Arson is the cause of an early morning fire in an apartment building in St. Charles County.

A small fire was reported just after 3 a.m. in a laundry room at the Pralle Meadows Apartments on Sugar Maple Lane (off Pralle Lane near Highway 94). No one was injured.

Lt. Dave Tiefenbrunn of the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department said the fire began when someone took a decorative broom hanging on an apartment door and lit it on fire in a laundry room.

A former resident who had been evicted from the building is the main suspect, investigators say.

The fire caused about $2,000 in damage, said Steve Brown, assistant chief of Central County Fire and Rescue.

It’s all and well that nobody was hurt here, but this is plain ignorance. I can’t believe someone would endager others, especially the firefighters, just to try and prove a point.
