occupants called firefighters, he said.

Ochs said a space heater that was being used in the back of the house is the likely cause of the fire. He estimated damage at $40,000 to $50,000. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Firefighters from St. Charles and Cottleville assisted Central County, Ochs said.

People use space heaters without using common sense.
