Thompson is one of 10 A-10 postseason transfers

With Brett Thompson transferring from SLU, it got me wondering as to how common it is for players to transfer from A-10 schools.

It turns out that half of the teams in the league have had players transfer out after the season. Three schools, Fordham, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure, had two players transfer. So that makes 10 postseason transfers. I should say that I relied on schools to report a player leaving. Usually schools put out a short press release when someone goes, and that’s what I looked for. If a school hasn’t acknowledged a departure, I remain in the dark, though I doubt that happens. (Another unknown: Did they jump or were they pushed?)

It almost goes without saying that the lower you were in the standings, the more likely you were to have a player transfer. Of the six bottom teams in the standings, UMass was the only team not to lose a player. Duquesne was the team with the best finish, fifth, to lose a player.

Also, though it’s totally unrelated, except that he might not comeback, Xavier’s Derrick Brown has until June 25 to dedice if he’s going to go into the NBA draft or return to Xavier. He’s announced he’s going to the draft but hasn’t hired an agent and can change his mind.

Here’s who you won’t be seeing in the A-10 next season. For humor, I’ve included the boilerplate quotes that accompany these press releases:

Charlotte: Gaby Ngoundjo, a 6-7 sophomore.

“We wish Gaby the very best in his quest to find the right situation for him,” said 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz. “He is an outstanding young man.”

“I really enjoy playing basketball and have enjoyed my time with the 49ers, but I think I will be better off at another school where I could see more playing time,” said Ngoundjo. “I gained a lot of experience and I think I learned alot here. My teammates were awesome. It was a pleasure.”

Duquesne: Shawntez Patterson, 6-7 freshman, Aleksandar Milovic, 6-7, freshman

“I met with Shawntez and Aleks individually and in both cases it was agreed that it would be best to pursue other opportunities,” said Ron Everhart. “We will do whatever we can to help them find a place where they can continue their education and their basketball careers.”

Fordham: Mike Moore, sohpomore guard, Trey Blue, freshman guard

“Mike Moore has asked for and received a release from his scholarship,” said Dereck Whittenburg. “We appreciate his contribution to the Fordham program and wish him the best in the future.”

”Trey had some personal issues during the season that took a lot out of him,” said Whittenburg. “At the end of the season we decided that it’s in his best interest to transfer. We wish him the best of luck in the future.”

George Washington: Matt Albritton, 6-4 guard

”Matt wanted to attend a school that was closer to home,” Hobbs said. “We wish him the very best in his future.”

La Salle: Darryl Partin, sophomore guard:

“Darryl has done well on and off the court at La Salle,” noted Coach Giannini. “I am confident he will do well in the future.”

St. Bonaventure: Ray Blackburn, junior, Maurice Thomas, junior

“It’s unfortunate that Ray and Maurice aren’t going to be able to complete their careers at St. Bonaventure, but we all felt this was the best decision for everyone,” said Schmidt. “Ray is going to look to go to school in Buffalo so he can be closer to his family and we wish Maurice the best of luck with his future in basketball, school and in life.”

P.S.: Maurice Thomas transferred to St. Bonaventure from Texas El Paso. So he’s a mobile kind of guy.

SLU: Brett Thompson, 6-10, center

“I would like to thank Coach Majerus, the coaching staff and my teammates for the opportunity to be a part of the Billiken basketball program,” Thompson said.

“Brett Thompson is a quality young man,” Majerus said. “We wish him every success in the future and thank him for the contributions he made to the program last season.”

Darryl Partin had a pretty nice game against us, IIRC.

Thompson was a Moser recruit. When Majerus finally condescended to do his first post game interview with Bob Ramsey after about game 5 or 6 he ripped Thompson to the point it was laughable and a disgrace. Why was he recruited in the first place? I predicted that Cassity would also leave the program. Hopefully the Aussies can bring something to this program. Can Majerus coach anyone besides 23-25 year old Mormons which he had at Utah. The man is a blowhard!
