Sen. Bond jokes his book not ‘for rednecks’
Jane Henderson
Post-Dispatch Book Editor

[1]Sen. Kit Bond said at a book signing that his new book isn’t for “rednecks,” a video at Politico.com [2]shows.

The site headline says “Bond: My Book’s Not ‘for Rednecks.’” But if you watch the video it’s pretty clear that the senator is joking.

Politico also notes:

Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) says he’s over politics – at least after next year.

Appearing at a book signing Tuesday night for his new book, “The Next Front,” Bond told an audience member who suggested that he run for president that he wasn’t interested.

“No thank you, I’m outta that,” Bond said. “My mother used to say ‘It’s time you get out there and get a real job to support your family.’ I’ll try to do that next year.” …

Asked if his colleagues in the Senate have read the book, Bond said, “I’ve got some who are working on it. A publisher in my hometown paper said that he read about four chapters and said that this will never be a bestseller. And I said, ‘This wasn’t meant for rednecks like you.’”

Bond doesn’t identify the publisher. He grew up in Mexico, Mo.

The senator will be in St. Louis at 7 p.m. Friday to sign “The Next Front: Southeast Asia and the road to Global Peace With Islam.” The event is at Barnes and Noble, 721 Gravois Road, Fenton (636-326-4619). A clerk said Wednesday that the store was not expecting a big crowd and would not be handing out armbands. But who knows whether that could change by Friday.
